Abeynayake Flaunts His Hypocrisy In Today’s Editorial

Despite being readily available to wash the dirty linen of the Rajapaksa-regime, Editor of state -owned newspaper Daily News has shamelessly accused the journalist who was heavily assaulted by UPFA supporters in Haliela, of being part of the UNP parade as the reason that led to his assault.

Daily News Editor Rajpal Abeynayake seems to have a hard time believing the journalist was at the scene covering the attack on the UNP parade by UPFA supporters. He however, does not hold any doubts believing government Minister Dilan Perera‘s claims when he ‘swears’ that the victimized journalist was in fact a participant of the UNP rally.

In what seems to be a justification of the attack on the UNP rally (which he has described as a losers’ parade) in Haliela by UPFA supporters, Abeynayake has stated that the journalist who was assaulted had not been wearing his ‘journalistic hat’ during the time of the assault.

“Though it may beggar belief that a professional scribe is party to an overtly political effort, it is not difficult to believe these days that journalists are for all intents and purposes card carrying members of political parties, even though they parade as being fiercely independent and ‘unbowed’ professionals,” he has written in today’s editorial titled ‘A Neutral Laugh’.

Although he himself was among the journalists who accepted laptops distributed to journalists by the Rajapaksa-regime, he has gone on to accuse today’s Sri Lankan journalists of ‘pretending to be independence’ and instead remaining in the pockets of political leaders, enslaved by generous grants that come in terms of picking travel tabs and other financial benefits which he claims are doled out by NGOs.

Though it initially seems today’s editorial is about trying to paint the government and its Ministers white with regard to the allegations of attacking Harin Fernando’s rally in Hali Ela, Abeynayake has quickly moved on to attack the local New York Times correspondent criticizing her independence as a journalist stating she is a ‘dyed in wool cheerleader for the UNP’.

It makes the readers wonder, the level of the grudge Abeynayake bears against the New York Times as he has gone on to question comments made by the NYT correspondent in New Delhi for the explanation he has offered for recruiting the Sri Lankan journalist over others.

Forget about today’s ADVERTORIAL for UPFA. Read yesterday’s – he was in total denial about the Chris Nonis episode saying if such a thing happened it was a fictional story! He was endorsing only good things & good news should be reported. I have seen dipsticks righting editorials all over the world but have never seen a imbecile like this. He is not fit even to write a editorial in Porn magazine. I suppose he may be well versed in that sense after his infamous visits in Switzerland & Pattaya beach.

You should first attend to your problem of “erectile disfuntion”.

But is it really ed, or your stench that repulses them? Try to find out first.

This [Edited out] would never grasph the gravity of the problem that the nation faces today because of MR administration. MR has failed to maintain his external ministry from 2005 on keeping away carrier diplomats while appointing his baggage boys to make decisions for the the country. For him, just to be close with him has been crucial than the real dipolmatic being made with outside world. Even with China, the relationship that Mrs B and CBK maintained have been harvested by him today. But people quesiton how long the over corrutped highly abusve MR can continue this way. Now I have no doubt, Chris Nonis will not add any view supportive to MR administration considering the manner the brainless president solved it – not addressing the issue directly- but just being hung on to his Medamulana (crime friendly) agendas.

Beating the losing party is typical of an emerging barbaric culture. Whatever happened to Buddhist values. When the constitutional rights of people were neglected, religious values filled the void. Looks like deterioration of religious values and humiliation of the constitution, compounded by Beli-atta style thuggery is taking the country to new depths.

But, don’t expect any values from state media editors. They are master cover up agents. Usually they never had values, not only in this Government, but also in previous Governments.

The Buddhist values presently finding acceptance amongst the masses are the values recommended by the likes of Bodu Bala Sena that are tacitly supported by the mainstream Buddhist hierachy and encouraged by the opportunistic Rajapaksa brothers.

Opportunistic vultures like Rajpal Abeynaike thrive under such climates and the fact that the daily News is the biggest selling newspaper in Sri lanka tells a lot about the people who buy this raf of a newspaper, if you can call it that.

Correct me if I am wrong but does it matter if the assault was on a journalist or a peaceful protestor? An asssault is an assault & should not be condoned. This [Edited out] is a disgrace to his old school. Unfortunately, [Edited out] seems to be a way of life in SL now.

Under the law assault is an assault. I do not think a judge is authorized to punish harder for the assault of a Journalist. But, basically all journalist assault come from some kind organised political action from the governments. This indicate a substantial human right abuse present in that area. That is a very serious problem. Other than that, it is quite normal even in UN, American, British… press meetings, Person responsible for press dealing flatly refuses to answer to the pressmen(No assault). They would report that in their press and the evaluation of that action will be the readers responsibility.

In some palaces, the demonstrating crowd turns out to be unruly, police use force. Many get affected. They are normal. But if the police attacks the press on the name of unruly behavior it is an indication of organized human right violation.

The fact that Lanka is the 4th worst country for pressmen is another factor has be considered that a kind of selective punishments existing against pressmen in Lanka. Then that pre-planned case is a higher level crime than assaulting an ordinary demonstrator.

So if the assault is on a pressman, the reader has to first assume it as an organized human right violation and has to start to investigate the impact of such action.

However much you dislike a journalist for his views, he should nevertheless be cherished and safeguarded, because at the end of the day, it is only the journalists that are left to divulge the rights or wrongs of our leaders. If his/her views are wrong, challenge them or put your counter arguments or don’t buy their papers. Never shut them out.
