Mervin’s Son And Keheliya’s Kehelmal*

By Malinda Seneviratne –

Malinda Seneviratne

Malaka Silva, son of Mervin Silva, Minister of Public Relations and Public Affairs is a thug.  He is rumored to be involved in drug trafficking but rumor is not fact.  If indeed he is, there is either a lack of information to warrant investigation or there’s pressure from above to keep things quiet or the investigation is being carried out in hush-hush ways.  It is rumored that the Army officer who was assaulted by Malaka and his thugs and who is known to be attached to the Army’s Intelligence Unit, was actually on duty investigating drug trafficking and drug traffickers. Those who will connect the dots will do so, but that’s all conjecture.

What is fact and indeed caught on camera is that Malaka Silva and his gangsters assaulted this officer, causing grievous hurt and necessitating hospitalization.  Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana has acknowledged that the assault was captured on camera and said that the culprits will be apprehended.  The Army has launched its own investigation.  Two Police teams have been deployed to hunt the man down.

Meanwhile, even as the nation in one voice calls for the arrest of this thug and wonders about the logic of a soldier putting his life on line to free the nation from the menace of terrorism having to suffer the fate of being banged up a common thug, Malaka Silva calmly visits the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihare, as a VVIP, bypassing the long queues, to pay homage to the Sacred Kapilavastu Relics and this in a place where over 2,000 policemen were stationed to maintain law and order.  He is photographed, duly and the photographs are published.  Malaka is essentially lifting a metaphorical sarong at the country’s law, law enforcement officers, the judiciary and the general citizenry.

That’s serious stuff.  Here’s the flip side, and the hilarity that should not provoke laughter but does, perhaps because (for good or bad) we are a nation that can see the funny side of things even in the midst of grim sobriety.

Mervin Silva, the assailants father with a considerable scot-fee history of intimidation and assault himself, claims that his son would never hit a man in uniform.  According to him, Malaka hit someone who he believed was an ordinary person, whose crime was that although he had a cigarette he was ready to give cigarette-needing Malaka, didn’t have a lighter to go with it.  So Malaka can assault anyone he bums a cigarette from if he didn’t have a lighter as well, provided he didn’t happen to be in military uniform.  Stretch that argument and we have Malaka with a license to assault anyone other than military personnel (who too would be spared only if in uniform).  We should not take Mervin too seriously, for the man thinks the law allows anyone to tie anyone else to a tree.  We should take issue from those who do nothing about it.

Keheliya Rambukwella now holds the dubious record for besting Mervin at this kind of humor.  At the weekly media briefing on Cabinet decisions, responding to a query, he is reported to have said that the Police didn’t arrest Malaka in Kelaniya because ‘he was on sacred ground’.  Now, had Prabhakaran been spotted worshipping at theMadhuChurchand the Army had surrounded the place, would he have been accorded the same privilege?  Let’s assume so.  At some point Prabhakaran would have had to leave or starve.  Let’s assume he chose the former option.  Would not the Army have captured him there and then, or shot him dead if he attempted to fight his way out?

Malaka Silva walked away.  He would have exited ‘sacred ground’ at some point.  The Police could not have been so blind as to leave a to-safety avenue for the thug.  He could have been apprehended at the gate. He was not.  The police are not stupid.  The people are not stupid.  Keheliya seems to believe that both are stupid.

Malaka Silva is not an extraordinary citizen.  If I did what Malaka did, I would be behind bars now.  I would have been arrested within the hour of assaulting a senior Army officer.  Malaka is free, still.  That doesn’t say a lot about law enforcement in the country.  It says a lot about Malaka’s and Mervin’s political backers.  It leaves a question:  ‘Who is the President of this country, Mahinda Rajapaksa or Mervin Silva?’

*literally ‘plantain-flower’ but used colloquially to mean ‘balderdash’.

More than the frailty of the law enforcement, this talks loads about governance. If the law enforcement authorities were given a free hand without interference from powers above, they would have done their duty. But if they are intimidated for carrying out their duty without fear or favor, the structure collapses.

Mahinda PakshaRaja is the PresiDunce and Mervin is his attack dog. As long as the PakshaRajas’ rule this country there will only be the law of the jungle. Only the people of this country can get rid of such scum. Let’s hope they have the brains to vote these thugs out of power at the next presidential election and general election.

THE MORONS IN OUR COUNTRY WHO HAVE NO SENSE OF SHAME LEFT IN THEM ARE SOLELY TO BE BLAMED FOR THE MISERABLE, DEPLORABLE AND HUMILIATING PLIGHT THAT THIS COUNTRY IS GOING THROUGH. THESE DEAF, DUMB AND BLIND SCREW NUTS HAVE ELECTED CRIMINALS TO POWER AND MADE THEM SIT ON OUR HEADS. TRUE, GETTING RID OF TERRORISM IS PRAISEWORTHY BUT NOW THESE SCUM OF THE EARTH ARE TERRORIZING THE COMMON MAN BY SPREADING FEAR IN HIS HEART AND MIND. HE IS BEING EXPLOITED, SUBJUGATED AND OPPRESSED.

HAD AN ORDINARY CITIZEN ASSAULTED AN ARMY OFFICER; THE WHOLE ARMY WOULD HAVE STEPPED ON THE POOR MAN’S NECK AND CRUSHED HIM. THEY WOULD HAVE LIQUIDATED HIM ALONG WITH HIS FAMILY. THIS IS METING OUT JUSTICE THE SRI LANKAN STYLE! BUT WHEN A POLITICIAN’S SON PHYSICALLY ASSAULT AN ARMY OFFICER; NONE WILL DARE LIFT A FINGER. SO WE HAVE ONE LAW (OF THE BARBARIANS) FOR THE ORDINARY CITIZEN OR THE SUBJECT AND NONE FOR THE PRIVILEGED OR THE RULING CLASS. AND THIS CRIMINAL SON HAD THE AUDACITY TO TURN UP THE FOLLOWING DAY AT A TEMPLE AND THEN WALK AWAY SCOT-FREE FROM THE PRESENCE OF A POLICE FORCE OF OVER 1000! WHAT A SHAME!

OBVIOUSLY THERE IS NO PLACE FOR TRUTH AND JUSTICE IN THIS COUNTRY. PEOPLE IN HIGH POSITIONS WHO CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, WHO CAN BRING ABOUT SOME CHANGE ARE MERELY PAYING LIP SERVICE TO THE CAUSE.

ALL WHAT WE NEED IS A SPARK TO IGNITE A FIRE! BUT THE FOREVER QUESTION IS; WHO IS THERE THAT WILL PROVIDE THIS SPARK?

IT WAS ONE BRAVE YOUNG MAN IN TUNISIA, THAT STARTED TE REVOLUTIONS THAT BROUGHT ABOUT THE FALL OF DICTATORS IN THE ARAB COUNTRIES.
THE TROUBLE IS WE SRI LANKANS ARE NOT MADE OF THAT STUFF.

Sri Lanka has a lot of brave people.

Watching with deep anger in silence.

      Anger is about to explode.

Corrupt family clan will be gone sooner than we imagine.

“Sri Lanka has a lot of brave people”

All of them are hiding behind their women folks.

“Watching with deep anger in silence”

and beating up and killing the minorities and then blame them for all the evils in Sri Lanka.

        “Anger is about to explode.”

Beat up the Tamils and burn down their houses and businesses.

“Corrupt family clan will be gone sooner than we imagine.”

        Gone where?

The election results to three provincial councils show that they still have support of the stupid Sinhalese. As long as the people remain stupid and continues to support the tiger slayer and his extended family no way they are going to relocate.

I always thought not just the police but the entire population is stupid.

” If I did what Malaka did, I would be behind bars now”

Not in Sri Lanka. Malinda is safe as he already has provided enough service to the clan hence he would have been treated honourably.

Malinda forgot to ask an important question.

Why didn’t the police mount a coordinated dawn raid on his house, his relatives’ houses, his girl friends’ houses, president’s official residence, Gota’s house………………….?

An army major goes to a night club wearing his sidearm to investigate drug trafficking and arrest traffickers.A man rumoured to be a drug trafficker attacks him, causing contusions/abrasions – NOT amounting to grievous hurt – on his face and head. The attacker is not afraid that the major will shoot him at least to disable him.The attack has been photoed/filmed by another person conveniantly present – HE was not attacked by the alleged assailant or his friends nor his camera seized. The major loses his gun & cellphone too – later returned by someone else. The alleged assailant goes about even to a temple,
unconcerned. The army, meanwhile appears unconcerned. Two police teams search for him meanwhile.
This is better than a hollywood/bollywood serial.
We will await the next episode.

He will never be arrested. A surrender episode will be arranged, and he will surrender quietly released on bail.

Cocky Rohana Wijeweera lost his mental balance and took the army on recklessly and then saw his end rather brutally reportedly in army hands. Mujibur Rahman, the Father of Bangladesh (Bangla Bandu),
played ball with the major smuggling group – one of whom also lost his balance and slapped an army official in public. Mujibur Rahman and his family were savagely wiped out by the army for this insult.
This degenerate Mervin Silva, the Minister (what a disgusting shame?)
choses his words carefully trying to get to the better side of the army in yesterday’s Press Interview. But as Sarath Fonseka points out the lowly Vermin and his wayward son have offended the honour and integrity of the army. If the army official was on duty at the night-club on the look out for drug traffickers then tremendous harm has been done to a responsible officer. The pliant Army top brass will have to take a strong and principled stand here as the country is watching their response.

If it was a Tamil or a Muslim who assaulted the Army Officer he would have been charged as a Tamil Tiger or a Jihadist and detailed under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. Malaka happending to be a Sinhalese and being the son of a right-hand of the President everything is being done to cover-up Malaka. The final decision will be (1) The Army Officer will be found guilty of being out of his post without Army uniform when on duty, and he provoked Malaka (2) Malaka will be charged for attacking under provocation and not attacking with the intention of hurting the officer and will be made to make a small fine.

The problem is not the people in Power. The weak point is people who vote these liars and cheats into positions of power. That is the the Sri Lankan Populance.
Kapila vastu relics are not going to help the Nation. The nation is steeped in medivalism and witch craft. Personally I see no Hope for the Nation. The miracle of Asia is a Miracle for the Rajapakse’s and their kind.

Ancient Royal edicts in Sri Lanka repeat that no one who had committed a criminal act entering the sacred ground of a monastery shall be arrested by law enforcing authorities. In fact the latter are among those prohibited from entering a monastery. The law of immunity applied here is not the present law but the ancient law.For more information read Epigraphica Zeylanica or former Supreme Court Judge Ranjit Amerasinghe’s book on Ancient Law.

    Bandu de Silva:

Have you completed your book on Ancient Sri Lankan History that you set out to rewrite some years ago?

Given the dangerous situation which has been developing for some years do you still believe Tamils are Kallathonies from Tamilnadu and they should not claim a stake in my ancestral land?

If you have changed your mind regarding Tamils’ right to claim their stake in my ancestral land, why? If you haven’t why not?

Do you still believe LTTE was too dangerous than the Sri Lankan state as we know it?

      Native Vedda

The De Silvas in Sri Lanka belong to the Salagama caste. The Ceylon Moors (Muslims) such as Marikkar from Beruwela brought these people from Saliya Gramam in Kerela (South India) as weavers to the king of Kotte. Later, due to some dispute with the king, they were punished and were given the job of cinnamon peeling. They were recent immigrants to Sri Lanka from South India, but today they have become the Sinhala-Buddhist patriots (Dutugemunu descendents). Now these charlatans (Bandu De Silva and Nalin De Silva) are even trying to re-write the Sri Lankan history.

You are wrong on Silvas- Mervin is Durava cast, Colvin R De Silva is Salagama cast, Nalin De Silva is Karava cast, Sarath Silva is Govigama cast. Don’t talk what u don’t know man.

Even the Maha Sangha is divided by caste.

Others have to cover up both shoulders.

Thanks for your caste analysis however Caste doesn’t determine one’s behaviour.

Native, Caste then essentially denoted the behavioural pattern of the society. That is how caste came in to existance. However with cross breading and the genes being mixed, today it is difficult to say Caste determines one’s behaviour except that now and then it surfaces the breeding for all to see.

You always insult both Tamils and Sinhalese as “stupid people”, but the fact that the Veddas are basically extinct while the Sinhalese and Tamils prosper and multiply suggests the Native Veddas were the least adaptable no? Google Darwinism sometime.

Aren’t they? Please give me one example to prove me wrong. If you give me one I will give you 1000 examples to prove they are very very & very stupid.

Don’t you think both the Tamils and Sinhalese deserved to reminded of their intellectual/rational limitations.

With all articles on this matter & brave comments expressing the disgustof the people one question remains unanswered. This is not the first time this Dutugamunu’s son behaved in this manner. He has already made history as the most notorious of all such sons produced by similar politicians this country had to live with.
Now he is coming out with a story that the Major was the one who came to the vehicle & threatened him. Level of the IQ of the concerned major & this scum of a school dropout must be compared to believe. If the major is mad only that he would have gone to threaten this man who had 6 MSD(cannot believe them to be unarmed) + one more thug in Rehan + one driver. This junior Dutugamunu must be thinking that the people of this country is as much idiotic as himself & his father who bought a Doctorate for Politcs from a physically non existing Alternative Medicine university with the help of Dr. Geethanjana Mendis.
The greatest question remains as to why there is no inaction from a single authority in this country to keep this father & son in a dog cage or more deservingly in a pig tie until they are not anymore dangerous to the people of this country? Why dont the services of a whitevan be provided for them similar to many innocent people this country lost? Send them abroad to acountry similar to how Karuna Amman was exported?
Most of all why is the President of this country continue to protect them? Is the great king under some kind of fear or obligation to this Dutu Gamunu?

These actions of a Ministers son and the comments thereof are only
brief notes for CT Readers whilst the powerful voter on whom the
Rajapaksha Regime rests is oblivious due to the support extended by
MS and his kind. The self-censored Media and the low-lying Police
are the bane of the current society. Even a slight change in the latter
will be a relief to all Citizens.

    gamini says:

“it is difficult to say Caste determines one’s behaviour except that now and then it surfaces the breeding for all to see.”

    I beg to differ.

Caste has nothing to do with one’s own behaviour.

Howver socialisation shape one’s behaviour to a large extend.

The parents and teachers have major bearing on children’s behaviour then the community in which they live influences them.

If they live in caste concious society the children tend to learn from their environment, particularly in Tamil and Sinhala societies.

Native, for your information there is no society that evolved outside a Caste System anywhere in the world. All societies evolved under Caste. For that matter such systems are still prevelant in some animal and insect orders. Originally, societies believed that the natural ability of individuals depended on the genes of individuals, even among the Veddha communities. Hence a Chieftain and his progeny succeeded down the line. It is a shame that you are not aware of your forefathers history. It was the low castes who generally committed menial crime in society. However down the line of civilisation all this changed with the cross breeding. To emphasise, ‘Once when King Solomn on his rounds in the country inspecting the living conditions of his subjects, noticing a commoner who resembled him in features, questions, ‘Hey man was your mother in my father’s court? to which the Commoner replies, ‘No Sire, but my father was’. This is how cross breading occured. Generally societies originally elcted as Kings who were compassionate, understanding, benevolent individuals. But History reveals of absolute Tyrants as Kings. Obviously fathered by the Guards in the Palace while the Kings were sowing their oats elsewhere. The same happened to the Nobility and the Aristocracy in societies, as man could not control his carnal desire. The masses were considered the asses in society who just worked for food. But then we see the uprisings in History led by individuals, obviously genes from better stock as they no longer took things for granted and thus revolted. Native, I hope Caste is clear to you now.

Guess Gamini has NOT been to America. Yes we still have unequal distribution of wealth, but the American dream remains alive and well, and even a man from the most modest of means can become a king of industry through hard work and ingenuity (and stock options and IPOs, but I digress). Upward mobility, or downward for that matter, is unlimited.

If Sri Lanka had only been an American colony instead of a British one, and before that Dutch and Portugese of course, it would not be such a bloody mess. Even with Indian meddling. America can still help Sri Lanka but it wont happen as long as Colombo remains so cosy with Beijing and Tehran.

This bloody Ugly American does not know the history of America as well. The ones who boast of as Americans today are those subjects from the British and European Monarchs, who displaced the American Red Indians, robbing their land around a two hundred and fifty years ago. All these buggers evolved through Monarchies and that is what I said not of the current systems practised.

As for his claim that any hard working man can hit the top, we know how, many have reached the top in all systems everywhere. No wonder it is said that behind every Fortune there lies is a hidden Crime.

This is a troubling incident indeed. The perception that the well connected can commit serious crimes with impunity, whether accurate or not, is very destabilizing and injurious to public support for GOSL. GOSL must redouble its efforts to remove nepotism and protection from prosecution for the well connected. In particular, the killers in the Tangalle incident last Christmas must be publically tried and executed without further delay. These repeated remands for short periods do NOT instill confidence that they will be held to account for a murder and gang rape of foreign tourists. If GOSL wants to fill all those 5 star rooms its building in the Fort (eg the new Shangri La), it is imperative that foreign tourists do not perceive a visit to SL as presenting a serious risk to their personal security.
