Mahinda Has Got Alzheimer’s

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

The Ada Derana of February 27th this year reports a speech made by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa where he stated that, “not only politicians but their wives and children have to be safeguarded from the government now, as they are being harassed one by one by one.” Rajapakse was referring to the recent arrest of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa’s wife, Shashi Weerawansa, on charges of falsifying documents to obtain a Diplomatic Passport. He was speaking at the Colombo National Hospital after having visited Mrs. Weerawansa who was warded in the hospital.

Rajapaksa condemned this act as being “hateful politics,” or the politics of revenge. “I believe it’s wrong to do such things to extract revenge from politicians,” Rajapaksa added. Capping it all the former President reportedly said,” I didn’t do that. No one can point the finger at me. This is why I can point the finger at others”

Mahinda’s Alzheimer’s

Mahinda Rajapaksa has got Alzheimer’s. Most pollies do; but this statement by MR represents the peak of a variant of Alzheimer’s disease known as political Alzheimer’s.

Mahinda_Cell_PhoneThe disorder known simply as Alzheimer’s disease is defined as a progressive degeneration of brain cells that causes memory loss, thinking skills, emotions, behavior and mood. In the political version of the disease there is no physical damage to brain cells. The memory loss and the stultification of emotions is virtually unconsciously generated to overcome guilt for heinous misdeeds. The misdeeds can include lying, cheating, bribery, theft of public property or of the spouses of others. Most politicians live on promises they know they cannot fulfill. They lie. Members of Parliament are entrusted with power over us and many do abuse that power or utilize that power to gain advantages for themselves or their families or parties. They lie to conceal the abuse and thereby pretend innocence. In all instances they conveniently forget the specific offence and the lie and get along without batting an eyelid. Quite cool, they are.

Even exercising great caution to be fair I don’t think Sri Lanka has seen any leader who has taken revenge on his competitors and opponents as Percival Mahinda Rajapakse had done during his ten years of rule. I say “rule,” and not stewardship deliberately as Mahinda exercised the considerable power he received from the Constitution and added still more powers just in order to rule lie a monarch. He thought he was entitled to ownership of the country and his whole style of management was based on such an implicit assumption. By extension, other key men and women of the executive shared the sense of entitlement.

Two Examples

Take the start of his rule after the war had been won. Soon after the war President Mahinda Rajapaksa praised General Sarath Fonseka as ‘the greatest army commander in the world,” thereby acknowledging the decisive role that the General had played in winning the 27-year-old war. General Fonseka decided to contest Rajapaksa at the following Presidential elections. Rajapaksa won. It is particularly easy for a victor to show generosity toward an opposing competitor. Evidently, Rajapaksa had no reserve of generosity in his breast. He got the Fonseka jailed on a framed up charge. The normal procedure is to have the civil courts hear the charges because such a court has a high standard of rigour with regard to evidence and the accused gets a fair chance. But Rajapaksa wasn’t interested in that. He placed the case before a Military Court. Fonseka complained that some of the members of that Court were his former subordinates in the army whom he had punished. That preliminary objection was overruled and the Military Court proceeded to convict Fonseka. Rajapaksa did not stop at that: He took away Fonseka’s hard-won medals of honour and even his citizenship. The records at military headquarters where Sarath Fonseka was army commander were deleted, leaving a ludicrous situation where the war had been won without an army commander.

While SF was in this state of incarceration Rajapaksa went after his son-in-law over some trifling issue. The son-in-law now states that he was pressurized to give some damning ‘evidence’ against his father-in-law. The young man, Danushka, fled underground as the only option.

The third case was that of Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, our 43rd Chief Justice. CJ had turned down the Rajapaksa sibling- Minister Basil’s Bill on the Divineguma. Down came the sword of the High King on CJ and she was impeached violating due procedure. Rajapaksa government did not stop at that point. It went further by framing a controversial case for bribery against Shirani. Here was a helpless woman being seemingly harassed.

Fourthly, multiple cases are reflected in former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’ “files” story. During the elections Rajapaksa brazenly claimed that he had the files of those who jumped or would jump and suggested that he can do damage to them. This claim implied that Rajapaksa had the practice of keeping files of corrupt and wrong-doing Ministers/MPs and that he would use them (revenge) against anyone trying to leave him.

Duminda Drama

The most dramatic case of political Alzheimer’s, however, comes not from the former President himself but from one of his key government members, namely Duminda Silva, Member of Parliament. Duminda, whose name has been associated with drug trafficking allegations, was accused of murdering Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, Kolonnawa SLFP leader. In the shoot -out that took place, Duminda also suffered gun injuries and was hospitalized. He later transported himself to Singapore for treatment on the claims of brain damage and memory loss. When he returned, he was questioned in court and his response was that he cannot remember anything. Discharged from court the man laughed his way to meet the President at Temple Trees. He has now ‘recovered’ fully and was politically rehabilitated by President Rajapaksa and put in charge as the Supervising MP for Defense.

Underlying Amorality and Low Emotions

Something especially dangerous about those afflicted with political Alzheimer’s disease is that the affliction seems to be rooted in an individual psyche that is essentially amoral. Politicians who “forget” their wrong deeds do not entertain a counter guilt about having done something unethical. The emotions don’t touch their nerve. Ethical considerations don’t prick such persons for the simple reason that they are amoral or are insensitive to moral considerations. Moral issues do not occur to them at the point of the offence and associated emotions do not spring in their hearts. Such persons are called amoral persons. Being emotionally hardened, they are a sure danger to society. Serious killers and rapists are known to be low on emotions or have the capacity to switch off emotions. “Psychopaths lack empathy and possibly even the most basic understanding of human feelings,” states Paul Bablak and Robert. D Hare in a study paper entitled, “Snakes in Suites: When Psychopaths go to Work.” In similar vein, well-known pioneering writer on emotional intelligence, Daniel Goleman, states that “the heart of the psychopath’s coldness seems to lie in an inability to make anything more than the shallowest of emotional connections.”

Particularly in view of the previous consideration the question arises as to whether personalities predisposed to grave political Alzheimer’s are suitable to hold responsible leadership positions in a country. A leadership position in a country is essentially a position of public trust. Public trust entails qualities that include integrity, fairness, accountability and responsibility.

I agree with your analysis, that Mahinda Rajapaksa is suffering from Alzheimer’s desease.

However I disagree with your prognosis of Duminda. Duminda’s case is a clear case of amnesia. A great many people who were Mahinda Rajapaksa’s coterie suffer from this illness. Subject them to any form of questioning they will never remember committing fraud, commiting murder and mayhem. Gnanasara the thug monk keeps repeating that he never said anything against any Muslim or Christian and had never instigated murder or pillage.

Not only Mahinda but many coughed and further coughing for him have lost their memories. This is the most estranged nation of the South Asia.
Recalling what I happened to face during my last visit made to the country – last two weeks of November 2014, and having seen the most unexpected scenes in the country, I felt, my god, what would be the result if the BUGGER MR would govern the country even after the 8th Jan…. FOrutnatley, the bugger was defeated -but today masses behave as if we had not had such problems then.

        Hmm…

This comment is from a guy who just about a year ago, and five years after the war, gleefully declared:

“Rajapakse is a very honourable man and I am confident he will keep to his words.”

“Rajapakse has delivered at least 75% of what he promised for the Tamils.”

“It is foolish to take Rajapakse’s regime to task, even on War Crime issues. Diaspora should refrain from agitating against the regime, and instead support and fund the regime.”

I wonder who else may be inflicted wth the “Mad cow” disease – perhaps MR and NR shared some beef dishes during the all paid vacation of NR, all complements of MR!

I remember, I think it was you, Shyamon, who said that what Peradeniya University, or rather the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya, gave you was to call a spade, a spade.

So, let’s call, a spade, a spade, and not something else for “Diplomatic ” reasons.

The Spade, I am talking about is Rajapaksa lies. He was well aware of the Crooks, Robbers and Criminals, CRCs, just like the IRCs, committed by his shills and cronies.

So, please call a spade, a spade, and not a dying tree trunk.

So, please call a liar, a spade, and not an Alzheimer patient, or even a Political Alzheimer Patient.

So, please call CRCs, CRCs, and not passengers in the Rajapaksa bus.

So, please call a rapist, a rapist, and not a lover.

… The answer is Blowin’ in the Wind…

      Shyamon,
It is not MR or R Family having Alzheimer’s.. it is general public who are lucky enough to born with Alzheimer’s decease. For YahaPalanaya campaign, we were told so many horror stories about world worst corruption, crimes, Lamborghinis, bla bla.. After reading hundreds of those stories of (worst) corruption, I myself thoughts that MR & immediate family could not even live in SL if defeated. We were told Basil was the worst.. Basil left, but parliament approved 3 months paid leave for him. Ha Ha.. Do we have to enhance our Alzheimer condition and forget about all those amusing corruption, horror white van stories told us by all political analysts including Shyamon ???..
Multiple identity cards, passports are so common crime in SL for long time. But how can we compare this common fraud to container loads of gold, money smuggling, KP gold, white vans, Kudu-Duminda, Bla Bla.. Still MR, his sons and brothers are living in SL without any fear.. Who is telling lies, who is telling truth, Anyone tells any truth? It is good that we all have Alzheimer.. Forget the past, and get ready for new horror stories about YahaPalana leaders …

No, Mahinda didn’t perform any of the crimes Shyamon has accused him of.

He just got others to execute the Acts and conveniently ‘Forgot’ that he had instigated the performance of them in the first place.

The Poor man should be pitied for the onset of this deadly disease Alzheimer’s, not criticised.

Dear Mr Jayasinghe. The fact that you can write well in English shows that you have a good bacgroud in primary and secondary education in Sri Lanka. But you owe a duty to readers to emphasise facts rraher than abuse your position by resorting to meaningless, vengeful diatribe.
Please answer this. Is it legally or morally right to remand in prison any person, never mind a female, a mother of two young children, for the alleged offence of fraudulently obtaining a diplomatic passport for which even the most oppressive dictatorial country in the present world would have granted bail until the hearing in a court of law. Is it a coincidence that the Mayor of Kaduwela demanded on media that she should be arrested,i which in any western country would be called mob rule. You, Mr Jayasinghe, not the politicians, [Edited out].

Every right thinking in and out of the country would feel – questioning Wimal Buruwanse#s wife in terms of holding forged passport was a right thing. But those who support all kind of frauds and crimes – would surely be not happy the way they have been questioned. If nation s real war hero should be subject to law and order why not any others. But the good thing is all these occured in a civlized manner not at all on a revengeful manner though most abusive man of the nation Wimal buruwanse would animate the nation by telling something else.
But come ahead of us, people of this country learn them all a lesson – if not now, in the forseen future after the law amds will be made,, all these men and women will have to face it.
If that was found guilty in germany, Wimal buruwanse wife should have to be kept in Jail for several years. That is how western world work on such issues. Crime should be considered as crime regardless of the status of the person.

Mr shyamon Jayasinghe is very fine non offending gentleman.

What is wrong in his article. He has said about General Fonseka and former C.J. Sirani Bandaranayake and how they were haunted hy the former regime just because they were acting independently and did not follow irregular orders/requests.

Mrs.Sashi Weerawansa was arrested after due inquiries on all aspects with regard to false information in her diplomatic passport. What is wrong in herr arrest for the crime committed by her.
They speak about so many issues, do they not know infromation in the application for passport has to be accurate. This lady was possibly pretending to be seriously sick and posing picture with the two children, especially taken for mass media to win the sympathy of the public.

@gigurawa wijethilleke – you are total idiot, before articulating your question you should have checked out the process of the law. When someone is charged for a misdemeanor they are first arrested and put into remand prison before they can be brought before a magistrate so that bail can be posted, which if you read in other news available online is what has taken place and Mrs. Weerawanse is now out on bail. Not just the Mayor of Kaduwela but all law abiding Sri Lankan’s should demand her arrest for flagrant abuse of her husbands position if she fraudulently obtained a diplomatic passport.
She is equal before the law and the law does not consider her status of being a mother of two young children, only whether she has in anyway broken the law as alleged. Whether she is guilty or not is to be proven in courts and is the due process conducted in any civilised country in the world.

        Hi Shan
Please use diplomatic language, When a person is arrested by police he or she should be produced before a magistrate,She was [produced before colombo magistrate, who shoal have released on bail, That is what has happened in similar cases of fraud in Sri Lanka and all democratic countries. Someone is remanded only if there is a threat to the public, or probability of interference with on-going inquiries. The police spokesman has been telling govt newspapers for one month that there was evidence of fraud here.
Ravi Karunanayake is being charged with violation of money landering laws involving billions of rupees, and his co-supect has been jailed in US for same offence, Ravi should have been remanded in custody if one applies the same rules of justice.

          Dear Native.

Our Dalits have never seen inside a Palace, let alone living in them.

They wouldn’t know the Bidet from the Shower Flower..

I will be happy if your CM allows our Southern Dalits to worship at Lord Buddha’s old holiday pad in Nagadipa.

What worries me is the hardships they will face after Sambandan & Wigneswaran establish the Nation of Tamil Eelaam there.

Would it be like the poor Dalits in the Gaza strip going to Jerusalam to Worship at AlAqsa?.

Will the TNA Police body search the poor Pilgrims?.

Who will be there to protect them when Ranil removes the Army Camps?.

Our poor pilgrims won’t be able to complaint even because they wouldn’t know the Eelaam dialect. ….Right…

You never want to respond to any simple query when its raised to clarify your honest position.

How did the state raise the finances for such a large building when the Dalit are left to rot in shanties and handouts.

What was the purpose of this palace? Is it the only palace MR clan own inside and outside this island?

            Find out.

Remember Sadamed Hussein owned 13 palaces in Iraq.

What does motivate you to justify numerous crimes committed by this thieving clan?

Are you one of those hangers on.

Misplaced loyalty can and often destroy the country and people as a section of your brethren had for VP:

Our leader Mahinda Rajabaksa, we want Sinhala/Buddhist Eelam will take you nowhere.

“I will be happy if your CM allows”

            This the final insult.

              Dear Native,

I don’t need, Mahinda, neither My Three nor Ranil.

But I can”t forget the peaceful transformation and development in my Motherland since May 2009.

Elite who carry on like big heroes now, were shitting in their jock straps in 2008 , when Thavilar sent his Air Force to bomb Colombo.

I was in the old Inter Continental in pitch darkness, praying that the bombs wouldn’t hit the 7th Floor.

Mahinda probably had a premonition that Jaffna would be the Capital of Eelaam one day.

That is why he built a Palace there, for capital appreciation, without having one even in Medumulana, let alone the Elite Turf in Kurunduwatta.

Even if 1 % of the 20 Billion Pounds which the Diaspora pumps in to the UK Economy (Diaspora’s own estimates and reports in CT) is diverted to Jaffna you can make the Dalits in to Elite in two years.

But our Dalits in the South have no such luck.

The only leader who tried hard to help our Dalits was hunted down by the Elite, Anglicans , Vellalas and the Muslims, with the help of the Diaspora and their Western mates.

And a few naive Sinhala Buddhist Leaders who made a living pretending to be the saviours , guardians and even spiritual leaders of the Dalits, helped in the Hunt.

That is the ultimate insult, as far as I am concerned.

Lasanda, the fact that he instilled fear in a lot of innocent people thereafter, through extra-judicial killings, disappearances, amassed wealth that was not his, spent national wealth in satisfying his ego driven self unashamedly, … allowed his kith and kin to rob the country silly, and protected crooks and murderers, and threw the man who fought the war into jail immediately after a democratic election in a once democratic country – ah, the list is endless… so none of that is counted when you name a man “great’ right?

My take is this. If a man came forward at an election and said he would end the war and asked for your vote and he did it, he was merely doing his job as promised. He was placed there for that through public trust. No need to go on your knees forever for that.

If you have Sangakkara in the team as a batsman, and if he scores a brilliant hundred in a difficult situation, he is merely doing his job. No need to kneel. He is there for that; to score runs, getting paid for the trouble.

Same with Mahinda. He just fulfilled his promise, and in doing so, probably committed a lot of war crimes (note ‘probably’) for which the nation may now have to face a lot of difficulty.

As the recent results proved, there are a lot of ‘knaves’ in this country. Shyamon isn’t one of them; neither am I.

days ahead of us will show you how the current admdinistraiton will prove them. No doubt, with the backing of JVP, JHU and all other independent groups, all those who have grabbed funds for their own survivial – name wise they are solely Rajapakshes will have to be punished. Now or later this will be the consequence. Rajapakshes not only contriubted to eleminated terror, but they also did more harm in lanken people as no other leaders deliberately made it. That will be becomin clear to anyone in the days to come. Jaya niyathiai.

Your kind of people gathered to Medamulana – diehard blind men and women at the time most disgraceful man arrived in their. SOme just shed tears… ape president, ape rajathuma… the like were heard loudly.. his media men spread these namings for the political survivla of the man not yesterday but for the entire 10 years.. no media freedom was allowed to the most who enjoy it today. But

Lasanda why not you guys move to North Korea for the rest of life ? I truly believe, you guys will never change your attitude, would do even unbelievable things for your beloved man Mahinda. Are you ready even to allow your family ones to do all submissive acts for the single reason the relay race of war found end in his terms. This race was not born in 2005.
You please go and have a check by your nearsest psychologist – perhaps that can help others alike too.. to wake up and have a good life.

Aney Sukirihamy, Thank you. How right you are-

            “… ape president, ape rajathuma… ” Apey’ Aanduva…

How much, the concept of Self Government from Foreign Domination, changed in meaning, for the convenience of Politicians!

What is the meaning of Apey?

Aren’t Citizens Unlike ‘API’, entitled to a Good President, Good Leaders and a Good Government?

Ceylon got Freedom from Foreign Rule, to gain a Despotic Government for only One section of its Populace. This gradually evolved to become a Treasure Trove for One Family and its Sycophants, encouraged by the concept of ‘API and APEY’.

Isn’t this is going against the Dhamma of That Great Teacher, The Gautama Buddha, Who did not discriminate against anyone by virtue of their Caste, Creed, Language or Race?

Shyam, I believe was a public servant of the yester-year. I would like to know whether he could name a few Sri Lankan politicians in the recent past who did not suffer from political Alzheimers disease.

In my humble opinion Sri Lankan politicians do suffer from selective political amnesia and foreign politicians too seem to suffer from it too.

As the Sinhalese saying goes : You deserve to have gold coins dropped into your mouth. You have certainly identified a common disease which our medical fraternity has overlooked. Perhaps they have not bothered so pursue this condition as it is contagious.

Duminda’s health history as MR administration brought before the nation was beyond all morals and ethics. Let alone today, respective lawyers and medical professionals should reveal the nation whether those medical source data were trutful. Besides, as all and sundry would feel it today, it was a blatant lie by the MR administration itself to repeat it to the public at that time, that the murder alleged was medically unable to explain anything related ot the murder incident. All these were deliberately made by MR administration and made the murder alleged again the Kollonawa organizer. And not to forget Duminda was one of the few men who always appreciated president in the election campaign. Today people of this country have every right to know the truth behind HEALTH history of the alleged man. And not forgetting that he was kept away from the country – using executive powers of the president… who paid the bills at Singaporian hosptial bills etc should be made before the nation.. people have every rights to get all these.

The nation respected him even after the 8th, forgetting all the abuses he delieberately happened to do for his survival. He was like a butcher who could only kill and settle things, the rest he should hand over to the due. It was like a bad soldier was given most sophisticated weapons to manage

      a) Walura has abused higher sums for Mattala
      b) Walura has let others around him to do the same job

Mahinda in his forced retirement has managed to do great damage to our country even last week. He has given an interview to a Pakistani journalist, where he has openly stated that India is responsible for the insurgency in Sri Lanka and the Taliban in Pakistan. This is not Alzheimers, it is diplomatic lunacy. Is this how an ex-head of state behaves?

Mahinda is suffering from Duminda Syndrom.

  • 5
    3

These days, in legal circles, pleading this ‘loss’ of memory is being called the ‘Duminda defence’. This condition is usually brought on by some mind-blowing event like witnessing/participating in a murder, inflicting grievous body harm, committing fraud, losing an election, etc, etc, etc. Medical practitioners in Singapore have confirmed that there is NO cure for such a condition. Local medico’s say that this condition maybe passed on to those in close association. Expect more cases.

How can MR say that others cannot point their fingers at him. My Cousin Sunil Fermin Perera was assaulted and killed while he was in Remand prison falsely accused by the goons of Rajapakse’s regime saying he is a Sinhala Kotiya. Finally we filed a HR petition in the Supreme courts and his name was cleared as an innocent victim. Won’t Rajapakse take the responsibility for this innocent life.

All of you, including the author are wrong. There are different standards of governance and civilized behavior. MR was trying his best to emulate the Libyan standards, where any opposition to the ruler is harshly nipped in the bud. But the citizens themselves had other standards and gave their ruler the now famous Libyan treatment.

MR believes that he can have these double standards and pretend amnesia because he believes that his supporters numbering 58 lakhs can be divided in to 2 categories: (1) people who eat grass (2) Cattle who eat rice. That is why he is coming out with these cock and bull stories. Believing his own lies he conveniently forgets the 62 lakhs who voted against him, classifying them as Tamils, Muslims, Non Buddhists etc. He does not understand that it would be more convenient to classify them as people who are fed up with MR &Co.

I am starting to believe that the Libyan methods can sometimes be not only useful but indispensible. A pity that the 62 lakhs of people would not stoop to that level, whatever the provocation may be.

The driver who first told the police that he saw Dumiya kill Bharatha was later forced to deny it and the case was withdrawn , I think by Mohan who was the AG.Mara then made Bharatha’s wife a Presidential advisor and she was paid Rs 100,000.00 per month salary.

Your verbal intercourse will get you aids not financial aids. Your two cents comments will not help My3, Ranil or Mangala. Thanks for your expertise advice I think the voters will be a better judge. Surely I expected a better constructive comment from an experience person. Pretty disappointed and a waste of paper space and article. Looks like you are the victim, give the youngsters a job and please retire.

Call a liar a liar! To label such a man as MR as suffering from a very serious disease like Alzheimer’s is to only display a level of ignorance and an insensitivity to this devastating condition that destroys lives and families. MR maybe accused of being a liar, of having Poloitical Amnesia, but please don’t compare him and his misdeeds to those of the victims of Alzheimer’s. They are worlds apart!
