Fresh Investigation Begins Into Lasantha Murder

A CID investigation has been launched into the murder of Sunday Leader founder/editor Lasantha Wickrematunge.

lasantha_wickramatungaPolice media spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana speaking at a media briefing today had announced that the investigation has been handed over to the CID by the Police.

Meanwhile he had also stated that one of the suspects arrested during the previous investigation had died in prison while the other has been released on bail.

It has been over six years since Lasantha was murdered. During a remembrance vigil held this year Lasantha’s brother Lal Wickrematunge called upon the newly elected government to hold a fresh investigation into his murder.

It will be a gigantic task to make public the outcome of this investigation. Definitely, this murder was carried out with the knowledge of a VVIP, otherwise cracking this case should not have taken so long. Remember, this happened inside the HSZ and further more, this was a period when the roads had security check almost at every nook, corner and junction. According to Sri Lanka’s history, investigations of cases where very high profile persons are involved have never seen results, even with an opposition is in power. This is the internal bond with the old bad guys and the so called new ruling guys. Thus if this case is cracked and the culprits are punished, that itself will be a historical first in Sri Lanka, which obviously will never happen.

Do we hear Sarath Fonseka say “well, some bad comes with the good”.

Is his freedom and pardon going to be short lived when the truth comes out?

It won’t come out if he is involved.

“This is the internal bond with the old bad guys and the so called new ruling guys.”

Both the new and old boys always have something to hide therefore it has always been about gentlemen’s agreement between old and new which save their back.

I hate to see another investigation going nowhere and even if report is prepared by investigating body it will not see the light of the day, well be swept under the carpet.

Instead of people attending Nugegoda rally they should gather in front of President’s resident demanding result be published for the masses to see if justice has been to the family, friends and country at large.

RE: A CID investigation murder of Sunday Leader founder/editor Lasantha Wickrematunge.

Very Good. Investigate and Find who the Killers are and Punish them.

At Aluthgama they killed 12 people including extensive property damage.

The police arrested, yes arrested 12 while committing the crime.

after a few days, they were let go.,

Can you re-arrest those culprits. No investigation is necessary.

Is ” Inventigation: Another way of delaying Justice?

Aluthgama attack. They killed her Dad. !1 Were arrested and released. Why? Investigate!

Spark has hit the nail on the head. At the time of the murder fingers were pointed at MR, GR and SF or some combination thereof. I simply cannot imagine how the whole thing could have been swept under the carpet unless there was complicity at this level. Unfortunately, I am inclined to agree with Spark’s pessimistic expectations.

Though it seems Yahapalanaya is late and dragging it’s feet into investigations on much talked about mega corruptions and several of these murder cases, I am in the opinion there were challenges which required putting right prior to starting these investigations.

The present government inherited a law enforcement entity and a legal system which did not know how to function independently. Once the command structure was put in place thing will start rolling. I am confident in a short period of time we will start to see results and people will be taken in to custody with strong evidence which can be proven in front of court of law.

Besides the current rulers know very well if they don’t show results before the 100 days is over it will only make things difficult for them even to get on to a stage to campaign for the general election.

Appointing Yoshitha Rajapakse to his father’s security contingent is a well thought out matter, the guy is under investigation, there are still a 5 million + voters who are pro MARA, so best thing to do is let the guy hang around his dat while the case is built. Any way he is of no use to Navy.

Let’s give them bit of time RW is smart cookie President is a seasoned politicians. They will ensure MARA and rest of the Jarapassa will not be given an opportunity ever to plunder the country like they did.

Though in a hindsight it seems committing to the 100 days was not the best of options. There is a possibility postponing the elections by few months.

JVP has started slinging mud at ruling party purely for political reasons. JVP is having long term plans they know they cant come to power in the near future so they are adopting to smart talk, but that will only play in to the hand of MARA in the short term. On the other hand most politicians/parties are self centered dont give much about country.

Any murder trial begins with the reading of the post-mortem report on the body of the deceased.
This report is missing in this murder case.
Even the name of the medical officer who performed the PM Examination appears to be not known.
    Very mysterious.

What people fail to understand that Lasantha went to bed with the Rajapaksa’s and was a almost daily visitor to temple tress for the midnight drink. He overstepped his limits and the Rajapaksa’s couldn’t tolerate it. Lasantha was also an extortionist of the highest order. He made sure that many paid up upon his threats at exposure. While, no one has the right to kill other than on the orders of a court of law, we must also see how many put the noose of the rope at gallows on themselves thinking that they would have impunity for ever. The current Yahapalanaya government should prove otherwise

Lasantha never touched alchohol. Neither was he extorting or blackmailing anyone to NOT publish anything. He just was a good human and a damn good journalist. …

“Lasantha was also an extortionist of the highest order. He made sure that many paid up upon his threats at exposure.”

Why didn’t the public go public and make complaint to the police? Who was protecting Lasantha the extortionist extraordinaire?

Where can our CID find time to do this sort of work, which even the legal eagles with investigative powers couldn’t do?.

Besides our CID sleuths have more pressing cases which threaten our National Security. Territorial Integrity and massive Corruption.

I mean, the the big ticket items like Shshi’s dual passports and poor Tissa’s copy of that alleged promise of Ranil to give Sambandan his Homeland?.

Perhaps Aussie Prishantha may spill the bans there too..

Wasn’t he the Police Spokesperson then?….

One of the suspects died in prison. What’s his name?. Did he die of natural causes or was he killed?.
Perhaps an inquiry should also be held as to the cause of his death. I know it will never happen. He is a very small fry.

It is to take the international steam off the only high profile journalist killing.
Will it be Gota’s Achilles heel??
Will Yoshitha now behave like the former Nepali royalty and shoot them all when the going gets tough?

Lasantha’s murder in broad daylight and in a HSZ has blotted the nation as no other. A cowardly act, the investigation of this should have ranked the top priority of the present regime. The might of a regime against a defenceless person, A real shame.

I welcome this move, with all my heart! Although, it is too late, better late than never! Lassantha’s murder was a Murder, Most Foul! It is a heinous crime and it is more heinous if the murderer/s are unpunished! I only hope this Govt. will genuinely investigate this most cruel murder, without any fear or favour, honestly and impartially so that Justice will be done. Justice should not only be done but IT SHOULD BE SEEMED TO BE DONE!

A Lot of talk about investigations of this gruesome murder. Why not put out what is known in the public domain so that fellows can see what is going on and thus prevent hiding the truth?

Firstly, where is the murder weapon. There was a spray of bullets round his car, if that is so what is the bullet type and is the identity of that gun or guns known? Secondly, some say a special device that is used to kill cows was used on his head. Is that correct and if so is the identity of that weapon found?

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. COME OUT WITH EVERYTHING YOU FELLOWS KNOW IF THIS MURDER.

Unless someone lies to exact revenge, this is one giant skeleton in the closet Ranil cannot handle until he wins absolute power. The fingers are pointed at a really powerful collusion of powers that be. If you want a clue about who was behind such attacks, please focus on what happened to poor Keith Noyahr who was not only silenced but had to go into hiding and flee Sri Lanka. Keith is too afraid too talk because he is ashamed. But he should not be; he should come out and speak of his experience so justice can be done. Are somethings best left undiscovered? Remember CIA and MI-6 does not reveal secrets until the period to hide information behind state secrets and classified as top secret expire. That is usually 20 to 40 years after an incident of this nature.

Where was My3 when this murder took place in broad daylight. Unless Scotland detectives employed to find out the real culprit all it is very difficult to prove this gruesome murder. Everybody knows that Gota was behind this murder he has cleverly got rid of the murders and it is important to punish the Bowman than the arrow that is disappeared now.

This comment is for future reference. Despite all the
brouhaha, nothing will ever come out.Publicity over
fresh inquiries will go round and round but at the
end of it all there will be no results. No one will
be arrested or tried. The issue will die down.
Wait for one year and see whether this does not
    happen.
