AKD & Company: Power Vs Service

By Vishwamithra

“Power is given to those who dare to lower themselves and pick it up. Only one thing matters. to be able to dare!” ~ Fyodor Dostoevsky

Power lends control and control begets false superiority. That is why those who seek power always tend to pursue it to the exclusion of everything else. Sometimes, in fact, more often than not, utterly incapable men are found to be in seats of absolute power; they show ease and comfort in adjusting to the new circumstances surrounding the lofty perches which, if abused or even misused willy nilly, one day would make the holder of those high pedestals regret so much, even driving them to suicide. In most circumstances, those who attain power and then exercise it to the hilt without any consideration for those who become subject to that power, do not realize the very fundamental nature of all things, including power, in this vast universe: impermanence. Siddhartha Gautama the Buddha has taught us that universal truth.

Here I am talking about political power, which Henry Kissinger described as the most powerful aphrodisiac in the world. All those, except perhaps a handful in history, who occupy the seats of power begin indulging in the alluring comforts and luxuries that power throws out towards the occupant; they in modern-day terms, it could be wining and dining in supra-class hotels and restaurants, single malt whiskey accompanied by occasional heroine and cannabis; it could be a most attractive lady of the evening looking forward to satisfying the erotic demands of the subject we discuss.

Those who provide these uncommon and seductive wants of the politician whose power could bring forth an expansion of the business empire of the provider of the comforts would willingly and readily do so for the benefits that accrue are many and vast. When the day begins in the morning, when his personal assistant provides the daily schedule, the politician is always ready to sacrifice a meeting with the constituents for a one-hour business transaction with the businessman who has pledged to fund the next campaign. This is universally true, whether the politician is a Provincial Councilor, Parliamentary MP, Cabinet Minister, Prime Minister or even the President. Such beguiling aura is providing shade and shelter to that duo: politician and businessman.

But it was service that the politician promised on the election platform. Policies and principles, that were promulgated by these politicians, have now taken the second or third place. The constituent has been relegated to the last in the line of priorities. One day of the week was scheduled as the day for the constituents. That day has now become once in two weeks; that day of the constituents meeting becoming once a month is now the subject of gossip among those who are close to the man installed in power.

Neglect of the electorate is accelerating in pace and the comforts and luxuries the politicians become associated with enhance exponentially. Did the constituents foresee this aspect of his MP at the beginning of the campaign? Certainly not. Deception is absolute and complete. That is the wicked irony of it all. The electors are too naive to rationalize what’s happening to their MP. Power has gripped him by the throat and he has become a willful victim of the power game that is being enacted before the eyes of the constituents.

Has Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD) & Company fallen into this trap? If yes, have they realized the sad truth about this phenomenon? If they have realized it, are they willing to fight it or are they also willingly discarding the whole dynamic by continuing to ignore the true picture and get entrenched in the murky and muddy soil deep and getting buried? AKD and his government need to answer these uncomfortable questions now and provide plausible answers. The people might wait that long, but no further.

First of all, AKD & Company needs to confront this stark status and provide sincere solutions. But they are in great danger of being called a ‘one man show’. I’m sure the readers can remember who else was called a ‘one man show’ President. It was R Premadasa. Premadasa was so cocky and arrogant about himself and his rhetoric, it was impossible to detach himself from the very concept of government. He didn’t trust anyone else in the government. He had his own mafia-style investigative team which was commonly known as the ‘Lawrence mafia’. The executive powers of Presidency, which were hardly or never exercised by his predecessor, JR Jayewardene, Premadasa used and abused to the bitterest end, ordinary men and women lived in fear. He maneuvered the entire government machinery to his whims and fancies.

Yet his Cabinet of Ministers were quite content and comfortable with that status quo. They were subjected to humiliation and terror, yet they tolerated it because there was no alternative to the luxuries and comforts that their positions brought forth. Real power, not just the veneer of it, starts eating into their very fabric of makeup; without their realization or even mere understanding, that all-consuming and absolutely irritating bug of power gets beneath their skin; its consumption continues until the patient has his last breath. It is not a very enchanting and inviting spectacle. Its mean and nasty apatite for the patient’s flesh and soul, if he still has one in a real sense, can never be fulfilled.

AKD & Company must beware of this cannibalistic desire; however much AKD thunders from atop the political platform, all his subordinates are ordinary and mundane men and women. Their resistance to these base and basic human needs and desires crave fulfillment and there comes a line which they should not cross at any cost and at whatever the price that is dangling before their countenance.

Service, a very subjective and intangible aspect of their chosen profession, which should be at the very core of their professional priorities, cannot be sacrificed for want of another proverbial shoe. Service cannot carry any price tag, period. The first and only purpose of this chosen profession is service. Whether that service is rendered at a micro level by carpeting their rural road or enhancing the foreign exchange availability at a macro level, it should not be relegated to any other need of the hour.

The clash, or mildly expressed as a squabble, between power and service should not be expressed in terms of measurable dollars and rupees. Power could assume many distorted elemental facets; all the facets must be taken as one and the same. For power delivers the holder’s needs and wants. Its fundamental characteristic of temptation and enticement, both in one, needs to be identified in full and its rejection too must be full and absolute. If it sounds like one practiced and preached by Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, so be it. Unlike other religions, Buddhism has taught us the very nature of impermanence and the need to identify the four noble truths: Suffering (Dukkha), Cause of suffering (Samudaya), cessation of suffering (Nirodha) and the path to cessation of suffering (Magga).

Those politicians who time and time again ask their constituents to practice Buddhism have no clue about these noble teachings, if they do possess such knowledge of Buddha’s teachings, they are deliberately disregarding the teachings and use their own quasi-religious slogans to deceive their electorates. Therefore, AKD & Company has a monumental task at hand. Not to teach Buddhism and its universally acceptable and profound principles of the religion, but to show a path more compliant to fair and balance living and co-living amongst varied communities.

The clash between Power and Service will pick up its threads until end of time. Instituting non-subjective infrastructure in order to facilitate coexistence between this sociopolitical dichotomy should be discussed, conclusions arrived at and begin to build such sustainable structures. Détente between power and service is craven, not by those who are living today and enjoying every bit of heavenly comforts it en-wraps the holder with, but by the never-ending cascade of sociopolitical circumstances.

But history stands against such a mutually acceptable marriage between power and service. In all our history, only two or three leaders of men have succeeded in installing thriving coexistence between the two. The only one Emperor King comes easily to mind: Emperor Asoka. But his legacy too may have come to naught, had the historians chosen to record only the facts and figures of his brutal killings in the Kalinga war. But his spiritual transformation to the teachings of Buddha had obviously outweighed the brutalities caused to many an enemy of his.

People love their Kings and Queens but that love and devotion is consequent upon terror and fear that the subject people enclose within their hearts and minds. Our own Parakramabahu the sixth (xi) may be mentioned in this exalted fraternity ( a mere two or three). Why not AKD & Company strive to achieve such lofty echelons?

Vishwamithra, Is it not obvious that AKD needs time to get on with and handle the executive presidency alone to plan and execute projects. The legislative to enact laws could be left to that special section. The judicial power will administrate justice and uphold laws, so that democracy is upheld for our nation and not communism as many accuse that our government is doing. No Das Kapital here. Give AKD more time.

How long? AKD has to go for the next Presidential election maximum in four years time. Why do you need time or money to make laws in parliament for some good things that he planned long before the elections. If you don’t have any lists in hand with you please accept the truth.

“If AKD and the NPP come out victorious on September 21st night, they will have accomplished a unique task: that of launching and be successful in a true revolution without bloodshed and violence. National People’s Power is a left-wing political party. They may not be blindly in league with Marxian principles of governance and economics.” So said Vishwamitra not so long ago. So what is Vishwamitra griping about?

If AKD had been open about his sharp public statements at the time, he would not have been attacked today. ALAS, whatever they said louder has become thinner in investigations such as the “sugar fraud of GOTABAYA govt” which was proven today.

Why in the world can’t our leaders prepare to cultivate all of the bare land in Sri Lanka, where a water supply is not even a pipe dream, if some African countries that are naturally deserted of their large land areas can rise to the present day? Given its proximity to Ethiopia and Bukina Fasso, I believe HE AKD will emerge as a visionary leader.

I have noticed that, unlike in the past, the majority of our fruits, vegetables, and flowers—including roses and other flowers—are now imported from Ethiopia and a few other African nations rather than from any other Asian nations. Today, even clothing is imported from Africa. If true leadership could establish more connections with many continents rather than attempting to isolate the world, I believe we could realise our economic aspirations.

“Neglect of the electorate is accelerating in pace and the comforts and luxuries the politicians become associated with enhance exponentially.”
It is the first Opportunity faced by the NPP/JVP in the North East Province. So, the above statement is the question for AKD and the eight elected parliamentarians from the North East. North East was under war for 30 years ending May 2009 but continued for 16 years continuously under military control. 99 percent of the military and over 95% of the police force are Sinhalese. The problems of the North East is much different from other parts of the country. The problems are not only economy but also militarisation, racism and unlawful encroachment of lands of people and missing people after the war etc. But I have not seen any of the NPP parliamentarians are involved with the people other than attending meetings. What prohibits them?

Tilvin Silva and the JVP are in China at the moment visiting a village and learning about local development under the overall control of the Chinese Communist Party. The future looks red.

I have been saying that JVP plan is to decentralise administrative power to grass root level under control of the state. This is to sabotage Tamil demand for autonomy to share land and power. With construction of Buddhist temples in north and east and intention to take over lands of Tamils to settle Sinhalese, and all peaceful protests by Tamils against these injustice being put down by force, there is every possibility of another war which country cannot afford. Unable to counter accusation by international community of impunity to war crimes, government has only one to take cover, and that is racism.

Didn’t a team visited India recently to learn & now visiting China for the same purpose. Seems the NPP is on a steep learning curve. Shouldn’t they have learnt something before coming to power?

Raj, they should have but they didn’t. Let’s stop referring to the NPP, its the JVP that is the real power. They are ‘Communist’ but have been forced through circumstances and public opinion to adopt ‘democracy’ and they don’t really know what to do with it.

Now that they have to deliver, their eyes have opened and are running helter-skelter with their begging bowls disguising themselves to be on a learning spree.

        Dear Raj-UK,
You and I have lived in Europe for several decades and should be well aware of the facts regarding the visit of heads of state to Europe and how they are welcomed regardless of the size of the country. Dr. Jayasankar (EAM of India) is visiting Brussels, and our head of state and his delegation are visiting Europe. However, AKD’s name appears almost nowhere in European news or tabloids for some reason…why?

The phrase “if iron bag is porous, what more talks about the woven bag” is used in Sinhala vernacular. Now that everything is twisted and they are starting to realise that it is not as simple as they claimed in their acerbic pre-election speeches.

We respectfully request that our “our NPPpromoter in Unawatuna,” Mr. Douglas, who continues to play his housana in support of the AKD-led “bunch of nitwits,” provide a white sheet that clearly demonstrates the contributions that the party has made to this country over the last “eight months of rule under JVP-NPP leadership.”

      Paul,
      .
I know nothing about the educational background of the party secretary.

My assumption is that Tilvin De Silva is as knowledgeable as Ghanaka, the spiritual leader of former controversial president Gotabay.

Tilvin is said to be the ghost behind the AKD leadership.

Tilvin’s statement that 1-2 billion USD could be collected from the entire Sri Lanka diaspoara living in rich counties once AKD leadership is established is the best reason I can confirm that Tilivin would have been a good ranger for a flock of buffaloes ploughing a paddy field, but not as an adviser to the AKD leadership.

Aside from that, RW and Maharaja drove vehicles worth 1-2 million USD each, which is another exaggerated but completely misleading public rhetoric of them.

If I’m mistaken, please correct me as we can all make incorrect assumptions.
The reason SRILANKEN’s incumbent president behaves like BANDA colombo-giya-wage (akin to Banda’s first trip to the capital colombo- or any other similar personalities, for example, in the most well-known Sinhala movie-KOLOMBASANNIYA) could be that he lacks good advisers.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC-LMCQgnz8.

The worse he behaves, the more country s image will tarnish. We are another small and perpetually begging nation, mired in stagnation due to people’s disharmony, no matter – intra or intercommunities

    Ajith,
You pinpointed the problems faced by the general population (TAMILS) via proper civil administration in the north-east (NE) provinces. This is because the shadow administrators are from the three forces of SL. More than 90% of police, army, and navy stationed there are sinhalese, out of which more than 90% are racist sinhala buddhist (SB). Their ingrained mentality is Tamils are slaves, particularly after 2009. If this triforces are replaced with locals, most of the problem faced by the general population will be reduced. No SL government has the guts to take out this large triforces number, because repercussion in the south for political survival will be huge. I dont even dream any SB govt will take the suicidal step to bring down/replace the huge SB triforces form NE. So, what is next??????????????

      “So, what is next??????????????”
I don’t think there is a simple immediate answer to this question. But there may be an answer hiding around us and it is a possibility. This islands history have gone for various changes at various times. SB did not rule whole of this island no more than 75 years in the recent five or ten centuries or even before.
This country is still in a bankruptcy. That means SBs are still depend on others including Tamils living around the world. The Power struggles between Sinhalese Political parties are more than Tamil Political parties in this island. Future will decide the outcome.

The NPP Government has an immediate daunting task of changing the course of Governance. During the election and aftermath, it was said that there would be no political interference in any of the governing machinery, and those at the helm of State functions would be left uninterfered with to perform their duties.

Haven’t we seen today how that “Non-Intervention” is working? A few days back, the Additional Solicitor General Deelipa Peiris said in open courts – ” There are kingdoms established within the State that function on their dictates and decide what is right and wrong. These “Kings” are a law unto themselves and have spread tentacles to grab whatever comes within their reach to establish their comfort zones, ignoring all principles of “Good Governance” for general welfare. This, he said, was when a case against the Commissioner General of Prisons came up in the courts.

This is an eye-opener for the President and the NPP Government.

II – For the last six months, we have seen several of the “Top Functionaries” in the State functions have fallen from grace e.g., (1) The IGP (2) The Deputy Controller of Immigration & Emigration (3) The Commissioner General of Prisons, and one of his deputies. (4) Several high-ranking Police officers have been taken into custody and are on bail pending court cases (5) A Secretary and assistants attached to the Health Ministry are in remand custody. Additionally, there are several investigations launched against bureaucrats holding high positions, and they are slated to be brought under judicial action. All these could be seen if you watch the proceedings of the COPE that are now available on YouTube”.

In addition, there is an outcry against the way the Attorney General’s Department functions, which looks justified in the face of the withdrawals of some of the cases that are pending in courts. One such case was the case against three accused in Lasantha Wickramathunga’s murder. The AG was compelled to “Reinstate” the case.

Now it is time for “NO NONSENSE” management of State Functions. It has begun.

I’ve written enough about the two “MARAs” that annihilated this nation. One is a Medamulana product, and the other is Rev. Malcom Ranjaith, who has always carried the torch for the MaRa et al administration; sometimes, people on this island have no idea why. Rev MaRa has consistently ignored the “ramphant style of corruption” that Rajapakshe has deliberately spread over the course of 15 years. Finally, he supported former fascists and known barbarians by strengthening their power, and he is now a loser. What happened to the promises made by AKD to “Easter Sunday victims” and proper investigation, even though it has been 8 long months since Thambuthegama Deyyo was graciously elected?

I heard on news the other day that the Lotteries Board chairman had been further remanded over ‘misappropriating’ a lap top & a mobile phone. Seems disproportionate considering mega frauds, like the BMW import fraud, are not being investigated. In the case of BMW, if I am not mistaken, a customs director at the time is now the PA to the President. Unless he was also complicit, he should be able to assist in the enquiry (as the saying goes, straight from the horses’s mouth) So, can the squeaky clean NPP come clean with all these fraud allegations & concentrate on the sharks as well?

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9guZC0Hei0

And the late Mr. Kadirgamar (FM of CBK s admin) on multiple occasions when the Sri Lankan war was at its height.

And while some may support the current visit, others who saw the printing of money to Uganda as a cover for Rajapakshes’ covert money laundering schemes will eventually expose the truth. Rajapakshes’ looting of the state is not secret, but their interpretation of Ugandan funds was a huge lie, as evidenced by Tilvin’s stories about collecting between $1 and $2 billion USD per month from the Sri Lankan diaspora.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bMrh009xeM&t=9s

This speaks volumes about the men’s basic understanding of the realities of the diaspora community.

According to reports, AKD has a basic degree in physical science from Kelaniya University, but he appears to be completely clueless about numbers Why?

This is the reason why people have publicly stated that while the Pope’s bulletproof car is worth not even half a million dollars, former leaders have spent one to two million dollars on their own cars.

Their flagrant lies ought to have some boundaries. With the backing of the mlecha media, many of them still deceive the naive majority. What a country?

Shamefulness is higher than any other title humans may wear, however this is not evident in both the incumbent president, aka AKD, and the Mihinthale Fake Monk.
The man who, like no other, declared that the crook’s final refuge is temple worship is acting as if he has been reborn; how can AKD wear his suit in front of civilized leaders in Europe? Is this not a betrayal of our nation?

This is undoubtedly a big shoe for you. It is unnecessary to mention that a person who does not understand the fundamentals of life would ignore what is going on before our eyes today. You openly support Donald Trump, the world’s political clown.
        Brothers, sons, and their henchmen robed the state with the direct support of JVP, Pingutharaya communities of varied religions and other racial parties;
what else can we expect from a man whose person is nothing more than his “sharp rhetorics in public”?

He can only embarrass the country by committing public faux pas like unbuttoning or incorrectly buttoning his shirt, not dressing appropriately when travelling abroad, wiping sweat from his face and smearing the podium table, and attempting to clear his mouth with eatrests, among other things. This is simply not the civilised behaviour of someone who should be in charge of any country; even African and Latin American tribal leaders would have been more prepared. He should send Dr. Harini Marasooriya to represent the country abroad if he is unable to comprehend that he is now the president of all 23 million island nation.

          cont.
The next embarrassing public blunder from our JVP leader, who appears to be oblivious to the repercussions of making inflated allegations about former men, will be bloating or vomiting while travelling abroad.

Given the pervasive corruption and high-level crimes that happen almost every hour, we can all understand why people initially elected the 3%-party to run this nation.Even though people are prone to being duped when they look back, they did what they could.

It will be another El Salvador if new legislation is not implemented to prevent them. What “new law reforms” have they implemented despite having a parliamentary majority, even though it lasted for roughly eight months?

Why bring Buddhism into this discussion? Buddha renounced power. The impermanence of power is a historical truth. All empires have faded in time. Buddhism is about the impermanence of life. In any case, Sinhala Buddhism extols power. Its priests exercise it in the crudest form preaching hatred towards others. Its politicians profit through chauvinistic spread of hatred towards other human beings. Vishwamitra need not bring in a noble religion and its precepts to discuss the exercise of power in Sri Lanka. Abuse of power has to be restrained by the people. A people, subverted through politicised religion cannot perform this function. For seventy five years they have turned a blind eye to the chauvinist politician who has thumped the Buddhist card.

Cicero, they “turned a blind eye” to Buddhist card which can never join Siyam and Malwattu nikayas with Amarapura nikaya. What else to try.?

DTG, oddly you have stated something quite accurate. The caste issue is a relic of the Sinhala Buddhist’s Hindu past. Interestingly you find the same problem in South India where there are even separate graves for Christians of the Brahmin caste.

At the moment, all we hear from our motherland is negative. Despite having travelled to Europe on taxpayer money, our Thambuththegama deyyo is making a public faux pas by refusing to appear “on June 12th” and instead staying in his secret den for unknown reasons.

With the Tamil diaspora residing in Germany (reports say it is nearly 80k), some people believe it should be a “close door” arrangement. In Germany, where law and order is comparable to Singapore’s or even more stringent against their illicit activities, it is difficult for any diaspora community to do what they believe is right, in contrast to our ignorant set to air.

At the same time, a phoney monk is alleged to have had sex with a well-known actress and to have threatened her with videos that questioned the actress’s husband’s employment overseas. Overall, there are more dark clouds in the sky above the island nation than there are in the opposite direction. What became of the “PUNARUDAYA” that they proclaimed for this country led by PINGONA (mercy cow)?
