Withdrawal of the Military from the North and East during the Parliamentary Election 2020
The continued presence of the Military in the Northern Province would be hampering a free and fair Election on August 5th. May I suggest with all humility that the Military be restricted to their barracks during the Election? I fail to see the need for such concentrated presence of the Armed Forces in the North at this time.
Yesterday (28th July 2020) there was a surprising incident. While I was on stage at an Election Meeting at Gurunagar last night around 8 pm 14 soldiers attired in completely black uniforms (Black Cats?) on Motor Cycles (two each in seven motor cycles) drove into the arena of the Meeting made disturbing noise with their raised engines, perambulated around and waited until I left the meeting after a few minutes. Then when my car went out of the area of the meeting the seven motor cycles with 14 men on them rode around my car, parked for some time on the sides, cut into the path of the car and drove on single file in front until they disappeared into a side lane. My Police were with me in the car. I am not sure if they wanted to convey a message to me. But such activities just before the Election, though they would not scare an old veteran like me, might convey the wrong message to the People which might curtail the voting process.
I hope this incident would be investigated and acted upon. May the Parliamentary Election 2020 in the Northern Province be free and fair undisturbed by the presence of the Army. Thank you.

However even 10 years after the war, hundreds of thousands of them remain , treating the local Tamil population like subjugated people. I heard, even the funds allocated for North were not used by Wigie s adminstration. He could do lot more good if he really wanted to. A man who lived and colombo worked as an highly educated legal advocate, he could do lot more for the northern people. That is what we go tto see during her tenure.

Wigie could discuss tamil issues even more pro actively if he really wanted to… .. but as is the case with MANY OTHER senior politiciansi in the country. Nobody likes people who get elected from one platform and then jump to another.
It doesn’t justify his assassination, but your defense that he was against separation is irrelevant. He switched to SLFP and still later contested the DDC election on the UNP ticket.
His son goes around claiming that the TULF was afraid he would win, but that is baloney because Tamil youths were angry even at the TULF and Amirthalingam for trying to legitimize a paltry DDC after winning on a mandate for ‘Eelam.’ Still, it was the TULF that would win any election and the party had no worries about about any UNP win. In that emotionally charged environment, after the 1977 riots had been instigated by the UNP, anyone contesting under the UNP would get an electoral shellacking.

Mr T was approached by the Tamil Congress and he won the seat. His vision was to serve his community as best as he saw fit. Given the man’s lack of faith in the Tamil nationalist politics, I see nothing very objectionable. He did not go back on any pledge that he made, certainly not the way TULF did in 1977 or for that matter in 1965.

Just to share the knowledge I have with you that my Father published a paper then in 1952 evlauting Separatism/Self Rule/Devolution. Made a case if such thing as Tamil/Sinhala issues to be avoided and to have the estate Tamils included as an entity in the post colonial solution that be economically sustainable then he drawn a SL map in the same article as to how that should be divided….and also made the case the Federal solution will not be granted by the GOSL ever.
