An Election Like No Other: Ovations & Denunciations

By Kumar David

Prof. Kumar David

In 12 day the country would have to congratulate Anura Kumara Dissanayake as President and hurl imprecations at an electoral processes which opened a perilous pathway for Sajith or possibly Ranil to stake a claim to the presidency. For impenetrable reasons however Sumanthiran decided to support Sajith (as did a miniscule left entity known as the ULF). Why Sumanthiran backed Sajith, instead of the NPP, is difficult to understand. It is true that the NPP/ JVP has not issued a guarantee that it will hold regular parliamentary and presidential elections, nor has it promised to respect the independence of the judiciary, nor has the NPP/JVP made a commitment to the devolution of power to Tamil areas. Nevertheless, from a Tamil perspective Sajith is worse on all counts as he lives in the pocket of the Sinhala-Buddhist clergy.

Whether Anura wins a clear mandate to the presidency or not another bunch of constitutional snares open up before him. This pertains to the abolition of the Executive Presidency (EP). The NPP and the JVP are committed to the abolition of the EP and backsliding on this matter will all but provoke a rebellion in the ranks of the JVP. (I need to say that, notwithstanding the large rallies and gatherings that it has mobilised, if Anura fails to win the presidency, there will be chaos in the ranks of the JVP as on the previous occasions on which the JVP was defeated).

To move on, if Anura (or anyone else) fails to win an absolute majority on the initial count, the second and third preferences of all the candidates taking part in the election are counted and added to the votes polled by the candidates themselves.  Then the candidate with the largest number of total votes in declared elected. That’s it! I am spelling this out in very simple words because we need to see what was in that crafty devil and personification of evil, JR’s, mind. He calculated that if the UNP candidate did not make 50% on first count, then voters of all other candidates would pick the UNP offering as their second or third choice. That JR thought was the standing of the UNP as a “national” party. Therefore the UNP man would win the election by “crook” if not by “hook”. JR himself was president from 1978 to 1989 and his man Ranasinghe Premadasa from 1989 to 1983. Deaf-and-blind (DB) Wijetunga was able to hang on through 1993-1994. Then the storm broke and Chandrika stormed to power in 1994 and remained till 2005 followed by “war winner” Mahinda, PIssu Sira and then 69-lakh Gota in 2019 to 2022. (JR died of colon cancer in November 1996 but the malicious executive presidential system that he crafted persists to this day).

Crisis on economic issues starts on the very next day after the September 21, 2024 presidential election no matter who wins. In truth the fun and games will be more manifest if Anura wins; more pronounced than the constitutional issues of annulling the executive presidency that I have mentioned previously, will be fulfilling economic expectations. Political expectations will be quickly drowned when wolf comes to the door. I say fairly confidently that it the NPP/JVP that will be the victim of exaggerated economic expectations on the morrow of the elections. This can be tricky because of the comparative expectations of the silent vote that will be stirred up by Ranil. There is a silent expectation that Ranil would have been able to keep petrol prices lower. There is also a perception that the IMF would make international borrowing terms less stringent. The Governor of the Central Bank is playing along and encouraging these expectations. The economy may nail the NPP/JVP not on the day after it wins the elections but perhaps on the third or fourth day after victory.

The decision to back Sajith Premadasa was made after carefully studying Ranil’s election manifestos. Sajith and Anura.

Out of the three Sajith promised full implementation of 13A, holding of PC elections, a new constitution, global conference of investors to develop Northeast. In the 2019 presidential elections, Sajith secured 312, 722 (83.86%) votes.

As for Anura, the past record of JVP bordered on racism pure and simple. JVP recruited Sinhalese youths to the armed forces, in 1986 went to the SC and obtained a judgement that annulled the temporary merger of Northeast provinces. It also opposed the T Tom agreement tooth and nail. Moreover, there is no direct reference to the implementation of 13A except to say they will bring a new constitution that will ensure equality before the law and no discrimination.

As soon as Ranil came to power, he on his own declared he will implement 13A fully before 4th February, 2023. He reneged on his promise. Now he says he will implement 13A sans police powers. These summersaults have not endeared Ranil to Tamils, except those who are with him for office and perks. He has lost his credibility with the Tamil people and corruption under him is legendary.

I think Sajith has the better offer to the North/East on paper but it is always a question whether he will walk the talk. When you look at his interaction with the monks, one has serious doubts! Nevertheless, from my experience, Sajith has more support from the poorer sections of Tamils and Muslims, than Anura. However, this seems to be changing among the younger generation.
Tamils are right to be suspicious of Anura. In an interview with the Sinhala BBC service last week, when asked the party’s stance on human rights violations of Tamils and punishment of perpetrators, he replied that it would be the courts that would do any punishing if people were found guilty. He said that the truth and reconciliation process needs to be strengthened and an investigation conducted. Asked whether he thinks human rights of Tamils had been violated, he dodged by saying that this would pre-empt the findings of an investigation. First, anyone with commonsense knows that the human rights of Tamils have been violated in Sri Lanka for decades. Second, he has not hesitated in accusing other politicians of corruption/robbery without them being investigated or tried in court. Double standards?

“I think Sajith has the better offer to the North/East on paper but it is always a question whether he will walk the talk. “

Just before the last presidential elections Sajith also pledged to build 1143 viharas in the North East. Will he now deliver his promise?

I believe people of the North East are queueing up to vote for him as they did last time though Vijayakala Maheswaran is with Ranil yesterday. Unlike last presidential election public relation gimmick Vijayakala Maheswaran hasn’t hired a horse drawn carriage for Ranil this elections.
        Wonder why?

Native, Sajith doesn’t have a convincing record in delivering on his promises, and some of his promises are better not delivered, for the good of the country!
And keep wondering!! I think the people of the North/East are no longer influenced by their leaders – their vote will be scattered among the three ‘main’ contenders and the ‘common’ (?) Tamil candidate. The question is, in what proportion?

            “…‘common’ (?) Tamil candidate.”

What will the Common Tamil candidate prove?
Say if he is elected as president has he got the ability to run the country, fulfilling his responsibilities? Once he is elected will he run away and seek asylum elsewhere, like Gota?

Mummy’s boy Sajith may not have a convincing record in delivering on his promises, however whatever he indicated just before last Presidential elections are being carried out, enforced by functionaries and saffronistas, bankrolled by Diaspora (Sinhala/Buddhists, who do not share the ideals of what the awakened one preached, therefore they are not Buddhists).

Why do people need so many temples, churches, mosques, vihares, …. ?
nimal fernando believes people need as many as places of worships to wash their sins. I do not agree with him.

If it is true, first people should be prevented from sinning.

SP was part of the Good Governance government. What has he done to convince the minorities?
When he lost to GR, he said that he needs to address the interests of the SB majority.
Why pick on the past of the JVP alone?
Do the others have an honourable past?
The FP will have one big job convincing Tamil voters about SP. Chances are that RW could score because the FP backs SP.

KD, this one looks more like a comment to me , than article. So here is a hypothetical question to you. If Ranil, SP or AD get elected, don’t you think among the current lot ( ITAK / TNA ), MS is the only one worthy enough to hire, based on expertise and experience ( purely MERIT ) ). He sure can help in drafting a functional constitution. In my opinion, the only person to consider is Wiggy, who in my opinion has lost credibility, due to too much flip flopping. Less said better about the rest. Regardless of who MS support (except Namal ), others may still consider hiring. As I mentioned , this is hypothetical for the purpose of discussion. Can you think of anyone else worthy other than MS ( in any field ). By the way , did you watch the debate , between Kamala and Con Man.

Will any of the presidential candidates have the ***** to hang if once he is elected:

      1. Champika Ranawake for the alleged hit-and-run accident
      2. Rajapaksa clan for millions of alleged crimes
      3. AKD and his comrades in arms for all sorts of crimes which JVP-NPP yet to plead guilty
      4. Wimal Weerawansa ……. for being himself, ….
      ….

      7. All those Saffronistas and their ***** carriers who pervert(ed) their vocation.
      8. Admiral Sarath Weerasekera for making cringing sound. Should be encourage to renounce his mundane life like his late brother Ven. Buddhangala Ananda Thero
      (Major General Ananda Weerasekara).

      12. Jayasumana for hiding behind Sinhala/Buddhist nationalism, ….
      13. …..
      14. The Tamil presidential common candidate Pakkiyaselvam Ariyanethiran and those who proposed the most stupid postwar action.
      ….
      ….
Will our friend nimal fernando help the future president with selecting and hanging the right persons?

nimal fernando, sorry I won’t be part of the process for the simple reason I am against capital punishment.

Hanging is the easy way out for them ……. let them rot in jail in the filth …… like they did to Wasantha Mudalige, Fonseka, Ranjan R, …….. there’s a well established Kangaroo court precedents in the land to emulate.

Like in the ol’ Blighty, where there is no written constitution …… all what’s there is the precedents to guide …….

Only consolation for Ranil ……. of all his buddies ……. at least Native, is sure to be a constant visitor.

      Yes, Kumar,
      .
Some of the things that have been happening here are so strange that they will not be believed. On the other hand, I have glimpsed some things that have been happening in jails in the Congo that make me realise that it is much worse in such places than it is here.
      .
I’ve been walking round Maharagama, distributing some NPP literature, and talking to people. The response is overwhelmingly favourable to AKD. About the only person who rudely disapproved of me was an English-speaking man of around fifty, who rebuked me in no uncertain terms. This tells most of the story. Those who are reasonably well-off probably want either Sajith or Ranil elected.
      .
There still is some fear of the JVP owing to what happened between 1988 and 1990. It is good that AKD has consistently accepted that; unfortunately, people usually listen to one side only. That goes for me, too!
      .
Preferences? There will be hardly any! Since I will be marking AKD as my FIRST, and since it is inconceivable that he will fall into Third place, my other preferences will not be counted. So, whoever leads after the FIRST count will almost certainly win.

              Dear nimal,
              .
The comment you have made is fair enough, and I have no problem with what you have said here.
              .
Don’t worry; I have far too much respect for you to resent what you have said, and loads of gratitude for the sincere and constructive work that Douglas is doing.
              .
However, I wanted to get my message across to Douglas as clearly as possible. A bit of petulance on my part? May be.
              .
What we are trying to do is sincere. I notice that Douglas has responded, and I have given a Thumbs-Up for his seven word comment that has come in on 14/09/2024.
              .
Douglas has taken it in the right spirit. He ought to have understood that simple observation.
              .
There’s nothing underhand in what oc and NV have said. However, tomorrow morning I want to get legal opinion on what others are doing.

How this scum expects that to happen, when the Treasury didn’t have USD 25 Million to pay shipload of fuel which is itself many millions of USD!!! CERTAINLY, LIKE HIS RUGBY MATCHES!!?? Copy-Book DTJ!!??

That’s the Trump vs Kamala Devi debate. I’m glad that I watched it all, and I saw some of the feedback on it. Kamala easily outdid Trump; yet a close election is still being predicted there. Those who worship “Western Countries”, like the United States, ought to pay heed to the seeming closeness of the vote there.
        .
Trump is rather like Ranil, isn’t he? Those asinine statements of his, like Americans now eating their pet dogs and cats have to be seen to be believed. That such a man should be taken seriously by millions of Americans is in itself an indictment of America.
        .
No missteps by Kamala; if I were to dare add something to what she said, she ought, perhaps, to state that while upholding the right to abortion, it is not something to be encouraged – especially if it is a very late abortion.
        .
And Trump who trumpets morality is the man who has always slept around to the maximum extent possible. Let’s hope that Trump will be delivered a stunning rebuke with a serious falling away of support. Of course, he will, nevertheless, get millions of Republican Party votes, from those who want to keep the party credible, and from those who are “Kapuwoth Rathu” – a-la-Sri Lanka.

Absolutely true. The gullible voters expect a miracle from the JVP.. The JVP’s rhetoric has already locked them in. The perception they have created is that “corruption” has caused our bankruptcy. Absolute bullshit, of course. Many keyboard warriors claim that the “bond scam” bankrupted the country. All good sound bites for winning elections, but what happens if the IMF decides to hold on to its money? What happens when the JVP goes for a localised economy? When onions hit 750 per kg, sugar hits 900, the USD hits 600, LPG disappears, etc? Call Ranil back?

In fairness, some key steps to alleviate the queues by arranging supplies had been taken before RW took over.
The point that Namal wilfully ignores is how his uncle let the shortages occur.

      .

      1) Even ‘The New York Times’ known to be antagonistic to Donald Trump was compelled to report on 11 August 2024 BEFORE the debate under it’s captioned:
      .

“Atop ABC, a Personal Connection to Kamala Harris”
      .

      https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/11/business/media/abc-debate-dana-walden-kamala-harris.html
      .

“On paper, the potential for a conflict of interest seems obvious: ABC News, the host of next month’s high-stakes presidential debate, falls under the purview of a top corporate executive at Disney who happens to be longtime friends with the Democratic nominee.”
      .

True to form only Trump was fact-checked by the so-called ‘moderators’ David Muir and Linsey Davis. Harris was given a ‘free pass’ for her lies.

AM, only because you addressed directly , I’m compelled to respond. What is your point if there is any. If you had watched the full debate ( both the first and second ), it’s obvious, a candidate , when asked about immigration or economy, is expected to address their position. Instead Trump went on name calling, alternate facts, telling Haitians are eating neighbors pets, praising former Hungarian Dictator , imaginary threats, …….blah…..blah. The biggest draw back of Trump , is that he cannot stay on the subject. Even the Republicans acknowledge this fact. It doesn’t matter whether it’s NBC, ABC, CBS or Fox. Candidates are asked a question, and the time is their’s to use. Connecting individual performance to these networks is childish. Biden performed miserably in the first, is that a network bias. By the way , how sure are you that Trump doesn’t have any memory / cognitive deficits ?? (Reagan, and Carter too were suffering, in such chronic condition usually progressing over years, not even the experts can give the exact onset. ( my father had ) . Cognitive decline alone is not a criteria, to pronounce a person incompetent. ( in that case many elderly / geriatric leaders currently in power, will be considered incompetent).

“Weaponization, cover-ups” , funny that you quote exact Trump’s vocabulary . Anyone who commit a crime is legally liable. It can be President, preacher, CEO of a company, Hedge fund owner , Senator or a Law maker / Congressman . No crime is big or small. The question is whether Trump can use his immunity as an excuse or not ?? The guy who facilitated the cover- up , lawyer Cohen admitted to and was send to prison. Kamala, was the State Attorney, Senator before VP. Trump by birth is a cheat, corrupt, criminal, racist, and all in all , an absolute low life. What excuse, for him to make racist comments towards Obama / Kamala. Trump was impeached twice, convicted, has hundreds of pending cases , and wants people of his kind to believe in “weaponization”. Sorry that I will not be responding on this, anymore. Say if cases are filled as told, against Rajapaksas or RW , is that considered weaponiztion ?? Gotha called it victimization and closed all pending cases. What do think Trump will do if get elected ?

AM, when you make a sweeping comment about Obama, Pelosi, Clintons, Schumer, Kamala and Biden ( all Democrats) as CONS, shows whether you’re holding a brief or a candle. When you’re so vocal about Bond Scam, that’s yet to be legally proved but happy to dismiss Trump crimes as ” weaponization ” , says a lot. Most of the judges hearing Trump cases are conservative picks. I don’t think just because Trump is a a criminal, the rest like Pence, Vance ( a racist , not criminal ), Trump supporters in Senate / House are all criminals. If Trump is a victim as he and his ilk project, why is that many of his own party members unprecedentedly endorsed Kamala, saying their conscience doesn’t allow, to support Trump anymore. Didn’t Trump continue promoting ” stolen election” BS in this debate, when Republicans as a whole ( party ), rejected such lies. Not holding a brief , must be Lanka style ………. LOL.

When people keep parroting “Cognitive Decline “, I believe, the matter is best left to experts. WH has it’s team of doctors and others, to check on such matters. I as a physician, attended court hearings, related to patient’s competency in declining or accepting treatments. Usually in cases with Mental, physical or both issues, conflicting social / family issues, active substance abuse, parental custody of a child or an elderly, to assess validity of signed DNR (do not resuscitate) , holding or treating a patient in an emergency without consent, treating physician can be called to give their medical / expert opinion. Yet, I will be reluctant to comment on a person’s capability based on cognitive decline, whom I have never seen or tested. But I have a question to those who parrot, do they think cognitive decline is any worse compared to conditions like severe personality defects, character pathology ( narcissism, anti social, hysterical ) paranoid / grandiose delusional disorders . Or is it worse than racism, criminality, cheating, apathy, total lack of remorse………..

                  .

                  1) The only issue in this instance is the CLEAR ‘Conflict of Interest’ of ABC News which hosted the debate and the DISGRACEFUL conduct/bias of the so-called moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis who gave Harris a ‘free pass’ for her LIES. Instead of addressing this you are meandering on other issues which itself can be challenged.
                  .

                  2) ‘The New York Times’ itself reports Harris as stating “In many ways, Dana and Matt are responsible for my marriage”. You cannot be unaware that Dana Walden is the BIG BOSS of the moderators.
                  .

                  3) You also ignore the opinion of well known CNN presenter Fareed Zakaria (not a Trump fan):

Cannot it be plausibly speculated that CNN belatedly threw Biden under the bus at the bidding of Dem Party leaders who were panicking that Trump would be the likely winner in a confrontation with Biden?

Stop being your usual moronic self, AM. Conflicts of interests due to friendships occur all the time, and that is why there is a thing called recusal on certain decisions. Why on earth will anyone give the time of day to a monstrous liar and utterly depraved creature like Trump is beyond me. Perhaps they are as utterly depraved as their cult leader despite claims of not holding a brief. And the same arrested moral and intellectual development as their cult leader.

    Song: Confusion -Electric Light Orchestra.
Song reminds me of Sri Lanka when I was there in school in the early 80’s. Heard the it on Radio Ceylon and then stood in a queue and went on a crowded bus. Fellows looked like this song, with hopelessness in their eyes. (went to the ELO concert on Monday…..just wonderful!).

Ramona…….Hopelessness……in the Eighties I saw a Sinhala girl at a bus stop on Havelock Road. Five foot nothing, her cheap printed skirt swaying in the wind above brown unshaven legs and shabby Bata slippers. She clutched an old English comic, obviously to show the world that she knew the language, and a tawdry umbrella to ward off the heat of the day. She was probably a graduate…better educated than I…..and I thought…..’How sad, poor girl what chance in hell has she got in this country?’ And she has thousands of brothers and sisters. The image has stayed with me all my life.

I am of the view that Ranil Wickremasinghe will have a clear mandate. Sajith’s father did many worst jobs when the Indo-Sri Lankan peace treaty was signed. Didn’t Sridharan know that Sajith’s father was instrumental for the attack on Rajiv Gandhi by a Naval rating and that the eyes of about several thousands of murdered Sinhalese JVPers were removed and sold them to Japan? Can anyone who live on such ill-earned money stay idle? These news appeared in a Singapore Newspaper. Majority of the politicians knew that his son, Sajith also would have the same quality. Anura would not comply with Federalism or the implementation of the 13th Amendment Act. But Ranil will take steps parallel to the 13th Amendment under the guise of economic development and also signalled about giving Police Powers. Ranil has the assistance of India, America, Japan and Western countries. Mahinda Rajapaksa and Sajith cannot be trusted with what they will do with the underworld. Meanwhile, some of Sajith’s supporters have secret dealings with Ranil.

Many common people are losing faith in the Tamil party. As far as the Muslims are concerned, even though they are called brothers, they do not want the merger of the North-Eastern provinces. Here is where the Western democratic countries and India should focus more attention. Hisbulaah, Rishard Badurdeen and even Rauff Hakim are strong supporters of Sajith Premadasa. There is a possibility that these leaders are trying to revitalize the Islamic Terrorist Organizations with the assistance of Sajith Premadasa, but without the knowledge of Sajith Premadasa. This is impossible with Ranil Wickremasinghe. As Ranil supports Tamils, 90% of Eastern Province Muslims support Sajith. Although Tamils say for a Tamil Common candidate, the supporters of a Tamil general candidate did not announce an alternative solution to the 13th Amendment Act. Sridharan is selfish because he opposed the diversion of water from Iranimadu pond to Jaffna because it will become the central of India in Jaffna. The meeting on supporting the Tamil general candidate with the participation of many ex-militants raises doubts in the minds of the Tamils as they do not want a war again. More than that, if Ranil had been openly supported by the Tamils as a whole, they are certain to get economic freedom in the first place which will pave way for Tamil expatriates as well as the local Tamils for investments. Later, there will be possibilities of gradually acquiring political rights.

Kumar David relies on what politicians promise, as rationale for parties to join each other. No, politicians can promise things like they have been doing for many decades, but they don’t deliver. So, the next best thing is to watch what they do. If a candidate surrounds himself with established political criminals who have cheated and lied all their adult lives, that means that the candidate has no principles or moral values, and will gather anyone. Such opportunists cannot be trusted. So, look for candidates who abide by strict discipline in who they join up with. Certainly, reject the criminals! It is now or never..!
