  1. One of the Best if Not the Best Article on the sorry status of present day Rugby in SriLanka, It was fascinating to see how vividly Writer has been able to mix up Rugby-Nittawela grounds-Local community-History together !!! Take a Bow Mr. CR !!!

I am hailing from Aruppola, a small village in between Historical Wagolla ford(200 m away from my home) & Nittawela (1 km away from my home). Whilst reading, it was nothing but sheer pleasure for been able to go back to those good old days as school going kids, we everyday used to spend 2-3 hours at Nittawela grounds, another 1-2 hours swimming & playing at Mahaweli river just before the Wagolla ford, Cycling in and around whole Kandy town & at times going as far as to Teldeniya, Galagedara & Wattegama !!! It wouldn’t be completed if I do not state how refreshing coconut toddy of the other side of the Mahaveli river in Sirimalwatte & it took no time for us to cross the river by traditional boats used by fishing folks in & around our village !!!

Getting back to Rugby, I was in SL at the begging of Aug’12 & was at Welisara on the 5th Aug’12 to witness Kandy SC vs Navy SC 1st leg Rugby match & hardly there were any crowd from Kandy to support the visiting team. It was rather there were many Kandy supporters & hardly anyone wanted to get noticed being a Kandy supporter. Match was again a nail bitter & must say Kandy teams 15 were playing against 18 (15 Navy + Referee + 2 Line Judges). I thought if this was what chairman of SL Rugby Referees society (Jamaldeen) has to offer to the world what one could expect from junior referees ???

This article would have been a complete one if the writer could shade some light to another new trend in SL Club Rugby field, That is increasingly high amount of arguments initiated by some VVIP sons with on field referees… It was a common sight through out almost all the matches involved with Navy SC this year !!!

Also it is needles to say the damage caused by favouritism in SL Rugby team selection, where many senior players in the past had made themselves unavailable for national duty as they do not wish to play under a very junior rugby playing VVIP son who had been parachuted from nowhere,In fact if there are no favoritism, he will hardly even make it to sit on the bench, let alone playing for 15 !!!

  3. Nice piece! We need more analysis on the phenomenon of SPORTS BUSINESS and Rajapakse’s capital gains.. Sports and sports advertising business -which is big business for profit making by the ruling family which has its fat fingers in lots of economic pies, particularly, the military-sports-tourism complex which is a clear money spinning strategy.
In other words the ruling family brothers and sons have divided up the national economy in sectors for power and profit. Gota the goon controls defense and UDA and related funds and kick backs, Basil Tourism businesses and Namal the brat is the sports czar, from rugby to Carleton sports, to drag racing and plans for Formula One in the Indian Ocean! And they all invest their ill gotten gains through shell companies in that unparallelled stock market.. after transferring public wealth into private hands..

  4. Of the many dubious records the Rajapakses, their next generation that is to say, have created in recent times is to politicise the once Gentlemens game of Rugby. It was a pleasure earlier to go for Rugby matches. But now one’s life is at risk with Govt goons under instructions to create violence and physically attack innocent fans.

The Rajapakses should get some of their advisors to read to them how Saddam Hussein’s sons ran riot when Dadda was in absolute power. Eventually, the sons fell to bullets and dad was fished out of a rat hole. Most Iraqis did celebrate – not only Shiites. Many majority Sunnis too.

President Rajapakse is well advised to put his spoilt brats in place
before they endanger his own political future.

    • The future for the Rajapaksas’ for the time being seems rosy while the future of millions of Sri Lankans seems bleak, but one fine day the tide will turn and it will be the other way around. Nothing is permanent the Buddha said. A good example of that is the late Muammar Gaddafi of Libya, the good friend of President Percy Jilmart who got what he deserved after 42 years.

    • Kapila Kahapola, I fail to understand your Logic. You condemn the behaviour of the present Rugby scene after the Rajapaksa brats have started to play for the Navy team and agree with Charitha Ratwatte, on the essence of this article of the first post sent by you. Then when PresiDunce Bean castigates the Rajapaksas for the same issue, you berate PresiDunce Bean? I doubt Dubai to be the 12th best livable City, with such scumbags aroud?

      • Daer Gamini,

Seems like it is your fake name bothers Kapila Kahapola ? Guy has a point, If you know what you write here is according to the way you see it why not let the readers know who you are, rather than hiding behind a fake name?

Cowards bend at the knees calling others scumbags………

  7. The Appuhamy regiment appears to be the First SUICIDE SQUAD from Lanka.
The LTTE cannot claim to be the forerunners then.

  8. You are spot on Ramani. When Appuhamy’s regiment did it, it was heroic but the LTTE were “damned murderouscowards”. Why this double standard of judgement ?
