  1. LSSP has taken its real stand after some time. THe Left should not forget that Dr. N.M.Perera in his Critical analysis of 78 Constitution indicated the loopholes of the Constitution. As he correctly identified in 78, now we are having a Constitutional crisis. It is the responsibility of the all progressive forces to get together to adopt a new constitution which guaranteeds rights of the citizens. THe Left still have intilectuals who could draft a good constitution…. Dear Prof. Tissa Vitarana now it is your time to let the remaining intellectuals of the party to take over the party.

  3. VAASI DEVA has gone public that he would vote in favour of the impeachment and has firmly maintained that the incumbent CJ should be removed. All because of VAASI. Shameless and Spineless R…..l.

  4. This issue should have been settled with discussions long before the conflict reach up to this level. The Central Committee of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) party seems to understand the gravity of the conflict. According to the news item in Colombo Page UN seem to be planning to implement their recommendations, they seem to be determined to take solid action. Is there a plan to commence an international tribunal? LSSP seem to understand that it is not wise to undermine the law and order situation under these circumstances.

“UN begins setting up Working Group to consider recommendations of internal review panel on Sri Lanka”

The United Nations has begun the process of setting up of a Working Group to consider the recommendations of the UN Secretary General’s Internal Review Panel on UN actions in Sri Lanka.

…The UN Chief set up the Internal Review Panel chaired by Charles Petrie to review the role of the world organization following the findings of the three-member Panel of Experts appointed by him earlier raised a number of significant issues, including those regarding the United Nations response to the civilian situation in northern Sri Lanka during the bloody final months of the war that ended in May 2009. “

It is very unfortunate individuals with vested interests brought up an impeachment while UN is setting up a Working Group to consider recommendations of the review panel. Impeachment is already having international consequences. Several countries issued statements at the United Nations.

  5. Tissa Vitharane few days back told DailyFT that he is convinced that CJ is guilty. If so why didn’t he present this fact to the LSSP Central Committee and convince them that he should participate in the Debate and also vote for it. What is this hypocrisy. Tell one thing to the public and a different tune to the Party’s CC.

  6. Hi. Panditha,

Presume that the majority of CC may have taken a view contrary to Tissa V and he might have thought that ‘comming colours not good and the ultimate result would be to oust him from the LSSP’. Now he has changed………………One choice left to Tissa- whether to go with the party or let the ‘Rebels’( Lal Wijenayake, Dr. Jayampathy Wickramaratne etc- Principled LSSPers who campaigned tirelessly against the illegitimate move from the beginig) to take over the party. If Party goes to the hands of rebels, it is the end of Tissa Vitarana as a politician…….Real Katussa.

  7. Dear Abeysinghe – HE The President knew of all the impending problems that would come along his way beginnig from March 2013. That is why in his own wisdom said ” I was not in favour of this Impeachment”.

But unfortunately for him and the country and the nation at large, that “sixth sense” faded away due to the influence of “all powers and experts” of “hidden enemies but open friends”. Sorry to say that HE has given the sward to these “vulturs” to kill the fly sitting on his head. They will collectively hit the fly with all the might.

Better not to speak of this “left”. They have secured “jobs” in the Government and it is their attempt to safeguard those positions to their last breadth. May “Rest In Peace” – the “Left”.

  8. LSSP is one of the oldest political parties. It played a significant role in the independence movement. It is a party that has upheld what is right and what it felt was in the best interests of the country. I am happy to see that they have once more decided on a course of action in the best interests of the country.

  10. The LSSP and the CP since 1964 faced regular dilemmas. Principles or
Opportunism? They generally went with Opportunism – that now includes
Prof Vitharna, Vasu and DEW. The challenge this time is different. On the one hand is an ugly anti-people attack on the office of the highest position in the judiciary by a desperate and rogue regiment- that must be defended. On the other hand is that unenviable position where the holder has lost all credibility and is caught virtual red-handed in more than one instance of naked corruption.

    Quo Vadis?

  11. Although the Left or the communists or Wimal Weerawanse castigate west as Colonialists, or imperialists or Capitalists it is the west who helped ri Lanka to unite under one flag, as before SL was Governed by Indian Kings.

Also during and after Indebendence the British and the West helped us a lot with PL84, aids, scholarships etc..etc..

Alsl during Tsunami They helped both Monetary and material support.

But now because of President’s anti Western behaviour he has not declared this floods as National Disaster and reluctant to ask their help to fund the Flood Victims…..which I guess is a huge infrastructure, loss of property. life and agriculture, livelyhood, life stock, schools etc…..Also president’s friendly countries have not come forward to help.

It is better if some society or opposition parties should call for International help…..as it is nobody else, but only the victims who suffer and they are helpless and need help.

I found the policy is no longer accessible.
And I cannot understand why my comment was unpublishable in the light of the often outrageous, crude, vulgar, etc, comments that CT DOES carry! Surely, mine was not even offensive like many of those. So what IS CT’s “Comment policy”?

  13. Never mind that the Central Committee of the LSSP may have come to its meeting in a three-wheeler and gone home in a two-wheeler; the fact that Rajiva like appointed MPs bragging to vote against impeachment alone proves that there is a functioning democracy within the ruling coalition.

As we have been saying all along, this tussle is not a fight to save the law and to beat the dictatorship as some pundits portray it but an experiment to divide this country. It has become a political match between the government that decimated the terrorists and won us the freedom and the opposition that opposed it to reach their own goals is another matter. At the presidential election they found an egoistic army commander. This time, they set up a beleaguered CJ for their dirty move. But they’ll lose this match as well for majority people by far are with MR.

When those that backed the losers of the presidential election realized that they cannot get what they wanted through ballot, they tried HR commissions to get their wishes. When that didn’t work, they tried to bring about various types of ‘Arab springs’ here. When that failed, they started to work on judiciary to twist the constitution. Impeachment is the direct outcome of that.

As we simple Simons understand it, the Constitution allows Executive to rule, Parliament to legislate laws and judiciary to interpret the law. There is nothing to interpret in Article 107(3) for any one can understand it. But Court had interpreted it by taking cognizance of only one part of the sentence as the law and dropped the other part of it. Former CJ says, just one part a sentence in the constitution cannot be the law to judge the judges. Dropping ‘or Standing Orders’ part of the sentence is like making a new law. The Judiciary cannot make laws; it is the function of the Legislature. This is a coup d’état to over throw the government in power. Conspirators cannot be allowed to go unpunished.

I am positive, this episode will be over very soon but what’s the next episode?

So the UGC people have initiated this process after a Supreme Court Judgment regardless of impending problems for the entire nation. Does the President know that they have messed up with the entire admission procedure for the coming years as well.
They don’t publish the cut off marks keep it covered up from the public. For the cumming years also there will be irregularities and there is lot of room for corrupt procedures.

      • If they have initiated and created this protracted conflict between the Judiciary and the legislature, only resignation or removal of all officials connected to initiating an impeachment will bring and end to the never ending trouble facing the government and the Judiciary. They have created new issues which would bring disastrous consequences to the nation.

  17. According my sources in the LSSP, Tissa Vitarana and YG Padmasiri (the MP who first signed the impeachment motion and later withdrew the signature as directed by the Politbureau) want very much to vote for the impeachment and had earlier canvassed Central Committee members to support their position. They both first said at the CC meeting that LSSP should support the impeachment. However, CC members such as Ven. Baddegama Samitha and Tissa’s own Private Secretary Keerthi Kariyawasam (Provincial Councillor from Kalutara) had taken up the position that the LSSP should go along with the decision of the Socialist Alliance to abstain from voting. CC members from the Left Tendency (Lal Wijenayake, Asoka de Silva, Jayampathy Wickramaratne and Wimal Rodrigo) also stated that the Party should go along with the decision of the Socialist Alliance. When more and more CC members loyal to Tissa Vitarana deserted him and he was certain to get defeated, Tissa had done a 180 degree turn and said the Party must take a unanimous decision. He then requested MP Padmasiri to change his position and go along with the majority but Padmasiri insisted on a vote being taken. The vote was 26-14, with Vitarana going along with the majority. Padmasiri and his supporters had gone away without even talking to Vitarana, saying “moo apiwa kewa”.
