    • Lanka is a HUB for thugs and sex tourists.. forget about knowledge hubs!
How much tax rupees has been spent on so-called tourism promotion tamashas and shows like the useless Commonwelath talk shop now on in Colombo while delegates are escorted in huge security convoys with sirens that disturb the general public? All these shows have to be counted when assessing the real contribution of “tourism’ to the economy. Tourism madness of Basil has been used as an excuse cover to promote massive govt spending on tamashas and night clubs to entertain the likes of those in the above pictures and legitimize land grabbing.
The real benefits of tourism can be measured against numbers of tourists, divided by all the funds spent on shows like the useless Commonwealth Parliament meeting for which massive funds are spent by a massively debt ridden county on a talk shop of a British Colonial remnant (Commonwealth) used to boost the egos of post-colonial dictators like Rajapaskse today in a country where the parliamentary system has been completely undermined by a nepotistic dictator!

      • Charith, I was only cynical in naming these as the Elite. Your given definition of Elite as the richest, most powerful, best Educated or best trained in a society also would not connote the Elite.

One need not be the most richest, as there are crooks and drug barrons who are the richest in societies today. Therefore a person of some means. Most powerful. Certainly not as the most powerful in society are the croocked politicians as MR. Instead most respectful, one who has earned the respect of society. Best educated. Again not as educational qualifications like for synthetic lawyers do not qualify. The educated who are wise and who are cultured with a family history with reputation, having fear and shame are the Elite in a society. Therefore none of these buggers qualify or come anywhere near the Elite of a country.

  7. CBK was at the head of affairs for many years. Her daughter and son, children from the Manor as they unquestionably were (if you will grant some leeway to Vijay’s good but humbler background) could have easily frequented the 5-star night clubs and drug-joints when mamma was the Big Boss. We recall what CBK told a friend when asked visiting Temple Trees where her chldren were – in the background of the rowdy behaviour of the sons of SB and Mahinda Wijesekera found drunk and disorderly at dawn in 5 star night-clubs. The answer was “they are upstarirs – studying” We learn both children ended up with degrees in good Colleges in England. That, if you will forgive me, is breeding and the result of 7 generations of calibre.

There is an old Tamil saying about what the monkey does to the bouquet of flowers in its hand. I suppose the long and short of it is one cannot buy honour and integrity either with drugs, crime or stolen money.

    • This reminds me of the story in Sunday Leader some years back,
written by Lasantha, a respected journalist.

When Lasantha visited CBK & Vijay, he has told CBK that there were
romours that CBK did not have a Degree as claimed by her.
He sugested to her “why not dispell these romours by producing her Certificate to him so tahe he could pulish in his paper”.
CBK then went upstairs “to search for the certificates”.
However when she did not come down for a quite a long time, Vijay
was calling her to come down saying “why are you searching for something that does not exist”

This story tells about the honesty of Vijay Kumaratunge.

  18. These thugs and their offspring thugs cannot be punished for their crimes because of their connections to powerful politicians. The only way to eliminate them is for a VIGILANTE movement to be created to deal with such thugs. The VIGILANTE movement can comprise of ex Military personnel who are trained to catch terrorists – which will make their task easier to catch these petty thugs who must be hiding under their parents’ sarongs by now. They must be hounded and exterminated from our society. They are a cancer in our society – and the peace loving Sri Lankan public cannot take their nonsense anymore. No one can go out to any of the nice hotspots in Colombo any more without fearing these thugs. They would pounce on anyone they think they can prey on. I have seen this Malaka fellow and his thugs trying to mess around with other peoples’ girlfriends or dates – or even wives – and very often ending in ugly confrontations. Its not only this Malaka fellow who imposes his thuggery at these night spots, there are a few other notorious thugs too who are surrounded by their so-called bodyguards, and deal in drugs peddling. Their main business is distribution of narcotics amongst patrons at these night spots. There have been several “turf wars” between these rival thugs for control of territory for their drug business. IMMEDIATE ACTION MUST BE TAKEN TO ERADICATE THESE MORONS. SINCE THE LEGAL SYSTEM IS IMPOTENT TO ACT AGAINST THESE THUGS BECAUSE OF THEIR POLITICAL CONNECTIONS, A STRONG AND RUTHLESS VIGILANTE MOVEMENT IS THE NEED OF THE HOUR. The Sri Lankan public will support any Vigilante movement that will take care of these thugs.

or I believe concerns of majority folks not hearted. They just dontfocus on the alarming problems and giving their mandate to those who can wholeheartely work on the improvement.

Becoming more clear that the situation before nation today in the post war era is much more difficult to handle so long the rulers would not make new amendments to strengthen and make effective the prevailing laws as necessary. This kind of amendments are common to any country where they want to strenghthen their laws. I have seen these changes to the prevailing laws oft in Europe. New laws following thorough study should get passed with signifcant mandates in the parliament. Then authorities can implement them easily. This process is not seen happening in SL. No justice minister or any lawful authorities or bodies seem to pay due attention on this adequately even if crime investigations are clearly influenced by illegal interference of politicians today.

Really not clear, why cant the lawyers ( though many of lanken lawyers are reported to be not honest – that is what I heard recently) take a lead of the demonstrations – advocating the need of the hour -ENFORCEMENT OF LAW AND ORDER – they seem to stay so passive as injected mice for the lab experiments.

That shows that those who must act are disinterested. So who should act now? The people? Who would give leadership to them? Are they scared to come forward? Even if they did come forward, if the above bodies do not take action, the problem is not solved. How about Vigilante groups? May be that is the only option, as taking a life is so easy and cheap. But will it be a short lived solution? As another Mervyn or Malaka will arrive in the scene. Who knows, it may serve as a deterrant if a vigilante group disciplines the miscreants.

How can a minister, who s been elected by folks – behaves in this way ?

where have we the nation been ?

He proudly reveals that he failed to help those women and illegitimate sons So, all those who heard have the right to line up and claim for child benefits according to lanken laws. If this could be the case for women in EUrope, they will not react immidiately and ask for Wandi (compensation) so that Mervin can bankrupt easily.

  34. Religious leaders of all regligions those who want to protect the lanken society should come forward at this juncture to save the nation by ordering this uncivilised minister to wear muzzle – if he speaks to media this much of shameless manner, the youth of the country will have no future… :(

    • Are there any options left for anti-rulers but country loving citizens than leaving comments at least in this way ?

Can t the advisers to MR raise the crucial questions why he stays indifferent to any crime perpetrated by those ministers ? To everyone´s eye current situation in the country is unacceptable. Perhaps, all advisers and ministers close to him cant approach MR easily. Meaning this man should be a deceiver and dictator by every means. How long he can behave to this manner – until the nation is fully gone to pieces ? All these raise by many – in the island today.

  36. WE HAVE BECOME A PEOPLE THAT IS ADDICTED TO CRIME AND VIOLENCE SO MUCH SO THAT A CRIMINAL WHO HAS PERPETRATED A WRONG; WHO HAS PHYSICALLY ASSAULTED AN ARMY OFFICER WILL HAVE THE AUDACITY TO TURN UP THE FOLLOWING DAY AT A TEMPLE AND THEN WALK AWAY SCOT-FREE FROM THE PRESENCE OF A POLICE FORCE OF OVER 1000! WHAT A SHAME! BUT WHY? BECAUSE THERE IS NO PROPER JUSTICE SYSTEM IN PLACE. THE JUDICIARY HAS GONE TO THE WILD PREDATORS! HAD A COMMON MAN ASSAULTED AN ARMY OFFICER; THE WHOLE ARMY WOULD HAVE STEPPED ON THE POOR MAN’S NECK AND NOT ONLY WIPED HIM OUT FROM THE FACE THE EARTH BUT ALSO HIS FAMILY. THIS IS WHAT WE CALL FREE AND FAIR TRIAL IN SRI LANKA!

LET US FIGHT UNTIL TRUTH AND JUSTICE PREVAIL IN THIS COUNTRY. ALL WHAT WE NEED IS A SPARK TO IGNITE A FIRE! BUT THE FOREVER QUESTION IS; WHO IS THERE THAT WILL PROVIDE THIS SPARK?

  37. There is no different between Mervin kissing MR feet and MR kissing the tarmac at Bandaranayake airport. Both for same reason and purpose.

  38. To paraphrase reader Anura here. A wag suggested politicians and baby’s nappies have to be changed regularly – for the same reason.
