Salley, A Courageous Voice Against The Majoritarian Racist Elements

By Mangala Samaraweera –

Mangala Samaraweera MP

We were gravely disturbed to learn of the arrest of former Deputy mayor of Colombo and Muslim Tamil National Alliance leader Azath Salley by the CID on May 2nd 2013.

This is yet another blatant manifestation of the depths to which the rule of law has sunk in this country and further proof that even as the Government prepares to host the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo in a few months, it is simultaneously taking steps to suppress dissent and victimise political opponents in a manner that runs directly contrary to the fundamental tenets of democracy.

Mr. Salley has been arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, a draconian piece of legislation whose provisions to detain suspects without trial for 180 days, and has no place in a country that is no longer fighting terrorism. Mr. Salley’s purported to be the incitement of communal hatred, for a newspaper interview in which he warned of the dire consequences of fanning the flames of ethnic and religious hatred.

It is strange that the PTA provisions permitting law enforcement to take into custody those who threaten strife between communities were never used to arrest the thugs who attacked a Muslim owned enterprise in Pepiliyana in March. Or that they were not used to arrest those extremist elements that forced the police to disperse a peaceful anti-hate vigil in April. It is baffling that these provisions are not being used to take action against the devastating reports of assaults on Muslim places of worship and women wearing the Muslim headdress.

There is no rationale in the authorities continuing to permit rallies filled with hate speech against the Muslim community and their way of life to take place in every major town in this country. Mr. Salley’s arrest, ironically called for repeatedly by hate groups afforded significant state patronage, makes it clear that the Government deals its justice by two yardsticks, one for the majority community, which can spout invective against other religions and ethnic groups freely and another for minorities who dare to issue warnings about the dangerous turn Sri Lanka is taking. His arrest is another clear indication of where the regime truly stands when it comes to ending racism and hatred.

Mr. Salley, has in these recently troubled times, been a courageous voice against the majoritarian racist elements that are threatening the re-emergence of ethnic and religious conflict in our country. If it is the regime’s answer to arrest Mr. Salley for warning against the dangers of this hate campaign, then perhaps each of us who also denounce the extremist campaigns of hate against Sri Lanka’s Muslim community must all be arrested for believing in a pluralistic society in which every Sri Lankan, irrespective of race, religion or caste, must be treated as equal citizens. If opposing hate is a crime, then we are all criminals today.

Last week, following the end of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group meeting in London, Commonwealth Secretary General told reporters there that Sri Lanka’s rule of law situation and its judicial reform would be taking a turn for the better within a matter of weeks, instead of months. He told journalists that he had received assurances of these changes by the highest echelons of the ruling Government in Colombo. It is deeply ironic that those remarks came on the same day that Sri Lanka witnessed the tragi-comic drama of the miraculous recovery of a murder suspect and Government Parliamentarian, who was supposedly so sick he could not attend court after spending over an year overseas receiving treatment, march out of hospital and straight to the Presidential Palace to be ‘blessed’, apparently in the pink of health.

The Secretary General’s words seem more ironic still, in light of the fate that has befallen Mr. Salley.

The Government has shown its true face towards the minorities and its commitment to ending hate and strife in this country.

This is the justice Sri Lanka’s ruling regime knows.

This is the democracy and reconciliation that the next CHOGM host seeks to showcase before the world come November.

We do indeed live in a land like no other.

All these head of states meetings are just thamasas at the expense of ordinary citizens of the countries they represent. They just wine dine and talk shop. Nothing worthwhile happens. IF anything positive was to happen.. the CHOGM should be moved out of SL and the current regime taken to task.. A travel ban slapped, Assets frozen and the UN Army be sent to monitor the situation. The ruling elite is simply making false promises to the people concerned… The Ruling elite is getting richer while they rape the riches of this country and send it down a slippery slope never to recover. WE would have been better off, had we still been ruled by the British… ugh.. So much for the sacrifices of our fore fathers…

      @Fair N Square
I agree 200% with you. The rich are getting richer…the poor getting poorer…and the dumb are getting dumber. A good example of the dumb getting dumber was the vast crowds that were brought to welcome Dumindas release from the Nawaloka Devale and the thousands who sold their souls and assholes on May day for a bath packet and alcohol. People will do anything for money. Thankfully SL has no oil money. If it had oil, MR and family would have spread some of it around and managed to stay in power for around 84 years…42 years longer than Gaddafi lasted. :) At the moment, it’s the very rich and the very poor who seem to be happy with MRs family government. It would have been ideal if the British had never left. If not for Hitler and WW2, they might have still been around. What any successful country needs is the rule of law and good management. We had both under the British. Unfortunately they left in 1948 and that’s when the shit hit the fan…

It is better to use Terrorism Prevention rther than fight Terrorism.

Mr Samaraweera who always look up to his foreign mates to help him topple the Govt, should know that there were 800 killed in Iraq last month alone ,resulting from clashes between the minority Sunnis and the Govt forces.

Obviously Mr Samaraweera couldn’t careless as long his mission is completed.

Perhaps K.A Sumanasekera believes that these countries should be ruled by capable clan and its chief

        “Vishawakeerthi Sri Threesinhaladishwara”.

He must be thinking in terms of a Sinhala/Buddhist empire stretching beyond Afghanistan, much larger territory than Emperor Asoka ever could imagine.

This is one occasion where I may reluctantly agree with you, an exception.

Why couldn’t the Sri Lankan state stop Sinhala/Buddhist terrorism festering the whole of the country in 1971 and between 1987 and 1990?

My elders remember Tony Blair saying “Be tough on terrorism and the causes of terrorism”.

I got few questions for you:

Now tell us what were/are the causes of terrorism in this country for people to take up arms, who are ready to kill and be killed?

How would you stop state committing terrorism through out the entire island?

Was/is terrorism tainted by race, religion, region, class, gender, sexual preferences………………..?

Please feel free to educate me, bear in mind I am bit thick.

“Obviously Mr Samaraweera couldn’t careless as long his mission is completed.”

      What is his mission?

Terrorism has been created by the racists or rather nationalistic politicians due to Hatred, Jealousy and Vengeance. This was what Ronald Reagan, Maggie Thatcher, SWRD Bandaranayaka, Indira Gandhi did in the past. Indira made valuable contrubution to creat RSS in India and LTTE IN Sri Lanka. SWRD’s party everytime came power made Sri Lanka a begging nation with racial tension across the island. Indian terrorists RSS/BJP though a political party now started their campaigne with same frame of mind made an other wing in the name of Shiv Sena. Racists Tilak Karunaratne, Gunadasa Amarasekera, nalin de Silva, Champika, Gammanpila, SL Gunasekera etc copied their Indian cousin BJP and made a Hela Urumayam then made a hate wing called Weerawidhana which was failed in sipte of the financial support of some buz guys – Pawn brokers, Biscuit & Shoe makers, etc. Now an uncultured uneducated family in power with the same mind set these germs again bounced back this time with a few different groups gota as their CEO. After the defeat of LTTE every person hope for a better violence free Ceylon but one family had other ideas, creating Terrorism again. Bal Thackery (now dead), his nephew Raj Thackery, Narendra Modi & Gotabaya, Champika, Rathana and thier boss MR are the ones terrorising. Thos who Live by Sword die by Sword!

          Angammana Sumana,

You are right on spot and I am happy that there are at least some right thinking people like you who see where the country heading.

Yes,ever since we got Independence the whole Governing of country was politicised rather than developping.

Rajapakses took it to the Climax with a family dictatorship taking over top VVIP positions, taking incharge 95% of Budget and economy while installing over 600 family members to all the top government, economic, political and administrative positions.

How can one develop a country when 95% of cabinet ministers who do not have a University degree.80% do not have GCE Advance Level and 90% are not fluent in Inglish Language or English Literate while all their secretaries and advisers are political recruits.

Just do some research to find if Rajapakses had a single Conference with the University Professional body, Economists, Engineers, consultants,Preofeeional enterpreneurs,Foreign consultants or Administrators to direct the country in proper direction..Infact He is spending 90% of time visiting Pansalas “Temples” meeting buddhist clergy, meeting villegers and hugging small children.

Rajapakses introduced a bogus Mahinda Chinthana to mislead the 80% Villege uneducated population with a 100% political agenda and not for the development of the country.

I am afraid who direct and advise Rajapakses on this sinister Political and economic path and if ther’s any foreign hand involved in this.

IT IS TIME THAT ALL THE COUNTRY LOVING PATRIOTS AND THE OPPOSITION PARTIES SHOULD GET TOGTETHER TO FIND WHO ARE ADVISING RAJAPAKSES ON THIS SINISTER AND DISTRUCTIVE PATH AND ALSO TO CHECK IF ANY FOREIGN HAND INVOLVED.

IT IS THE DUTY OF ALL SRI LANKANS TO TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY FROM ABSOLUTE UNEDUCATED, MISDIRECTING DICTATORIAL and AUTHOTATORIAL REGIME.

WHAT HAPPENED TO AZATH SALLEY TODAY COULD HAPPEN TO YOU TOMORROW.

Some addition to education and leadership in SL …
In 1970s and 80s, most of the people got into Law College were struggled to pass GCE/OL, most of them just manage to get 5-3 (3 credits plus 2 passes) in their third attempt
So I guess that more 60-70% of senior lawyers and judges who are in their 50s and 60s now were struggled in year 10 exams.
Army, Navy, AirForce offices in their 50s are the same (struggled at year 10 exams) now most of these officers are diplomats and heads of Gov institutions.
This is from my own observations when I was studying

But the sad side is, our mathematically and logically excellence students who became Engineers couldn’t build roads in SL or even build/run coal power generating plant. I am one of these :-)

Anura you are so Right! Our new style Politicians think that they are so clever, they can build Roads, Power stations, Airports and Harbours without the Training and Expertise of Engineers. That is why after a free Education in Sri Lanka, they are leaving for jobs Overseas. Most of them are Patriots who wanted to make a difference in their Motherland, but Politicians prevented them, because of their own Egos and Priorities!

Jayantha, Thank you. I am so pleased to see that lately that many educated right minded peace loving decent people opening their eyes and see where these despots taking the country. I have many friends having the same idea as you have suggested. It time for all we peace loving patriotic people to get together with a strong united opposition (irrespective of colours and personal agendas) to unveil the mask of this stupidly arrogant uncultured & uneducated (the only time I agreed with CBK) family and show the whole country what are they really. Then we dig the profiles of their sidekicks who advise and support them day and night. this is enough. the country is falling apart. Let us save the country for our children where there is no white vans fear, abductions, rapes, murderers, full freedom for journalists, solid education in any prefered language, Save historical buildings and wild life and rain forests, value other cultures, drug free society, ophanage for needy, so on and so forth. What iam basically saying is a ‘Sundara Srilankawak during late Mr. Dudley Senanayaka’s era.

So now after cremating his body, Lord Buddha still left his body parts in over half dozen countries……

Cant trust this Mangala man. He is playing politicks again. This time he has shown sudden love for Asath Sally and he is trying to use the muslims back to climb over MRs head. Our muslims must be aware of this selfish trick of his and not take his words of support for Azath Sally who is himself playing dirty politics seriously. The muslims never had any true leaders but plenty of ‘dealers’. Sally is one of them – a wheeler-dealer, using the community only for his own selfish ends.

Definitely, the muslims of this country(Sri Lanka) know who are racist and who are not. Mangala Samaraweera was never a racist. Even though I dont like his politics, I must admit and say it loud and clear – He was never a racist or supported any religion. I assume he is a free thinker.

Although terrorism was defeated and state of emergency withdrawn, PTA is still retained by the govt to harrass the political opposition. Mainly this is directed against the minorities. The Police service is kept under the Ministry of Defence and used by the regime to harras ordinary people.

One of the LLRC reccomendations is

Appoint an independent advisory committee to monitor and examine detention and arrest of persons under any regulations made under the Public Security Ordinance or the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

    One of the observations is

An independent and permanent Police Commission is a pre-requisite to guarantee the effective functioning of the Police service.

Govt has once again been given time to implement the LLRC proposals but instead we observe a heightening of undemocratic activity.

Where is the Rajapakse supporter Ranil? Why has Ranil not made any statement? Why is he not protesting against this illegal act? I think its time for Ranil to leave UNP and allow the party to get stronger. We do not have an oposition only because of Ranil being a supporter of Rajapakse.

I take my hat off to Mangala who is consistent in his criticism of injustices that are happening under the Rajapaksa regime. While the so called elected leaders of the Muslim community are deafeningly silent many in the Sinhala and Tamil communities are coming to the defence of the Muslims. This is a very welcome development.

How ridiculous a claim it is that Mr Salley was arrested for stirring up ethnic tension while the yellow robed thugs, supported by Gota are roaming free and destroying communal harmony. No one has any doubt whatsoever now about the dictatorial nature of this regime.

Both the BBS and Azad Sally are the product of Tamil diaspora. It is a clear requirements for Diaspora to create a hating and clashes among communities. So that the diaspora will turn Muslim towards the Tamil which is the mandatory requirements for their Eeelam dream and merger of north and East provinces.

The present situation is very dangerous, each and every citizen of Sri Lanka should be educated about the situation.
Presently diaspora put the the Silk Saree in the thorn. Either way the Silk Saree will get damaged.
There are well paid people everywhere to manipulate news and comments. Please evaluate the situation act wisely.

Another nincompoop blaming the Tamil diaspora for the Rajapaksa orchestrated anti Muslim troubles. He is either a Rajapaksa arselicking Muslim or a Sinhala racist hiding behind a Muslim name. They can’t blame the LTTE anymore so a convenient scapegoat is the Tamil diaspora for these brain dead racists.

Sinhala Buddhist Racism and Monk Mahanama

    1. A fraction of Sinhalese Buddhists now are racists. They were NOT racists to begin with. They were TAUGHT by Monk Mahanama to be racists with MYTHS written to Mahawamsa. This was perpetuated later on by other monks and other racists. In fact, DNA analysis of the the so-called Sinhalese will dhow that they are not much different genetically from the Tamils of South India and Sri Lanka.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinhalese_people

    2. Sri Lanka was originally Animist, Hindu and Jain. Even Vijaya and the other immigrants were either Jain or Hindu. Even Lord Buddhas parents were Hindu.

    3. Monk Mahanama and other monks used the kings, and the kings used the monks, to reinforce each others position and hegemony.

    4. Buddhism and racism became rallying points for the monks and kings. This monk-king axis has nothing to do with achieving Nirvana and rebirth, which are all MYTHS.

Studies looking at the origin of the Sinhalese have been contradictory. Older studies suggest a predominantly Sri Lankan Tamil contribution followed by a significant Bengali contribution with no North Western Indian contribution,[42][43] while more modern studies point towards a predominantly Bengali contribution and a minor Tamil and North Western Indian (Gujarati & Punjabi) contribution.[44][45][46] Multiple studies have found no significant genetic difference between the Sinhalese and the three other major ethnic groups in Sri Lanka (Sri Lankan Tamil, Indian Tamil and Sri Lankan Moor).[43][47][48][49][50][51]

It is debatable whether the Sri Lankan population have genetic links to Far East Asian populations however due to their close links to North East India, there is a likelihood of some traces of East Asian genes.[52]

You have conveniently ignored my people’s existence in this island at least for a period of not less than 30,000 years.

    Native Vedda,

Agree. If Veddahs were the First to arrive in Lanka, like the Australian Aborigines and the Native America Indians, After they left East Africa about 70,000 years ago, Yes, the Veddahs are the Original Natives.

Everybody else is an Illegal, Kallathonis.

That includes the Subsequent Migration of Dravidian (Tamil) Hindus and Dravidian Tamil Janins from South India.

That includes the Kalinga-Orissa-Bengali who were Hindus and Jains.

    Later Dravidian Tamils.
    Later Malayalees.

    Later Buddhists.
    Later Muslims
    Later Portuguese
    Later Dutch
    Later Malays
    Later English
    Later Tamils.

All these arrivals have one thing in common. Myths.

However, one good thing happened. The genes became diversified, and created a more healthy population, instead of too many birth defects due to inbreeding.

Myths of Rebirth, Nirvana, Heaven, Hell, Purgatory etc.

The monks, priests and mullahs exploited the people, in order for them to stay in power and have hegemony over the people.

In Sri Lanka, Monk Mahanama with hus myths tat are being believed by many is the cause of the problem.

It is really sad, that Lanka dis not stay Native Veddah all these years.

Religion is the Opium of the masses-Karl Marx. How true today. Budu Bala Sena and the Modayas.

Even the diversification of gene couldn’t help the 20 Million inhabitant who still remain irredeemably stupid and they are growing stupider by the second.

What is the purpose of not having many birth defects when they are brain dead at birth?

Native vedda never migrated to Hela. He was whisked along the tectonic compulsion of the land mass. You Vedda the indomitable Native Veddha survived away with the land mass which split away some 1 billion 235 years ago due to the massive shift in the austral-asia plate towards the Pangea of Indian Ocean. Thus to you only Native Veddha, the glorious offspring of the 1 billion year old survivors is due all sovereignty of this stupid Lanka. Hail Native! Hail Vedda! Hail the Hela Karumaya!
