BBS’s Latest Target- Muslim Dress Code

By Sharmini Serasinghe

Sharmini Serasinghe

With the ‘Halal’ issue exhausting all the hot-air being blown around it, now here comes the Muslim dress code to the fore. Muslim women are now being pinched, pushed and spat on because of their choice of dress in the form of a long loose over-garment called the ‘abaya’.

It was not until the effervescent Saffron Brigade (Bodu Bala Sena) drew attention to it did anyone pay much heed to the ‘abaya’ which is a common sight especially in urban areas of the country. Upon further investigation into the relatively recent popularity of this outer-garment favoured by some Muslim ladies in Lanka one finds significantly varying reasons for it.

Lankan Muslims

Of the three leading ethnic groups in the country it is only the Muslims of Lanka who bear a religious rather than a linguistic, ethnic or racial identity. Unlike the Sinhalese and Tamils, the Moslems cannot generally be identified by their language, dress or cultural identity. Therefore Lankan Muslims until recently assimilated inconspicuously into the rest of Lankan society and were never regarded as a ‘threat’ by the ‘other’.

It is interesting to note that this relatively new trend by some Lankan Muslims to embrace the Middle Eastern styles of the Arab dress code in the form of the ‘abaya’ and ‘thobe’ (long loose shirt for men) etc., is especially seen amongst the younger and more urban Muslim men and women. Others among the older generation still favour the sari draped in the customary Muslim fashion and shirt, trouser or sarong for the men.

This trend of a ‘different’ dress code denotes a stronger outward expression of the Muslim religious identity. Therefore it has drawn greater attention to the Lankan Muslims rather negatively in the eyes of some, as a conspicuous social ‘other’ as it makes them more ‘visible’ and different. This unfortunately seems to have formed a psychological barrier even between some among other communities and the Lankan Muslims.

In civilized society one’s attire constitutes a very significant form of non-verbal communication, more so in a multi-cultural one, where what one wears conveys nonverbal clues about his or her personality. In such a context the ‘abaya’ and ‘thobe’ which are ‘culturally new’ to Lanka, appear to have riled not only the Saffron Brigade but some among other communities as well.

It appears that to them the messages conveyed through this attire is “we are different from you” or “we are not one of you”. Hence the general message conveyed through this attire to the ‘other’ is interpreted to be one of aloofness, from other ethnic communities.

I personally know several Muslim ladies who until recently dressed like the ‘other’. However since donning the ‘abaya’ they have been socially marginalised by some. They are no longer invited by their former schoolmates to parties or other social gatherings. From what I have been told, it appears that the ‘others’ feel uncomfortable with their friends now covered from head to toe.

This is indeed a sad state of affairs and does not augur well for peace and unity in a multi ethno-religious country; but it is not an issue that time cannot heal. Nevertheless in the interim this could provide sufficient ammunition to the likes of the Saffron Brigade to drive their point home. This in turn makes the Lankan Muslim today, extremely vulnerable through their conspicuous visibility to the psychotics.

Lanka’s Eastern Muslims

On a recent visit to the Ampara district in the East Coast I gained a much wider perspective of how and why some Lankan Moslems have embraced the Arabian mode of attire. And strangely I didn’t see as many dressed in the ‘abaya’ and ‘thobe’ as I expected to, in an area predominantly populated by Muslims. Save a few the others whom I met and spoke to were dressed in sari, shalwar kameez, sarong, trousers and shirt.

From what I gathered it appears, that given the significant number of Lankan Moslems who have lived and worked in the Middle East, where they had to adhere to a strict dress code prevalent in some of those countries, on returning home, continued the dress code.

This has now become a ‘trend’. It makes them stand out as financially well-to-do, due to their employment abroad, and therefore sends a silent message to others in their community, that they now belong to a higher social status. The middle class Muslims refer to them derogatorily as the “new rich”.

There are other economic reasons as well. I met a mother of four daughters Aiza in Pottuvil who herself was dressed in a sari draped in the customary Muslim fashion. She confessed that since her offspring decided on their own to don the ‘abaya’, as they regarded it ‘fashionable’, there was no longer a need to spend money on a variety of clothing since this long loose over-garment covered it all.

The advantage of the ‘abaya’ says Aiza is that one could wear even faded and darned clothes beneath it, and no one will ever know. Even the men, she says, don’t require many shirts, trousers and sarongs as before, since a minimum of two sets of the ‘Thobe’ (long loose shirt and trouser or sarong) are sufficient. As a result the family as a whole is now able to afford three square meals a day on the money they save on clothes.

Then there is another section among the Muslims that attributes the new Muslim dress code to a heightened awareness of ‘Muslim issues’ around the world and therefore a greater sense of membership in the global community of all Muslims. This is a relatively small section of Muslims with a ‘political’ mindset, who displays bouts of intolerance and extremism against the minority Sinhalese and Tamils in the East, in an attempt to scare them away from the area. As a result the handful of Sinhalese and Tamil residents in the area has formed a bond in unity against the aggressor.

Whatever the reasons Lankan Muslims have for adopting a ‘different’ mode of attire, is well within their rights as human beings. After all Lanka is still supposed to be a democracy and a civilized society where all are equal, therefore no one has the right to intrude into the privacy and freedom of another.

Let those rabble rousers be advised against using superficial and lame excuses such as a dress-code of a minority community to drive a wedge between our society and create unwarranted mayhem as a result. Politicians of the past have created enough chaos between the Sinhalese and Tamils let not their successors expand on that by creating disunity with the Muslims as well.

I think it is more due to the recent religious awareness among muslim women they are wearing the Hijab / Abaya

Why is it that no one complains about vast majority of the Sri Lankans adopting the western attire and have turned their backs on traditional clothing? Many don’t wear sarong or sari to work and people are okay with this. Many have left the traditional Sri Lankan way of life and are adopting western values and practises.

We are all okay these changes taking place in our society. So why all these fuss about the types of clothing worn by muslims?

Out of 1.2 million Sri Lankan women working in the Arab countries, nearly one million are Sinhala-Buddhist. According to Arabs, these women are born to work for them as slaves (Nannies, House Maids and Cleaners/janitors). These Sinhala-Buddhist women are exploited, abused, raped and humiliated by the Arabs. Hundreds of these Sinhala-Buddhist housemaids have become pregnant, often after rapes by the Arabs, producing Sinhala-Buddhist children. Why not the Budda Balu Sena stop sending the Sinhala-Buddhist women to the Arab countries as slaves instead of attacking the innocent Muslims here in SL.

Nabil, now you are coming to the point. That is why I always maintain that the BBS should focus its attention on exploiting the natural resources that are available in a country. In this respect too, politicians are corrupt. When people who are encouraged in exploiting the natural resources for the development of the economy of the country, the politicians expect a big share by way of commission, etc. That is why Federalism on the Canadian or American model is required to check and monitor the activities of the corrupt politicians. There will be unity in diversity in Federalism. In a way I must thank you for allowing the Sinhalese exremists to think about deeply about the suitability of Federalism, which will put an end to all these nonsense.

Which nabil are you referring to, the Nabil in Orange grotto is a scapegoat “Diaper republic” barbarian. They are in the process of outwitting the Sinhala racists by pouring sarcastic remarks on the Sinhala by vitiating the Muslim fundamentals, silently coerced by the Colombo Tribune.

A database is acquired with ips traced leads to the Diaspora friendly links, no doubt.

Dear Nabil, it is not fair to criticize the Sinhala-Buddhist women in such a manner. They have difficulties in life. We should not forget when Rizana was executed, it is the Sinhalese and Tamils who really raised their voices over the barbaric punishment. After all, the Sinhalese-Buddhist women are our sisters. You should not forget that a great number of housemaids from Bangaaldesh and Indonesia too were executed and Sri Lankans too were concerned of this. You should not also forget how Pakistani actress Veena Malik condemns the Islamic clergy over some rapes of children who had come for prayers. She is also a social worker and concerned of the poor people in Pakistan. There will be a time for everyone. The root cause is our politicians who have failed to pay attention on the poor families. We are living in a changing world and should accommodate everyone in a civilized manner. Exposing people engaged in illegal activities will not amount to uncivilized manner, because the motive of exposing is to rectify or correct them and bring them to justice.

It is a well-known fact that the royalty in Arabia (for example House of Saud) keep hundreds of women from all over the world in their concubines as playthings. This is essentially a refined version of prostitution that reflects poorly on Islamic values.

Lester, again just because the Royal Family does it doesn’t mean Islam is bad just as much the Bill Clinton/ Lewinsky affair doesn’t make Christianity bad.

thought, now don’t tell me its one incident vs. many because if you go back in history men with wealth and power were always players.

            0

I did not say a harem is bad. You are missing the point completely. The point is that women have no meaningful status in Islam. They are only toys, to be used and abused by men.

Lester, what about the punishment of stoning to death to Muslim women – a message that women are almost treated like animals. Even dogs are looked after very well by their masters and even ladies.

In the spirit of Humanity we are all one people. The classification due a dress code that, we are different from you or we are not one of you is an inferior mindset and damaging to the growth of a nation. This explains the regression in social and economic development in the country. The uneducated under privileged social elements (commonly known as BBS and their sympathizers) play a crucial role with the Sri Lankan politicians in power. Politicians use these social outcasts to get their dirty work done. It is the belief that change is not yet possible for whatever reason, and so one leans back and resigns to… waiting. Waiting that somebody else comes along and does the changing for us.

The women cover themselves in Abaya (the black or coloured cloak) or in loose clothing and cover their heads with a shawl, as required by the religion. Many SL Muslims are being more educated and knowledgable about the requirements of the religion, that even the modern young girls of Colombo are willing and according to their own wishes have realized the need to cover themselves properly, that they too have started to do so.
I believe that others should respect their choice given the high rise in crimes and rapes and the loss of values in society.

You say that “women cover themselves in Abaya (the black or coloured cloak) or in loose clothing and cover their heads with a shawl, as required by the religion. Many SL Muslims are being more educated and knowledgable about the requirements of the religion.”

Are you trying to say that erudite intellectuals like Deshabandhu Jezima Ismail and Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in Singapore Her Excellency Ferial Ashraff are not “educated and knowledgable about the requirements of the religion” as they don’t wear the abaya?

The BBS wants all BUDHIST ladies to wear MINI-SKIRT. It is because when girls come to listen to BANA sitting in front of them, the BBS monks who is seated in opposite facing those girls will say the following bana to her: ” THAGE CHIN CHIN MALE DKAA MA GE MANARAM POLLA GASSI GASSI NAKITI” what a superb idea is this. This mantra was told by a BBS friend of mine. Those naughty BBS monks are dressed exposing their sexy body to girls. We respect the real Buddhist monks whose dress are decently covered in a highly respectable manner. Load BUDDAH never said males to expose their sexy body to tempt girls and make them vulgar.

Thank you Sharmini for a very fair and equitable article. it is people like you who are impartial who restore the trust in humanity in these trying times.
the main reason why Muslim women wear abaya and hijab is because it is requested by their religion. As pointed out in various comments above it is a direct order from Allah; and the Muslims are more aware of the Quranic teachings and their religious obligations than before.
Besides it also has many advantages:
    1. the foremost is that it is less attractive, covers the beauty of the woman from men and therefore it’s protective.
    2. contrary to your findings actually it brings about a sense of equality among the rich and poor. When one wears the abaya no one knows what their economical status is, unlike other dresses.
    3. yes it is very economical
    4. it is very convenient and takes so little time to get dressed.
    5. convenient in any climate – can be very loose so less warm, on the other hand useful very cold too!

Ah Dr Reffai who writes to the Daily News and advocates a lot of silly things at times which i will never agree

However as right thinking person i will defend with all my might for Muslims or anyone else to wear their dress without the racist BBS perverts preventing it

if BBS is so concerened about Sri Lanka let them fight to close the Casinos and brothels (mushrooming under ‘rooms a/c ,non a/c) all over the land, but alas they wont do it as they too are apart of it!

Thank you peace lover. I am sure you do a lot of silly things yourself in the name of spirituality and since you haven’t told us, sadly we cannot make a judgment call.

Dr. Refai has a MB.BS, studied in one of the better known girls schools in Kandy and knows what she is talking about. It’s a bit of a stretch to call her silly, because what is considered silly and sensible depends on how we perceive the world.

      Dear Dr Reffai,

As I have notice, your comments are very impartial, and also to the point.

Does Shariyah law allow women to go for a divorce and under what circumstances ?

        Tharu Paba,

I don’t know if you are a man or woman but I’m willing to take a bet that you are a woman.

You seem to be obsessed by divorce. Why do you want to divorce your spouse and unable to? Poor soul.

You sound like a frustrated and bitter person hiding behind Buddhism not having any idea of what Buddhism is all about. Or else you would not be making such contradictory comments.

As you ‘wisely’ suggested, people like you should keep away from columns like this.

          Mahadanamuththa,

Oh no I’m not obsessed by divorce. Let Dr Refai answer my question.
You don’t have to but in to each and every one’s comment just because you are “Mahadana Muththa” !

There is a sinhala proverb “Pandithayata edandeth yanna baha”!

The writer Sharmini is a divorcee and that’s why I ask the question.
If she was born a muislim, she would not have been able to divorce her first husband under the “Shariyah” law, and marry again.!:)

            Tharu Paba,

Sharmini was not born a muslim so she can divorce many husbands and marry many husbands as she wishes to.

What is your problem? Are you jealous?

              Mahadanamuththa/Kattakarawala,

Both you guys have missed the point. Sharmini talks on topics with half baked knowledge.

She does not know what buddhism is nor what Islam is.

            Hi Tharu Paba,

Your obsession is not shariya law but with the writer Sharmini.

You seem to have two problems here. Sharmini’s face and the fact that she’s a divorcee and married again.

If you are a woman = you are obviously jealous of Sharmini’s “pretty” face

If you are a man = you are mad because she married another another man and not you.

              Kattakarawala,

You are overly concerned about Sharmini. Are you her ex?
If so, the only bond you have with her is the displeasure you both have for the colour BLUE !

Her ex had to serve a two and a half year jail term for his scribbles which displeased the “Chaura Regina” !

By “pretty” face, I meant beauty sans brains ! A clear example of VANITY ! :)

Why do monks wear safron robes? Isn’t that too segregation on the lines ‘we are different’. Why is Aryan Sinhala dress and purple Saluwa worn by the President including his male family members? Doesn’t that too signify different to the rest? How come the Bikkuni’s dress all covered and shave their heads? Isn’t that too a form of discrimination against women? Why only take issue with Abaya, Hijab and Niqab?

In Sharmini’s research done to write this article, it is clear that she missed the mark on all the reasons attributed to why women resort to wearing Abaya, which in its core is a divine law as stated in Holy Quran, which she says are extremist views. How funny? The Holy Quran is translated into so many different languages worldwide, including Sinhalese language, which she has completely ignored or missed in her research. Giving all the wrong reasons, like covering up darned clothes, new rich Muslims who worked un Middle East countries continue with the dress code as it is trendy, it is cheaper to wear Abaya, and not have to buy so many dresses, etc. What a shame this article never touched on the primary reason.

God who created everything in pairs, (again a Quranic revelation) from all plants to animals, microbes, even an atom (Neutron, Proton), also laid down laws to govern each and every creation for procreation and survival of species. We call these laws instinctive behaviour. In the same way women were asked to cover their beauty from strangers, and lower their gaze in their presence. The only males she can reveal herself wearing normal clothes are father, brothers, husband, sons, nephews and grandsons. This is the type of research that should have been done to get to the bottom of it, from where it originates and why so. There are many more associated matters that could be drawn for discussion from the Quranic texts, but better left for another discussion.

What I would really like to see is a translation in English of the Tripitaka and other Pali writings for us to understand what is Buddhism, nd its core teachings.

Even though most of the above is untrue, it is the Islamic view of women. Can we blame them, when they are just following the example of Muhammed?

    1. He massacred and exterminated all the Jews from Arabia and instigated hatred between his followers and the Jews that has lasted for over 1400 years and has cost millions of lives. Prior to him Arabs and Jews lived in harmony and were allies.

    2. He sent assassins to kill his critiques in the middle of night, who committed no other crime than composing poetries ridiculing his holiness, even if they where old or mothers of several infants.

    3. (*) He raped a Jewish girl 40 years younger than him whom he captured in one of his raids in the same day that he killed her husband, her father and many of her relatives.

    4. (*) He enriched himself by looting caravans, killing the men, usurping their properties and SELLING their wives and daughters as slaves.

      LESTER,
I HAVE IN MANY OF MY COMMENTS, HOW STUPID YOU ARE.
SINCE YOU HAVE DEGRADED PROPHET MUHAMMAD I FELT I SHOULD MAKE A COMMENT.

      HERE IS WHAT MAHATMA GHANDI SAID OF HIM;

Mahatma Gandhi, statement published in “Young India”, 1924:

“I wanted to know the best of the life of one who holds today an undisputed sway over the hearts of millions of mankind… I became more than ever convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet the scrupulous regard for pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. When I closed the second volume (of the Prophet’s biography), I was sorry there was not more for me to read of that great life.”

I wonder whether you know MAHATMA GHANDI WAS A HINDU.

Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869) French poet and statesman.

q “Philosopher, orator, apostle, legislator, warrior, conqueror of ideas, restorer of rational dogmas, of a cult without images; the founder of twenty terrestrial empires and of one spiritual empire, that is Muhammad. As regards all standards by which human greatness may be measured, we may well ask, is there any man greater than he?

Gandhi had good intentions, but he was not pragmatic. That is why Bose assassinated him. If Bose had not assassinated him, the Muslims would have demanded even more land, and Pakistan would be 3 or 4 times bigger than it is now, simply because Gandhi thought he could win Muslim support with more and more appeasments.

All I need to know about Muhammed is that he slaughtered 600 Jews with the sword, in a single day. And, he married a 9 yr old girl when he was 33.

Now, you can put Atila the Hun in a cathedral, make her kneel at the alter, and confess her sins, but at the end of the day she is still a murderer. Your Prophet is no different.

Anyway either Lester is out of his mind or a whole lot of famous people like Ghandiji, Annie Besant, the poets Goethe,Tagore and Sarojini Naidu , writers like George Bernard Shaw, Stanley Lane Poole, Thomas Carlyle, historians like Gibbon and Simon Ocklay, Lamartine;even Napolean Bonaparte must be for praising and waxing eloquent the noble prophet of Islaam. Strangely it is this same type of sewer talk that is appearing in different countries with the Zionist thread stringing them together. BTW I suggest that Lester visit the site http://alhittin.com/2013/03/06/geert-wilders-party-member-arnoud-van-doorn-accepts-islam/.
Here was an Islam Hater like Lester who accepted his mistake of slighting Islam. In his own words I quote: ..“In my own close circle people have known that I have been actively researching the Qur’an, Hadith, Sunnah and other writings for almost a year now,” he said.
“In addition, I have had numerous conversations with Muslims about the religion.”
Driven by his party’s anti-Islam discourse, Doorn decided to dig in for the truth about the religion himself.
“I have heard so many negative stories about Islam, but I am not a person who follows opinions of others without doing my own research,” he said.
“Therefore, I have actually started to deepen my knowledge of the Islam out of curiosity.
“My colleague Aboe Khoulani from the City Council in The Hague has brought me further into contact with the as-Soennah mosque, which has guided me even further.”
A member of the Dutch parliament and The Hague city council, Doorn’s name has long been associated with Wilders’ anti-Islam, far-right PVV party.
Wilders himself is known for his rants against Islam, Muslims and the Noble Qur’an very much like this Islamaphobe.

Just to elucidate further Arnoud van Doorn was a confidante and right hand man of the Bigot Gert Wilders.

Recently, in Passikkudah beach, the daughter-in-law of a DIG was bathing in public. Obviously she was’t in Abaya. What little cloth she was wearing was wet and clinging closely to her curved body.

A minister’s son and his friends got turned on. The started taking off their own clothes in public.

The end result was a vicious fight between the DIG’s son and the Minister’s son and their friends.

Yet, many people would not appreciate the importance of Abaya for women. How can they, because it comes from Islam?

      Lionel,

So you think the DIG’s daughter-in-law should have been wearing an abaya while bathing in public?

You don’t think the abaya will cling close to her body when it is wet?

Come on Lionel, surely you can do better than that!
