The next commonwealth meeting will be a disaster only if that is held in Hambantota, Sri Lanka.
There could be a few countries not turning up and the Duke of Edinburgh at 91 would not want to even travel. Prince Charles might only turn up with Camelia, if it is held in Hambantota. The biggest question is “IF”…
Hope Rajapakses will have a good opportunity to answer the questions from the Pope, especially regarding missing Catholic priest, killed ones and the safety of the Bishop of Mannar. The War Crimes issues will linger on and will not go away as Senator Casey said in the Senate hearings for the US Ambassador to Sri Lanka. He called for an independent, international hearing/investigations.

Quite right! If and when a Commonwealth conference takes place in Lanka in the context of CURRENT and on-going human rights violations and gross corruption under the growing Rajapakse military dictatorship it would indeed be a case of Bread and Circuses worthy of the contempt of the world – a disaster!
By the time and IF the Commonwealth Heads meet takes place in Lanka in 2013 there will be Sri Lankans on the streets of Colombo too protesting against the Rajapakse regime and the Commonwealth show including British support for a war criminal. The problem for Rajapakse is not just the past and war crimes accusations. It is the present of Human rights violations and disappeances, corrupt crony capitalism of unbelievable proportions and spin amidst Sports Business, military business and car racing extravaganzas for the Rajapakse sons who are looting Lanka.
The country is being looted and turned into a military dictatorship by Rajapakse and his family of goons and playboys with help from China and the Commonwealth it seems. Corruption has never been so bad in the history of post colonial Sri Lanka and institutions are being de-developed and destroyed, while the country is sinking into a debt trap.

Who told you that west is blaming SL for war crimes because of killing Praba and LTTE? poor Sri Lanka is facing war crimes because of killing 40000+ Tamil civilians (including women + children + elders in safe zoon declared by SL by heavy weapons) within a day and more than 100000+ disappeared and for extra judiciary killings and disappearance in capital Colombo. Also for attacking hospitals and justified it was a legitimate target. Politicians can fool the people like you by telling SL is facing war crime charges because of defeating LTTE. At the last Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, a proposal by the Commonweath Secretariat for the appointment/election of a Commonwealth Human Rights Commissioner was defeated by a majority of member nations.
This majority, which does not like monitoring of Human Rights, will be present at the 2013 meeting too, in Sri Lanka.They will dominate the discussions/proceedings.
Hence, there will NOT be a ‘disaster’,unless there is a radical change of attitude towards Human Rights.
The siting of the meeting at Hambantota – far from anywhere & with no proper places for the Queen and delegates to stay – may be disastrous.
The meeting will increase our indebtedness due to the vast expenses required.
But MR’s megalomania will prevail.
