An Independence Day Of Reflection, Reckoning & Reform

Sri Lanka is yet again at cross roads when marking 75 years of independence. A spiralling economic crisis has resulted in over 9 million fellow citizens slipping into poverty, with over 30% of families food insecure and 56,000 children facing acute malnutrition. These startling figures are in the context of shortages of essential items, rising prices and continuing power cuts impacting the most vulnerable communities and exposing Sri Lanka’s deepening inequalities.

Despite the hardships faced by so many in Sri Lanka, the Government of President Ranil Wickremesinghe marked independence with pomp and pageantry reportedly costing Sri Lanka nearly Rs200 million, funds that could have been used to meet basic needs of Sri Lankans. Such extravagance must be juxtaposed to the government’s claim of financial difficulties to hold the local government election.

Further, Sri Lanka is yet again confronted with renewed repression. 4th of February dawned with reports of brute force used by the police and thugs against those who participated in a peaceful and non-violent Satyagraha in Colombo and attempts to prevent protests in other parts of Sri Lanka. Such tactics are not new to Sri Lanka, with victims of violence, minorities, critics and political opponents having faced violence and intimidation for decades with no prospect of genuine reckoning. Despite Sri Lanka’s history of repression, the few months of Ranil Wickremesinghe’s presidency has witnessed new levels of repression including attacks on peaceful protesters, the use of national security and counter terror laws to target protests and protesters, creation of a High Security Zone in Colombo, intimidation, harassment and surveillance.

The post-independence period continues with the divide and rule policy, creating ethnic and religious cleavages and producing ethno nationalism. This has sustained and reproduced root causes of the conflict, contributing to rising intolerance and violence with no genuine efforts at a political solution and reconciliation. Despite a clear call for political reforms and a system change in Sri Lanka by the citizens since March last year, the authoritarian and militarized governance model continues under the new president, sustaining entrenched corruption, cronyism, nepotism and impunity. These trends exacerbate the already existing crisis in governance, democratic decay, and the loss of people’s trust in the political class. Coupled with the sharpening economic and social crises, is a growing despair, anguish and loss of hope among the people. Hundreds of Sri Lankans are leaving the country every week in search of economic security and a better future abroad.

Amidst such a context, socio-economic and political reforms that work towards an inclusive, plural and peaceful Sri Lanka are urgently required. Reforms at a system change that reflects the demands of the people must be initiated. Such reforms should entail strengthening democratic institutions and processes in order to rectify the major deficiencies of Sri Lanka’s existing system of representative democracy, governance and politics which the citizens protest movement have highlighted.

This calls for fresh initiatives to form a broad democratic movement that can eventually build a robust and inclusive democratic alliance between the politically awakened citizens, political parties and the civil society movements. Such a broad democratic coalition is urgently necessary to play the leading role in bringing deep democratic reforms back to the country’s immediate political agenda. Such a coalition will also be best suited to the task of mobilizing the people of the country for a truly meaningful regime change in the near future.

Time has come to dissolve the parliament and a temporary government for three years made with people with the statesman qualities. Elections can wait until a new constitution is passed by the people at referendum. we need SYSTEM CHANGE now

Who will decide which people have ” statesman qualities.”?
      .
Your comment will be very popular, but it will be meaningless unless someone can give an acceptable answer to that question.
      .
Also a new constitution cannot be passed – by whom?
      .
Ideally, Parliamentary Elections ought to be conducted ASAP. Given the over-all situation it must be the Local Government that have to be held, as now scheduled, Thursday, the 9th of March.

Dear S_M: That Local Government election is still in the balance. The “Last” attempt by Ranil W – the President would be to include a statement in his “Presidential Address” on the 8th of this month as follow:

“My Government proposes to postpone the Local Government Elections scheduled to be held on the 9th of March 2023, because of the dire economic consequences that would follow”.

This Presidential Address is to be debated for two days from the 9th -the 10th. A vote would be taken on the 10th. It would definitely be passed with a “Majority” of that “134” of Pohottuwa votes. Then the last nail is done.

There is a Court case to be decided on the 10th. The decision would obviously say that the Parliamentary Majority has voted to postpone the elections. Case CLOSED.

          Dear Simon,
          .
If that happens, and Ranil really manipulates the postponement (in reality, the cancellation) of elections, he has to be ready for protests whose strength cannot be estimated. Let’s hope it’s non-violent, but that is almost too much to expect.
          .
It becomes important, therefore that we speak out early, clearly, unambiguously and responsibly. Your prediction of his course of action will be extremely valuable, if proved correct. If proved wrong? It will still be legitimate for us to say that he was daunted by our determination to resist.
          .
I hope that you’re proved wrong. I’m sure that such is also your wish. However, there are many intelligent people who have told me that what you have told me is correct. This evil man will stop at nothing, however meaningless in lasting terms his actions are.

      Dear Naman,
      .
I respect your impulse, but we’re fighting totally unscrupulous forces. See what Simon has predicted.
      .
You’re right to say that a new constitution has to be passed by the people at a referendum. But we can’t be doing this for ever! The cost! We have to stop playing games.
      .
Who is to draft the new constitution? We surely don’t want the fellows now in Parliament to do that. We said this not only when Ranil inveigled his way in last year, but I said it in late 2018 when we wanted Sirisena to cancel the appointment of Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister. We then asked for the re-appointment of this same Ranil, but we asked him to stop regarding himself as leader-for-life of the UNP.
      .
I can’t now even remember how we got that done. We did it, but our fear that Ranil is not a man with any decency has now been confirmed. But soft! He is mortal!!

Pervert Musharraf, military ruler to fugitive in murder cases (sounds familiar) died in Dubai, living in exile. He left country after he was defeated in elections in 2008 and on his return in 2013, trying to contest election, was arrested and sentenced to death, only for the decision to be overturned within a month. Rumors are , our spineless Prof Dinesh will soon resign, for Mahinda to become PM again, who is reportedly abstaining from campaign and attending functions, due to poor health ???

So what have we received for all that spending with increasing citizen’s expenditure. The 225 should have paid that bill apart from their own electricity bills for AC and use of all gadgets. The villagers cant afford their daily bread, but leaders don’t care, with free houses, cars, security, pensions and other perks. We shot into the sea and the parashooters showed their boldness and skills. Protestors will be killed.

    Prof Uyangoda
I am sorry to see you along with the members of the 225 rogue group who shamelessly conspired and robbed 35 million import duty multiple times. Making more than a million of tax payers money as compensation monthly while common man is struggling to live.
These rogues like Sumanthiran, Chanakian, Faiz want to form democratic alliance to rob the country. Sumanthiran got allocation from Ranil to the tune of 20 million during Yahapalanaya time. It was not spent on the electorate transparently. Completely new set of people should come forward and win the next election. Send 225 rogues of all parliaments up to now living, for robbing us ‘legally” using retrospective act of Parliament

“a broad democratic coalition is urgently necessary to play the leading role in bringing deep democratic reforms back to the country’s immediate political agenda.”

Coalition means opportunism. For example in 2015, inthe name of democracy with the so called good governance several the major political parties formed a broad democratic coalitioin with SLFP lead by Sirisena, UNP lead by Ranil, on behalf of Tamils TNA and onbehalf Muslims Rishard, Hakeem, EPDP, Up Country Mano Ganesan and others with civil sosiety with so many promises but finally end of with zero and we all know how that coalition fought each other for greedy power and to hand over the government to Rajapaksa family. First of Sumanthiran couldn’t keep the TNA as it was earlier because of his power greedy.
