An Open Letter To Maithree Wickramasinghe

Dear Madam,

History always speaks of the role of women in times of deep crisis and despair. Therefore we reach out to you during this very critical time in our country. Well documented allegations of corruption by those in high office is rampant, unprecedented and mounting. The very fabric of our nation is deteriorating. We lack moral authority and sincere political intervention. The silence of the United National Party and its leadership is deafening. As a feminist and an advocate of gender equality, we believe that you have always promoted the participation of women in the areas of politics and ideology in order to promote social change.

The UNP hitherto ably led by your husband and immediate former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, is in a crisis. It is at a grave and serious cross roads. The path it will take will determine whether it can either flourish or grow, or whether it will wither and die. And we fervently believe that you have a duty and an obligation to contribute to resolve this crisis.

Following the massive electoral defeat at the Presidential elections, the UNP which should have taken decisive and visionary steps, to conquer and consolidate its political power, is today struggling to determine its future and leadership. It is hugely evident that under the leadership of your husband the UNP is divided and has failed to plan and we may well be as a consequence, planning to fail!

Innumerable meetings but insufficient commitments have exasperated and inflamed the status quo. Many such meetings have ended in deadlock. Efforts to arrange future meetings between stake holders to determine a way forward and to sort out differences have failed. The hope and often communicated adage, “Everything will be sorted out next week,” is now fading into oblivion.

What is evident however is that unless remedial measures are taken and some reasonable plans are salvaged, the UNP will go into the General elections, with all to lose and nothing to gain. The failures and delays in adjudicating party leadership by your husband despite the will of the majority of the party members is detrimental to say the least. It undermines the UNP as a strong national (as opposed to a family) political force.

For over two decades now, your husband and family have enjoyed the perks of elected office. The people have allowed such generosities. We believe that it is time that the UNP led by your husband give those generosities back to the people by listening to the voice and the call of the people and the members of his own party. They say that the death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment.

We are of the opinion that one of the duties of assuming public office is also to know when to relinquish such office. As someone who has held political office in numerous capacities, one of the great perks your husband has is that when his tenure is done, he has authority to determine the legacy and leadership of the party. We decry his efforts utilizing his long tenure to silence the members of his party and the people by saying, “I know best.” And use it like a bludgeon.

The General Elections are only a few months away. The UNP is the only formidable national party which commands the support of the mainstream minority parties, reflecting the unique diversity of Sri Lanka. Today we see alarming and concerning signs of frustration amidst the UNF coalition parties. This is of grave concern and we urge that all steps be taken by the UNP to forthwith, consolidate and strengthen the hitherto built solidarity with the minority parties. If we fail to prepare we will only prepare to fail. There is no time to waste or procrastinate in taking the urgent, relevant and winnable decisions that needs to be taken. We must make every endeavor to protect our democracy and ensure that we establish the UNP as a formidable opposition.

Mr Premadasa”s candidacy for the Presidency was approved and finalized under the leadership of your husband.  As you are aware Mr. Premadasa acquired a commendable voter base during the presidential elections. 5.6 million Sri Lankans have given him a mandate.

The strongest party democracies flourish from dissent and lively debate. Unfortunately the time is up for such debate in the UNP. Party members of every background and belief have come together to unanimously elect their party leader. They have cast their votes. Any false and inflated notion that what is best for the party is what your husband decides is untenable. It means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”  Your husband must set aside smaller differences in service of a greater purpose. He must resign.

With the glaring failures and broken promises of the current government in such a short time, the UNP has insurmountable amounts of work to do. In order to rise to that mandate, and fulfill the aspirations and of the people, whilst allaying their fears and concerns, the party needs to be strong, steady and solid.

The unity and the unanimity of the UNP today rests in the hands of your husband and a few others. With rumors floating of your husband’s affiliations and that which is contributing to the dysfunctionality of the party, we strongly believe immediate, remedial and transparent action is needed.

The only party that can ensure a thriving democracy, unity between the people, diversity, religious pluralism and peaceful co-existence and promote the rights and equality of women, in Sri Lanka today is unequivocally the UNP.

You are a powerful figure at this cross road. And please don’t forget that it is the women, the mothers, the daughters who suffer the most whether it is at war or in deadlock. At this moment the UNP needs women’s leadership and determination more than anywhere else. We urge you to speak up and inspire action. You might be the only person who might have the capacity and tenacity to impress upon him the gravity of the situation and the need to act. We hope you will be that woman who will go down in the annals of history as the one who ensured the Unity of the UNP.

Unanimity we might never achieve, but the unity of the party is paramount. Relinquishing his leadership is the only way forward…

Your husband has served the UNP for decades. His legacy must always be remembered and honored.

But today the party needs a different direction and vision. Despite blemishes, ups and downs, the UNP has a rich history of which it can be extremely proud of. We must come together to ensure that this legacy continues. Let’s send a powerful message to the country and to the ruling party- we are the United, UNP and we will come together for our country and her future….

Thank you

Good letter. Hope Maithree sees it.

Ranil is a Rajapakse mole within the UNP. They have the dirt on his “alternative” life style so he is in their hands. Reluctantly, he gave Sajith the Presidential candidacy, just 35 days before the election. He is now holding on to the UNP leadership while the party is going downhill and splitting.

Sajith for PM candidate, and Karu for UNP leadership. A winning partnership.

In any case, Ranil will end up in the dustbin of history, and, if the pohottuwa wins a two thirds majority, SriLankans will end up in a living hell.

“As you are aware Mr. Premadasa acquired a commendable voter base during the presidential elections. 5.6 million Sri Lankans have given him a mandate”

Should RW step down? Yes, no arguments. Ranil has faced a couple dozen defeats, he let go of them in front of his personal benefits. MR faced a defeat, he took it a challenge, started to plan his next moves from the very same hour he was defeated. Sajith doesn’t fall into any of these 2 categories. The defeat beat Sajith. He went into hiding for a month carrying a broken-heart as if end of the world, and said he wanted to be away from politics for sometime. So Sajith can’t face defeats like MR did.

When Sajith wasn’t able to win his own electorate, these women should ask themselves why 5.6 million voted for Sajith. I guess he is being influenced to take over UNP leadership. At present, Karu might be a choice.

Rw has done the biggest damage and ruined this grand old party during last 26 years as the leader If I am not mistaken he is the only leader who held this position for such long period and was unable to capture power as UNP.So no ppoint of talking further. He should relinquish without any further delay as hardly any time to organise the upcoming general elections.

      CT Admin,

Ranil says “Stay Wife. Do not rock the culture “

      So, she obediently stays.

Maithree, yes , the times are changing, and time for Ranil, to move on.

Thank you for valuable piece of writing. Dear Madam Maithree Please ask RW to leave the party and stay at home . Day by day the problems r getting worse . Actually he should have given the leadership to another one in 2015 . He helped his friend Arjuna Mahendran to leave the country giving a huge black mark to the party and the country. We r fed up of him . Pl keep him at home .

Ohhh Almighty creator; I believe in DUMB BLOND SYNDROME or women have spoon handle length (not even that just two inches length). Any way, are all these getting funds from MCC ?.nine groups means, President, vice president and Secretary (No Treasurer as president is always the Treasurer), so 27 people want Ranil to quit that. He knows it is Sajith and the gang wants him to quit. But, the Bond scam group wants him to stay. It looks FAILED – NATIONAL CANDIDATE PROJECT IS DESPERATE. Even TRUMP DOES NOT LISTEN to his wife, why should Ranil. Hilarious. Ranil is a HITLER, DICTATOR he never quit. [edited out]

Come on…. stop kidding you loony dudes, in which world was she (Maithri) living all this years. Was she deaf and blind and did not see or hear what her husband was up to all this while?

Didn’t she at least feel the stench..?

This woman is worse than Ranil. The word SHAME is strange to her.

If not for her disgraceful aiding and abetting, Ranil would not have stooped to such unprecedented and shameful depths that the Sri Lankan society has ever witnessed.

    Dear Admin,
Thanks very much for the honor you have offered me and the confidence you have in me. This is very much a surprise for me. I really am having difficulty to find words to express my gratitude for the high praise I see in your letter.
However, as a dedicated wife, despite my being a companion to my husband to various political events, you must have noted that I have never expressed my opinions on political matters in public or in private. I always had only two priorities in my life: Make my husband feel comfortable at home & teaching English. I let my husband deal with politics. I was always confident that he would never do anything to hurt even his sworn enemies. Therefore, I was very surprised & saddened when his political enemies accuse him of scamming money from the CB b’cos I know for certain that he never brought to me a penny from any illegally sources. On the contrary, he spent a significant portion of our family income on politics – mainly to maintain the party.
I don’t know how to turn my tongue to say no to a very hearty request made by you all but I have no choice but to say it though with utmost sadness. However, I can assure you that my husband knows perfectly well to take the right decision at the right moment. Patience is his best guide!
    Thanks again!

    Wishing you all the luck,
    Sincerely,
    Maithree Wickramasinhe.

      Hey Maithree,

      – Why was the closing time of accepting CB bond bids in Feb 2015 extended to favour one lucky primary dealer?
      – Why was that bidder offered an unprecedented loan of 5000 million by the BoC over the phone in a matter of minutes (who sanctioned it)?
      – When the decision has to be made by the Monetary board what were your hubby’s political cohorts doing at the CB in the morning of the fateful day / at whose behest were they there?
      – Who appointed a non citizen as CB governor and made him stay even after scandal was exposed and thereafter facilitated a safe exit for him?
      – Who prevented state owned captive sources from bidding at the primary market and sold the very same bonds to the EPF at the secondary market and caused massive losses to the public – Source: Auditor General and COPE report.
      – Under whose instructions did Mahendran say he committed all these crimes? (See record of proceedings of COPE)
*** Your poor hubby didn’t bring anything home… just like Rajapaksa’s..!, but ripped the economy of all our homes..!

      – What was he doing with convicted rapist GONAWALA SUNIL in the 80s – playing cards?
      – Any idea of how attorney Wijedasa Liyanarahchi was sent to heaven from Batalanda ?
      – What was your hubby doing with Douglas Peries, SSP?
      – Who forged a cabinet paper and deceived the entire cabinet to sell Hambantota Port (verifiable evidence is available in Prof. Lalithasiri Gunaruvan’s SC FR 25/2017 case now pending before the Supreme Court)
      – Ask your hubby about the grenades he gave Somachandra Rajapakse (Anuradhapura) to be tossed to disrupt Gamini Dissanayake’s Presidential election rally / the victim who lost his limb is still around and can be produced !

This is just the tip of the iceberg. My dear you are now opening a can of worms….!!!

Good luck… continue your life at public expense. Remember to ask Mahinda for some additional security to protect you and your hubby form the anger of the masses…!!!

I have heard a few but this is mind boggling for sure.
        Thank you Mr Ranasinghe..

I also heard on Gonja Tapes how Dr Rani is talking to ex UNP Minister Mr Ranajan Ramanayaka about that government issued revolver being fired in the minister’s Govt issued Housing Complex ,
And how Dr Rani instructed the Minister to make it as a misfiring while cleaning when the Police inquires it..

Dr Rani is apparently is busy finalizing his retirement package in the event the Keslwatta Kid’d Boys do the impossible ) or is it undoable) and roll Dr Rani from UNP boss job.

Dr Rani wouldn’t have any issues with the Cash, with the dosh which was flashed after that BoC LKR 50000 Million Loan which was pumped into Dr Rani’s Royal mates kitties.

But the major issue is Dr Rani’s request to Prez Nangdasena for his personal Security Insurance for the retirement.
Besides the Bullet proof Merc ( or is it a Meamer) Dr Rani wants 200 Personal Security Cordon, manned mainly by the STF.

Do you think Dr Prez Nandasena grant him that , when Nandasena himself has not even half of that ?..

BTW, I remember Dr Rani going to see Nandasean douring that 89 day PM ship of Mahinda , while Dr Rani was still occupying the Araliya Tree Mandidaraya..
Do you know anything about it Mr Rananasighe?.

      Dear Lady

Thanks for your gracioùs note. Because Ranil W is inaccessible, we are compelled to go via you, to even get a simple message across to him!

Simply put, Ranil has overstayed his welcome by a mile, and he should – with the grace of God, go, and let someone else steer the party in whichever direction destiny will guide him.

No one, having an iota of self respect would have dragged his feet as this man, in the face of such opposition from his own camp. Therefore he now enters the annals of this country’s political history for all the wrong reasons.

      Dear

Please let me say this in response to your following:

“my husband knows perfectly well to take the right decision”

Had your husband knew how to take the right decision the country and the UNP would not have suffered so much and he would not have ended up being the longest serving and the only leader of the UNP for over a quarter century who has failed to become the “head of the government” or “head of the state”, despite having innumerable opportunities. Since 1946 to 1994 UNP had 6 leaders over a period of 48 years and all of them were either head of state or head of government. He has consistently and disgracefully proved that he has never been anywhere near a right decision throughout his tenure and is never going to be near a right decision ever, given the manifestly visible strong conviction of the masses that we all now witness.

I don’t see a modicum of honesty in a person who wants us to believe that “RW is now about to take the right decision”. Until you posted your response I had a better impression of you, despite a few reservations.

Please stop cheating us. We now have no respect for the both of you. Just get lost for the sake of the UNP and the country. We’v had enough of your shameless antics.

she’s a gracious classy lady well educated well dressed simply and no woman in the SLPP or the SLFP can get close to her.
no other rajapuka’s or their female manly looking crime committing cohorts will ever be able to hold a candle to this classy creat of the gods.

the foolish sitting on their tiny import brains, 6.9 million of the stupidest Sinhala Buddhists along with their cardinal’s toy boys within a little more 69 days have brought the recovering isle into a mode of standstill.

wages pensions have been frozen, the cost of living has gone up to the moon, political revenge is at its peak the dollar is sliding down the pallan its good for exports but the costs of imports of raw materials desperately required to meet these export orders will become prohibitive and the writing’s on the wall.

to put it into a nutshell the curtain is drawn and around the Sinhalese will no clothing to wear and around the country as animals do – born in their birthday suits exposing their tiny little midgets.

now coming to the main story Mrs. Maithri Wickramisingheshould motivate her husband to gracefully give way to a new leader preferably Mr. Karu Jayasuriya who with his affinity to Buddhism and if was allowed to consent the presidential polls the country well and would be on a better footing by now.

then in 2024/2025, she can be the presidential candidate and by that time she after her nurturing and maturing period of time she could and will end up as a classy clean lady president the second in the annals of this once upon a time great island.

in every aspect of her life including her university career I wish the Wickramasinghe couple all the best in all their endeavors may they live long and one day attain nirvana.

    cheers, R. J, the one & only.

Since Ranil Wickremasinghe took over the leadership of the party he was a ‘successful’ back-seat driver. He sat comfortably in the back seat and he drove the party. He lead the party from the back.
Now UNP is a dying party inflicted with disseminated cancer and should be allowed to die peacefully.

  • 14
    2

No way do I believe that
“The only party that can ensure a thriving democracy, unity between the people, diversity, religious pluralism and peaceful co-existence and promote the rights and equality of women, in Sri Lanka today is unequivocally the UNP.”
I have too many bad memories of its actions and failures in office.
But definitely there was a more democratic environment — freedom of speech, the media, etc — during 2015-2019 than for many years.

However, I believe it is vital to prevent any party/coalition getting that dangerous 2/3, and if that means that Ranil Wickremasinghe should step down and allow the UNP to whole-heartedly support the, apparently, most wanted candidate, SP, then he should lose no more time and act immediately. Time is of the essence; he must not repeat the mistakes of the last election.

    • 5
      0

I wd like to add some “second thoughts” to my post 25/1, to the last paragraph.
      .
It is more & more apparent that SP is not really intelligent, thoughtful leadership material, & also seems to act too much on impulse. Is also impatient. Perhaps RW is far from confident that the leadership should be given to him & is thus reluctant to entrust the party to him. But why has there been no (it wd seem) attempt to develop a younger leadership to take over?
      .
However, clearly the UNP must at least SEEM to be united asap & act accordingly to face the oncoming election. I hope this happens soon.

Dear “Writers” of this letter to Madame Mithri Wickramasinghe: In reading your letter, when I came across ” The UNP hitherto “ABLY” (emphasis by me) led by your husband…..” a feeling compelled me to give up any further reading. Yet, with difficulty I kept on till the end, just to see who is writing the letter. Two things you should have considered before writing it (1) Didn’t you know that this lady is a highly educated and a “Professional” attached to a University. She has always accompanied RW in his world tours, both on Government business and private visits. She lives with him. With all that doesn’t she KNOW of this man “RW”? (2) This “RW” is not a “Leader” at all and that alone proved his failure to continue the “Defeats” at many elections and whenever he got the opportunity FAILED to perform. (3) He (RW) has no character to accept defeat; but resorts to all types of “Manipulations” to hang on to power. (4) He is an “Opportunist” who would comfortably forget the welfare of his political party and go at any cost to secure his “Comforts” and ” Well-being”. With this “BRIEF” background, do you still think by writing to Mrs. Maithri that any of your desired intentions would be fulfilled?

  • 9
    0

What I find difficult to fathom is why is RW dragging his feet when the general election is just a couple of weeks away? Delays on his part will only help the Rajapakses to muster that 2/3rd majority. After that it will be untold misery. The blame will fall squarely on the doors of RW.
It would not be a case of Nero fiddling but Ranil fiddling when the country is burning!

    • 3

      Plato,
It is not very difficult to understand Ranil’s behavior if you can figure out where his primary loyalty is. When it comes to the choice between his social relation & the politics, his pattern of behavior clearly shows that his close friends & relatives comes first over politics. The logic behind such choice is simple: Why betray close friends & relatives in favor of “poor & ignorant” voters whose loyalty cannot be trusted? Ranil certainly has a fixed theory for economic progress but, as an experience politician who respect parliamentary democracy, he knows that losing election does not necessarily derail his economic plans. Therefore, it is natural for his conscientious to force him to act in such a way that UNP remains close to his social class. That is all to it.

Could it be for the same that he desisted from giving Premadasa the nod until just six weeks before the presidential election?

RW being naturally a stuck up character and those around him simply sang Hosannas to curry favour with him. We saw the quality of the inner circle who were least interested in the welfare of the poor but their own interests, who are well looked after while the Party discipline was pushed to the back burner and the corrupt members in the caucus made hay in the sunshine. People noted you were quite at home with Rajapakshes and enjoyed total immunity and in fact had taken a cue from them to help vandalise the workers EPF and other Govt. revenue. Hence continuing to hang on to UNP leadership when your conduct is highly questionable ,to say the least is selfish and does not speak well of a dubbed Mr. Klean, clearly the morality is assailed. It is a pity that people have to seek refuge in Mrs. Wickramasinghe to intervene in this UNP issue though it is not a family matter or concern. To listen to his spouse and agree to change his stance would be a terrific come down for RW.

Wow ladies, you seem to know all about the power of ‘wind beneath the wings’. Will you be telling GR’s wife if he fails to deliver? Why didn’t you lot ask MR’s dear wife to get her husband to clean up his act when it came to mismanagement of public funds, abuse of power, murders & other corrupt practices which has brought SL to the lowest level so far in our otherwise glorious history? Of course, you may disagree with me & believe that SL was at the highest in terms of economic development, standard of living, etc etc during MR’s time after vanquishing the Tamil terrorists, a Dutugamunu era of prosperity but at least you should have asked the wife of that yob we had as President previously to step down as well because he was out of his depth in the highest office in the country. Anyway, now that you have started the ball rolling, why not get Premadasa jnr’s wife to keep him on a leash, just in case his political ambitions becomes a reality.

    Maithri,
I think you should come forward this time and help him in the coming Presidential election.
I knew Ranil since my University days. He is a gentleman. But sometimes he replies bluntly. He has to be careful on sensational issues and should say that he will consider on humanitarian grounds whether it is local or international. It is sad that Chandrika also played havoc when the CEASEFIRE agreement was signed. He was so popular at that time, but she dissolved the Parliament and misled the people. During MR’s period freedom of the Press was suppressed. Finall Maithiripala Sirisena also proved that he was a snake under the grass. Finally Sajith Premadasa was misled by some Parliamentarians. This is the time he should join hands with Sumanthiran and leading lawyers at Hulftsdorp. Keep Tamil politicians like Siddharthan, Vijakala, etc at a distance who look for political gains. Sajith Premadasa has no base vote and immatured and is an unrecognized character at international level. Now changes are taking throughout the world. Keep in close contact with India and the Western democratic countries and stress on the importance of making Sri Lanka a self-sufficient country and to concentrate on developing irrigation schemes throughout Sri Lanka. Finally assure the people in preserving democracy and freedom of opinion. .
