The Sunday Leader’s new owner Asanga Seneviratne terminated its editor Frederica Jansz’s contract and replaced her early on in the week with Sakuntala Perera a former journalist employed at Wijeya newspapers.

Asanga Seneviratne on Thursday September 13, 2012 announced to staff at The Sunday Leader and its sister newspaper the Iruresa that he was the new owner. That the takeover of the two newspapers was official. Colombo Telegraph reliably learns that Seneviratne’s stake in the two newspapers is 72% with former owner Lal Wickrematunge holding 28%. Wickrematunge however remains as Chairman. Asanga Seneviratne has been heard consistently touting the name of the President claiming close connections. How factual this maybe is not clear. However Seneviratne and Sajin Vaas Gunewardena share a close relationship.
Despite having repeatedly assured Frederica Janszof maintaining editorial independence, four days after Asanga Seneviratne visited the offices of The Sunday Leader at Ratmalana where he addressed editorial and other staff insisting that his intention to change editorial content to suit “President Mahinda Rajapaksa was only rumour” he on Monday September 17 wrote Frederica an email asserting, that “Very few people actually read the paper anymore.” He added to Frederica that articles carried in The Sunday Leader are, quote, “malicious and degrading and is mostly targeted at the First family. This is definitely not the way we want to continue,” he said, unquote.
“Some inside page articles are pure rubbish and only degrades the President,” he told Jansz.

Speaking to Colombo Telegraph Frederica Jansz said, “I repeatedly offered my resignation to Seneviratne before the sale of the newspaper asserting that if he wished to make this paper pro government or pro Rajapaksa he would have my resignation. He however, repeatedly assured me that he had no intention of taking the paper down that road insisting he needed me at the helm to continue maintaining an independent press. Clearly, he never meant what he said.”
Frederica added that she tried to accommodate Seneviratne by even agreeing to have delivered to him a CD of the final paper before it went to publication which she did no sooner he took over. Seneviratne however insisted he never received the CD which was delivered as agreed to his officer once the newspaper was finalized on Saturday September 15.
“I agreed to this arrangement despite my never having had to do this during my entire 3 1/2 year tenure as Editor in Chief. Have the owner peruse the final pages before print. This has been the editorial policy of The Sunday Leader during the entire 14 year tenure of my predecessor Lasantha Wickrematunge and mine after I took office. Nevertheless, since I was determined to make this new arrangement work for the betterment of the newspaper I agreed to allow Seneviratne to see the pages before going to press.”
Seneviratne however not only did not appreciate this gesture but together with Sajin Vaas Gunewardena is believed to have manipulated a complaint to police on Monday September 17, asserting that two nutshells published on the front page of the newspaper could incite violence against President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The “Nutshell” column has been published in The Sunday Leader for the last 18 years and are written tongue in cheek or in lighter vein. Frederica told ColomboTelegraph this column has never been intended to cause harm or incite violence against any individual. Seneviratne however together with Sajin Vass Gunewardena did not agree. Despite the fact that not a single member of President Rajapaksa’s family nor his head of security have complained that the nutshell in question was offensive or in anyway threatening to the security of the President.
On Friday September 21, Seneviratne terminated Frederica’s contract with immediate effect. He replaced her early on in the week with Sakuntala Perera a former journalist employed at Wijeya newspapers. Colombo Telegraph has made repeated attempts to contact Sunday Leader Chairman Lal Wickrematunge for clarification on the issue, but the Lal has remained unreachable so far.

Federica, you did the correct thing by waiting for Asanga to sack you than resign. His action confirms the new managements philosophy – remove those who are not on MR’s side. They tried to stop the paper by burning it down, threatening employees, putting them behind bars and sadly killing their editor – none were successful. Finally, only the company act has come to their rescue, well at least they did it the official way ! To Asanga, we all were of the view that you were a true gentlemen who got a good foundation from a great school. Sadly you have got caught up in the power and fame game which is for sure going to also contribute towards your down fall. Remember the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill went up the hill?? I was never a fan of Lal’s ownership or Frederica’s Editorship, because both were achieved by dubious and deceitful means that the two aforementioned know. So in a manner of speaking they got what they deserve.
However on a different point of media freedom, the threats that owners of media face by the repressive policies of the regime, have muzzled all journalists, including those at the Sunday Leader, though the poor reader starved for some balanced news got the feeling that the Sunday Leader was actually balanced because they engaged some a few dubious worthless anti govt. bashing without getting at the blood and guts of the real state of Nation and its level of governance. They did not even get at the tip of the iceberg of massive con a few at the top are engaged in.
Journalists are not wealthy people and have to earn a living so they toe the line or leave the country. They have NO freedom to express anything. Even provincial journalists are beholden to the local politician thugs as otherwise they will not be able to live there or be given news items from which they can make a living. We must admit that true independence of journalists is absent in Sri Lanka as all Owners however balanced they are try to survive.
It is sad that two of those conners have now admitted to taking it over and good luck to them to see if they can make it work, whatever they intend to do with it. The public are obviously fools if they continue to patronize these publications, but it is their right to exercise their ignorance in any manner they wish.
It then only leaves the digital media, citizen journalist working for no pay and fearing for his life to fill the void, and I appeal to freedom loving patriots to take this lost space on their own, to bring out their personal experiences of the mismanagement and wholesale plunder of the nations wealth by a few. One day when the numbers of people who realize the extent of this take a stand we may be able to change the future direction. Until then it is a fools paradise.
God help mother Sri Lanka until its citizens wake up from their utterly uncaring slumber, without blaming or expecting other people to fight their battles on their behalf. It has to be unanimous, and instantaneous.
So citizen journalist blog to the rest of the citizens about your experiences so we can collect all the evidence against these crooks and one day bring them all to justice, the jury being the hardworking, patriotic and proud people of Sri Lanka, non of whom are currently in this Government!

A sad week for ‘free press’ in SL – a new chapter of sorts..
Not sure if we should stop buying the paper, but so long as Lal stays as chairman, we can support it in some small way.
The impunity of it all -two wheeler-dealers like sajin/seneviratne can even buy up the Leader -how ironical.
Why did lal sell to those jokers? I guess none of the cleaner biz. folk out there would invest in a paper that was unbowed/ unafraid ?!
Perhaps, its time that Frederica started her own paper or online blog similar to DBJS?
We are in for a rough ride here in SL -with the political brats getting away with their lil drug deals and others’ loosing their memory and being granted leave of absence for months on end. One of her star reporters Dinouk Colombage once described her boss Frederica Jansz as the “new crusader for truth in Sri Lankan journalism.” He said “She does not go like other men Editors with

As a one time journalist in Sri Lanka, it pains me a great deal to read all the comments, some in favor and others against. It is true that The Sunday Leader has published exposes and investigatory articles which their Sunday partners did not print. Some were factual whilst the others were from disgruntled tenderers or bidders for projecs who cry they did not win. Truth has been the casualty in those instances.
In my view, what has made The Sunday Leader different from all others is this. There was a readership, both in Sri Lanka and abroad, who abhorred the Rajapaksa family. The Sunday Leader went overboard with a feeding frenzy. Those readers to whom it was opium had multiple mental
orgasms reading the one sided and often questionable material.
What is Frederica Jansz’ contribution to her motherland and to Sri Lankan journalism? She antagonised all her colleagues and most political personalities because of her bias and not for being “unbowed and unafraid.” She has bowed many times. I will not say more. She became the Sri Lankan Journalist who has most pissed on Rajapakses. As Colombage claims,”the crusader of the truth” is not a messiah but a madam who prostituted journalism and insulted the intelligence of a section of the Sri Lankan population, in Colombo and abroad.
Now to the bitter truth. If she is bold, can she deny that she received two years of her entire salary as full pay. It was paid
pronto. That is not all. Why should a new owner who appoints a new
Editor tell Frederica not to criticize Rajapaksa? His instructions would naturally go to the new Editor. Those who have been tearing their head off have all been fooled by this imitation journo.
There is still one point in her favour. She has succeded in receiving a huge pay packet which some say includes part of the proceeds from
the sale by her close ally and [Edited out], Lal Wickremetunge of [Edited out].
She has also won acclaim in wire services, web reports and newspapers as a champion journalist who quit because she was asked to stop criticising the Rajapaksas. Decide for yourself whether it is true or false.

I can confirm what Sanjiva says because at the time that Asanga Seneviratne was rumoured to be taking over The Sunday Leader, I expressed my fears that “Unbowed and Unafraid” would cease to be the reality at the paper. She assured me that she had been promised that it would not be the case. She went on to tell me that she would be the first “to walk” if that happened and that I would be the first to know. She lived up to her word on both counts.
Nobody is perfect but Frederica Jansz has displayed more b…s than all the men abusing her can hope to possess in this world or the next! As for the other actors in this little melodrama, their actions speak far louder than anything they can say!

This is the worst news our motherland has heard since
Lasantha Wickrematunge’s death and Lasantha was the love of Media Freedom and Human Rights Life in Sri Lanka.
The Sunday Leader THE ONLY INDEPENDENT Newspaper to EVER grace Sri Lanka paid its biggest price for freedom of expression and human rights by sacrifising its founding editor.
Lasantha embodied the Leader and was always hailed by all as South Asia’s greatest journalist.
And it seemed only Jansz was able to keep his heroic work going.
