US House of Representatives Resolution Urges GSL, IC And UN To Establish A Mechanism To Look Into War Crimes

By Colombo Telegraph

The US House of Representatives urges the Government of Sri Lanka, the  international community, and the United Nations to establish an independent international accountability mechanism to look into reports of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other human rights violations committed by both sides during and after the war in Sri Lanka and to make recommendations regarding accountability.

Do we need always an international pressure?

    1. Implementaion of LLRC recommendation
    2. credible allegations of war crimes of both side
    3. independant international inquirry against HR violations
    4. media freedom, access to detainees and war effected people
    5. demilitarization throughout the country
    6. political settlement on the meaningful devolution of power

      Vasu

      Good to hear from you.

Have you had time to look up those research papers on Genetics?

Exactly yes, Vasu. This MR govt. shall never ever under no circumstances whatsoever would address any of those issues in any meaningful and reasonable way. It is under another government or under strict international intervention that such a mechanism would be set up and operated until achieving its mission. I do not know what this UN, IC, UNHRC etc. are doing without taking any meaningful initiative. They must be concerned about China factor and power politics. The surest and lowest cost measure to solve all these problems is to hold the elections in the country all at once under the strict supervision by an international body. It will reflect true opinion of the people and cause overthrowing of this despotic regime. Alternatively they could enforce implementation of LLRC recommendations and war crime trials. Either way will cause this government to be replaced by a democratic government.

This is not news at all here in the US. Sadly nothing about Sri Lanka is really news here.

Reading reading it makes my blood boil, so I looked up the sponsor of the absurd resolution and discovered that Rep Grimm, Republican of New York, in under investigation by the House Ethics committee for recently having accepted cash bribes on the streets of DC! Right under the FBI building no less.

The Ugly American seems disturbed on a mere piece of a news item, about the House of Representative of the US for a Resolution on investigation for War Crimes here and for the UN to work out some mechanism for same. I begin to wonder whether this Bloody Ugly American has invested with the Rajapaksas to be this worried, in case they are unseated. This chap Grimm has denied and has stated whether he will accept monies under the FBI building itself, for Party Funds, knowing there is surveilance. Undoubtedly it is preposterous to think so, as this Ugly American in trying to defend his business partners the Rajapaksas.

First this freshman house member has no background in foreign policy in general, or Sri Lanka in particular. And it appears his indictment by the grand jury is imminent which will, I presume, cause him to focus on staying out of prison and winning reelection.

Second, if Congress wants to get involved in South Asian democracy building it should focus on condemning the February 7 coup in the Maldives, which it has implicitly endorsed by recognizing the Waheed government, rather than constantly hassling GOSL.

Third, the investigation part is not the part I so strongly oppose; rather, it is the call to “demilitarize the country”. This is folly. SL must remain ever vigilant as you and your fellow cadres are merely using this strategic pause to regroup before launching Ealam War V. The camps and high security zones in the North and East will have to be permanent as you sons of Shiva will never stop using violence and intimidation to try to get your Ealam.

I am deeply disturbed by the consequences faced by the regime. All the Ambassadors, political appointees and the family has nowhere to abscond but facing the reality. LTTE in captivity in Sri Lanka has a role to play answering on canon fodder of snubbing out the lives of many inc children (not child soldiers).
A political solution promised in time would have saved all these a bleak future but prolonging the matter aggravated the reconciliation process.
A non-executable parliament, oppressive state machinery, police brutality, culture of impunity, politicised judiciary, economical disaster and rife corruption all necessities Tamils and Sinhalese anew order but must be by both powers. What are the people going to do is the question.
We will loose the sovereignty without our deliberation!

Definitely it is their responsibility. When the Libyans, now the Syrians are fighting oppressors, US gave arms to them. But when Pirapaharan fought the oppressors using his own fudns collected from the oppressed Tamils who fleed teh coununtry and dispersed all over the world, US gave arms, ammunition and other millitary aids to the oppressor. Then he opprssed the Tamisl now the family is oppressing the whole Sri Lanka. US should supply arms Like Indra Gandhi did then, arms which they helped to destroy and they should have given and release the Tamils from oppression and thereby correct their mistake
