A Leader Like No Other, A Party Like No Other

By Narada Senanayake –

An obstinate man does not hold opinions. Opinions hold him” – Alexander Pope.

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe

The UNP is in crisis.

The people know it. The party loyalists are tormented by it.  The party leader is not aware of it.  When Lenin wrote his famous tract- ‘what is to be done?’ he began by recognizing the problem. He wrote “Our party is in a state of formation. There is the danger of diversion from the correct path. Ranil is not Lenin. Ranil is a leader like no other leader, leading a party like no other party.

For the UNP to decide on the way forward, it must first trace the path that brought it to this point, period and phase. This essay is intended to help that process.

 Resolving the Riddle of Ranil

Why does Ranil resist reforms in the party?  Because they are not needed stupid!

Leaders lead. Followers follow. That is the effortless, painless world that Ranil Wickremesinghe the UNP leader inhabits.

He accepts no other arrangement. As most psychologists would say, man is a creature of habit. His reactions are automatic reflexes from the stimuli of his environment. Which is why Warren Buffet remarked that “Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken”.

All his life, Ranil has lived in an environment of privilege. He has never knocked on doors. Doors have always remained open to him.

Ranil is convinced that he is the destined successor of J.R. Jayewardene. JRJ made him a cabinet minister in his first term. And that was before he turned thirty. That was destiny. A destiny that he will not share today, with others in his party.

Since then his task has been a  battle to match his destiny to the  vagaries of politics. Quite early in his political journey, he wisely concluded that he does not possess that annoying attribute – the common touch, the ability to be ordinary among ordinary people. That was essential to retain his rural base in Biyagama his first constituency, won in the 1977 landslide. Why bother changing habits or renouncing birthrights when more convenient options are available?

He deftly switched his base to metropolitan Colombo. That is what JR did when he moved from Kelaniya to Colombo South. Adequate funds and machine politics are efficient substitutes for public approval.

Ranil is not the archetypical grassroots leader. He is the quintessential string puller leader. There is no way he will oblige the UNP backbenchers in their demand to reform the party. Reform means change. The very anatomy of change is determined not by one’s surroundings but by one’s inherent mind set. When change and reform are mooted, his instinct commands him to dig deep and stay put. That is what he has done now.

The modern information age has no place for leaders such as Ranil Wickremesinghe. In this age, followers don’t follow leaders. Followers have the resources to make or break leaders.

So, if Ranil thinks that he has won the first round, he is in for not one surprise but plenty.

What is a political party?

There was a time when the political party was the intermediary between the state and society. That was the time when political parties articulated policy and were propelled by a political elite who were generally agreed on the state of the world and what was needed to be done.

That world is no more. The end of the civil war under an all -powerful executive presidency resulted in institutionalizing leader centric political parties.

That has virtually ensured a lifetime political relevancy for Mahinda Rajapakse.

He is the exception to the rule. Neither the SLFP nor the UNP can repeat, duplicate or clone the ‘Pohottuwa’ trick. That does not mean that there is no life after Pohottuwa’.

Sheep are a breed like any other breed. There is a limit to their numbers. The sheep are with Mahinda. The problem with both Ranil and Maitrhri is that they are prowling the countryside for non-existing sheep. Rest of the constituency think for themselves. They are not sheep.

There was a time when political parties were regarded by the citizenry with some degree of esteem. The relative degree of such esteem decided the ranking of political parties.   Nowadays, ranking of political parties is decided by the antipathy and or apathy towards political parties.

Under the first past the post system of elections to parliament, political parties were compelled to nurse and retain members of parliament who were competent and loyal to the party. This has changed. There is no political existence without the party. The party is no longer an ideological repository. Charismatic leaders such as Mahinda can control a party more or less in the style of a ‘boss’ controlling a ‘gang’. That Mahinda has been supremely successful in his style of politics is beyond debate.

What Ranil Wickemesinghe and Maithripala Sirisena should learn is that there can only be one Robin Hood at a time in the Sherwood Forest.

In today’s context the raison d’être’ of a political party is not its manifesto or its ideology. What matters to a political party in today’s volatile frame is its ability to persist as an organization.

Central to a party is its ability to retain a command structure that can retain its organizational strength. Now Ranil believes that Ravi is a better organizer no matter what Joseph Michael thinks.

Conversely John thinks that ‘Viagra’ can make him as masculine as ‘Navariyan Ranjan’.

Five types of followers

Harvard professor Barbara Kellerman has identified five types of followers. These five types follow good, bad and ugly leaders. They instinctively tilt towards ethical, unethical or non-ethical leaders. Leaders after all are made by followers. Some leaders dispense with followers preferring to operate with cronies. Cronies too are a type of followers as you may gather from the following categorizations.

The first category is called ‘Isolates’.  Example – Gamini Jayawickreme Perera, Ajith Mannaperuma

They are the innocuous types. They just don’t give a damn as to who leads them. For some reason they have joined the party. They do what is assigned to them and go about quietly keeping their heads below the parapet. They will follow the leader acceptable to most others.

The second category are ‘Bystanders.’  Example – Thalatha Athukorale. They watch from the sidelines. They are professionals in the business. They are observers. They don’t take sides. In leadership battles, they don’t offer active support to anyone in the contest.

The third category are the participants.  Examples – Ranjan Ramanayake, Range Bandara , Ajith Perera, Harsha de Silva, Sujeewa Senasinghe, They watch from the sidelines. They are professionals in the business. They are observers. They don’t take sides. In leadership battles, they don’t offer active support to anyone in the contest.

The fourth type are the ‘Activists.’ Example – Eran Wikremeratne. They feel committed to the party and the leader in that order. To them organization is paramount. When they support the leader they can be energetic, eager and engaged. When they don’t support the leader, they go in to hibernation. When disenchanted with the leader they prefer to sulk in a corner. They don’t join rival parties in protest. They curse the leader and wait!

Then there are the ‘Diehards.’ Example – John Amaratunge, Tilak Marapana, Daya Gamage, Malik Samarawickrama etc.

They are passionate about their leader. They are ready and willing to be dictated by the leader. These are the type that get in to the working committee of the party!

Lying and deceiving with sophistication is the order of the day whether
voters take it or not , leaders or followers . Ranil doesn’t care because
people don’t care ! PEOLPLE DON’T CARE BECAUSE THEY ARE CARELESS
EVEN OF THEIR OWN LIFE , THEIR MOTHER AND FATHER . BROTHER AND
SISTER AND CHILDREN ! WHAT IS MORE ? HOW DOES SUCH PEOPLE
DESERVE BETTER LIFE ? WHY NOT THE SAME DEGREE OF RAGE AGAINST
THE MINORITY DOESN’T GO AGAINST LIES,DECEPTION,CORRUPTION AND
FRAUDS ? Because they don’t care . That is why we have wrong leaders !

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH RANIL.but he must take some spoken dirty singla CLASS in a way he can deliver what he thing to ordinary singla village people.his royal style is not going to help him any more.uneducated people like WIMAL MODAWNSE are popular among ordinary people because they tell all the BORU and get votes due their abelity of speaking.I THING RANIL MUST GET SOME TRAINING FROM RAJITHA SENARATNE.RANIL IS AN EXAMPLE AS RICH MAN FOOLISH CHILD.

Paragon, let us at least get the important things right. The majority in this country are Sinhala people and they speak the Sinhala language. They are not ‘singla’ people and they don’t speak ‘singla’. If we – the ones who comment – don’t even know that or couldn’t care, then we aren’t qualified to comment.

At the funeral of Late UNP Party Leader and the PM Mr. Dudley Senanayake, then a Minister in his Cabinet, Late Mr. J.R.Jayawardene in concluding his funeral oration, has said: “SWEET DREAMS MY PRINCE”. Now just imagine what will a present member from the “Majority” of the UNP is assigned to make a “Farewell” speech on the departure of Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe from the Party’s Leadership and Premiership, would say. I would be very confident in hearing it like this: THANK GOD, ULTIMATELY AND FINALLY THE ” BUGGER” IS NO MORE. HAIL COMMONSENSE VICTORY.

Douglas is wrong. Ranil is well aware that if he stays the party will vanish. Even then Ranil stzays in the same position and his target is minimum the PM post. Because, he thinks he can do better than Mahinda Rajapkse or Maithripala sirisena.

Coo won’t happen either. There’s enough money per personal citizen for them to care. Every time UNL increases inflation, Lankan masses jump on an aeroplane and head to the ME. Thank the gods in the end for the ME! They have closed the forced monetary gap perpetually brought on by UNP by opening the ME for manual labor of the ME masses – quite different from the 90’s and before, where masses had to starve, beg, steal and finally revolt, to survive the UNP elitist created monetary scaffold.
    *
Lanka is thus flushed with money from the ME. Unfortunately it is, in the end, used for selfish purposes and not for overall country development. The moment it is taxed, all proceeds go outside the country for UNP futuristics, this time on India via Singapore. MP’s sit wishing and praying they could be in control of a better system, but haven’t a clue on how to mobilize the masses other than in a general election where the opposition would win. In the meantime, uninitiated Ranil (to Lankan realism) is doing everything that would work well anywhere else in the world, but for Sri Lanka. Selling to places like India will destroy our egalitarian heritage and make us mean-spirited like the caste-driven Indians.

With power in their hands , they get their HEADS SWOLLEN . It is a national
disease suffered by even a minor staff in any work place public or private !
Mouths are full of power talks and an all new culture forms . We saw how
even the wives of some police high ups and MPs behaved with the public !
You got to be a down to earth character not to fall into that trap . People must
come and go to and from any position offered to them . Now , if you look at
the UNP under JRJ , it had half a dozen able leaders ready to take position
any time and the people had a clear picture of their next leader of the party .
Three leading figures and another three stand by. None of them had a
chance to do the job but yet the party stood tall ! But the second DB (Dunnoth
Baragannam) after Wijetunga , that is Ranil , plays cheap tactics not to
encourage such next in line leaderships . He enjoys some publicity stunts
by card board heroes like Ramanayake , Range , Ajith and Sujeeva ! Just
empty screams to boost Ranil’s image ! A party leader can not play games
with the party and the country if he has any respect to them . And his
image-boost cronies can not dance to his dull and boring tunes , .

Ranil, in his political career has always held portfolios worthy of executive positions, like party leader, opposition leader, prime minister but is loosing time to becoming country’s leader, and in the process, gets many salutes and doors opened for him wherever he goes. Being in such privileged positions for so many years (close to nearly 30 years or more) has made him forget what it is to be the humble man on the road. He cannot live without much of the rich trappings and business or first class travel to many foreign destinations to attend Int’l Conferences, etc.,, simply at the drop of a hat. He just cannot bear to let go of those creature comforts and return to civilian life. He has virtually turned it into his life style to always play second fiddle with no serious burden of responsibility including focus of attention. He is basically very much like greedy and pampered MR who planned and schemed to come back to power as President a third time. They are all the same – drunk with power and unwilling to relinquish their ‘high horse’ positions. .

Citizen Silver: Ranil is living the AMERICAN DREAM. MR also wanted the same. Because of Pabakaran he was sidelined. Now china is too close, Ranil is also moving towards china, Ranil is not good too. So select new idiots fro UNP, the country stays underdeveloped, now the rupee is almost worth less, I think they re thinking about even outdating 50 rupee, need to think about new horizons.

    Parties Like No Other ,
    .
    Dear Narada Senanayake,
    .
Let us forget the leader. I looked on the Internet for Constitution of the PARTY. This is as close as I got:
    .
    http://unitednationalparty.tripod.com/unp.htm
    .
    And there is this:
    .
    https://unp.lk/
    .
The Communist Party has ceased to matter, but it has at least displayed a Constitution on the Internet.
    .
    http://www.cpsl.lk/docs/constitution/constitution.htm
    .
There is another mass party in Sri Lanka:
    .
    http://slfp.lk/
    .
It is all in Sinhalese, that’s fine. Hovering the mouse over “The Party” get you something called “The Constitution” – but the page doesn’t exist.
    .
Would it not be possible for us to have legislation to get all parties to display their Constitutions on the Internet, at least by the third decade of the twenty-first century?
    .
Given the present top down system, how can even the most conscientious voter know whom to elect?

      Continuing . . .

This morning, I turned to this one time U.N.P. Member of Parliament:
      .
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhika_Kurukularatne
      .
I rang him, and he said I could most certainly quote him – accurately. He said that every registered party has a Constitution. That for the UNP just doesn’t matter, with Ranil having flouted it many times. Buddhika himself is still a loyal supporter of the party, but has never been a card-carrying member. He acknowledged that there can be no other type of member.
      .
Ranasinghe Premadasa had wanted Members of Parliament to register all voters at their expense, and Tyrone Fernando, for instance had managed his 50,000 voters. Buddhika refused, pleading poverty and had finally been given the money to register his 20,000 members.
      .
At grass-roots level, party activists just don’t know what happens. Before the local government elections, they came asking me to vote for the Party. I said they’d get my vote only if they could give me convincing answers to questions like “How can the leader of the Party be changed?”

That, I was told, was something that could only be answered after elections at another level. This one was about our locality.
      .
So, I said, well can you tell me why our Municipal Council is in two unconnected sections?
      .
      http://www.lgpc.gov.lk/downloads/Ward%20Maps/UP/Badulla/02_Badulla_Bandarawela_MC_Landscape.jpg
      .
Both the UNP group, and the SLFP group (contesting – victoriously – in this area as Independents with a watch as symbol) attempted to dodge my question. The candidate of the latter group offered to tell me on the telephone later, not in the presence of ten people. I said that I could tell them what I knew, and I was asked to go ahead.

      PART THREE
      .
      .
I said that Kahattewela was put in the Haputale electorate of old so that the lots of Sinhalese votes from that area would ensure that a Tamil wouldn’t be elected in Haputale. W.J.M. Lokubandara is the foremost advocate of the policy initially introduced in the 1960s by W.P.G. Ariyadasa.
      .
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haputale_Electoral_District
      .
“Yes, that is correct. So, it’s all in the interest of us, Sinhalese”, I was told.
      .
I retorted that these are the policies that have led to endless misery, national impoverishment, etc – and was it ethical, in any case? Shamed, they were silenced; but I wonder whether this sort of thing can ever be put right. This is the current position:
      .
      http://www.lgpc.gov.lk/downloads/Ward%20Maps/UP/Badulla/17_Badulla_Haputhale_PS_Landscape.pdf
      .
If we go back to the old electorate system, Haputale would have both THIS Pradeshiya Sabha and that for Haldummulla, plus the tiny Urban Council for Haputale.
      .
I’ve had more confirmation of the motive. Having run out of cooking gas, and it being unavailable in my locality, I had to get a cylinder from a place near the Bandarawela hospital last week. The tuk tuk guy said that his own home was in Bandarawela, but he knew not only that the hospital was in Haputale, but also the “need” for such action.
      .
And today there was this Survey Department guy named H.G.P. Gunatilleke, a squatter living adjoining my land, helping out in my garden. His entire family (he has a dozen siblings) consistently vote for MaRa. He knew it, and questioning him further I found that he knew that his big boss of not long ago has now got another assignment:
      .

Sinhala Man. Your proposal is amazing. Your area has both the provincial council and a municipal council. Besides you want a Tamil there. Are you lookig for a christian Municiapl, Provicil council and Federal electoral poltiican for the area ? Why Indian company is not operating a NAtural Gas outlet for that region ? IS it money or politics ?

          Jim softy,
          .
Since you have taken it on yourself to say various things, I’d like to have a response from you.
          .
What is my proposal? It is this quite logical one. Place the Kahattewela area in the Bandarawela Municipal Council.
          .
I’m currently in my home in “Diyabibila” (Ward One of the Municipal Council). Soon after posting this I will go to the Bandarawela town which is obviously in the MC area, on my motor-bike (I’m poor fellow who doesn’t own any other vehicle).
          .
To get to the town, there’s no way I can go, except by getting out of the Municipal area – not even if I were to fly like a bird or walk. Please consult the maps that I have given.
          .
Also, please correct these details in your comment:
          .
          1. You meant to say that my area has an M.C. and a Pradeshiya Sabha. Provincial Council elections are, hopefully, to be in October. Do you know that there are only 9 Provincial Councils in Sri Lanka? I’m in Uva.
          .
Sorry, as stated earlier, I don’t have much money, but am not a beggar. Politics? I tend to chase away most of those who come my way. BEFORE the elections, three Sinhalese candidates visited me. You won’t find them NOW.
          .
I do NOT want a Tamil here. Let the counting of the votes decide that. I’m likely to vote for a Sinhalese in this area, since I have to communicate with him/ her.
          .
How does the word “Christian” enter in to this. I’m no longer considered a Christian by most who so call themselves, although my upbringing has made me familiar with that religion. Natural Gas? – Never heard of anybody suggesting it is available.
          .
If Ward One of the HAPUTALE Pradeshiya Sabha is given to Bandarawela, I think it even likely that Sinhalese people will dominate the Municipality even more than at present. Is it up to either you or me to decide who gets elected to the Haputale?

            Dear Sinhala Man,
I think you are taking some commentators’ ramblings too seriously. They are neither as lucid or logical as you do them the courtesy of assuming. Engaging in rational discussion is self-defeating. I have noted you suggesting that CT should ban these trolls. I don’t agree. This forum would be very boring if we all were to agree on everything. The best way to deal with them is ridicule, sarcasm, etc. Insult wherever possible. It’s very easy to get under their skins.

            Idiot and racist, Jim softy,
            .
Have you learnt what the following entities are: The State (guys like us are fighting, non-violently, to keep Sri Lanka undivided; A Province (there are nine), a District (I can’t tell you off the cuff how many there are), an Electorate, a Division centering upon a Secretariat, A Grama Niladhari (official term now, instead of Sevaka) Division, and a Ward.
            .
You have revealed that you know nothing of Sri Lanka, and not answered the questions asked at the bottom of the first page of this article:

          .
I may sound rather naïve to you, but what’s to be done? I’ve just asked Jim softy to explain certain things about his comment.
          .
SOMEBODY has to pose the most basic questions. Yours is a perfectly reasonable, respectable and practical attitude. As you say, guys like me are bound to suffer. Yes, that has happened and will happen again.
          .
Before anything else I am a human being. Sinhalese is the first language that I learnt (well, English may have been learnt almost from the same time, but obviously it is not MY language. As far as I’m concerned, whatever languages you may speak, you are primarily a human being, and if you are a citizen of Sri Lanka, you and I ought to enjoy the same rights as I do.
          .
Jimmy reveals nothing about himself. Some say that he’s a Canadian; if so he has no business to be saying things here.

          Let’s hope he replies.

Ranil W needs to understand that his time is up and choose the right successor to him.
Electing a NEW UNP leader should be an open contest by the eligible Person—a supporter of UNP; acceptable to all the Sri Lankans; has a programme to get the country on a progressive peaceful path.

    • 2
      0

“Ranil W needs to understand that his time is up and choose the right successor to him.”

why should he choose the sucessor. This is not his party or JRJ’s party. This is the party of the senenayakes. They only started it.

All memebers of the UNP should vote for the leader.Nobody should put up their hands and candidates.Let the members just go and vote for the person they like. Then we can see the popularity of all the UNP MP’s including ranil. An option is to say that the election is just to ascertain the feelings of the members and the leader with highest votes will not automatically become the leader until further discussion after forming a new working committee based on the highest votes given to the MP’s.

this is what you call democracy. If democratic principles are not followed in ones own party how are you going to ask the people’s votes with a clear concience. You should be a democrat at heart first.

      Yes, who is the successor…

is he that empty vessel Sajith ? Without no academic credentials but a father made mouth piece … only. ?

Anyone who took the office had enough exp over the decades but Sajith is no better to Rajapakshe or any rascals that looted and hoodwinked the people on and and on.

I think it is best time people to decide for a non-party leader…
We are so fed up of PARTY politciians.

As is the case in France, we also have a shift of paradigm in this society.

But stupid folks dominated lanka would never allow changes to be taken in lanken society.

Most of them are upto easy gains.

Its best to come up with a solution rather that unwarranted comments. Ok lets replace Ranil with whom??? Sajith, Navin, Ravi, Wijedasa, Ameratunga, come on guys name someone

      1

      chamuditha

a leadership council consisting of 4 leaders.1.ranil wickremesinghe-reponsible for western province.2.sajith-responsible for southern prov.3.navin-responsible for central and uva province.4.akila viraj kariyawasam -responsible for north western and north central prov.

When decisions are to be made for the whole country the majority of the 4 will prevail. If it is a tie put it to the working committee.

4 heads are better than one.4 against the rajapakshe3 of mahinda, basil and gota.Though mahinda is the leader these 3 work together and make the decisions. That is their strength.

Ranil can’t take on the 3 rajapakshe bros on his own.now his ally sira has turned on him too.He needs another 3 co- leaders.

In unity there is strength. The unity of 3 brothers is their strength.

i think better to take Uva from navin and give it to harin.Give sabaragamuwa to navin. Then thre are 5 leaders in the leadership council of the UNP.These 5 putting their heads together and working closely together should be able to beat the 3 rajapakshes leaders.

      Dear Chamuditha Senanayaka,

That is an important challenge. But who has the time to find out such names? Perhaps we guys who are said to “waste” so much time on the Internet do!
      .
Let me refer you back to what I told the UNP candidate for this Ward, No 1 – Diyabibila, of the Bandarawela M.C. She seemed an honest grass-rots person, called “Bandu Akka” by the people of the area. This new system is pretty good in that sense – it allows us to pass information on to people who are sufficiently concerned.
      .
I told her that the current Lands Minister, Gayantha Karunatilleke was a good man, but I focussed on the Akuressa electorate, where My3 had blundered by nominating a guy named Saruwe Sunil:
      .
      https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/saruwa-sunil-now-bats-for-yahapalanaya-wife-gets-nomination-from-sirisena/
      .
I’ve looked at that link again just now, and I’m surptised at how much I’ve said there. Subsequent to what I said there, but before the LG Elections, I visited Akuressa for the first time since being a baby. It was at the end of January 2018 that I visited Waralla (quite close by) and stayed in the house built in 1930 by Mr M.D. Yapa. His son, Harischandra, senior to me, but taught by my father, occupies the house now. A nice guy who gets annoyed at only one thing: being referred to as the brother of Vijitha Yapa of Bookshop fame.
      .
Haris has written a couple of books on the area – in Sinhala, so that those who remain in the village will know its history.
      .
I passed through Akuressa many times during the three days that I was there. The stories I have told were confirmed.
      .
In case you don’t look at that earlier CT story, the local UNP guy is Buddhika Pathirana, and Bandu Akka of Bandarawela was honest enough to say that Ranil is probably scared of such people. However, let us not blow up our heroes too much: Buddhika was not as brilliant a Medical Student as all that – but he’s a good politician.

I know the two brothers, Harischandra and Vijitha Yapa of Akuressa quite well. The former is a very nice man the latter is quite the opposite. The latter is uppish to the core and loves gossip. Hats off to Sinhala Man for befriending with Harischandra, my mango friend, who is so very beautiful,

Do you know UPALI MARASINGHE ?

          Interesting comment, Dulcie.
          .
Yes, those three days together have been followed by many long phone chats and not so long e-mails by me since he reads all those on his mobile, although he could easily get himself something more comfortable. Eccentric in the nicest way.
          .
He had got to Vancouver, Canada just a couple of days ago. As you know he helps humanity in his own unique way by helping re-cycle all that is discarded by the “throw-away-society” there. We’ve made such a mess of garbage disposal, not being sufficiently conscious of how important it is for us to keep using things as long as possible so that posterity will have something left for them to use.
          .
And he maintains such close links with the village. There was this retired school principal who was helping him polish the Sinhala he was using. How many others would even consider undertaking such labours of love – and for the less favoured.
          .
I’ve put much elder brother Keerthi in touch with one of his Richmond College school-mates who was my boss (Principal) in two different places. Another man with great social concern and knowledge, but who with almost anything that I say which relates to politics. A man of the highest integrity who always taught a full Science Time-table (in Sinhalese, more recently in English) and now feels that the great need is for us to take English to the villagers who so much want it, but know not how to get it. I can’t really say that I know Keerthi well.

As for Vijitha, my memory of him stretches back to when he was about eleven and I about five. It may be that you’ll enjoy this! It was after the end of term: the oldest students in the school had been somewhere and performed Vijayaba Kollaya (how innocent those days were. Today it’d spark an ethnic conflict merely to mention it). Anyway, all the other students were taken home by their parents, but in Vijitha’s case, father and mother had each imagined that they had delegated that duty to the other. As adults Vijitha and I have met only briefly a few times – but he does remember how he was then stuck in my parents home for a whole week, until he was fetched home by one parent.
          .
          To make a different point:
          .
          http://archives.dailynews.lk/2013/01/23/fea02.asp
          .
I gave that link to the Old Boys Association of the school. Budhika, (referred to elsewhere) is the oldest who turns up, and I’m next. We try hard to draw attention to “small is beautiful” and how links to humble ways are important. But no, what was put on FaceBook was only the Bandarawela experience, not the more remarkable couple of years in M.D. Yapa Vidyalaya. Relative to what I have come to expect, there’s next to no English in this school any more but we pretend that all is fine.
          .
Another observation: The Bookshop is so well-known among the Colombo elite and tourists, but nobody else seems to have even heard of it. This is symptomatic of the focus on syllabus books only. Vijitha doesn’t stock such books, but he’s successful with what he handles.
          .
His other traits – well, I’ll be careful, but that objection of Haris reflects the need for his own humble self respected.

WOW, excellent list. Why minorities are discriminated ?, Is it all these for minorities or form Evangelists ? I can imagine why Wijedasa was hiding. Some one said inside his house there is a Latar built for Baby JEsus.

I think it is good to take time for a change.

Just pass it to any young leader – is no means fine

Sajith has no whatsoever experience to run the country. We perfectly know how his father ran it to all abusive ends. However, his father is no means worst to Rajapakshe.
Rajapakshe has broken all worst record, nevertheless people are after him since MEDIA mafia is run by them even today.

This govt came into power, but MEDIA men stay under the clutch of Rajapalskeh even today.
Lankadeepa, or other printed media men are after Rajapakshe for some reasons.
These men would never think twice.
These men keep facts and figure away from people.
So how can people be aware of the truths.
    The country is like Northkorea.

Hora hora hora are in the media, but Investigaitons lag
There are even prima facie evidence, that would not work because Mafia connection with Rajpakashe is very strong.

Ranil is a firm believer that his destiny comes from his lineage. He sees no other position other than the fiefdom of the U N P. There is only one probable successor to him in the party royalty succession line. Sadly, that will not be his progeny.

Treating of the party as your fiefdom is the curse, for want of a better phrase, with our politics.

At least with Ranil, he presents himself well always, will never frighten the dogs, and his table manners are a cut above the rest. His Teflon coating ensures that failures and setbacks are but passing clouds; there is always a tomorrow.

Everyone else in the party will always be followers.

Both MR and RW have one thing in common; both can never see themselves becoming elder statesmen and getting to be above the fray. There is no afterlife for these two.

Why the sucker (in more sense than one) doesn’t want to leave politics or UNP leadership is because he has never had a life outside these things. He will be thinking what am I to do?[Edited out]

Justice and Fair Play: Thanks. It was not from my memory; but a an associate of JRJ on contact told me. He confirmed it on further verification. Even your version, taken as correct represents the honor that Late Leader and PM received compared to this present man.

Dear Douglas and Justice & Fair Play,
      .
I remember the speech well enough, and you do know, don’t you, that he was echoing Horatio’s words from Hamlet?
      .
HORATIO Now cracks a noble heart. Good night sweet prince:
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!
      .
You’ve got to go down to line 344 in this closing scene of the play:
      .
      http://www.shakespeare-online.com/plays/hamlet_5_2.html
      .
I agree that JRJ was outstandingly intelligent, but he was not loved the way Dudley was (well, I think by now we all know what reservations I’d express, although you may not share them.)
      .
The ending of the play is quintessential of Shakespeare tragedies. Four deaths in four minutes, and Horatio, too wanting to go off with what remained in the poisoned chalice, but prevented by Hamlet.
      .
There was much speculation as to what JRJ implied, with some suggesting that he was speaking his relief that at long last, he who was older than Dudley, now had his chance.
      .
The teacher in me cannot resist saying that there are a good many further things to be said about that scene:
      .
“If thou didst ever hold me in thy heart
      Absent thee from felicity awhile,”
      .
The first of those lines consisting of artless Anglo Saxon words, the next of sophisticated Latinate words.

“A Leader Like No Other, A Party Like No Other “, “A leader like a typical state sector employee in SL”

-Neither want to give up the position nor want to improve on the position
    -Don’t accept changes
-Perks, hikes and freebies and don’t care who pays the price

None of these party in-fights would have emerged if General election was held
soon after the president election followed by LG poll . All in one after the other,
super victories for a change with a powerful governance . Why didn’t it happen
with these so-called 40 and fifty year of political experience ? Why do they
celebrate their political life of forty , fifty years ? Stupidity at its best ? I see it like
this , 1. Tamil issue has to go on without solution . 2. SLF + UNP mix govt needs an
opposition not led by JVP . 3. War crime charges can be better managed with the
accused having some power . 4. Corruption and frauds allegations can be weakened
by making the accused powerful to defend themselves . And,And,And the people of
the paradise lived in peace and stupidity forever !

A laughable propaganda Article.Ranil is not the type of Politician Srilanka needs at the Helm at present.we need a dynamic younger Politician to lead this Country.Royalists Clan and his undemocratic Grip on his party Henchmen is detrimental to our NationProgress,as apparent today.Personal Glorification of Individuals very notable in the Srilankan political circles should be overhauled by Glorification of Individuals serving the Nation in other walks of Life.Ranil has no Leadership qualities to bring the Nation forward irrespective of his long political Carreer.Just an Example a proven Cheat as Ravi is still hovering round his Head. What Principles has he got?

The writer has not an inkling of an idea about a Sri Lankan political party leader. Who was the leader who was different than Ranil’s conduct in the UNP? Mrs B ruled the party for 42 years without any sort of reform. Dinesh Gunawardena has held on to party leadership since 1979. If Ranil was so bad why did not anyone shone to kick him out. The fact of the matter is the UNP’s second level is a lot worse than its leader

Short answers: Dudley Senanayake was not power crazy. It looked as though his father had forced leadership on him too early, but it was probably more complicated.
      .
Find out about Sir John Kotelawela’s parents. Mother’s family: Atygalle. Three sisters and s murdered brother. Check on whom they married.
      .
But as someone has wisely told me, there’s no point going in to all this dirty History. Let’s get together and form a new party, perhaps.
      .
The young UNPers we know are those who have been given recognition and publicity by Ranil. There are many even in Parliament whom we don’t know, but yes, it would be best to draw in people who have never been in politics, although it is important that they be people who are involved in some activity outside their own homes and families.
      .
For a start, why not this: I have checked and been told that the constitution of every registered Political Party is in a file in the Office of the Elections Commission:
      .
Make it mandatory for the Constitution of every Political Party to be displayed on the Internet. So much money gets stolen that even if State Funds are spent on paying for every website – that is assuming that you can’t just casually register a political party. One could also stipulate other features. For instance, I have heard it said that “Racist Names” should not be allowed. I disagree because in practice both the UNP and the SLFP have been pretty racist. So, this will adversely affect only minority community parties. What we can and must do is to ensure that little children are not brainwashed in to belief in mythologies with no chance of their knowing anything else.
      .
A good deal of thinking is necessary!
