Colombo Fort Magistrate today ordered for the immediate freezing of 16 bank accountants in local banks that belong to Sri Lanka’s former ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga.

The order was issued after the FCID requested Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne to issue the order. The FCID is currently investigating a financial fraud case against Weeratunga, who is currently hiding overseas. Weeratunga is the first cousin of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
An arrest warrant has also been issued through Interpol for the arrest of Weeratunga.
Weeratunga is alleged to have committed financial fraud during the purchase of several MiG Aircrafts for the Air Force during Rajapaksa’s term as President. Reports say he is residing in Ukraine.
However during Rajapaksa’s visit to Thailand mid last year, Weeratunga flew to meet the former President.
The controversial MiG 27 deal was first revealed by Sunday Times Defence Correspondent and Senior Journalist Iqbal Athas in December 2006 and further exposed in The Sunday Leader then edited by murdered Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge.

Assuming if they formed a cabinet not taking lesser -evil men – how would we have been served by now ? Ithink given that Rajakashe and other notorious men would not have been given nominations to contest the last elections, could help a lot. In many jurisdictions bank secrecy can only be uplifted with a local court order.
Would Mr Weeratunga have been stupid enough to use his own name and SL passport(s) to open accounts when he has had time to obtain other citizen ships, off shore companies and trusts?
I believe that he has Ukrainian citizen ship also. Simply spelling his name in a slightly different way will mislead investigators looking for Mr Weeratunga.

After spending a colossal sum they both died within a week and it was unbearable to see two funerals in the same house within 10 days and the doctor who performed the routine procedure just vanished, suppose to have gone to US for a holiday.
We have corrupt polticans,lawyers,doctors and some custodians of the main religion who are only interested in making money without pity. It is never a Darmadeepaya,bad from top to bottom. To day none came to my work site but appeared to get the salaries of 6 workers and I am glad that I have a good burgher friend who visits the site by surprise and sending me photos of the work they are doing and he is doing this for me in spite of his busy life.
