An Elite-Led Janabalaya Didn’t Engage The Masses

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

The video of the youngster, fully intoxicated and fallen by the wayside pains my mind and reminds me of the callousness and heartlessness of  projects like this led by politicians for the politicians. How could one human do this to another?”

Elite-Led

The Janabalaya Kolombata campaign of the JO on 5th September was essentially a mass -ferrying of humans in buses from outstations. Organized by Namal Rajapaksa and other JO leaders, the project was led and driven by a Mahinda Rajapaksa elite or coterie and remained that way until it came to a lack-lustre closure with the former President himself making an aimless and senseless speech from a vehicle. One could observe, Mahinda was tired and jaw-dropped.

It is hard to sustain a project by cajoling and rewarding people to get into buses and remain crammed up like cattle being transported. Outstation people find it uncomfortable to be away from their homes like this and let off in Colombo to fend for themselves until brought back.

If a mass protest were to be successful that has to generate from the masses themselves who perceive a compelling necessity to get mobilised and to sacrifice for a cause. An individual’s choice is generally based on a hidden processing of costs and benefits. We observed that in Arab Spring. Janabalaya Kolombata was a far cry from from Arab Spring. The inability to comprehend the difference in the two situations led to a wasteful exercise. The Daily Mirror editorial referred to Mahinda as  a ‘sharp thinker.’ Oh my God! What sharpness was that?

A well-known Sri Lankan web editor located in London sensed the situation very well when he remarked on Facebook on the eve of Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Janabalaya: “I am going to sleep. Please call me if the government falls”!

Sources

One could notice what happened visibly from the numerous videos transmitted instantaneously by mobile cameras by  those on the ground. Thanks to mobile phones, these days one can comment from far away of the events occurring anywhere in the world. One could even sense the emotions of people! Supplemented by independent evidence coming from other observers over there, an analysis can be completed with reasonable veracity.

The Mission

The project had a serious mission to accomplish. Mahinda promised that the masses coming from different directions in the island will converge in Colombo and force the government to quit. “We would surround Sri Lanka’s capital city, camp in the city and stay put until the government is evicted.”

In effect the threat represented a serious breach of the constitution, which Mahinda had sworn to abide by. Our constitution lays down the procedure for a change in government and a forced physical eviction by the masses isn’t one of them.  On the score of this breach itself the government had every right to ban the procession and the meeting and even to arrest the leaders including the former President.

Government didn’t do it because they never took the event seriously. Ranil Wickremesinghe, savvy with his vast experience, sharp with his intelligence and controlled with emotional intelligence of a high order, joked in Parliament: “Please come. You are welcome so long as you do not damage property or disrupt the lives of other citizens.” When the procession finally did enter Colombo and circuited around Lake House the Prime Minister remarked: “ You can stay as long as you want. I know you will have to go back to your homes. Stay, and return as soon as possible because the government will not fall.”

The promised outcome was never ever in sight.

Size of the Crowd

There is no denying that the crowds were big but there isn’t any agreement about the size of that attendance. I guess that the selection of the Lake House roundabout as meeting centre could not have been made if the crowds had been huge like in the last May Day of the JO. In the Lake House roundabout area even a crowd of around three thousand can impress.

A noticeable spill into outside areas was not observed in the videos I saw. The JO claim of hundreds of thousands seems a definite exaggeration.  JO Member of Parliament Aluthgamage, who shines by his low incredibility, made that claim. Some videos transmitted in the internet showed the May Day Galle face audience in order to mislead. However, Galle face is easily identified.

On the other hand, Chathuri Dissanayake, writing to the Financial Times Daily FT (96/9), reported: “Nearly 3,000 loyalists of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday occupied the Lake House Roundabout in Fort and held a ‘sathyagraha’ after the ‘Janabalaya Kolombata’ protest march organised by the Joint Opposition (JO) was wrapped up.”

Poor Coordination and Pathos

Some videos taken and transmitted through mobile phones indicated that parts of crowds had gone to other spots since no clear instructions had been given. The event  had not been properly coordinated.

The missing hand of Basil Rajapaksa was conspicuous. Namal Rajapaksa is said to have been the chief organizer as apparently the former President wanted him to show his metal in order to establish his credibility for Presdiential candidacy. Namal hardly qualifies for that responsibility. Namal will have to go back to the working board and learn his sums.

Scattered incidents were reported of abandoned souls fallen down dead drunk. The crowds were given milk packets to drink along their march. Several are reported to have entered hospital after drinking the milk. Wimal Weerawansa counter accuses that the UNP had distributed spoilt milk! Knowing Wimal, we can let the ball pass to the wicket keeper.

One youngster from Hatton, 38 years old, had a heart attack and died.

Drowning the pathos of souls lost in drink, fallen by the wayside had been the dominantly celebratory mood of large blocks of people who kept dancing and merrymaking with the Papara Papara band fully in action. Obviously the masses who attended hadn’t taken the event with the seriousness of a rebellion to overthrow the government. They had a real go at it and returned home.

The roads were full of rubbish and Municipal officials would have had a hard time the following day cleaning and mopping up.

Spirit at The Rally

This is the thing I want to say: The spirit of the people hardly evinced a seriousness or tension that rebels would necessarily exhibit. In general terms, there was no mood of potential violence, urgency  or anger noticed. Nobody seemed keen to tear down the government- except the organizing elite-the Rajapakse family and cohorts.

This is why Janabalaya could never achieve its goal of overthrowing the government. This is why it did not evidently involve broad mass participation. The residents in Colombo themselves largely stood aloof like spectators observing a happening. Many were, however, bitter about their inability to get about normal business. Parents did not send kids to school for fear of threats to the latter’s safety. Offices largely remained closed for business. Normal civil life had come to a halt.

All for no purpose and to make space for a mad event!

A Lesson for Government

I like to pause here and raise a question for the government: Should these kinds of protests be allowed to be carried out this way with disruptive impact on peace-loving citizens? Should there be no preconditions and regulations  laid down before permission is granted? For instance, the organizers had not announced the routes that were planned. This is clear violation. Routes to be taken must be announced. This  would enable the police to be in readiness  to ensure the protection of both protestors and civilians simultaneously. No government can carry on in this fashion and the whole rough business drives the wrong messages to business circles. The government wasn’t overthrown but the government loses its  hold  in the public imagination in some unspeakable fashion.

Why Janabalaya Remained largely trivial

There is also a lesson for the Joint Opposition: The latter got to consider why Janabalaya did not engage the population at large. The answer is simple: they people perceived no reason to join in. Janabalaya did not excite the public imagination as it was perceived as something done by a Rajapakse elite for their benefit. Even the  large  numbers of supporters that Mahinda Rajapakse still has in the country did not get stimulated  by any prospect of the government getting ousted. The fundamental thing is that this government is in no sense an oppressive government ever ready to crush dissent. One of the principal achievements of Yahapalanaya is the liberal atmosphere and freedom of the individual that it has provided. There are no more stories of hit squads roaming about to pick and to punish arbitrarily.

I am sure, the organizers were inspired by the Arab spring. This uprising in the Middle East astonished the entire world when a volcano of human patience erupted there, taking start from Tunisia this wave of change took the neighbouring countries into its folds. In the case of these governments they were monarchies, sheikdoms or some other forms of oppressive dictatorship. Such a situation does not hold in Sri Lanka today. People in our island are conscious that there is a way to throw out an unpopular government. Janabalyas aren’t wanted unless to press for enterprise -level micro demands.

Conclusion

Thus  ended a rally that wasn’t wanted by the people in the first place. The parallel to the Arab Spring stands by contrast and not by any similarity. The video of the youngster, fully intoxicated and fallen by the wayside pains my mind and reminds me of the callousness and heartlessness of  projects like this led by politicians for the politicians.

Nice observation and the analysis done by Shaymon………… There is a BIG FAT reason why the TAX PAYING dumb majority of the citizenry is made to go through these kinds of wasteful dramatic drivels on a daily or frequent basis, in an unbroken chain of events distracting the focus of the population from the more meaningful time and money saving activities that rescues the country as whole, from ever degenerating society. But, the Elites ( The Ruling Elite families who are split into diffrent entities to further their agenda) have a similar type of things designed, engineered and dished put for the gullible masses. No one seems to be having any interest to identify the real reason for the system they control to behave this way which is continuing throughout a span of 70+ years. UNP / SLFP have no interest to destroy the Rajapases as the whole world knows what CRIMES they did. This is a battle they are waging against the people….The War by the Elites on the Tax Paying Citizens……

They cleaned the area they occupied after the protest which was seen by everybody. Go and see the local optician.
Oh Mayor Rosy Senanayake really? Before sending invoices to others, she should send two invoices to “herself” to reimburse government money wasted by spending Rs. 5.7 million for refurbishment of washrooms in her official residence in March and again in August for wasting Rs. 8.5 million by offering the cleaning contract to a private company of her personal choice for two years when she had CMC cleaners for the job.

Champa represents the gulliable gawky people that took part in that Jana Balaya Ralliy.

Not contaminated milk packets, but Rajpakashe asuchi packets could well be distributed to the gathering. That can then help them healing further.

That 58 lacks voted for Rajaakshes should be not just rural people but but also some folks with somewhat knowledge about the life.

In the gathering, we got to know only very uneducated people. Can anyone please explain me why was that ?

              Reason may be

              1. They are all brainwashed by the lies being spread to them.

              2. Media business men to be blamed not having published facts and figures about Real nature of Rajakshes.

              3. I believe, so long these people stay idiotic only Meeharakas in JO can get elected.

This was UNP’s well planned work obviously. This isn’t the first time JO brought people to Colombo. How come this was never seen before?
UNP losers have set up their goons to offer liquor mixed with either some strong elements or sedatives to make people tipsy/sleepy in one shot. I’ve never seen drunk people sleeping on the ground enmasse like this.
And the two idiots displayed pole-dance on the top of a lamp post, cannot be villagers. They should be UNP-paid rilawas.
Then there was a case of distributing milk packets which made people hospitalized for allergic reactions. A slip of the tongue of a UNP MP proved that they were “expired” milk packets. Until then nobody knew that for sure. (Thanks Mujibur.)
Not only that, there were the usual, paid, UNP May-Day signature women dancers from Colombo who dance to the same tune for decades. MR’s side never used such women.
Mr. former President, your young MPs in the forefront, with the backing of seniors, showed Jana Balaya (people’s power) by bringing close to 175,000 to Colombo which could have strengthened by women participants in equal number, if it wasn’t a day+night protest.
Let’s show Jana Virodhaya (people’s protest), preferably via a “One-day Paada Yatra” to Colombo followed by a show-stopper. There is lot on our plate again. You don’t need of anything. People will take care of everything. Just tell people the route and the exact gathering place in advance which is important. People will come voluntarily and the onlookers on the roadside will provide food (like last time.) Street protest is in your blood. You just need to blow two whistles to gather people. (I usually write to Wimal. But now that you are ACTIVELY LEADING the JO, I can write to you direct.)

          Steve
I got the number, as Mahindananda said over 3000 buses came with people to Colombo (including 700 buses from Kurunegala.)
I don’t remember the exact number he said, 3000 something.
          This is how I calculated:-
The standard number of seats in a standard coach is 56 seats.
          3000 buses X 56 seats = 168,000
And some buses were packed with people even standing. So I added another 7,000. (7 people standing X 1000 buses = 7,000)
          The total is 175,000.
It should be definitely more than 175,000 as I didn’t add other people who took part in the protest march voluntarily.
Moreover, the former President said that some people came to his house to take part even the following morning thinking that others had stayed overnight. I didn’t even add those numbers.
For your information, it is extremely rare if I go by what others say. I analyse it by myself and come to my own conclusion as you see in my simple explanation.

You are only going by what that rogue Mahindananda said, and you are naïve to believe it the same way you believe all what the King says. Where were these 3,000 buses parked ? And how did the people get from these buses to Fort. At least for once please use your common sense.

I happened to be in Kurunegala that day and i saw it with my own eyes, the total number of buses were 27 ;moreover , those buses were numbered and parked in a row in front of Jayarathna Herath;s house , i just don’t understand how could some one lie like this in a public forum ? 700 buses ? get your head examined Champa !

I didn’t lie about 700 buses. I got it from “Ada Derana”. This is the link.
              .
              http://www.adaderana.lk/news/49817/700-buses-set-off-from-kurunegala-for-jana-balaya-rally
              .
On the other hand, Jayaratne Herath is just one man. If one man sent 27 buses, how many buses do you think Johnston sent? And there are over 100 people in Kurunegala who could send more than 27 buses each, filled with people for Mahinda. The number 700 is nothing.
You may not be aware, the government sources said 2200 had entered Colombo on that day. As everybody knows it should be at least 1000 or more than that.

Breath or Breast: Wannihami, I am an enthusiastic fan of detective stories. In many of these, the culprit cannot resist the temptation of returning back to the crime scene to see for himself what is going on. The questions in his mind are: How much progress has been made by the Police? What clues have they found? Has he forgotten to remove any crucial clues from the crime scene that may point to him?
            .
Not only that. The culprit mixes with the crowd asking questions and making comments. If it is a serial killing, he would say, ‘Oh My God! How many more are they going to kill before they catch him?’ ‘ They are cheer leaders for such a cowardly, desperate, group of people’! ‘How about the CCTV footage’?
            .
Then to pass the suspicions on someone else, he would approach the detectives and say, was so and so seen in this area in recent days? Wait and see. What goes out may come back. Breaking news: The clues have been sent to a highly reliable analysis company. (Ha! Ha! As if our Police cannot do it!)
            .
Your behavior has been similar wannihami. Why? Is it because you are part of the infamous Aralu gang? You are telling us “Hold your breath mates”. I was wondering whether you were telling the cow victims to “Hold your breasts mates” because, after all, they gave the milk and someone cowardly and desperate put Aralu in it.
            .
Wannihami, if you are guilty, you may run. But you cannot hide.

            Wimal was correct!
Edwin Rodrigo’s comment down is perfectly match with Mujibur’s behaviour.
            .
            1. He came to the scene where protesters were.
            2. Checked what others say about the crime – in this case; poisoned milk case.
            3. Made a comment, specifically about the milk case.
            4. Gave his observation and then conclusion that they were “expired milk packets.”
            5. Then tried to pass the blame on others – in this case; organizers.”
            .
            Edwin is right for once. He says;
            1) “…the culprit cannot resist the temptation of returning back to the crime scene to see for himself what is going on. The questions in his mind are: How much progress has been made by the Police? What clues have they found?”
            2) “Not only that. The culprit mixes with the crowd asking questions and making comments.”
            3) “Then to pass the suspicions on someone else, he would approach the detectives and say, was so and so.”
            MUJIBUR.

colostrum: Champa and wannihami, Assuming that what you say above is true, what about the speedy dispatch of victims in 1900 Ambulances. Today, Ranil specifically mentioned the 1900 ambulances in his own inimitable style, with a shadow of smile in the corner of his mouth. Don’t you think it is fateful that the guys marched in buses (marching in a bus – an invention of Namal), were offered milk contaminated with a rare poison, which was gleefully consumed by them, followed by severe diarrhea that made them purge like Mt. Vesuvius in full frenzy – not to mention unbelievably smelly – and then someone called the 1900 ambulances (don’t blame me. I did not) and they were all taken to hospital in those despicable vehicles supplied by Indian conspirators. This would be an unforgettable experience for all who were there including those who distributed the milk.
              .
Breaking News! Tests show that the milk was contaminated with a rare and extremely powerful poison called colostrum, second in toxicity only to the nerve agent used by Russians in Stratford.
              .
Champa, the bad news is that the lab may have to check your mammary glands for traces of the poison. As far as I am concerned – to hell with the poison. Right now, all that I am interested in is your mammary glands. It is going to be amusing if they do not find your mammary glands. It is going to be much more amusing if they DO find your mammary glands. Perhaps that explains the shadow of smile in the corner of the mouth of Ranil.

      Mr Jaysinghe,

      thanks for your article.

But I truly believe, the kind of rallies are no means belonging to the protest catergory because, those rural men and women would do anything and everything for a free rice packet + a drink.

I will bet you – if anyone would hold an opinion poll enquiring the average knowledge of the people – on ongoing issues in the country, it will become clearer, people have been made them like over the year to get their motives done.

People have no whatsoever knowledge on the politcs being played inthe country. These are aboslultely vote grabing events.

Balawathies, Piyadasas, Siripalas coming from rural livelyhoods would never have the chance to see it around in Colombo. THe cost of living has become and issue in the countr yover the years with so called new developments projects being introduced to Lanka and like minded countries such as Angola, Kenya and vietnam.
Even in India, people would join you for a gatthering easily, no matter their family life would have been stuck by that.
Like for example hat young bus conductor from Nuwara eliya died in the rally, do you think have the basic knowledge about local politcs : No. They just get caught by predatory politcians of Rajapkashe nature. His is the average mind set of the people who joined the march. The manner they behaved themselves looked as if they were asked to enjoy cricket match or the like.

      Shyamon Jayasinghe ,

RE: An Elite-Led Janabalaya Didn’t Engage The Masses

” The fundamental thing is that this government is in no sense an oppressive government ever ready to crush dissent. One of the principal achievements of Yahapalanaya is the liberal atmosphere and freedom of the individual that it has provided. There are no more stories of hit squads roaming about to pick and to punish arbitrarily.”

The Rajapaksas have shown their cards, and the cards are weak. They want to come back to power, and the people are not enthusiastic. Those people with common sense will notice this, and hopefully this is one of the last Hurrah’s of MaRa MaRa Chatu MaRa Amana Mara DhaushaNa MaRa and his cronies.

      You should have titled it

A Crooks -Led Janabalaya, Horunge Rasthiyaduwa, Engaged Only the Crooks, Cronies and Drunks.

      But…….

The so called ‘Jana bala’ protest staged on September 5 th by the corrupt and crooked Rajapkse family with a view to ‘baptize’ Namal Rajapkse as the future leader , as well as to frighten the judges who are hearing the cases against the countless rogues including the Rajapakses of the corrupt Rajapakses’ nefarious decade turned out to be a damp squib. Like how it started from nowhere it ended there without achievement of any aim or objective . This protest which was better known as a ‘rogues for rogues ‘ campaign or ‘Horunge Rasthiyaduwa’ while promising , ‘to overthrow the government tomorrow’ turned out to be a total fiasco.

if any unbiased journo would interview the man found fallen on the floor why he was brought to the capital
He would not say anything that will support to anyone
      1. The reason, these uneducated people living in rural corners are the prey for Rajapkashes for that long on

2.These highly abusive politcians are thirsty of returning to power. Then only they can block investigating cases which people would not disagree – the high profile crimes any Rajapkshes would have done deliberately.

      3. And high profile crimes that some ministers have committed not knowing why
      4. Gotabaya today have the audcity to ask – the sluggish economy is becuase of his money grabs taken for building RAJAPKASHE memorial or anything else…
alone the bugger to see that way- proves how highly abusive mind set the bugger should have.
Economy was sluggish towards the end of 2014. It was at the end of Rajakashes.
That was the reason ballige putha to risk the election 2 years before its offical termination.
But now for there sake, they have the trust to say so – can you imagine?
Besides, the grace periods of all huge loans ended with the start of new govt.
The situation of the current govt was like covering bills and installments of all the high loans made abusively by former goons. They never took care of them but enjoyed.
Latter is no open to the people since current men believe it s them to cover it by any means.
Just loads of all high shits mountains the ballige putha et al left to be cleared by the current govt – while facing all various other issues.
It is very unfair to attack current men not concering all these bits properly.

    Always Brilliant Shaymon,

Talking of Arab Spring will never happen in Srilanka, Because Arab’s do not consume alcohol and its forbidden.
The rally was to boost up NR and tharunyata hetak headed by Nithya Senani

      Oh yeah Shaymon and Yohan
Where were you two when UNP government tried to intoxicate the entire nation by trying to keep bars open until mid night and lifting the ban which was in place since 1950s on selling liquor to women and employing them in bars???
Further, UNP tried to make beer popular among the younger generation by reducing its price. Mangala even said beer is a better choice for school children than soft drinks!! Fortunately the entire country including Maha Sangha showed one of their strongest protests against this and the President stopped both.
Where were you then? In deep slumber???
The organizers of the Jana Balaya DIDN’T offer booze. It was a premeditated action by UNP losers through their goons.

Shyamon knowing recent Trump experience you know very well about “crowd attendance” in view of a crooked politician. This is the person who is claimed to be true patriot, savior of the country and constitution. But what was in mind was to hold the city at ransom. (Code Blue , We need Dr. Pandeniya to perform his test stat on this individual) .But to do that you need real supporters and not the ones who came for free bees.. You saw that in Thailand where two major parties(yellow/red) almost equally backed by their followers striking for months and closing all access to the capital and there by bringing governance to halt. Not the Lankan crap where you swear and scream in foul language for a bottle of Kassipu / arrack and do the same or even better when offered a bottle of cheap scotch by the opposition.Poor MR,s Arab spring or the Thailand moment turned out to nothing but a usual booze session(Lankan style) followed by passing out of few people.

Nobody said they were going to organize an Arab Spring. Your creative mind is amazing, isn’t it?
We are definitely going for a Thailand type protest marches next year if the government didn’t hold the Presidential Election on time. There is no need to do it now. And there is no need to organize anything. People will come to the streets on their own volition, which is the real protest, if the government robbed their right to elect a President of their choice every 5 years.

Current government just stood aside as any interferences by them for the good of people with regards to inconveniences caused or any other freedoms, would be taken as criticism and fuel for the JO to speak about and attack with their misleading, condescending and inaccurate information shared through media.. Most the people who attended this came for a night out in the city without no real goal or idea on what this hooo haa would achieve minus the general subject of Topping the government cause our taxes and cost of living is going up.

Cost of living has been on a positive for the better half of this century. There is nothing that can be done to inflation but can be managed by economic measures such as FTA’s and empowering the public sector, which this government has been entertaining. Just need to look at the right places for these improvements.

People were not interested in the Janabalaya Kolombata campaign because they knew it was not about them, but it was all about the Rajapakses and their Mafia. It was primarily to intimidate the government from proceeding with the criminal cases against them which are fast gaining traction. It was the leading members of the previous regime who are facing criminal charges like Ratharang Rohitha, Aluthgamage, Dilan Perera, S.B.Dissanayake, Premajayanth, Pavithra, Rambukwella, Weerawansa, Prasanna Ranatunge, and other unsavoury characters like Lohan Ratwatte, Dilum Amunugama, Gammanpila, and Alahaperuma who were the key organizers in addition to the Rajapaksa clan. Secondly it was about the power struggle within the Rajapaksa dynasty. Why would the common people get excited about this staged hypocrisy? It was Arab Spring only to those who coveted the free ride to Colombo, the rice packet, and the cheap arrack and kassipu. We should feel sorry for them. They were exploited by these criminals, and in the end they were left to fend for themselves, drunk and lost – instead of overthrowing the government and making history.

“The project had a serious mission to accomplish. Mahinda promised that the masses coming from different directions in the island will converge in Colombo and force the government to quit. “We would surround Sri Lanka’s capital city, camp in the city and stay put until the government is evicted.” They have all gone home and the Government still stands. The organizers are still licking their wounds.
The rally failed because all it could offer was recycled garbage.

    • 3

      Steve
What Shyamon said was not true.
MR didn’t (quote) “promise that the masses coming from different directions in the island will converge in Colombo and force the government to quit.” (unquote) What others said was not relevant and should not credit to his account.
The previous day of the “Jana Balaya,” he called for a “peaceful Protest March” and expressed his regrets in advance if any inconvenience was caused to the public.
By saying that the former President controlled the protesters and nobody was dared to go beyond his words.
That is why protesters acted with restraints despite government’s predictions that they would become unruly and cause damages to government properties. The Police Spokesman later attested that there WASN’T a single incident.
If MR didn’t call for a peaceful protest, I don’t know what would have happened as people are sick of this government.
On the other hand, if the former President said that his aim was to topple the government by occupying the Colombo city or outer premises of the Parliament, then Maha Sangha would have come to the streets first.
No matter how much the Maha Sangha, JO MPs or people including myself want, the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is NOT someone for Arab Spring type protests to topple a government. He demanded the government to hold elections if not step down. When he can easily defeat the government through an election, why should he risk people’s lives when the government Ministers and the IGP openly threatened to shoot protesters and inundated Colombo streets with Policemen, loaded guns, water canons and teargas guns?
Anyways, if the government tries to pass an Amendment to abolish Presidency, extend the Parliament or a New Constitution, I don’t think even he can stop an uprising. People will not listen to anyone.

    Horunge Rasthiyaduwa.

Janabalaya Kolambata’ had its own weaknesses. The crowd was certainly not as huge as promised. Confined to a limited part of the city, there was no organised rally for any expressions of political strategy or thinking. The fears of possible violence and major breakdowns in service led to most children not going to school, and most offices closing early to enable easy travel to employees. The organisers settled down to a so-called satyagraha near Lake House, which junction was the focus of action, leading up from the crowded Fort Railway Station area. As the sun went down, and political leaders moved to their five-star comforts, there was certainly a carnival mood. The organisers can take credit for the forehead bands that said where protesters came from, but such credit was lost with the drunken merrymaking, with a ‘satyagrahaya’ becoming a ‘sura-grahaya’.

In SL or the like poor societies, it has been easier predatory politicians to abuse the vulnerablity of the majority. Our societies are poor because not many know what is really going on in the coutry.
Only remedy would be people to be fed with facts and figures through talk shows or the like public discussions.

In my younger days, I hvae noticed women and men danced on the streets, just because they party men just arrived to the villages.
They hd no whatsoever ever knowledge what the election agenda woudl be.
Now after 30 years, all remained the same.

Last time, during my short visit paid to lanka (Feb 2018), I happened to mingle with many coming from various walks of life. And I also talk to Tuk to any other pvt taxi drivers to commuters for my own source of info… THere what came to know is, people s knowledge is very low. Sometimes ones with uni post g degrees still hang on with limited knowledge about southern highway.
They feel as if one of the 7 wonders that srilankens too to have a such 130 km highway within that small island. They have no idea, pverty striken Kenya and Uganda has got over 700 km highway also built by Chinese within last few years.
Nor have they any idea about the high growth rates in once poorest nation of the earth -Ethiopia by today.
And how chinese twisted the leadership of poor countries in order them to achieve their goals. No matter the countries would not be able to make profit for themselves, but to payments shold flow to them irresspective of any hurdles.

The protest march organised by Mahinda family exposed their facemask and those people who were turned towards Mahinda realised the real motive of the family. Most of the people now realised if the power goes back to them the country will be completely destroy and never come back. It is time to focus on the economy and take legal actions on those who robbed the nation since 2006. Mahinda’s populism is sinking day by day and he understands that there is no future for him and he might still continue with his project of creating bloodbath in this soil and the govt should be prepared to face such a threat.

On the contrary former President’s popularity is rising with his active leadership.
He risked his life to come to the street on behalf of people and join the protest march. When he tried to walk with them, everybody had protested and sent him to the vehicle.
At his short speech, he said that the country’s President and Prime Minister could visit Jaffna and deliver speeches criticizing him because he gave them that right by establishing civil governance in the North, which would have touched the core of people.
Of course that is true. It was he who brought peace to the country and the present rulers while reaping the benefits of a peaceful Sri Lanka, going to the extremes to criticize him unfairly.
He was too humble to not mention what he achieved, what he brought to the country. If he talked like this at the last Presidential election, Maithree, Ranil, Anura could never have made people vulnerable with their lies.
The government said they brought “democracy and freedom to people” so that JO could hold protests on streets. I couldn’t suppress a smile. The Yahapalanaya Police made 4 attempts to obtain a restraining order to prevent the protest march entering Colombo and suburb police zones namely; Cinnamon Gardens, Kolpity, Welika and Thalangama!!!!!!
We could have experienced “Yahapalanaya 5-star democracy” had the Police succeeded in their undemocratic actions to suppress people’s right to assembly and right to expression by obtaining restraining orders.

At the last Presidential elections your King kept only recycling one message – the LTTE will come back if he is not elected. That didn’t work. Now he is trying a new card – peace in the north. The war was fought on the battle field and won by SF, not at the Presidents house.

        • 0

          Steve
Of course what the former President said has come true.
Look at North today. Violence, rape, murder and robberies are rampant in the North.
Aava, I, Skundha and another group are terrorizing people with swords, knives and daggers. Some even set fires on houses.
School girls are gang raped. Kindergarten girls are raped and thrown to wells.
          Robberies are also there.
Some rehabilitated former LTTE cadre complained that Muslims Ministers have distributed some 5000 recovered arms and ammunition among Muslim youth. Soon Muslims will start killing Tamils.
Then a huge number of arms, grenades, unused bullets, uniforms tiger symbol, explosives and various other material belonging to LTTE were recovered not only in the North but also in Tamil Nadu.
When the former President comes back to power, everything will be normalized not only in the North, but in the South too.

Whatever you try to back your monster leader, the reality is that most of the Srilankans think he is a fake leader and he only worry’s about himself and his family. You don’t understand the meaning of peace. We all know there was no freedom of speech under his regime and white van was the weapon used to kill the freedom of speech, justice and rule of law. Look at the number of journalists and human rights activists murdered by him. Do you know it is only Mahinda who printed his image in the bank notes while he was in power? He is a greedy pig ignored the good values of humanity.

” send two Thank You notes; one to Mahinda for making Colombo a, bomb, suicide bomber and terrorist-free city and the second one to Gotabhaya, for making Colombo beautiful.”

When did you last visit Sri Lanka last?
It was Premadasa who started beautifying Colombo immediately after 1977 and it was Ranil who came up with mega city plan in early 2000.
If anything send both thank you cards to Ranil.

Again it was Ranil who engineered the split in LTTE, Hindia which fought the war and VP who won two elections and a war for Mahinda. Mahinda and Gota have already thanked Hindia.

You ought to be grateful to Ranil for Mega City project. And Mahinda and siblings ought to thank Ranil for not charging them for corruption and a few murders and war crimes.

          .
Oh yeah again, Ranil tried to hand over North and East to Prabhakaran through the CFA and may be that is the “split of Sri Lanka” you are referring to.
Ranil is a copycat of Mahinda.
He extended Mahinda’s expressways by following the same concept and as of his claim for mega city project, may be it should be true only if adding the “word mega” to a project which was already inaugurated during MR’s time can consider as an initiative by him.
I don’t know what corruption, murders and war crimes you are talking about. If Ranil is not taking action as you say, the reason may be he is the one who is corrupt and responsible for murders. And also as you say if he engineered the split in LTTE, may be he is qualified to be charged for war crimes too.

Now if only the Rajapaksa’s can stop the white vans, threatening journalists, making them disappear, stop taking huge commissions, organizing thugs to cause chaos in the country, and stop encouraging Sinhala extremists to attack minorities, we can really be impressed.

From all accounts, Buddhist clergy were conspicuously absent.
This is strange as they are/have been at the forefront of political rallies in recent times.
“………………………………is in no sense an oppressive government……………………………….”
SJ, go north and see the oppressive military regime, feared by all citizens.
Can any government hold similar rallies in the north?

The very fact that thousands of rural men & women consented and took part, means that there is support for MR and his acolytes, and disapproval/hatred for this government – not only due to the corruption, known to all southern citizens.
This will get worse if those politicians “rewarded” by the Perpetual Treasuries are not punished, Mahendran gets away with what he did, and if the PM does not at least apologise for ‘recruiting’ him.

The Buddhist clergy openly said that if “Jana Balaya” was an attempt to topple the government, then they were ready to come to the street and occupy Colombo city, in front of the Parliament or any other place until the government steps down.
Anyways, Mahinda seemed to be not there yet. He has lot of patience. And he knows his responsibility more than anybody else. He was the only defeated Statesman who made the entire world exclaimed in disbelief by leaving Temple Trees even before the final results were announced at the last Presidential Election. MR is unpredictable!

Mahinda was convinced by his court astrologer Sumanadasa Abeygunawardena that he was going to reign for many millennia and Mahinda believed his court astrologer. However the voters decided otherwise yet he was planning to stay in the Temple Trees anyway until the Hindians and American ordered him out.

Ranil and his friend Thirukkumaran Nadesan (married to clan chief’s niece Nirupama Rajapaksa) in order to arrange a smooth transition. It was reported in the media that Ranil promised the hora in chief that he would not allow the state to charge the clan for murder, war crimes, theft, misuse of power, and privileges, …………………………

Then he reluctantly left Temple Trees.

Not only Wimal, the entire country cried when they saw Mahinda leaving. Every drop of tear reminiscent the pain people felt and every drop of tear people shed that day was what converted to sheer determination to make him come back.
Sumanadasa, the astrologer was bribed to give that bogus prediction to advance the election by Ranil and the gang.
MR was not reluctant at all. He didn’t leave in a hurry either. He made a farewell speech. His Ministers and MPs bid farewell to him before he left.
                  .
Ranil is not charging Mahinda because he has no direct or indirect allegations against Mahinda. Ranil has no supported evidence against Mahinda. That is the truth. I am not bothered about other Rajapaksas.

I can only sympathize with SJ for highlighting the state of intoxication in one of the political shows in Sri Lanka. It appears that SJ is unaware that intoxication is a part of the Sri Lankan political culture thus enabling that part of the society be volunteers to enact a drama. Leave alone this “rally” , any other rally, or for that matter even electioneering, how many bottles of alcoholic beverages must be opened to “enliven” the spirit and keep it high? In the process comes in the bottles of illicit liquor and thus the contribution of the “Kassippu-Mudalali”. YES! SJ did not see all this when he was in Ceylon and neither will he see that in Australia. Certainly this culture was NOT introduced by the politicians of the caliber of Messers D. S. and Dudley Senanayake, Sir John Kotelawala or Mr. S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike, who lost their wealth because of taking to politics. It was a part of a winning strategy of that caliber of politicians who made hay while the sun shines in order to earn for seven generations. Hence the motto of the current Sri Lanka politican “Vive de l’acool”.

      Karunaratne Gamage
In 2015, when masses came to rallies in hundreds of thousands of their own volition against the government, Basil was nowhere in the country. That is how it started.
JO is better off without Basil. I am glad MR is in charge now.
The only thing is, JO should get out of this bogus claim of “18 lakhs” of people brought to Galle Face by Basil last year. I don’t know who came up with this fake number. Before repeating nonsense, JO should learn to think logical: See the statistics.
The Galle Face Green has 5 hectares.
      1 hectare = 2.47 acres.
      That means 12.35 acres.
According to international standards, one person need 1 square feet to stand.
      1 acre = 43,560 square feet = 43,560 people.
12.35 acres can accommodate only 537,966 people even if they stand shoulder to shoulder.
According to the photos, people were seen standing tightly at the front. But at the far end people were not seen standing so close.
Anyways, last May Day the maximum who occupied Galle Face Green should be around 500,000. With the people at the adjacent roads it could be around 600,000.
I don’t know on what basis JO says that there were 18 lakhs!!!!
The 5-day “Paada Yatra” from Kandy to Colombo held in 2016 covering about 113 kms where MR, Wimal, Namal, Udaya, Bandula, Dalas, Mahindananda, Rohitha, Vasu, Gamini Lokuge, Dinesh, (I can’t remember other names) and almost all other JO MPs, PC and LG members actively took part, saw approximately 20 lakhs of people participating of their own volition, including all participants, well-wishers who gathered by roadside, those who held “dan-salas” and people who gathered at Town Hall for the rally.

          Good Edwin,
I am now so down not being able to see it forward.
Why people in rural corners are treated with misinformation.
Why De Renawa ( Derana who came into being by black money of Rajapakshes ) fearlessly keep people in dark.
If you would please interview any average guy from a rural corner would still hang on with Rajakshes for some reasons – I see almost every day i get to see, development projects being flown. They open housing projects as no times before. R and conrstruction move as had been before or even more.
But none of them are in air.
What happened to the news regarding new opening ?
          Sure some proejcts went wrong.
But people on the west or even oil rich Middleeast too go wrong.
Like for example the VW project which initially planned by current leaderhisp – ended up in vain. For a valid reason – VW lost billions no tbieng able to stand by its own.
In Germany, or Europe, their auto industry for their own reasons blocked – and their investments projects were consequently stopped.

I am not biased to any party, but why MR et al – cant wait until the officla terms of current govt to come power ?
Why they have to go for it violently. Alone setting their efforts to topple the govt – is a punishable act in Europe. If found provable facts – Teethless Namal Baby can be arrested.
Champa is now the spokswoman for JO on CT and other forums.
But how many of them are set to do the job on the web is not countable.
No matter, all is clear, that no ground them to be that apologetic, bu tthey just do, as these men and women are made servile… alone a criminal act being practised by Rajakashes.

Why Mahinda?: Sam, I know how the people in my own Matugama area feel. These people were fairly well off, each having some land cultivated with paddy tea, rubber etc. and each family having their own transport, though it was only a 3 wheeler. They were not rich but they were happy and content lot as villagers normally are. The only problem they had was the war. It was finally ended in Mahinda’s time with a team effort bu many others like SF. Even I was openly telling those days, I don’t care how much money Mahinda stacks away as long as he ends the war. For me the logic was that if the war ends huge losses of life on both sides would end and there is no way one can attach a value to human life.
            .
When Mahinda lost, the economy in the area collapsed. Tea and rubber prices fell and subsidies were not granted. The work on the bridge over Kukuleganga stopped completely. The contractor withdrew with all his equipment. The village youth who were working there lost their jobs. The motorcycles etc that they had hire-purchased had to be given back. In short, there was economic disaster. The people thought all this happened because their Hero Mahinda lost.
            .
Behind all these happenings there was another significant force – the Public servants who sabotaged things. They expected Mahinda to make a come-back and feared repraisals. Even now there are some who do.
            .
The situation in the area has improved and the government is in better control. Let us hope that the anti Mahinda groups would be able to convince them that Mahinda is not going to come back.

Not long ago ( Feb 2018) I happened to take part in an Alms giving during my short visit paid to the country. There I had the chance to mingle with Tuk tuk drivers, prith chanters, state and pvt sector professionals (Engineering, Medicine, Univeisities). So, i happened to hold some sorta of info exchanges about the ground realiteis of the country. On and on, people had been very against the new govt reasoning that they introduce taxes.
To tell you, how can a country run without taxes ? Leaving aside the realities in oil rich middle east countries, I know very well, european countries collect more taxes from each and every citizen from that day on.
One of my good old friends, worked as a medical doctor for a renowed hospital in UK and became so frustrated not being able to read the deductions in his monthly pay sheets. So for them, they are not at all familiar with taxes of any nature. They are very happy if tax free salaries would have been paid. Unfortuatnely, this is not thinkable for srilanka or any other developing coutnries in the future. Also for University education, I think they will have to collect some pay back. By date, they have offered very free uni education. But not many countries can afford it. And the fact GMOA other selfish professionals to abuse their rights being part of heartless anti demos are just because they are given more freedom as no one would ever allow. All these should be subjected to proper screening, can make a real change in this country.
I wonder why GMOA president Padadeniya be the permament man to chair the body – these are very wrong to my eye – if he is biased and being joined with under ground culprit networkd, should be sacked by every means…. while his mediation has been metastazing entire medicla structures in the country today ?

Taxation: I agree with you that taxes are necessary in a democratic country where people are free to engage in any legitimate business of their choice. Taxes are not necessary in countries where all business enterprises are owned and run by the state.
                .
Taking international loans as Mahinda did would not be necessary if we had a free economy based on fair competition. In advanced countries, like the US, you would find a large board saying, ‘Your Tax Dollars at Work’ at public project sites such as road construction sites. If Mahinda were to put up a board during the construction of the southern Highway, it would be something like this: 中国的钱在工作 (Zhōngguó de qián zài gōngzuò) Chinese money at work. Because of the commissions for Mahinda and his Chinese counterparts, it was the preferred method.
                .

The right way would have been to tax the rich people and the businesses and build infrastructure with that money. Taking Highway construction as an example, if this was done in stages with no commissions, using local talent, the cost would have been less. The wealth would have been spread on a large cross section of people instead of only a few in the clan. More industries would have come up, which may then be taxed and the money used for more projects. There will be a stage, where the business would thrive so much that even the workers would be wealthy enough to be taxed.
                .
This is known as a positive feedback cycle where the beneficial changes feed on themselves creating more wealth and a healthy economy.

If there any other means our kind states to expands state income other than Taxes and foreign exchange ?
We ourselves keep talking that ours has been highly rich with natural resources, but none of our so called natural resources bring billions into the country right ? Rmous are there to see oil is there, and other resources as well, but when would they start converiting them into means of foreign exchange if not today ?
So the reality has been – cheap labour, software, tea rubber coconut and vat are the only ways the STATE can have their income right ?
But people s attitude not to be part of taxes, is growing.
My sister who is a teacher said to me, she woul dhate the govt just becauase she will have to pay taxes.
So is the case with my old classmate – who is a medical doc to day.
And neigbouring shop keepers of my parents – were also annoyed by taxes.
In the reality, each and everyone earnings should be taxed right ?
If we are all – the majority of the country are into NON-VIOLENCE based phillosphy – buddhism -why not we yet be difficult in getting the need of having paid taxes if the life standards to improve ?
Even a street monger should pay taxes.
Even a school going pupil if needed has to pay taxes
I think people attitudes should be subjected to a change-not slighty, but dramatically.
Our average mind set – woul dnot agree with any kin dof inspection being done on their OWN work.
Meaning Medical doctors and their assigments should be inspected so as is the case with teachers in every school – is this the case in the country even today ?
NO .. right.

Taxation 2: No one likes paying taxes. Even in ancient times, Kings had to frequently resort to force to collect taxes. In ancient times there were 2 methods of taxation. (i) Direct or (ii) by offering labour (weda wasam kramaya). Artists, craftsmen etc. paid taxes in the form of labour. For example, drummers offered services to temples and the royal court free of direct payment. They were however allocated land for farming by the King. Perhaps due to this, these arts and crafts remained within families and led to the concept of caste. There was a third method known as Shramadana. Offering of labour free of charge.
                    .
An interesting method was used by King Dutu Gemunu when he built the Ruvanweli Seya. The construction required thousands of people and draught animals like elephants. No forced labour or slaves were used. Volunteers were welcomed. The task of providing them with accommodation, food, medical facilities, tools etc. was a huge and complex exercise in logistics.
                    .
It is said that the King arranged for several tables covered with Kahavanu (gold coins) and the volunteers were told ‘work as much you can – take as much as you deserve’. While Egypt built Pyramids using slaves, Sri Lanka equally huge monuments using Shramadana. Variations of this methodology may have been used in building great reservoirs like Parakrama Samudra and irrigation channels like Yoda Ela.
                    .
If the tax payer sees that there is fairness in the taxes specified and that the taxes are used for the greater good of the community and not for the glory and excessive comfort of the rulers, few would be reluctant to pay taxes. I leave it to you to decide whether this is the case in present Sri Lanka.

If you would treate your customers kind is acceptable, but you go beyond your lines.

Sam, I think what we need is a grand Thovilaya to drive these evil spirits of Medamulana, who keep on haunting us. May be champa can show her dancing skills by going in to a trance in that.

I am so fed up of reading news coming from SL these days. I really do. But I have no option either how we can see it forward. This nation has been hoodwinked by the bunch of thugs on an don as nothing can reverse them easily.

Today, I happened to listen to a YT videon in which GOTLER shamelessly says ” yes yes, they dont care about the reasons for the sluggish economy, – I dont think building the monument for DA Rajapakshe is the reason economy to face setbacks bla bla”:
But here, the man is not telling – taking even a cent from STATE should be a corruptive act. No kind of showing remorses at all.
What do you thiink Mr Rodrigo – why these men feel taking funds from THE STATE is no means a criminal act ?
How can they teach his family – offsprings, not to be corrupted ? How can the kind of men ever be exemplary to the nation ?
I think the media men should bring a big big open discussion on the topic.
They just stay mum as if they are fully controlled by Raajapakshe today.
There was an another video Ranjan Ramanayake openly questioned some Journos as to why the question on NY time issues were not directly posed to Former prez and his family. There those journos added that they are scared of questioning MR or anyone in that family. Jounrnos in the country have been under threat.

to blame Namal baby for the debacle and also to say debacle happenned because Basil hora was not there is too simplistic. All JO bigwigs were there – Mara Raja, Booruwansa, Gommanpila, naki vasu, chawura dinesh, moda GLP, hali aluthgama, mala hora raththaran, milini niliya and gon gotha.

can this lot (named above) lead our country?

      sri wimal nissanka
Your name doesn’t tally with the language you used to describe other people.
First follow the same and change your name to either Boorunissanka, Gonsri, Naki nissanka, Chavura sri wimal nissanka, Moda SWN, Hali Sri Nissanka, Sri Nissanka the mala hora, Milini naluva (?) sri wimala or Gon nissanka.
Yes, Mahinda and the others in his Cabinet; WW, Gammanpila, Vasu, Dinesh, GL, Aluthgamage, other two I don’t know and Gotabhaya were the Ministers who supported him with their whole heart to eliminate LTTE and rebuild the war torn country.
Mahinda and his former Ministers are perfectly qualified to run the country again compared to inefficient, dimwit, corrupt PM and the Ministers in this government who are scheduled to be hung by their own boss, the President, when he re-implement the death penalty before his tenure of office is over!!!!

In our days in 70ties and 80ties, we experienced a Vasudewa who loved his people.
But the man is too fallen to the levels of Wimal Gonthadiwanse to date.

I think the society should have been very abusive to turn a man of that nature to the average highly abusive.
We know Wimal ponna wanse is from a very poor background and he would behave the manner those poor folks behave by coming from remote areas – just betraying their respects, but for a rice packet and a glass of hard drink: :::

        Sam Fernando
I see. Your problem is Wimal’s background. If Wimal hailed from a Colombo elite family like Ranil and not from a remote area, you will never use abusive words against Wimal, right? What a pathetic loser you are.
Man, for your information, your type is less than 5% in this country.
All the others are ordinary people and they are the people who decide the future of Sri Lanka and who the next President is. Your 5% is nothing.
I and all the others are with Wimal and Mahinda until we take the country to victory which is inevitable. You just have wait and see.

Unfortunately it’s our politics since time immemorial.

    Politics belongs to elites.

Handful of non-elites or fake elites may have succeeded by boot licking

Irony is that our elites are boot lickers of imperialists.

As far as boot lickers are there genuine citizens; even genuine elites will fail in politics.

If a country is in heavy dept , the first and easiest thing is to reduce it . Stop
bogus developments done with exorbitant borrowings ! Collect enough fund
through reasonable taxes to pay back the loans . Not this government , this is
the way forward to any sensible government ! You just won’t progress in two
or three years just because some countries will help you with loans . Because
over five million voted for you , you just don’t drag them along the streets with
no sense of responsibility or respect for them and any time you choose ? Just
because they are, the lowest among the ordinary are, vulnerable to political
exploitation , that doesn’t mean you should prey them for your selfish motives !
Who are these leaders , Dinesh , Vasudeva , Wimal , Gammanpila ? What are
they capable of ? If you have money , you can distribute it and this what they
know ! But to earn and save that money you need to put lot of energy into it and
also you need wisdom to spend it ! None of the projects they initiated have
given the country any returns and why on earth at the age of going to hospital
beds , do they want to repeat their old tricks on the streets ? JRJ is not anymore
to break your heads and fill them with clay ! Namal is only exhibiting that he
knows nothing except his daddy’s date expired old habits !

I can understand your comments because you are a Rajapakse boot liker

You do not need to call me by those names, I have not robbed the country like those thakkadis that I mentioned. The names I gave are too good to them. the ali baba (MR) and horu 40 must be hanged in galle face by their balls and you should be included for going kade to them.

The real failure of Mahinda was that they gave aralu and booze. Or to put it in correct order booze to attract the crowd and Aralu to amplify the number. The Aralu worked but the booze was a bit of a failure. Next time they should try Aralu and Kudu.

It’s been told that Rajapakses spent over Rs. 3 billion from the loots for this silly carnival. Few Pettah food suppliers were paid Rs. 25 million each. There were 700 buses from Kurunegala alone, hardly any people, most of them had less than ten persons. Guess the cost, each bus cost Rs 50000/- then for 700 and the numbers from all parts of the country. Rajapakse’s have money to burn, and all of it looted from the public. It collapsed because of Gotler was there, and Basil was not theere and he was not the organisers. It’ all now openly brought out to the public the divisions in the Rajapakse camp. JO members were paid handsomely by MR to dance to his tune, and they too don’t have any ropes to hang but MR. Now people well understood that it all done not for their sake but for the Rajapakse’s.

      3 billion= 3 x 1000 million= 3000 million = 3000 x 10 lacks = 30 000 lacks of rupees ?

OMG – They could instead build 6 000 houses ( if each house would cost 5 lacks).

There are over 40% of lanken population – whose daily income is not even 500 rps.

They the Rajapaspskeh doctored the documents to show the world bank that the country is now a mid income earning one during his periods.
But the truth as it is… there are lot more in the country whose monthly income is not even 10 000 rps right ?

They the palhoras like Rohitha Abey someone and other goons that looted the state during high days of MR – enjoy their days in Galadari leaving those poor villager came from the rural corners of the country – on the streets.

These men in JO should be bombed if we at all to feel a better future.
Then only we can see it beyond. Basta.

Napoleon Bonaparte said: “An army marches on its stomach”. If an army with so many rules and disciplined soldiers’ marches on its stomach, what can we say about marches like Mahinda’s? His ‘soldiers’ too marched on their stomachs. The problem was that their stomachs were full of Aralu and booze.
    .
What about other marches in history? The following marches come to my mind.
    .
1- The salt march of Mahatma Gandhi against British rule.
2- The march for the liberty of black people led by Martin Luther King.
3- The Long march of Mao Tse Tung, which was actually a march in reverse – a retreat.
4- The March from Colombo to Kandy organized by none other than JR the great democrat against the language policy of the government.
    .
None of them had it as easy as Mahinda did. The government acted as if nothing is happening, which happens to be one of the ways of dealing with a march. The others are:
1- Use full force and smash it up mercilessly.
2- Use appropriate force and stop it.
    3- Succumb and run away.
    .
It is ironic that Mahinda who smashed up much smaller and more justified marches in such a way that no one unless he is suicidal would have even thought about marching again was allowed to have his way in this march with no opposition.

So, all these will be Hitlers. So, you jumped from Ranil’s side. Ranil is not coming for sure as he says the MAfia LEader for Bond Scams is a better position and I stays the pARTY LEADER AND PM. IT looks protesant plan will work and One Sinhal buddhist will fught agaisnt another Sinhla buddhist. PRotestants will vote to one of those.

Could anyone, please advise me as to what exactly MR wants fro this so-called ‘peoples march’. In my opinion what he wants is just to grab power. He should announce as to how what his plans are (if any) to save the country – his manifesto?

        Arther,

he or anyone who would get elected to lead next

        1) will have no other options than taking more loans to pay off RAJPAKASHE HUGE LOANS

        2) How could Rajaakshe make wonders in slugish economy ? SL is an another poor country whose per capita is less than 3000 dollars. – I believe even lower than this levels when get to see rural views – coconut huts – of villagers – and over 40% are still without the basic needs (shelter, occupation etc).

        3) Those who attack the current men should be able to DEBATE them on an open debate.. are they ready ?
        Never sofar.

        4) Avangarde, Mig deal and several other hugefund scandals should be revealed and punished
Gotabaya is shamelessly trying to justify the funds grabbed for building their father monument, but demolishing SWRD monument in colombo ????????

        5) Almost every one close them are alleged to have high crimes including money laundering acts – NONE of these find in MEDIA, since mEDIA business men are caught by the vicious agendas of Rajakshes
