President Used Tiran’s Negotiations To His Advantage, I’m Still A Prisoner In Welikada – Fonseka

By Colombo Telegraph

Former Army Chief and Common candidate at the 2010 Presidential election, Sarath Fonseka hit out at the negotiators of his release today, saying that he was yet to see a single document pertaining to his release, six months after he was freed from Welikada Prison.

Fonseka

“I still don’t know the details of my release. All I was told was to bring my bag of belongings and come outside. They didn’t tell me anything else. I think that in some ways I am still a prisoner in Welikada. The only difference is that I am outside those walls. Other than that I have not seen a single letter. In fact, when I was leaving Welikada Prison, I didn’t even sign a book saying I was leaving to go home,” the former General told the Sinhalese  Lankadeepa in an interview yesterday.

He told the newspaper that he had instructed DNA MP Tiran Alles to negotiate on the basis of four key points pertaining to his release – that he would be given full security afforded to him before his incarceration, that his civic rights would be restored, that everything he lost as a result of his incarceration would be reinstated and that he would be allowed to carry out his political activities without hindrance.

Striking out at the negotiator of his release who recently quit the General’s political movement, Fonseka said – “perhaps Tiran Alles  negotiated the best he could. But all I am saying is that I didn’t get the result I expected from these negotiations.”

Alles and DNA MP Arjuna Ranatunga recently quit the former General’s political movement, an unregistered political party called the Democratic Party. However, both Alles and Ranatunga remain members of the Democratic National Alliance, the opposition coalition forged under Fonseka’s leadership that includes the JVP and won seven seats in the 2010 parliamentary election. Alles is a National List MP of the alliance, appointed by Fonseka.

Referring to Alles and Ranatunga’s role in his release, Fonseka charged that Ranatunga had played no part in the negotiations for his release. He also said that while none of his conditions had been met, the President had made political mileage with his release. “The President used it to his advantage. He made it an opportunity to release me because at the time there was massive international pressure calling for my release. The Maha Sanga, the religious leaders in this country they were all calling for my release. The pressure from all these sections on the Government was intense. That is why they released me. So one person alone cannot claim the glory for that,” the former Army Chief said.

Fonseka added that neither Ranatunga nor Alles have a mandate from the people and only achieved their positions because of their proximity to him. “These are people who got a vote or two and then aspired to high ranking positions by being in my shadow. They became somebodies because they were close to me. People like that ultimately leave. There is nothing I can do about it. I didn’t go to them to become a somebody. The people of this country know that,” he told Lankadeepa.

Referring to Alles’ claim that he had forgotten to be grateful Fonseka said: “I didn’t go to jail for stealing or breaking into houses. I went to jail for carrying out a political campaign for my country and my people. I was imprisoned on false charges. Before that I fought to rid this country of terrorism. So even though I went to jail, the people of this country continued to be grateful. They grieved for me. They spoke for me. They cried for me. They held bodhi poojas for me. When I came out, none of them expected anything from me in return – and yet none of them say I am not grateful.”

Alles negotiated for months to get Fonseka out of prison but no details of the release were ever made public. The former Army Commander was released from Welikada on May 21, 2012.  Tiran Alles who has been a DNA MP representing Fonseka’s party for more than two years, was finally goaded into speaking after Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe took jibes at him during a parliamentary session recently. Reading a prepared speech, in his response, Alles charged that Wickremesinghe was not doing his job as leader of the opposition even though he was maintained at tax-payers expense. Wickremesinghe shot back in his reply that he was an elected member of parliament and had been for decades and added that he was even elected to the position of UNP Leader, unlike the national list DNA MP. The UNP Leader said that MPs were maintained by the people and could not get away with not speaking on the peoples’ behalf in the legislature.

The hold the executive has over various members of parliment is amazing. They are so scared to even speak a few words or question him. Only explaination seems that many are caught in various tax and criminal investigation which would be revealed if they utter one word.

Exceptions are SF and SB who have tried to break through and are being unjustly attacked as a result. The funny behaviour of former CJ who was embraced by the President and then starts singing a completely different tune? The mystery of the CSE where so many decent people were appointed and then resigned and went home uttering not a word? Mr TK said a few things but did not go the whole distance.

This reveals the politics of terror in this country. People are scared to talk for fear of their livess and reputation. It is unfortunate that the country lacks leaders of character who will stand up against this scourge.

It is a good thing that unaccountable and non-transparent individuals such as Alles and Ranatunga have left.

After all the whole idea is to build a new political culture. Alles or Ranatunga are not suitable people for such a task.

Wasn’t it Alles who helped bribe Prabhakaran on MR’s behalf so he could win the election? We all know about Arjuna’s opportunistic tendencies, although it must be said that he has more guts than most of the others who are cowed by MR. So yes, SF is probably better off without the two of them.

Wonder what the reason was for both of them to suddenly (and in unison) beat a retreat? There is so much political intrigue inspired by the siblings that one never knows…!

Alles a cheater. He has worked for t he president to save him from public criticism. While pretending tha he was working for the release of Patriot Army Commander he worked tirelessly save the skin of president from the general public who were highly criticle of the attitudes shown and the inhuman and brutual manner the he has treated The General Sarath Fonseka.

People of this country will respect SF as the great commander – nations hero forever. He is the most genuine person today in lanken politics – not like having any kind of fears to open his mouth. All the false charges and the punishments that he was given will boomerang on the rulers soon – this we will get to see before long. Our country is infected by spread by uncultured, uneducated rascals today. MR is backboneless – this is seen not once several dozens of times to the naton – he is just respected by the majority poor villlages – but this will not stay longer – people are furious the manner Mervin behaves today and backboneless president let it go – there is no rule of law. How dare a man as a minister of nation – can drive a motorcyle without wearing a helm. Is this an example for the youth of the country ? Traffic police cant react as it is being done by a man – called the mirror of the current regime is doing this. If any growing child would raise the question to his parents about the reulations in terms of driving – how helpless the parents become ? This is only in our country at this alarming stage – no leader in the country was abused the law of the country to this manner. Those who criticise CBK, UNP even at Premadasa^s govt should pay their close attention to see the grave problem that we are facing today.

THe Sacrifice the General has made to this country cant be matched by Tiran or Arjuna.Who are these people when compared to a great being like the General.Tirans shady character was exposed some time back when it was raveled how he negotiated with LTTE, not to allow voting in the areas which were under LTTE control thus paving the way for MR to win the first presidential election. He sided with MR again when his news paper was banned and his bank accounts were ceased.Though I have some respect for Arjuna his silence against his brother at the cricket board puzzle me a lot.if he is a straight forward man he should come out against those wrong doing his brother who was pampered by the sons of the king.General is the man who never mince his words for cheap publicity and political mileage. The real hero of our times.Regime tried all the methods that they could find to brake his will.Took all his medals with held his pension put him in the jail on fabricated charges. It was a shame for our judiciary for accepting the verdict given by the court marshal headed by army personals, punished by the General for various mal practices in their service in the army. Regime did all what they could to rob his dignity but in the face 0f all these never ending fierce assault by the corrupt regime, he stood straight as a valiant soldier, thus proving to the whole world that he is no match for them leave alone Prabakaran.Country needs a man of this nature to prosper not these ruling parasites who suck blood of the people this country.

For me SF shows exactly what a leader should have to get the nation and the country back on tracks. Some say he is not matured in lanken politics. But ones who are said to be matured only know to abuse the nation. WHAT IS BEING NOT ABUSED TODAY ? Name me any ministry which one could work to satisfiy the nation^s expectations. As a poor country that has to be dependent on world bank^s funds we should have better foreign diplomatic relations. What do we have today – under so called 40 year veteran politician- with that much of wisdom and foresight – only russia, china, Iran and few other countries that supoort to us.

      According to the Logat report

The Lorgat report further states that the current allocations of funds is neither optimal nor sustainable.’

”I don’t think that the financial loss incurred by Sri Lanka Cricket is due to the lack of income generated by tournaments. Main reason for this is the implementation of big scale projects which are based on visions of certain people.”

”Meanwhile, the broadcasting rights have been granted to the Carlton Sports Network at a rate as minimal as 125 million. If this procedure was accurate, SLC should have generated a large sum of money.”

I dont know why people like Arjuna, Sanath, Aravinda, Murali are silent about these issues? Those who love the game should speak up and expose these thieves.

      Lion says:

“General is the man who never mince his words for cheap publicity and political mileage.”

I hate to agree with you. He put the minorities where they belonged to and went back and made a “political deal” with Sampanthan (TNA) just before the presidential election.

Please read extracts below from his interview with Stewart Bell:

“I strongly believe that this country belongs to the Sinhalese but there are minority communities and we treat them like our people,” he says.

“We being the majority of the country, 75%, we will never give in and we have the right to protect this country.

“We are also a strong nation … They can live in this country with us. But they must not try to, under the pretext of being a minority, demand undue things.”

Army Commander Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka, in an interview with Stewart Bell of the National Post newspaper of Canada, 23 September 2008.

      http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=832374

I still believe he does not mince words but changes his mind half way through for political expediency.

Have you ever found out as to what he briefed the State Department on his last visit to USA? If not please ask Tiran or Arjuna.

SF was wrong in joining the opposition. He should have joined the government and carried out his plans. Coupe’ or whatever. Moron opposition used him, sliced him, diced him, now MR is pulverizing him, hope he’s got courage to stand all this shit.

I wish him all the best.

The word Kalwadda is less harm any words that come out of Mervin the vermin. I may have problem in finding proper words to name the average lankens – when alone seeing the manenr that behave as if they are deaf and dumb.
He is not the one who is becoming Zero – as you will get to see day by day- popularity of the rulers are not as had been before to this day, almost everyy second is very unahppy seeing the manner that MR and thugs govern the country today.

Hero swill never become Zero my friend. The person who owned the winning of the war left for USA to escape, with the help of his brother who is ruining the country to day.The valiant soldier who was injured so many time last being so deadly and his life was almost lost.He never left the country even he has the green card.We are all indebted him for peace we are enjoying to day.But the peace he has achieved is slowly and surely is being taken away from us by this family rule.

Our nation dont have the REPAY charactor- although most of them are buddhists. Kalagunasalakeema has been loosing in their voccabulary today. SF is a valuable person than any others in politics today. Just because he may have used inapparopriate words means not that he is incapable of handling lanken politics. When looking at the manner that so called well experienced handle it – if SF was given the chance, he would have made a displined nation by now. What we need is social democratc governance that should meet with lanken styles. More or less the system that Mahatheermohammed of Malaysia practised could be a match with lankens. Until the nation should be made civilized, we need sorta of a leader who can teach the discipline to the nation. If there is no disipline, nothing can go right – which is what w e have been experiencing today. MR behaves deaf- even if Mervin keep continuning his way of politics that would even not fit to Congo- of Africa. He ties public servants to the trees, he collects funds arbitorily from kelaniya people – he behaves as if he is running a small govt under his own norms and principles. Other minister incl. the oral patient Rajitha seems to be as if he does see or hear what the Mervin is carrying out.

Merwin the Vermin is controlling MaRa, as he has some secrets about MaRa that the people do not know.
He therefore uses MaRa as a puppet (on a string!!!)

I cannot beleive that a top army man did not know the procedure of how to get properly released from prosons. He says he did not even sign a exit register…unbelievable!!

I can remember SF said one day “To distroy ruthless LTTE You have to be ruthless”. Because of his this nature SL army distroyed LTTE as he was a commander. By reading this article I can not see that he could be a good political leader to Sri Lanka.

For whatever its worth I could not imagine such brilliant war strategists fell prey to Mangala Samaraweera & Anura Kumar dassanayake’s ploys to use SF to get even with the President.

Moreover, who is the General who will betray a Country with exposing military secrets instead of fading away with secrets to the grave as brave as he was.

On the other hand, was it SF’s greed that blinded him into the position he is in today………..
That white flag fiasco was highly unnecessary… Was SF that naive ??

The white flag story is real, and there are many witnesses who at the present moment are unable to come out in public.
Definitely they will come out at the appropriate time.
However I can understand your view that SF should not have exposed the story, belonging to the majority community.

A fact General: Arjuna was famous and respected and loved by the entire nation long before the nation heard your name. He broke into politics via his family in Gampaha and became an MP via the SLFP thanks to Chandrika. So you can slam him as much as you want but he is a man of principle. We think so were you, but the way you run your mouth off does not augur well for your political future. Everyone who disagrees with you is a Kalawadda or someone you want to insult. We don’t like what the PResident and his brothers did to you, but your falling out with them was over them stopping you and your family from making massive commissions with that Beijing deal when the war was ending. You got mad because after letting your son in law earn massive commissions and enriching yourself because you set a different set of standards for you(thinking you are owed so much) and others in the army, you fell out because they refused to let you sign a deal with your son in law’s company as the go-between. We aren’t sure if you will be committed to democracy or a military dictatorship if you had won. What if you decided to do away with everyone you disliked the way you were campaigning? We wish you luck, but the more you keep attacking people around you more people you will lose and you will never be able to defeat the President or even your one time nemesis Ranil Wickremesinghe, whom you hated so much when he was PM.. Good luck.

All Fabrications, SF is the most capable and Honest leader Sri Lankan Army ever had, his first task was to get rid off corruption and corrupt officers from the Army. that’s the main reason Sri lanak won the war against tigers. president and Gota were just specteters and latter was involving in all Arms procurement deals.

Arjuna got more than a “vote or two” LONG BEFORE the nation heard of Sarath Fonseka(2007). Arjuna was a household name since 1994 General and WON ELECTIONS LONG BEFORE he sided with you.

Even before him being with SF, Arjuna was not popular in the ruling party, for sure, he was known to the nation as a great cricketer. Please check the recenty history and straight to the facts please. You seem to drawing a totally different picture – from the reality.

I have to say about Arjuna and Tiran. Arjuna I have respect for him how he stood for SF during the past, but I do not know current situation with him And SF. But agree SF should not forget the people who were behind him honestly. But if they were supporting for political selfish gains like Tiran it is ok to forget him and get rid of him for the country. Country is more important than double head sneak like Tiran. Country is more important than paying gratitude for double head snakes. As SF said IT is not Just Tiran and Arjuna saved him. Thousands of People Who signs the white House petition also put lots of time for SF released. Mara Jara Yaka was pressured by International community and what Tiran did was Negotiating release of benefit of Jara.

    1. Tiran Alles must have done his best to deal with the situation & took him out from Jail- Need some appreciation from SF ( His nature)
    2. Fonseka is out from jail, may be with some limited activities..Not fair to him either…
    3. President gained lot of points with his release (Give less & take MORE policy) , But using people’s power inappropriately, can not be accepted. Very unfair to the people who lifted him (President)up to current position…. At least he must start thinking NOW…

    You are right.

MR is unpredictable sort of a man. I also believe that Give less and take more policy was what he applied in release of SF. To that time, entire world was putting pressure on him – SF was just released to show the world that he even resecpts IC^s opinion. Anyway, months ahead of us will be not nice in this country – majority of the people are now left to be in BEESCHANYA. No peace at all.

We all know what has been going on in Pakistan since army took control of the country. Sarath Fonseka is a former commander and General of the Sri Lanka Army. He is not a politician. The country needs wise politician who can steer the country far better than President Mahinda Rajapaksa or Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. We do not want Sri lanka end up as Libya. Now Libya is under civil war, the West is not talking about the Libyan civil war, because they are too busy pumping millions of barrels of oil in Libya(1.36 million barrels a day). The Westerners have achived what they wanted, but the Libyans are worse off. We need good leaders, but not the puppet of India or the West.

The LTTE flags and posters surfacing in Jaffna, Vavuniya and Trincomalee. Seems like we are revisiting the 1970’s and 1980’s. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat. Can history repeat itself? Yes history does repeat itself, sadly it already has.

Antany peter, you are comparing Fonseka becoming president to how Musharaff took over Pakistan. There is a huge difference here. Musharaff took over due to a coup, whereas Fonseka retires from the army and contested the election. Why should an ex-army person not hold another job, just like anyone else. After retiring has he got to do nothing?Even Gota retired and went to the US and did menial type of jobs.If he was like a frog in the well in Srilanka,he would not have got that international experience and seen how an advanced country works. It would have helped him immensely when he took over the job of Defence Secretary.Same way for Fonseka also taking a plunge into politics would be a good experience instead of twiddling his thumbs in the army after the war is over. The country could benefit immensely if he becomes president or go downhill, until you give a job to a person you can never say how they will perform, and that is why in the private sector there is a probationary period and you are kicked out if after the probation you are found to be wanting in performance. So changing jobs is also risky in commercial sector and some people just stay put in one place while the bolder ones take the risk and move.

Many unkind things can be said about Fonseka and probably he deserves it,but nobody can say he is a timid coward who does not produce results. So if he is given the job of president those attributes courage, boldness and getting results will benefit the country while his faults will affect it adversely.Only by giving the job you will know whether there is a net gain or loss to the country and whether he will do a better job than MR.

If allowed LTTE will raise its head, but on whom can we count to never let terrorists raise their heads other than President Mahinda Rajapakse and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa……

Can some one think of any one else ?

When I say history is repeating itself, I am not taking any side, both sides have not learned anything from the past. Decades have passed, thousands of innocent people have died and injured, billions of dollars wasted on purchasing weapons, but we have not learned anything yet. Still hatred is well and truly ruling both sides. I am glad I am not living in Sri Lanka, but the people who live there are the most unfortunate people.

you may be representing the Kalavadda community in the country to get hurt in this way. How many of the ruling guys use abusive langauge which are far from the word – Kalvadda. Just because the wording SF may have used – you cant judge him for his performance, he is the great lanken who has sacrificed his life for leberating country from LtterS. This credit was taken from him by the rulers because the rulers are just killing minded ones as it is getting clearer to the rest that did not realize it at the beginning. SF is the great hero to the nation that respect disipline and rule of law in the country. All other will sink soon or later. All the clown behaviour cant live last as history of ours and others have clearly shown in and out of the countries.

Arjuna didn’t become somebody because of Fonseka. Why blame Alles if you
knew that there was enormous international pressure for your release?
Why come out without knowing conditions of release if you are so sure
that outside pressure would anyhow get you out?Don’t you know about MR?
Did you expect MR to let you out so that you can become a challenge to
him? These are kinder garden talks Mr Fonseka.Fonseka got released by MR
and that alone will work for MR.MR brothers don’t waste their time on you
for the moment and that also is a plus for them. They will open their big
mouths at the right time. For the moment, you are ignored in politics of
Srilanka. You wanted to come out at any price and you got it.

SF was very popular at the time. Many thought he will be the next president and hangers-on lost no time trying to befriend him. So, Tiran climbed his back for popularity. Arjuna climbed Tirans back for the same reason.Mangala then climbed Arjunas back and Ravi K got on top of Mangala. Unfortunately the pyramid got too heavy at the top and they all came crashing down like Humpty Dumptys wall.Poor SF suffered the most because he was not fat and plump like all those who climbed his back. Now, lean and hungry, he is left to suffer alone.

    • 0
      0

paisa, that was hilarious and you are spot on.I think pyramid went down when sampanthan some more climbed on after those that you mentioned. Ranil climbed on top of Ravi K and then sampanthan climbed on top of Ranil. That was the last straw that broke the camels back,in this case Fonseka’s back. The secret deal with Sampanthan would have been bugging the sinhalese and for every tamil vote that Fonseka got he must have lost 10 sinhala votes.that was his fist big mistake and the second big mistake was shooting his mouth off about the white flag surrender. As usual Mahinda made no mistakes and ran a smooth campaign so there were no mistakes made by him for Fonseka to capitalise on.he seems to have still not learnt from his mistakes and shooting his mouth off and alienating friends like Alles and Arjuna. Fonseka will do well in politics if he can put some ducted tape over his mouth and only remove it when eating and sleeping. When he wants to communicate he should scribble something on a note pad.If he follows this for two years he will learn to control what spews out of his mouth.
