Hemakumara Nanayakkara Has Made History

By Barbara Seneviratne –

Barbara Seneviratne

Mr. Hemakumara Nanayakkara has made history, he was not shy or afraid, its better late than never, he saw this devilish political business is going from bad to worse.

I wonder if it is the astrologer’s advice that this small country should have air ports at every corner, while the need for better roads at village level is ignored. Travelling by road brings people together within four hours one could reach north, south and east while enjoying the remarkable scenery which warms ones heart.

But since we are governed by corrupt politicians we have to deal with the appalling fact that millions of rupees are wasted at the expense of our children, elderly and general population. The SLFP politicians still have not grasped the fact that the cost of living has shot up after the war was ended and to add to this misery

Mr. Johnston Fernando has demanded that vegetables fruits to be transported in crates. What should one call these ignorant bagpipes.

Now to add fuel to the present burning questions the government have decided to go for local elections ahead of time which means a colossal sum of money will exchange hands. All activities in government institutions will be at stand still and this is also
another yoke round the necks of the unsuspecting population In the near future.it will not be a  surprise to read Julampitiya Amare’s name on a nomination list.

Well let say all our dreams are a washout hence we are forced to accept that violence, corruption is on the throne and without doubt this country will become ungovernable.

Well said Barbara and thank you.

Hat off to Hemekumara for taking this brave step. Wait and see now the attack dogs will be unleashed to bad mouth Hemakumar. That is what they did to General Fonseka who stood up against this ruthless regime.

Lalith, I fail to understand the Logic behind cheering of Barbara or Hemakumara. It is this Barbara type that supported a set of Political Opportunists from the centre left, for them to climb the social ladder. Now that they are being discarded by their own Party Heads, they are lamenting and complaining. The likes of Hemakumara are people without Principles, who crossed over to the MR’s govt. not for the love of the country but for self aggrandizement. These type of characters are lost causes and should be shunned by the public, with the contempt they deserve.

Richardson, why don’t you take your own advice more seriously, because most of your comments are removed by CT for not confirming to civilised discourse. Further you seem to have a limited vocabulary calling everyone else a ‘moron’other than yourself, leaving the readers to assess that the reference suits you better. Do try to get a better life and improve your vocabulary to enjoy a decent, civilised manner of expresssion.

Those who think Hemakumara suddenly grew a continence is sadly mistaken. People should listen to what he has said before he decided to “strengthen-President’s-what-ever” and what he said afterwards to understand this mans hypocrisy.

Anyone who opposes Rajapaksa does not automatically become a good guy instantly. He’ll have to earn it back. Convincing someone like Barbara doesn’t seem to take much (wink, wink) but it is a different case with most other people.

Thanks for speaking out finally! The fact is that the Rjapakse Bros and sons have divided up the looting of Lanka nicely into sectors! Gota the goon has MILITARY BUSINESSES and related land grabs with the UDA including for Golf Courses for the Navy in Trinco, Basill Mr 20 percent has TOURISM BUSINESSES and associated Land grabs for cronies hotels, and the brat NAMAL has SPORTS BUSINESS from car racing which is killing people (drag racing and night racing) to Carlon sports, beach games, and rugby sevens. Please Ask the geriatric leftists MP who support this military dictatorship that is looting Lanka to do something about it.. Perhaps they can educated the old SLFP party members about the need to get rid of the family to save the party..

Kalpana is right! Like the building of so many white elephant domestic airports for Rajapakse and family to fly in and out of, the plan is also for Namal the BRAT to build sports stadia all over the country at huge costs (wonder who the contractor is – another family member?) as if Lanka has no other pressing development priorities such as fixing the EDUCATION SECTOR and the universities and providing better accomodation to University students.

Thanks for this! Barbara, Could you please do a favour and ask DEW to STOP Cabraal at the Central Bank’s indebting future generations in Lanka by stopping the $1 billion bond (government debt), issue and investigate that Criminal Clown at the Central Bank for financial negligence and waste of public funds on the Hambantota Commonwealth Games bid scam?

What is the urgency for an airport at nuwara eliya against which Nanayakkara protested – at this time when the country’s economy is on the brink of disaster? The government should justify. The rupee has depreciated to a record low.
The CHOGM meeting next year needing massive expenses will make this worse.

Well, the country can do without additional airports, expressways, harbors which eat into the precious little land mass we have in Sri Lanka.

But this stuff is essential to the way Rajapaksas operate. Rs 0 x 10% = 0 (no spending; no commissions). And this is how people who Rajapaksas are indebted to (during 40 years in politics) will be allowed to make a killing by quoting for projects 10 times more than the actual cost. And people will end up paying the loans that have been taken out to pay for these projects.

Will people of Sri Lanka ever be smart enough to recognize the value in choosing a leader who is not heavily in-debt to others? Old guard in media, who’re in bed with these politicians will not point this out to you anyway.

What a stupid woman she is? These are the journalists, and the people float around in higher echelons with ministerial partners and friends, whose opinions count in the end. With people like her, no wonder we are where we are now. The best somebody could do is to tell her, that her sell by date is gone, she is stuck in the past. she has no idea about the rest of the country, she believes the village today is what it was when she was a kid. She doesn’t know that there are rural infrastructure development projects.Of course that’s not enough, but to advocate against mega development projects, airports or high ways, she must be nuts. If people like she lived in early 20th century, we would still be travelling in bullock carts.

Hemakumara has made history many a time before too. He once tried making history by trying to do a PhD at Peradeniya while being an MP. I bet he couldn’t bribe a prof there so he couldn’t get it done. Also he hopped to the UNP once, where he wasn’t treated well, despite his green shawl, which made him swap the colour of the shawl at the mercy of the president again. He made history again when he retired from politics, which is unusual for a low-key politician, because nobody notices when he is in and out. Proving that all roads lead to Rome, he made history again when he accepted the advisory position (of the president with whom he wasn’t happy) where there was no real job but a label. Now he’s made history again.
Well what does all this really mean? One thing, that is,he is not a great politician, his service has been abysmal, but he lives by nothing but astrology, where he moves his position/location depending on the star positions. What an idiot!

A country’s development is not measured by mega infrastructure projects but from indicators such as millennium development goals MDGs and Human development indicators HDIs. all countries are bound by these with specific time bound goals. Currently SL if far behind in achieving these goals and more over our basic infrastructure facilities such as hospitals are appalling and the poor even cant afford to access such basic services without undergoing immense hardships.

if any body especially the younger generation think the country needs all this show mega projects which caters only to a super rich class ( not even 1% of the population)and selfish corrupt politicians who are ruling our country i feel sorry the future generation.

    • 0
      0

So the arguement is, stop mega projects, distribute food and build a few hospitals? Is it what is called the bottom-up method? And the HDI will shoot up with that, will it? At the moment madam, the rich calls the doctor in, while the poor takes days to get to the hospital. Big infrastructure development projects, ports, airports, power projects, or highways will always be met with vehement protest from the lot who is unable to understand the reality. For them, wealth creation, job creation, infrastructure building belong to God: the government’s duty is to provide food.

    • 0
      0

Truth, my foot. Kundasale or Pesali, people will always protest. All over the world, Germany, Britain, or anywhere else, there are protests against airport expansion/construction. But mega projects should always happen in developing countries ike ours. We may not see benefits immediately, but these are long term projects. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced during Mahaveli projects, but the government was so powerful the protests never saw the light of the day. If the government gave into the protestors, the whole country would be in dark today. There were strong protests against the Norochcholai power plant, which delayed its construction by almost a decade. The loss to the economy must have been huge but where are the protestors now? Eppawala phosphate case is another. Quite likely, what Kundasale people may be saying is, just like what Norochcholai people were saying, an airport is OK but slightly away from my home. Of course there are issues, like whether feasibility studies have been done, but unfortunately, those real issues are not what the protestors protest about.

    Duminda,

This big picture, the so called Airport will be a Landing strip for International Narcotic operations. It is a matter of time Sri Lanka becomes another Mexico with drug wars where the main drug lords are served and protected by this regime. Duminda and Mervin has a card blanch of unrestricted power to act at one’s own discretion; unconditional authority with the blessing of Maharaja. May god have mercy on Sri Lanka!

    Better late than never.

Hemakumara should now join General SF and plot a strategy to rescue the country back from Rajapakse clan’s grip.

Infact all oppostion forces and UPFA politicians with any self-respect should now join hands to liberate Sri Lanka from the ruling family and their corrupt cronies.

It will not be easy. But, if Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and now Syria can. Sri Lanka can too. It must be done.

In the meantime, insane Rajapakse & Bro. Co. Ltd. will run massive, useless projects such as ports, airports and roads. Collect a lot of commissions. Leave the country indebted and in ruins.

For Sri Lanka time is running out.

As far as I know, Hemakumara was previously a politician, therefore the defeated politician worked for this president. In Sri Lanka UNP, SLFP, etc., are just names and their party platform is some how come to power cheating the voters.

So, my explanation is that an very ambitious person is preparing for the next job and nothing at all. Because, I heard, he already has become the electoral organizer for one electorate. I heard, in Sri lanka, govts can win twice and can stay popular for a total of SEVEN years and, after that, they become UNPOPULAR. Previous presidents also had the same problem during the second time of the govt and, that is ministers start going on their own and stop listening to the president.

For me, this is just one such incident.

Here, I know after a few times, when the govts become unpopular, politicians, mostly quit the cabinet and go to the private sector. While some other MPs who have conscience, they start criticizing the govt and some times get fired or leave the governing party and go sit as independent YET they don’t join the opposition.

But, Sri Lankan politicians do not have any such standards. It is just greed, fraudlent life and exploiting voters in order to become billionaires.

Thank you Ms.Barbara. I am sorry that so many GOSL ministers do not have the vision you and some commentators have. When they built Norochcholai power plant they were talking exporting electricity to India. What is happening now with constant power cuts and high rates. Kany, Nuwara eliya airports and hotels for tourists while cities are plagued with dengu and high crime, murder and arrests of dissidents are taking place. A fake development with borrowed money is the greatest enemy of Sri Lanka today.

    • 0
      0

Barbara’s vision??to stop projects?? And our economy is so tiny that we should stop borrowing and infrastructure building aswell?? That’s the idea JVP promoted in 1980s. It’s not only Norochcholai, but when Mahaveli projects were launched, Gamini Dissanayake/JRJ also boasted about exporting electricity to India. Unfortunately, since Mahaveli projects, no mega power projects due to the war, protests and today the plan is to import electricity. There is nothing politics or magic can do, unless more power stations are build, the rates will be higher and cuts will be frequent when monsoons fail.

What barbra failed to see or read through was Hemakumara’s strategy.
He was just bidding for time to grasp the situation on the ground take a firm grip of the turf.

Now the time is ripe and he made the move.

As for Barbara, going by the looks of her in the photograph is too senile to fathom giles of Hemakumara.
Hope Barbara has no connection to that great Australian Seneviratnes………..
No wonder she has scrathched the surface to praise him & raise him.

Balal K”riya…. why speculate. Provide input with real facts.

Exactly right. My suspicion is that he is looking to get an invitation from the Fonseka or UNP camps (preferably UNP but he can’t just walk in after walking out to “strengthen-Presidents-…). Until then he’ll act as a “free-agent”.

But I think your take on Barbara Seneviratne is misguided. If you consider that politicians, clergy, journalists and Prof. & Doc., they are all in the same handful of lifeboats, scratching each others backs, then I believe you will see what Barbara has said in a new light (but the sight will not be any more pleasant I’m afraid). Knowing that the gal has been in it for a long time, you can imagine the extent to which her testicles have reached.

    Rupert-

We all know Australia is a very wealthy country,no recession etc.Last year a mining town between Brisbane and Rockhapmton bringing in millions of A$ dollars a day in revenue to the state…it’s just now that a cost/benefit study for a airport is underway, and IF it warrants a airport who will fund it? They take it seriously ,these rich countries.

Brisbane State govt say mining companies may have to partner if at all. However,we in Lanka are richer and have the funds to build any airport anywhere.I guess We are so rich we don’t need to worry about cost/benefit either?

    • 0
      0

Mango, Australia is a developed country. There are plenty of airports, highways and ports there. When they built them first, they were probably like us. Increasing infrastructure/person/GDP, now they do it carefully. Because without any further development, they still are OK.Ours is a different ball game. People only talk about politics. During the war, there was so much leg pulling, the criticism for the Galle Highway has still not stopped. Mind you, there was criticism when the colonial government constructed the first road in the country. then there were protests when Katunayake airport was built. Criticism and protest was so strong againt Mahaveli projects but the government was powerful enough to suppress them. They will always find reasons but we need to develop infrastructure. Women like Barbara who live either in Colombo or London don’t understand the rality. Our economy is weak, in 20 years time, we will still be like this but infrastructure construction will be even costly.

We need roads and Infratructure, even HE Premadasa did the same thing and it was the correct thing to do. Just by reducing the prices of sugar and parrippu , you cant develop a nation. from the contents and tone of the comments it is clear that most of the comments posted are from members of Diaspora living in the first world or the ME who merely pay lip service to the Rajapakse regime all because of the ending of the war. For them SL’s burning issues are topics to be discussed after gatherings and party with expensive alcohol. These discussions of course help to digest their food and clear their conscience.

Its high time all members of the Sri Lankan diaspora who have positive outlook on the of REGIME who nostalgically and romantically view the motherland should return to clean up and develop the country rather than making dollars, euros. Forming opinions while not being on the spot is like adding insult to injury.

Why is it that all those who think we need new roads in Sri Lanka don’t argue that we need these roads must be built correctly. If you are so smart to understand the importance of infrastructure for a country’s economy, why is it that you don’t realize a foot of asphalt on top of the existing road is not how you build lasting road networks?

Or is this just what they broadcast on the UPFA learning channel these days? Other countries must be envious of the flock of parrots the gov. has got.

I believe that the writer is not aware how Hemakumara played leapfrog and jumped from the UNP to the UPFA and how he justified this action by saying that he wants to strengthen the president’s hands. Men like Hema kumara have no principals and should be considered as political scum as their only objective to do politics is for personal gain. I wonder why he spoke against MR after fawning and falling over him in such a shameless manner for so long.

Mr Rupert I respect your comments, you have the right to view your thoughts. Its Ok you calling me stupid,May be you are a young man who has not been taught to respect elders. In my case I was 22years old when my husband met me,he was a doctor with socialist ideas, his first presents to me were books on Lenin, Carl Marx,I did not know who they were. But I struggle on and read when he visited me our discussion was on these subjects for which Iam very grateful. In fact my father thought we were bad,he was the chief Electrical engineer at Browns Co.

In 1956 we were in London for our studies, I joined the London Communist party, branch, while studying and working ,I sold the Daily Worker, Communist Party paper. In 1960 came and joined the Ceylon C.P. my gurus Dr.S.a.Wickramasinghe, Pieter kenaman, Shanmugam, M.G.Mendis
I was a full time cader resigned in 1994. and did part time work.
I had the opportunity to work among distinguish politicians, Dudley Senanayaka, J.R.J.& Mrs S.B
I also had the opportunity to participate inInternational seminars
and met leading socialist learders, one was Com:Castro at Ethopia.
Well to come back to our differences a country needs development, but after 30 years of war the country was devastated, The presidental election in 2005 people had hopes, they trusted MR because he was really good how he managed the labour, and fisheries ministries and also as the opposition leader his march with the masses agianst the cost of living, promising to do away dynast, napotism, corruption
drug trafficking etc this gave great hopes, but the people are wittnessing now a very different, development, just the very opposite
which in the long run the country will be in debt for generations to
    generations,

The choice of the masses is for a foundation of the nation to be built upon the rights of the people, administrations must be entrusted to experts. Ministers, members of parliament are not state grandios, but chauffeurs, physicians, carpenters. The government should have a clear definitive vision. We want a society where people are free to make choice, mistakes to be generous and compassionate.

So Mr Rupert shall we say you ,me and all others do not want hunbugs

    Barbara
etc gave great hopes to the people that he would be a devoted, uncorrpt
uncorrupt, his promise to eradicate dynasty ,nepotism, free media etc

Barbara, Thank you for your comment, I appreciate your views . Also I didn’t mean to cause you any upset, I am sorry for calling you that way but that aside, I stand by my comments. What I can’t stand is ignorance. During the Galle higheway construction, there were so many protests or opposing comments everywhere. Any mega project meets with criticism. That was the same during the war too. This is not because people care about others but what they reflect is their politics. Now the university academic problem, you see, the comments are all against the family rule than any rational arguement. I can see, you are still lost in the dark. If you trusted this president and voted for him,and if he doesn’t deliver his promises, what you did was a mistake. Trust does not work in today’s politics, espcielly in the third world, we have to be brutally honest. If you trust another and vote for him tomorrow, you will still be cursing that guy in two years down the line. What we need is a new political setup. This political culture has no room for any decency and good governance. However, the current system is so tasty that anybody who get there doesn’t want to change anything. JR was not a distinguished politician but a nasty guy who destroyed the future of the country. It was he who messed the constitution up and now we are at a point of no return. It is his system that makes everybody else an animal.
Dudley was just a simpleton but Sirima was also mere politicians who groomed family politics. There is hardly any distinguished example you can take from the past.
Whatever it is, as things stand, major developments should happen in areas that were less developed. Protestors should look out and seek advice.

Barbara, excuse my intrusion, to quote you, ‘In my case I was 22years old when my husband met me,he was a doctor with socialist ideas, his first presents to me were books on Lenin, Carl Marx,I did not know who they were. But I struggle on and read when he visited me our discussion was on these subjects for which Iam very grateful. In fact my father thought we were bad,he was the chief Electrical engineer at Browns Co’.

I believe you were drawn towards Socialism, more so because for the love of your husband who had entertained Socialist ideas as a young Doctor, probably inspired by the stalwarts as Dr. S. A. Wickremasinghe, Pieter Kenuman, Colvin and crowd. All these leaders of the Left, came from the Elite class, educated in the West. Up untill the time they returned to the political arena after being qualified, the Political Field in the country was already full with Individuals engaged with Democratic Ideas. The only vaccum remaining was the ‘Left’ with Communism or Socialism. They also saw that the polity of the country had more rural and urban poor as against a handful of the middle and the upper middle class. Obviously they believed that to climb to the top politically a tailor made situation was available. Therefore they started to identify themselves with the masses as comrades and espoused vernacular education for the Natives, although they were proficient in English. They began to run down the system prevelant and moved with their new found Comrades, where some of the vagabonds in society joined the movement in eanestness of being recognised as somebody. These Elite Communist/Socialist lot could not make the impact they believed on the society as a whole, but managed to secure their constituencies. Unfortunately for them, another Humbug SWRD Bandaranayake a Western Educated Elite realising he had no place in the UNP for him to climb to the top, decided to sell the Socialist/Communist wine in a different bottle. Sinhala within 24 hours. Buddhism will be given it’s due place to rally the Buddhist Priests, ably assisted by Buddharakkitha/Wimala combine and another Humbug the Boralugoda Hyena Phillip Gunawardene another, who espoused vernacular education for the masses, but later crept in to the Capitalist UNP and thanks to Dudley Senanayake managed to get Scholarships for all his children to have an education overseas to qualify. This coalition managed to secure power of governance in 1956. Their hearts bled for the majority poor of this country. Although they secured political power the result clearly showed that the UNP as a single party had the biggest vote bank consisting of the rural poor and urban poor vote. The situation is not much different even today, after the UNP was hijacked for a period with non pods who amassed wealth to become somebody in society, because if a truely free and fair election is held the results will show. The UNP as a single Political Party has the biggest vote base, mind you supported by the poor of this country as the party that had done much for the poor by opening Colonisation Schemes, Shelter for the poor, providing water for Irrigation to the Farmers and Mahaweli Hydropower for the Industry to grow. These are land mark achievements the whole society has benifited from, irrespective of Political differences. The SLFP led coalition govts. always boasted of representing the poor of the country. But the only lot who benifited by and large from their governance was the Party Supporters and their families only.

I knew Surendra Wickremasinghe very closely, the son of Dr. S.A.Wickremasinghe. He used to tell me how Phillip Gunawardene used to come and sit on the varandha floor and listen to his father Dr. S.A. Wicks. and the background of Phillip Gunawardene, although his progeny pretend to be the Elite today. I also knew Oueda Kenuman who was earlier married to Justin Jayawardene a Lawyer and their children who were at his house at Flower Road. During the period ’70 to ’77 these Left leaders rode the high horse during an era the average people were denied of cheese, butter, imported chocolates, chewing gum, apples and grapes as they were banned items, stating they were the food of the affluent. I remember Pieter Kenuman’s house refrigerator was always full of these stuff and I have been helped to sample some. I thought to myself what hypocrites they were. The fact that they were all HUMBUGS was proved when they were voted out of power in ’77 not by the Rich UNPers, but by the poor voters of this country. When will our people ever learn?

I think that Hema, Babara & so on, all are the parts/wheels of MR’s govt machine. When there is no oil they may rumble but once MR applies some oil all the wheels may run on the command of MR.

In 1960 came and joined the Ceylon C.P. my gurus Dr.S.A.Wickramasinghe, Pieter Kenaman, Shanmugamdasa M.G.Mendis

We want a society where people are free to make choice, mistakes to be generous and compassionate.\

Most men think their cars are the extension of their manhood. In this forum some men think key board is the extension.

I suppose you would agree with Voltaire

“I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”.

The more they insult others they expose their own stupidity in greater measure.

Carry on girl say what you believe is the right think to say.

Very interesting comments coming from either sides.Hema is a fighter alright.Even when SLFP sank he won in Galle.Later he joined UNP like Mervin and won again.Subsequently he pulled a fast one to join MR.He may have thaught that his time is runing out and opted not to contest last time.MR still fed him.If he thinks that he can become a force to recon with under’Arabi Vasanthaya’ with some Dollars from CIA,he too will be a spent force like Chandi & infamous Ponseka/He was Fonseka when he was comanding the Army/ Masses of our country are not fools all the time.Let Hema taste his own medicine like Chandi & SF.Oh! this Nanas from Habaraduwa!except for Vasu.Do we need to have another Political Joker like Dahanayake from down sourth?

      Vernon says:

“Masses of our country are not fools all the time.”

When did they cease being fools?

Please give me some proof. Their stupidity is the envy of the world.

Hemakumaras political acrobatics are not worth a discussion but the development that is taking place is.
I have heared many times from many people who have travelled and visited places, how wonderful those places and their laments when will we have that kind development in our country, now look at what people say when it is being done!
It is alright to loan for development, not for consumption,we must not forget we are a nation that gulped tons of wheat flour on credit, thankfully not anymore.
A 10% or a 20% commision on development projects also should not be a big issue,Its the way it has been done, atleast since 1977. Also, ask yourselves who will do it for nothing now a days.
Corruption is here to stay, not only in our country, globally. We better learn to live it. It is not only the politicians and officials that a re corrupt the whole society is corrupt. Every one wants a piece himself /herself.
As for this much talked about domestic airports, most who comment here don’t seem to understand that this is only going to be runway 500meters the most and a waiting room. Looking at the positives,it will be the big business people who has to travel frequently in fuel guzzling cars wasting hours of valuable time who will use this most and keep it going as a business. A patient who needs to be airlifted could use it and occationally a poor soul like me who is really in a hurry to get home or whereever, never mind how much could use it.
Mrs.Seneviratne seems out of touch with the rural development now taking place and not only that the quality of the work also is better compared to the same work done before.
I blame three people for the dark hole this country was pushed in to.
1.J.R.Jayawardene for the 1983 idiotic debacle which plunged this country in to deep s**t and 1978 opening of the pandoras box.
2.Rohana wijeweera for the unnccessary revolt in 1971 and introducing the killing culture to this country.
3.Velupillai Prabhakaran for dragging this country back for decades and enflaming the nationalism in all races.
