Bellicose Rhetoric – Recipe For A ‘Black July’

By Karikalan S. Navaratnam

Karikalan S. Navaratnam

Emperor Napolean  knew that  French instincts were militaristic and domineering and  he was resolved to gratify them.  E. Lipson,  Historian, writing on (Louis) Napolean III (1852-1870), the nephew of Napolean, the Great.

Sinhala-Buddhist instincts are somewhat similar to French instincts – supremacist and domineering , imbued with medieval Mahavansa ethos.  The majoritarian leaders are resolved to gratify those instincts. In the process, Tamil people become disposables.

Proposed  Constitutional reforms have afforded the context for the Rajapaksa acolytes to freak out.. Synchronizing with the Assembly  debates, they have got into a fit of frenzy with racist ranting and fomenting ethnic tension.

Propaganda blitz:

Launching  blistering attack on Tamil  demand for a Federal State, Rajapaksas’ cohorts have embarked on a “propaganda blitz” via the media and public fora. The thematic contents are calculated to inflame the aggressive passion and chauvinist spirit of the nationalist Sinhala-Buddhist constituency.

The rhetoric dwells on ethnocentric matters as would excite the nationalist audience. Citing Nanthikadal episode, Rajapaksa advocates have been telling the Tamils, ad nauseum, that the Sinhalese are the “epic heroes” and the Tamils are a vanquished lot, not worthy of possessing any aspirations. Triumphalism and tribalism have been the substratum of majoritarian politics in post-war Sri Lanka.

Constriction of space does not allow me to quote extensively the unsavoury messages of the supremacists.  Nonetheless, some extracts may be illustrative: Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka plays the lead role in this discourse. The thrust of his messages and the threat they convey are irksome, if not dark and foreboding. Do they not betray a morbid  fascination with the horrors of the anti-Tamil holocaust of July 1983 (Black July)?.

“Non-peaceful  revolt in South”

“…… But if there is an unabated drive for Constitutional replacement (inevitably, unalterably, perceived as the retreat or retrenchment of the Sri Lankan State from the North) there could be a non-peaceful revolt in the South…..”

Having lost a bitterly fought, long war, by what logic do the Tamil nationalists believe that a new Constitution more reflective of their aspirations can be put in place?………..”      (Colombo Telegraph, 26 Oct.2017 , “What Political Contract & Which Political Order for Sri Lanka?” – Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka ).

Pugnacious  postures:

Dayan’s pugnacious postures resonate with the medieval instincts intrinsic to Mahavamsa culture. He seeks to rationalize the belligerency of the ultra-nationalists, which the likes of BBS  practice, propagate, glorify and justify. Dayan underscores “Threat to the nation”. This has been the alarmist refrain sung by Sinhala nationalists, the saffron-robed sages and their lynch mob,  to ignite  orgies of organized violence and periodical pogroms perpetrated on the Tamil people – in 1956, 1958, 1961, 1977, 1981 and 1983.

Threat to the nation

“…….Four factors prove causative in the rise of majoritarian ethnic/ethno-religious nationalism……The second is a perceived threat to the nation or ethnic community concerned and/or an assault on the religio-cultural moorings and ethos of the people.”

“………………A touch of Transnational Justice from Geneva or overt Indian intrusion into Constitution-making and this joint is set to blow as in the late 1980s.”

A unitary state, de jure and de facto, is a core strategic and security interest of the Sri Lanka majority, a redline for which they must and will fight “by any means necessary.” ( Colombo Telegraph, 9 Nov. 2017, ibid, “Crisis, Coalition, Constitution”)

Stranger than fiction:

Dayan’s fear-mongering tales about Tamil Nadu land- grab in North-East Sri Lanka etc. sound stranger than fiction – a figment of his fertile imagination. These incendiary stories are imperatives for “Restore Rajapaksa” campaign. However, one cannot call them funny, because the  Sinhala patriotic segments may swallow the phantom stories and bay for Tamil blood. Elaborating on the implications of giving Land powers to the Provincial Councils, Dayan says:

“………(I)t would mean that the land in the North and East would be acquired by  Tamil Nadu based and Tamil diaspora-driven front companies………etc. ( Colombo Telegraph, 9 Nov. 2017, ibid, “Crisis, Coalition, Constitution”)

Rajapakses pining for LTTE revival:

As a matter of fact, Rajapaksa camp has been pining for signs of LTTE revival -for some evidence of LTTE remnants. For, it will facilitate Rajapakses’ own revival. They want trouble and turmoil – violence and volatile conditions – in the North-East. Also, that will gratify the militaristic instincts of the armed forces, and by extension, instincts of the ultra-nationalists as well. That will provide the pretext for keeping the Tamil areas militarized forever and accelerate the “Sinhalisation” and “Buddhistisation” of  the Tamil habitats.

Vidya Rape & Murder

Dayan has been quite frank and forthright in seeking the restoration of Rajapaksas’ regime.  In his desire to do something substantial to advance the “Restore Rajapaksa” campaign, Dayan had been rooting around and rummaging through the Tamil terrain, looking for evidence of an “Intifada”-  an insurrection – signs of LTTE revival. And eventually, he found the evidence. It was rooted in a huge tragedy in Jaffna – the grim events surrounding the gruesome gang-rape and murder of 18-year-old schoolgirl Vidya Sivaloganathan at Pungudutivu-There was a police attempt  to cover up the crime.  Sensing police attempt to cover-up  and help the criminals to escape, the grief-stricken Jaffna community demonstrated outside the Jaffna magistrate’s court where some suspects were to be produced. Even as the protesters turned violent and pelted stones, the police used teargas and brought the situation under control. Some of the protesters were arrested. There were spontaneous protests and demonstrations by students in the East and (Sinhala) students in the South as well.

Cover up & Outrage

Evidently, the members of the community were outraged and they had every reason to vent their anger. They had emotionally reacted as any humans would do in the circumstances. Recent media reports show that the allegation of cover up was true and that a senior DIG involved in the cover-up has been lately arrested:

CID arrests senior DIG over Vidya rape and murder cover up” The Criminal Investigations Department yesterday arrested Senior Deputy Inspector General Lalith Jayasinghe on a charge of obstructing justice and helping suspects in a rape and murder case escape.” “Jayasinghe was the senior most police officer when 18-year-old Vidya  Sivaloganathan was gang raped and murdered at Punkuduthivu, off  Kayts island in the Jaffna peninsula in May 2015.” ( The Island,  15 July 2017).

Dubious  assumptions – “Intifada

Dayan had misconstrued facts to make out that an insurrection was taking shape in Jaffna. His assumptions  and assertions had been found baseless – and were made with mala fide intentions. “Do we not need Mahinda Rajapaksa as PM to restore strength, political will, purpose, direction and self-respect to the Sri Lankan State; to reinstall an erect spine as it were, and stop the dangerous drift in the North?” “Isn’t the return of Mahinda imperative to prevent Yahapalanaya from degenerating or drifting into Yaalpalanaya?” (Colombo Telegraph, 22 May 2015, “Northern Demonstrations: Creating A Kashmir?” ).

Now, what is the Kashmir analogy this gentleman is alluding to?. What is the dangerous drift in the North” that he fears and fulminates against? A schoolgirl had been savaged and brutally killed and there was an outpouring of  grief from an outraged community. But Dayan had perceived an incipient insurrection – an incendiary (Palestinian-type)  Intifada” or a Kashmiri  kamikaze in the making – LTTE footprints and Eelamists’ fingerprints! Dayan’s holy horror is articulated through a  volley of questions:

Volley of Questions :

Are the latest demonstrations the beginning or the testing out, of an Intifada strategy?”

Is it the beginning or the test run of a Kashmir scenario in which there is daily violence by stone throwing mobs against Police and armed forces personnel?

Was there any incitement by the pro-LTTE or more broadly, the pro-Tamil Eelam segment of the Tamil Diaspora, operating through the radical wing of the TNA?”

President Rapajapksa reopened democratic space in the North and East by defeating the Tigers……The security net was in place. Nothing of the kind of demonstrations we’ve just seen could happen during his tenure.”

Today the security net has been rolled back by the Government. It is in that context…….that violent and radical demonstrations can take place in the North.”

(CT, 22 May 2015, “Northern Demonstrations: Creating A Kashmir?”- Extracts ).

Does Dayan want Jaffna to remain forever a garrisoned ghetto under the repressive jackboots of the marauding military?.

Homagama  incidents –  an “Intifada”?

In January 2016, eight months after the ostensible “intifada” erupted and promptly ended in the Jaffna court premises, another “intifada” (just copying Dayan’s jargon) of more serious proportions erupted at Homagama court premises in the South. The unseemly scenario included, inter alia,  the following incidents:

*Large number of protesters including around 200 Buddhist monks gathered in the Court premises shouting slogans against the arrest of BBS Gnanasara Thera, who was arrested on charges of contempt of Court, obstructing Court proceedings and intimidation of public official.

*Pandemoniam prevailed in the premises.

* Some monks slept on the road blocking the movement of prisons bus which was to transport Ven. Gnanasara Thera to the prisons.

*Several monks jumped over the wall and entered the court premises.

*Three Buddhist monks threatened to self-immolate.

*Around 300 police officers and the riot police with water cannon vehicles arrived at the Court premises to control the situation.

( Daily News, 27 Jan. 2016 – “Mayhem as monks go on the rampage”).

Nary a word or whisper from Dayan on this incident.  So much for

Dayan’s objectivity and fairness!

A well analyzed excellent rebuttal to Dayan. Great job Mr. Navaratnam. You have nailed Dayan left, right and center and made him seek solace by quoting late Izzeth (another Ex Diplomut). You did not leave even Dayan’s Amude (loin cloth), you left him fully naked and exposed. Please keep writing, we’d love to have people of your caliber writing to CT.

Mr. Navaratnam’s hysterical nonsense just confirms what the late Izzeth Hussein, a distinguished ex-diplomat, literary critic and intellectual, and hardly a Sinhala racist, wrote about Tamil racism on this website:

“Tamil racism is worse, very much worse, than Sinhala racism”…

“…a solid segment of Tamils who are intensely racist, who could possibly be even among the worst racists in the world.”

Wow Mr Navaretnam’s marvellous countering of spurious DJ left him defenceless but resorting to quoting Izzeth Hussein! Late Izzeth Hussein was a known anti-Tamil man for obvious reasons!

Come on DJ counter Mr Navaratnam point by point if you can. Basically you are a downright racist with reckless motives.

Any protest by Tamils to safe guard their language is considered Racism. But what ever Sinhalese utter about their Language is Nationalism. A good example of Sinhala racism is When a request was made to name the 57th lane at Wllawatte ( about a 100 meters long) where The Tamil Sangam is situated for over 60 years, as “Tamil Sangam Lane,” there were heap of protests from the Buddhist Priests too. In view of these protests CMC gave permission to name the Lane as “SANGAM”Lane deleting the word TAMIL. What have you got to say about this?.

Dayan, it is not fair to attack Izeth when he is dead. It was very clear that he had a specific agenda and was a tireless promoter of Sinhala Tamil animosity. He made unwarranted and unsubstantiated attacks on Tamils so much so that he was reprimanded by fair minded Muslims not to do so. When asked to give reasons to state that Tamil racism was worse than Sinhala racism, he ducked the issue. Tamils never asked their language to be forced on Sinhalese, while Sinhalese are still continuing to force their language on Tamils despite Tamil being given official language status in 1987 under Indo-Lanka accord. Tamils are asking only for their fir share of power and land and never wanted to bring Sinhalese under their rule. So the statement made by Izeth that Tamils could possibly be even among the worse racists in the world makes him a lunatic fringe racist as what have Tamils done compared to what is happening in Burma or what ISIS is doing to non-Muslims.

A brilliant exposition of the mindset of the forces harking for the political climate that prevailed during the MARa Medamulana era that ended 8th January 2015.

The writer has had the knack to identify the reasonig of a perfidious mind such as Dayan J’s to cosider a justified public protest as an ‘intifada’ just to validate the presence of an army occupation of the North and interfere with the daily lives of it’s inhabitants by taking over their lands and to facilitate a majoritarian ethnic composition to dilute and change the existing population pattern to falsify historical facts.
The cover up and the involvement of a very senior police officer stationed in Jaffna now in custody is another story. The full facts behind those important Tamil political personalities and the Dean of the Law Faculty Colombo University who were involved in that tragic episode about the rape and murder of that young innocent school girl Vidya Sivaloganathan has yet to come to the open.
Her rape and cruel murder was something that was condenmed by all irrespective of race language or religion across the whole country.

But the mystery surrounding the subsequent attempt on the life of Judge Illanchelliyan who sat in judgment with two others in that case still endures.
So is the killing of the killing of his loyal Sinhalese bodyguard.
It appears that no attempt has yet been made so far to comply with the order of that judge to obtain the recorded contents of images of CCTV cameras in shop premises in the vicinity of the site of that important road junction where that incident happened, nor has there been any report as yet of any progress of the investigation or action taken.
But the accused in that rape and murder case have been found guilty and sentenced.
Coming back to the ‘Intifada’ that the writer alludes to.

Tamils are unfortunately a group of people that are easily fooled. The British fooled them during colonial times and set them up forever with the majority. The Sinhalese politicians have been fooling every Tamil MP in parliament since independence. The Indians used them like a condom and threw them to the dustbin after the dirty deed was done.

This Henry Caldera look-a-like should focus on what is plaguing his race rather than trying to wear a cloak of superiority that only exists in his own mind.

To see a Tamil’s lack of class, lack of honesty and disingenuity look no further than the writer called “Native Veddha” here. He’s your textbook example of the creature called “Tamil”. Masquerades as a Veddha, talks in filth all the time, retorts to name calling and presents facts twisted and turned to his advantage. The war may have ended but the Tamil crook is alive and well.

The whole world is aware of Sinhalayass as very foolish, lazy, violent, racist, hateful, jealous and mean spirited. This is the reason why, when it came to white collar jobs in the Ceylon Civil Service the colonials gave preference to Ceylon Tamils of North and East. The Tamils were holding top positions in the government service whereas the Sinhalyass were working as peons and drivers.

For the last two thousand odd years the Sinhalyass had been fighting with the Demalayas, and it is still not over. Elaras, Dutugemunus, Prabakarans and Rajapakshes will come and go but the Sinhalayass and the Demalayas will stay forever and keep fighting until the country is doomed.

Not quite sure as to what Karikalan means by instinct. If this means ‘inner feelings’ then this is easily sown and cultivated to pogrom level. In the early fifties the manthra was “India invasion with Tamil help”. This created the 1958 pogrom. This enemy phantom was reduced to Tamils only in all subsequent pogroms – the latest is the Alutgama Pogrom of 2014 based on ‘enemy minorities’.
Dayan is exploiting this human weakness. Killing a fellow human is NOT a human instinct.

The state monopolised the violence in severe forms against the Tamils since 1983 and the politicians, police, state functionaries and armed forces profited from such monopoly. I can understand your anxiety/disappointment for being left out or lost opportunities of riots, thrill from burning houses and business premises, …… murder, rape, looting, ……………….. sense of belonging to the rioters, comradeship with the Sinhala/Buddhist Fascists, …………………………….

Instead the state took care of the destruction, rape at industrial scale, looting, harassment, creative art form of torture, ……………………… and confined terrible activities to north and east. And the war was a brilliant money making venture for the people who were connected to the polity, their b***s carriers, functionaries, armed forces, …………..

You should have aligned one of the group.

In essence the organised violence was monopolised by the state and confined to North East. The intermittent violence stopped because the state took over and committed systematic violence on a scale that would not have been possible by you and your mates, saffron clad thugs , politicians, members of trade unions, …..

This Navaratnam is a bloody joke! He quotes an irrelevant sentence from Lipson to illustrate an even more irrelevant response to Dayan. Was it to give it a pseudo intellectual touch to a naive response to Dayan?. Like most Tamil commentators whose political views are always coloured by communal glasses, this man resorts to name calling when he fails to refute an argument. I find this phenomenon in most comments made by Tamils who seem to be seething over the well deserved elimination of Prabakaran. If they can’t come to terms with that it is better in their own interests to seek to live in harmony with other communities..One need not be a soothsayer to predict that should there be another terrorist movement from the Tamils no man, woman or child from the North will be safe.

“This Navaratnam is a bloody joke.”

Once Amartya Sen wrote an interesting article in different forum. There were a few comments from the usual active noisy Sinhala/Buddhist minority. Almost all those commented asked “who is this joker”.

Why do the usual active noisy Sinhala/Buddhist minority use the words joke, joker, traitor, …… or an employee of NGO or INGO to denigrate anyone who write sensible articles or disagree with them?

By the way Amartya Sen is an economist and a Philosopher, a Nobel Laureate.

It is a disgusting fact that even after 70 years of independence, this country is still left with this type of communal abuse in a public forum for the world to laugh at. All these contributors from all corners of the world should forget the differences and work towards the prosperity of this poor nation marred by poor leadership, corrupt practices and politics without the genuine vision for the future.

Params, dear chap. You are missing the point. “This poor nation” you lament was destroyed by super-Sinhala “patriots” – starting from the
Apey Anduwa revolution of 1956. When the yellow-robed priest-led mobs screamed “apey” (ours) they meant Sinhala Buddhists only. See what they have done???
They have destroyed the roots of a once resourceful country to the bone. It is now one of the most debt-ridden countries in the world – something like Zimbabwe. Now there is nothing in the cadaver for the Sinhalese, Tamils or others. Don’t you see the Sinhala educated escaping to Australia, NZ, Singapore, Canada and the Arabic States? Within the next 10-15 years at least 2 million more Sinhalese (GCE/AL and above) will “escape” the fastly collapsing economy.
That is the reward of Sinhalisation that was aimed at devaluing the
value and ability of other talented communities.

Native vedda you need not go to such lengths as invoking Amartya Sen to support the rabid bleatings from arch communalist Navaratnam. Sen and Navaratnam are as distinct from each other as chalk and cheese or in lingo that makes better sense to thosai munchers, French bread and stinking vaddais. Unfortunately quite in contrast to a well known saying this joker talks bullshit.another question for native Vedda why are Tamils so ugly, smelly, and so unattractive that no one wants to know them.?

    • 1
      0

      Percy,

You also sound like one of those remote village Kavum gobbling Moda-Sinhala Appuhamys. If you go to any Thosay kade in Colombo, most of their customers are Sinhalese happily gobbling the so called ‘stinking Vaddais’. If you go down South to any Sinhala rural areas, you find Appuhamys of your type chewing bulath (betal) and spitting all over the country side (red bulath stains all over the places). Didn’t you know that your great grandfathers (Appuhamys) with the Moda headgear (Konde with a comb) even gave their women on hire to the Parangi Suddas (Portuguese) in return for just a bottle of wine? I feel sorry for your women folk. Even today you are hiring your women to the Arabs for a few Riyals. Can you run your hand on the back of your head to see if the bendapu konda (kudumbi) is well intact and also run your hand down under to see if your amude (loin cloth) is well intact? Can I get you some bulath (betal) to chew or a bucket full of Kavum to gobble?

BTW, you don’t seem to be knowing anything about the Sri Lankan people. The physical appearance of the majority of Sinhalese and Sri Lankan Tamils are identical and their complexion is very similar (most of them are dark skinned while there are also fair skinned on both sides). This is why, if they wear the same clothes/dress, it is very difficult to differentiate between the two (only the cultural clothes and language can differentiate them). If the Sinhalese and Tamils looked different, during the war, our security forces and the public would have easily identified the suicide bombers in advance and taken prior action. The DNA tests also shows that both Sinhalese and Sri Lankan Tamils are almost the same genetically. If you find any fair skinned attractive Sinhalese, the one and only reason is down the family line there is definitely a Portuguese/Parangi Sudda.

      Percy the smart ass patriot

You didn’t get the point did you. With your raging bigoted mind, you will never get the point.

I have no intention of supporting Navaratnam or for that matter others. You need to visit your local optician urgently else you are going to bumped into an on coming heavy vehicle. I do not want to see lesser number of stupid racists in this forum.

I was merely pointing out your stupidity, cultural trait ………….. inability to articulate what is truth or justice, …………… You have a limited vocabulary, can’t see, won’t see beyond your nose, …………………… When you are enraged or otherwise you are free to call us joke or joker.

“why are Tamils so ugly, smelly, and unattractive that no one wants to know them?”
      Perhaps they share your genetics.

Navaratnam, your provocative and insulting rhetoric simply invites another Black July. If you are craving for a double dose you will get one.,!

Go for it Percy! Another Black July will certainly pave the way clear for Eelam! You were one of those who wanted to teach the Tamils a lesson resulting in 30 years of war. Have a go again, this time you will not get what you wish for!

Why do you frequently change your pseudonym?
Is it because whatever you type become stale quickly, like vadda, buriyani kiri bath?

Dayan is the flag bearer of Sinhala – Buddhist racism and majoritarianism. Like a man suffering from diahorrea he is churning out non-sensical articles to whip up Sinhala – Buddhist sentiments. His father Mervyn de Silva who was known for his liberalism must be turning in his grave seeing his son’s anti-Tamil racist campaign. Dayan like the fence calling the lizard for his defence is citing late Izzeth Hussein a well known anti-Tamil baiter in his defence. It is obvious he is re-acting to the onslaught by Karikalan’s response to the numerous articles he dishes out. It was cowardice on the part of Dayan to dismiss off hand the incisive and well articulated article by Karikalan simply as Tamil racism. There was no racism whatsoever in Karikalan’ s article.
I want to pose an important and relevant question: Who is Dayan to say that federalism is dangerous and it will lead to eventual separation? What is his status? He is not even a member of the Pradesha Sabha. He is a lone wolf, not even admired by his fellow Sinhala -Buddhist extremists,

But when there is bias and discrimination the people have a right to exercise self-determination.

The SC went on to state” The labelling of states as unitary and federal sometimes may be misleading. There could be unitary states with features or attributes of a federal state and vice versa. In a unitary state if more powers are given to the units it could be considered as a federal state. Similarly in a federal state if the centre is powerful and the power is concentrated in the centre it could be considered as a unitary state. Therefore sharing of sovereignty, devolution of power and decentralization will pave the way for a federal form of government within a unitary state. The Thirteen Amendment to the Constitution devolved powers on the provinces. The ITAK is advocating for a federalist form of government by devolving more powers to the provinces within the framework of a unitary state. Advocating for a federal form of government within the existing state could not be considered as advocating separatism.
So it is clear as day light that Tamils can advocate a federal form of government within the existing state and same is not considered as advocating separation. Yes the Tamils suffered defeat in the war, but that does not mean the Tamils have been vanquished for ever. Dayan must grow up and I challenge him to prove the SC judgment is of no force and invalid in law. Before January 8th revolution the Supreme Court was under siege by the all powerful executive President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s authoritarian rule. Today, the situation is different.
