Anura, From The Shores Of Galle Face

By Arundathie Sangakkara

The Galle Face green was filled, not just with heads yesterday. It was filled with heads that were not empty. Ironically Anura Kumara Dissanayake was facing the Port City from the podium. The people were facing the stage full of the allies of the National People’s Power (NPP) movement. Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) held yesterday, it’s most attended and successful meeting in recent history. Earlier it was commonly believed that only the Rajapaksas or the mighty UNP had the easy and mythical power of filling the Galle Face to its brim. It was a dark day yesterday to the slaves of the Medamulana ‘Walawwa’ and certainly to the UNP government that went out of its way to issue Gotabaya Rajapaksa a fraudulent passport and a fraudulent NIC.

The “five lakh JVP” yesterday has shown its strength.

Finally, there seemed to be a leader worth pointing to one’s child from one’s shoulders. Many rural villagers had travelled to witness this event. There were breastfeeding women, clutching their tiny infants close, witnessing the unfolding of history.

The bankrupt cyber slaves of the common UNP-Pohottu camp have spent a busy afternoon on the 18th sharing pictures of plastic chairs lined up on the Galle Face green and shamelessly sharing the images of some rice packets organized by someone for feeding the attendees travelling from far. Their ridiculous sarcasm only depict how agitated this common camp of Elephants cum Pohottu has become at the rise of the alternative political option.

The Challenge Within A Political Vacuum

A wave of populism is enveloping politics across country lines. It is a current global phenomenon where people abhor and reject traditional politics and traditional politicians. Populism demands that “new leaders” should occupy the space previously occupied by traditional politicians. The gift of populism to the USA was Donald Trump. A more fortunate Ukraine got the gift of Zelensky, a comedian who played the role of President in a TV reality show (probably he is a better leader). Sri Lanka’s populism has gifted us a Gotabaya. It is not clear what the phenomenon of Nagananda Kodituwakku, Rohan Pallewatta, Ajith Rohana Colonne and Gamini Wijesinghe who have stirred some dialogue on ‘alternative leadership’ on social media. The real litmus test of these alternate leaders would be an election which is the real test of democracy.

Within the anomalous constitutional and political reality it is every party’s dilemma to win an election single handedly. Not even with the help of their traditional allies can these parties win an election anymore, in the age of populism. The cyber depreciation of personalities like Gamini Viynagoda and Professor Sarath Wijesuriya have made the all-important concept of civil society an obscenity.

As a standalone concept, populism cannot replace the role of democracy. Alternatively, without embracing the realities of populism, democratic politics has no survival in the modern, complex political world moderated by the open society of the internet.

The simple reason that populism refuses traditional politics is pretty much due to traditional politicians being, generally, a bunch of selfish, thieving villains. In Sri L anka the elephant, the flower bud, the hand, the chair, the betel leaf, the TNA and the Muslim Congress- these all represent those deplorable qualities of politicians. However countries electing leaders in a populist tide fall from the pan to the fire because without professional and serious politics, the state cannot be run although governments may be.

Who, then can address this political vacuum intensified in the post Easter bombing era?

Anura And The JVP

In the modern reality no politician has a vaccine to immunize themselves from social media vitriol. The JVP has taken some stances for democracy in the face of unfolding political debacles that warranted dramatic moves. The nearest example is the constitutional crisis of October 2018. It is easy to brand someone the “Red Elephant”. So what can this selfsame Red Elephant do? Defend a principle and defend democracy? Sacrifice a heartless neo-liberal Ranil at the altar of a jester President? Not do both and watch the establishment of a Rajapaksa Regime? Jump in to the throat of the devil? Or the deep blue sea? Be a red bell? Or tolerate the scathing term Red Elephant with equanimity? The JVP dilemma is such.

But then, there is the little fact about the real opposition.

Four Years As The Real Opposition

If you analyze the three amazing years of R Sampanthan as Leader of the Opposition you will realize that he has hardly taken any opposition to the government whom he appears to adore. You can comb through a hundred Hansards. You will end up with nothing to show any real opposition that our opposition posed.  It is in fact the JVP that has risen their voices against the frauds of this failed state where institutions and financial governance were both diminished.

Even those who hate the JVP believe we need the JVP in parliament.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, probably sent to earth by Almighty just to issues lunatic statements affected by the lunar effects of politics also stated recently that in his next UNP government, the honest JVP MPs should hold ministerial portfolio. Not much is expected from the nephew of the Wise Old Fox. He is patting the back of the JVP to insinuate a JVP-UNP ‘deal’ to create the erosion of JVP cadres.

The misguided UNPers who think they are elites by virtue of being UNP and the slaves of the Pohottuwa seem to believe that it is the birth right of their politicians to loot a range of institutions from the Central bank to the tea kiosk by the road scraping the last bit of life, flesh and blood in those institutions. They also seem to believe that it is the birth duty of the JVP to scream from the top of their voices exposing those crimes in Parliament.  They will vote for the old favorites for personal gain or out of blind habit and believe that the JVP should come to the rescue when political and financial fraud knocks on the door.

If not for Left Politics the decent, humane society that we hope to build will never be realized. Whether Left Politics will lead to a President or the formation of a government, if not for their existence many of our ideals of a civilized society will not be defended: our freedoms, safe guarding public funds, our women, our sexual identity freedoms will all be defended only and finally by Left Politics.

JVP That ‘Sees’ Women

The formidable contribution of the speeches made by women at the JVP rally held amidst thousands were both conducive to the intellect and the heart. Those woman speakers not engaging in gutter mouthed politics to titillate the gallery offered something to be learnt by men and women both. For seven decades, the diminished female participation in politics has been aptly covered in the elitist fall of Sirima and Chandrika’s saree. JVP breathed a new life to that throttled spirit of women on that stage.

The JVP has managed to deliver to women what the “decoration women politicians” could never do from the UNP, that grand old party. Let’s also not forget the conscience of the Medamulana clan probably does not even house a thought on women or equality in their upstairs.

’What Will Happen?

Anyone and everyone who is politically conscious ask each other the question: “what will happen?” The heavy and unmistakable shadow of populism is cast over Sri Lanka unsatisfied by an Anura Candidacy, Gota Candidacy, Ranil Candidacy or a Sajith Candidacy.

The victor of this story would be the one who manages politics and populism. In this anomalous political environment, the need is not just for Left Politics Survival. Left Politics ought to flourish.

Anura’s voice, rising from the shores of the Galle Face ignites a hope of that flourishing.

In a society that truly does not know what tomorrow brings, that hope alone ignites more hope.

Dr Ranil Wickremasinghe the Leader of the Elite, Anglican , Vellala and the new addition Wahabi Faction has thrown his weight behind JVP Anura Kumara..

In fact Dr Wickremasinghe is is serious talks with his Inner Team to back the JVP Leader as their common Candidate according to the UNP friendly Websites..

What a fabulous Political Development for our Nation……What a marvelous Return on Dr Ranil’s Investment..

The National Hangman is suffering from heart disease as well as from past immoral living though he claims to be a vegetarian. Hitler too was a vegetarian.

Without your walking sideways give us the reason(s) as to why AKD is not fit for the job if elected.

        NV,

Selective amnesia again. Remember ’71 and ’87-89? Was there any self critical analysis and taking responsibility? Looks like 60,000+ lives are not sufficient for you and your yahapalanista ilk. It appears even what AKD got paid via Malik Samarawickrema in 2014-15 to plunge the country to current mess is not good enough. Have you also got a plot next to that Ireland property?

I don’t like the comments of Udaya Gammanpila of SLPP on newsfirst! “Udaya Gammanpila notes with utter confidence that the only way to stop Gotabaya Rajapaksa becoming the president of this country is by assassinating him”

Are these Rajapaksas trying to stage an attack on Gotabaya Rajapaksa and sacrifice some poor citizens who show up at their election rallies for propaganda!?

Also note what Gota Rajapaksa has said!
“Gotabaya Rajapaksa Informs President Sirisena That his Intelligence Unit Has Uncovered Alleged Plot by a Northern Terror Group Targeting Him Along With Douglas Devananda and Karuna Ammaan; Sniper Rifle Imported From Malaysia For this Alleges Gota” – dbsjeyaraj.com

The Rajapaksa psychopaths are capable of anything…

Hope our state intelligence in keeping an eye on these criminals…

        Anonymous,
You are right. Rajapakse’s are capabale of doing such assassination attempt. Gotapaya already requested police protection and Gotapaya has well trained experts within military and paramilitary (Karuna, Douglas) to execute such drama in order to come power. Sirisena used the same technique without any assassination attempt but during his campaign but Gotapaya will execute such attempt to hurt (slightly) to him.
It is sad a large number of Sinhala people still in the dark believing their drama.

Finally JVP too came to a conclusion to contest for presidency without a system change. In my perspective JVP has taken a foolish decision to go alone without forming an alliance. Under the existing system what someone can expect…?

Looks like an antic similar to 20th amendment……………..AKD could be the real saviour of the forces behind Ranil who is facing a real challenge within UNP under the leadership of Sajith. AKD might be able to neutralise Sajith if a deal could be made (may be it’s already done) between AKD, Ranil, Rajitha, Champike, Hakeem, Badurdeen, Sambandhan et al. Fascinating drama unfolding……….

          “Who butchered 60,000 lives?”

Not me, however one or two notorious war criminals in uniform were in search and destroy team, Matale pit Gota, Sarath Fonseka, Janaka Perera, …..

          Who butchered 18,000 in 1971?
Not me, its weeping widow’s Sinhala/Buddhist armed forces.

Who butchered more than (estimated) 40,000 innocent people in the last leg of the war?
Not me, some of them were part of the armed forces which killed more than 60,000 between 1987 and 1991, including Svandra.

I am sure you have nothing to do with war crimes. However I am still not sure about your active participation in riots of 1958, 1961, 1977, 1983, 2013, 2018, 2019, …..

July 1983 was orchestrated by your master JRJ with his goons like Cyril Matthew, and Sirinal De Mel of JSS fame. I saw M H Mohamed’s goons burning property in Borella. Since you mentioned it, unlike you and your ilk of armchair pundits, I worked from July 1983 to August 1984 as a youth volunteer helping affected families. Bradman Weerakoon, the then commissioner general of essential services commended me for my volunteer work. My profit was the self satisfaction gained from serving fellow Sri Lankans in their hour of need. What did you do? Stayed licking JRJs back side?

              I exonerate no one.
As you are suffering from selective amnesia you have forgotten my comments dealing with war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The country needs to deal with it’s dark ages starting from 5th April 1971 to date inclusive. No matter who did what when every crime committed by all sides, state security forces, Green Tigers, Vigilantes, Muslim Home Guards, JVP, DJV, LTTE, ….. and all other terrorists, IPKF, …………….. should be recorded, investigated, ……………… put through Truth and Reconciliation process, own up, apologise, …………………….. and go free, only when they apologise and beg for mercy one should be granted pardon.

Please copy and save the above, else you will be typing the same question again and again and stop barking up the wrong tree.

“Also you seem to propagate the lie of the discredited 40,000 which confirms my suspicion that you have always been in cahoots with separatist murderers.”

This was a figure given by the UN appointed commission. Unlike some of you I do not believe pigs can fly.
By the way if you are so sure this figure was discredited let me have the revered figure, please choose from the the following set:
              Zero
              1

              or Maybe multiples of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, …………….

                NV,

Please read Review of “Report of the Secretary-General’s Panel of Experts on Accountability in Sri Lanka” by Sir Desmond de Silva, QC. (UK) as Chairman, with Sir Geoffrey Nice QC. (UK) and David M. Crane on your favoured number, 40,000. This number was first mooted by your political master Ranil W, then it was picked up by Gordon Weiss in his fictional story. Darusman added it to his report to provide legitimacy to the number. You and others of your ilk parrot it to create a FACT (The path that number travelled is quite interesting for students of politics and international affairs). I wonder why you didn’t pick up Rayappu Joseph’s number of 150,000. It looks more impressive doesn’t it? Of course you wouldn’t take UN factual reporting on the ground during the latter stages of the conflict. That doesn’t suit your agenda. Discerning readers know how UN systems have been abused by special interest groups and powerful countries to undermine small and weaker nations. So don’t try to preach garbage.

THis is desperate news coming from JVP’s deaperation.
    =
But he will fail miserably because voters will see the obvious link between the timing of the JVP show to coincide with Sajith P’s announcement and campaign to be president. Will this represent a next generation confrontation between the two sides. Will Sajith, if he ever becomes president, follow his father’s footsteps to finish off the little JVP?
    =
The JVP’s record of murders of intellectuals (Thevis Guruge and Premakeerhti to name two) and poor working class people( nurses, bus drivers) in 1971 and between 1987-1990 will see to that it will be a long time before he or anyone else representing the JVP is trusted by the Sri Lankan people. He will get the nearly 100,000 votes of the hard core members and their families the previous candidates of the JVP has managed .
    =
It is appropriate that AKD started his campaign from the Galle Face and not from Ireland or other places in Europe where he owns significant real estate.. Galle Face would be the suitable place to start the campaign, because when he fails he could ‘jump in the lake’ from there!

The crowds at Galle Face is clear evidence that people are beginning to realise that both the Rajapaksa and Sirisena regimes have failed them. Despite several indictments for corruption, not one politician has been successfully prosecuted. Now it turns out that one candidate for President may not even be eligible to contest in the election, again due to questionable citizenship documents.
The question is how many votes can the JVP alliance muster? There is a risk that splitting the votes could result in an outcome that will continue the old politics. Or worse another incompetent government could emerge.
In any case, the Galle Face crowd is a warning to the traditional parties.

    Arundathie,
When your essay titled “I will vote for JVP”, first appeared on CT, I asked several questions which went unanswered. Then, when CT began to present the coverage of NPPM event with noticeable exuberance, I expressed some concerned about bitter realities public might have to face if they come to power by even a remote chance. I didn’t get any satisfactory rebuttal for them either.

Yes, if one knows how to touch right emotional buttons at right moments, anybody can be easily persuaded even to the extent of becoming a martyr. “71 & again ’88-’89 insurgencies that led many unsuspecting talented & intelligent youths to sacrifice their lives for something AKD led JVP has now given up as “fire” stand as more than enough evidences for how emotions can impede logic & rationality. What more to say about rural women flocking while breast-feeding when even A Rathana could almost set whole nation on fire with racially motivated but silly fast unto death campaign! Din’t we see over thousands of equally emotionally charged women came to complain about failing to conceive?

It is true that higher level human norms & ethics such as democracy, free of corruption, HR, etc are at a constant struggle with humans’ own instinctive selfish interests that have been hardwired into the brain by over a half billion years of evolution for the urge of survival. Therefore, the necessity for a kid to shout saying the “king is naked” exists at all times in order to maintain the higher standards of social institutions. But, when Marxists howl for fairness, the experience over the globe tells us that it is safer to be skeptical.

Arundathie Sangakkara “Anura’s voice, rising from the shores of the Galle Face ignites a hope of that flourishing”

Anura’s voice, for that matter all JVPers, starting from Rohana W always ignited hopes. But sadly, they try to do wonders with a system that failed the country during the last forty years (since 1978). What we need now is a “System Changer” not a “Terminator ” or a “Miracle Maker”

I think its evident by whole MR-Pohottuwa fiasco that a political party means nothing. People vote for individuals who they believe in.

Therefore, I think we should consider JVP not as a party but as a set of people who in the recent past have stood for their principles irrespective of building popularity.

They spoke against the UNP when they went astray and yet supported the UNP in good legislature without being out-and-out anarchists like MR’s Goons.

So for the common man who is discouraged by the state of governance in SL, please consider guys like AKD. It is of my belief that once the president becomes merely a figurehead after the new constitution, a leader like him will just publicly keep the ruling party in check.

Where did JVP get the funds to bring the people to fill Galle Face?!
AKD has delusions of grandeur which have been cultivated by USAID funded advisors in the Cesspit Parliament, also to promote LGBTQ Rights (of course nothing wrong with this but a bit strange as the priority should be handling the higher education crisis in the country, especially as JVP came from the Universities and knows the importance of research and development. However, AKD washed hands off FSP which is headed by and Australian plant to destroy the University system in Lanka.
The JVP like all the other corrupt politicians in the Cesspit Parliament has lost the plot. As it was able to make money from the US brokered Fake reconciliation UNP-SLFP, Bondscam Ranil-Rajapaksa corruption racket with lots of Parliamentary Privileges and Perks for TNA, JVP and ultra corrupt Muslim politicos.

JVP has failed to address the crisis in the Universities and Higher Education system and has played Constitution

They all know that the so-called Para-Sinhala Para-Buddhist of Aryan National dress is a fake, a symbol of the crooks to hoodwink the low IQ, mean IQ 79 masses.

Even Gota, seem to realize this.

We were wrong and cheated in 2015 we were united at.that time purely for the country’s sake. The man in execute power if he is a true Buddhist still getting blessing from these prelets has ever thought what he promised to ven Sobitha Thero and the people.they had 100 days program, even they will bring back the looted money, but after all they all same lot.
On the bind scam money who benefited not Tamils all these greedy sinhala power hungers .
You modoyos live with the realities am not fan of VP but he sacrificed his whole family, even his parents has to die in 4th floor while Rohana’s 5 children and wife still look after by democratic country.

Kugan either you are lying or just plain ignorant. VP’s parents were well looked after by the Sinhala Buddhist government. Also you must be well aware of what luxury VP and his family were living in while his ‘beloved people of Tamil Eelam’ suffered at his hands.

” Also you must be well aware of what luxury VP and his family were living in while his ‘beloved people of Tamil Eelam’ suffered at his hands”

Do you think the people are so dumb they don’t know how VP lived and died, (one of the Brigadier chopping his forehead with an axe)?

The important question you b***s carriers purposely avoid is what did gota and his goons including this coward (who was hiding behind VP’s fat bum from IPKF) do with cash and gold looted from VP’s Fort Knox?
You seem to be aware of where VP hung and dried his underpants yet now you seem unaware of what happened to the cash and gold, strange.

Why have you changed your pseudonym and avatar?

I seriously think he is a strong and genuine contender. I myself may consider voting for AKD. The only hitch is that his party is known to practice “communist ideology’ which is the only drawback otherwise he easily ticks more boxes than the others.

………If you analyse the three amazing years of R.Sampanthan you will realize that he has hardly taken any opposition to the Government…….
    So says Arundathie!

But how could he oppose the Government? He held a unique portfolio carved out for him and him alone by Ranil.W.
He was the Minister of the LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION!
It was a new Ministry with all the perks etc. Like Ministers he also doled out false promises.
Unemployed Graduates will get their appointment next Deepavali…..
All Political Prisoners will be released by next Thai Pongal…
All war widows will get this get that etc etc.

He played his innings well. But this time around he will be out hit wicket!

First of all, JVP must stop utter barbaric ragging at universities. The reason JVP is contesting the election, is because Ranil hamu has given his permission to AKD. Member parties (UNP, TNA, JVP, Muslim parties) of Yahapalana retards’ plot is to contest elections separately and form the coalition afterwards.
    /
The whole world knows that TNA was a fake opposition. Yahapalana retards have manipulated laws and regulations of parliament to make TNA the opposition. Allegedly, some TNA parliamentarians are dual citizens.

Can a leopard change its spots?

How many people are likely to sleepwalk to the polling booth?

Is the 1971 putsch already part of our forgotten history?

Did we learn any lessons from the 1987-89 cock-up?

I don’t see any of the other candidates flustered by the buth-parcel mob.

If JVP is to win, they must expose. there are so many accusations for JVP from others. Those accusations are more than just political mud slinging.

Good writing by Arundathie. Quite as good as Thisuri. Now why is that, I wonder?

Finally, there seemed to be a leader worth pointing to one’s child from one’s shoulders. Many rural villagers had travelled to witness this event. There were breastfeeding women, clutching their tiny infants close, witnessing the unfolding of history.

*** Arundathie from your name I take it you are a Tamil and married to a Sinhalese (not the Cricketer.).
Dont have too much hope. Let us wait and see. This election is the last chance and Sri Lanka is fighting for its survival.

    Thank you Arundathie Sangakkara for the article. The first two sentences says it all {“The Galle Face green was filled, not just with heads yesterday. It was filled with heads that were not empty”}
We, layLankans, have been manipulated into thinking/believing that our heads are empty and so we have no choice but pick one from a Rouges Gallery of the Lankan Elites.
JVP is on the path to change this mindset. It is far too early to speculate on forming the next GoSL or coalition. JVP is not AKD. They must show that there are lots of AKDs in JVP.
It will be prudent to straightaway state the position on the Gnanasara Thera’s rightwing extreme nationalist themes which mirror SLPP policies.
