Jaya’s fall from grace after her conviction for corruption is reverberating in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere particularly among the Eelam Tamils Who are distressed and feeling the loss of a strong supporter. However the past history shows that the Delhi governments have always taken steps to cut down the size of Tamil Nadu leaders. Many past chief ministers have been victims of their moves.
Annadurai has to abandon the seperate Dravida nadu slogan due to legislation by Nehru.
MGR was stopped by and forced to support the Indo-Ceylon accord when Rajiv Gandhi pulled him out of his bed and raised his hand in the mass meeting at Madras.
Karunanidhi considered as the custodian of the world Tamils often fall into silence to save his position and preserve the interests of his family members as happened during the 2009 slaughter of Tamils. Since then his credibility was always dubious.
Jayalalithaa once the fierce critic of LTTE until its demise ,switched her sympathy towards the Eelam Tamils, seeing the vaccum in leadership after the 2009 genocide of the Tamils, when Karunanidhi faltered and kept deadly silence, when the massacres were going in the north and east – the historic homeland of the Tamils.
Whatever the motives Jaya is standing out as a stubborn defiant and bold leader who has the charisma to muster Tamil Nadu to rebel and stand up against the centre in favour of Eelam Tamils.
Since her massive success in the Tamil Nadu state elections, she has become a veritable source of irritation for Modi and to the centre, when she passed the historical resolution in the state assembly in support of Eelam Tamils. Modi’s efforts to impose Hindi in schools and in the public forums were outrightly rejected it by Jaya, Modi feared the she could become a nightmare propelling Tamil nationalism in Tamil Nadu and Eelam where by setting up the destabilization of the nation. Beside she has mass support due to her Populist measures in Tamil Nadu.
Modi found the opportunity in the conviction of Jaya to cut down her size and use it cleverly and stealthily by a favourable and helpful judiciary which passed unreasonable and unprecedented sentences and fine of 100 crores.
Though Jaya has to bear the liabilities for the offences she is undeservely punished due to politically sinister objectives.
Her sudden fall is a blow to the Eelam Tamils at this crucial period. There is a big question whether the Tamil Nadu leaders without Jaya would carry on the campaign in unity to save the Eelam Tamils or succumb to the political ambitions and concentrate only on seizing the power in Tamil Nadu.
To sumup the best course of action for Eelam Tamils and TNA is to prevail on the Tamil Nadu leaders to the setup a unified front to fight for the lost rights of the Eelam Tamils.
TNA has to reass the situation take a bold stand and launch mass agitations in Eelam without leaving their baggages in New Delhi and hoping for deliverance from Modi. As the Tamil proverb says “Do not trust but behave only trustingly”
Better late than never.

The Japanese have just started investing in TN auto industry and it is not to Modi’s liking because he wants it all for his state of Gujarat – the sister city agreements between Guangzhou (IT hardware hub) and Ahmadabad. It seems Modi wants the manufacture of auto spare parts and most of the vehicle in his state. Will the Japanese take the hard route because Modi has bought political uncertainty in TN??
Guangzhou has schools of IT set up by south Indians who also provide china with software. In Shanghai alone there are 500 such schools run by a single south Indian company.
India paid a record $2 billion in 1991 for the patent right to engineering plastics for the manufacture of car bumpers (the ambassador had steel) That is the state of Indian automobile industry and the rest of the Japanese vehicles are mostly imported from Japan and assembled. However, only Tamil Nadu still has indigenous auto spare parts industry and the likes of TVS thanks to the British Austin, Morris, Hillman Ford etc – most of the industry that fed it is still there and Jaya showed this to Hillary.
Almost 10 years ago China purchased MG from UK and took it away lock stock and barrel but they have not produced and sold any as yet. UK handed over Range Rover Jaguar to TATA and also gave them £3 billion to hand it over to Chinese auto maker Chery Automobile who are doing very well- TATA cannot manufacture for the international market.
That is the state of the Hindian Auto Industry like all other eg Manufacture of Silk fabric. India’s largest manufacturer has all South Korean machinery and his raw material – the silk to be spun also arrives from South Korea.
FDI is tricky business: The Japanese, Taiwanese, S Koreans manufactured goods in China but the goods were taken away for testing to homeland because of security of patent rights. The Chinese copied most of it and the Indians would do the same. The Japanese cannot leave China manufacturing to a nearby country which has cheap labour because those countries don’t have a manufacturing base for spares like bobbins, buttons etc.

India and Tamilnadu are important players in the Eelam situation but they are not the only ones. Jayalalitha cannot be discounted yet. Karunanidhi and his family along with the DMK are beyond redemption. Modi will see that the 2G scam is played out and that Kanimoli and Maran and put away. Jayalalitha will be back in four years, much stronger as a figure, being cleansed of her past sins of corruption. What she does is not very important. Modi will court Rajanikanth but the Tamils are wise. They will give him the boot.
But, for Sri Lanka, these events do not count. It is not necessary to trust the crafty Indians who are forever prone to bribery. (Bhandari comes to mind). They are a corrupt lot who would sell their mothers for profit.
What counts is that there is a well spring of support for ethnic groups to separate if they have been abused. This will solidify in time to come. The Scots, the Catalans, the Quebecans etc will keep this in the limelight as will the diaspora. By that time, Rajapaksa will not be there. Probably, he would have been convicted of war crimes, adding support to the view that Tamils had been cruelly treated. It could well be that there is a more accommodating government in the South which sees that the country cannot progress without the ethnic problem being solved. Instead of selling ourselves to the Chinese and the Indians let us solve this problem by ourselves on a just basis acceptable to all sides, leaving aside the inflexibility of the Mahavamsa mindset that has been the bane of politics in the island.

Reading your article I get the impression that you have let your despair overtake your thinking. I agree that Jaya who stood for Eelam Tamils in their hour of need will always be in our hearts and minds.
But the Tamil cause is much bigger than a Single individual. The killing of Martin Luther King didn’t stop the blacks from getting their rights. 46 Years after he died America has a black president.
I don’t subscribe to your views about the conspiracy theory from the Centre to marginalise Tamilnadu. Indian political system has changed for good and Regional Parties are going to play a dominant role and any party who ignores that reality will do so at their own peril.
Congress is finished and BJP is a loose alliance and might not even last the full term.
Modi of all the people knows this and that is why after the rhetoric during the elections he has come down to earth and understands the difficulties of holding the alliance together and that is why he has gone soft on many issues.
If BJP try to take advantage of Jayas fall BJP will pay a heavy price.
Rajanikanth knows too well that although he is a popular movie star he is not MGR and that is why he is refusing to enter politics. Just remember what happened to Kalai Kurisil ” Sivaji Ganeshan ” when he entered politics.
So don’t despair as although the Indian role is crucial in solving the Sri Lankan Tamil issue I take the view that as soon as UNHCR delivers its GUILTY verdict on MR India will fall in to line.
How can Modi deal with a ” Guilty Man” and an outcaste.

Immediately after the Jayalalitha’s imprisonment, Pon Rathakrishnan, the Tamilnadu chief of BJP made a revealing and, to many, a startling announcement. He claimed that the time has come for BJP to be on the way to take the reins in Tamilnadu. It will not take a rocket scientist to understand what that statement portends.
A hostile Tamilnadu with a massive electoral victory by Jayalalitha in both elections certainly would have been a concern in Delhi and as the days pass by, and with the boldness of the Rajapakse regime in ignoring the “pleas” of Modi, it can be surmised that Delhi is obviously playing politics with the lives of Jaffna Tamils. Either they get the minimal or nothing if BJP does not get the state or BJP will step-in in it gets to rule the state. Yes, it is a master plan to break the backbone of Tamilnadu and its support to the Eelam cause but what the political pundits may be have not realised or understood is the undercurrents that had generally expected this to happen and have been waiting for such an opportunity to stamp the footprint. Perhaps, the losers, including BJP, will be licking their wounds and may pave the way for even worse hostile reaction to Delhi.
It will be certainly a dream come true for BJP to take hold of Tamilnadu but as it is, it will be a pipe dream. Expecting the Tamils to take the bait is quite wishful thinking, not just because of the SL factor, but aspersions and suspicion that has always been part of the co-habitation.
