Bopage Gets An Earful From Ranil

Mass Media Ministry Secretary Nimal Bopage has received an earful from Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, after he criticized journalists and media organisations for giving publicity to the Joint Opposition, and said that giving publicity to the group was ‘illegal’ and they should not misuse the media freedom given under the Yahapalanaya government.Nimal Bopage

Wickremesinghe had blasted Bopage at a meeting, asking him to not take decisions according to his whims and fancies, and ordered him to in future follow protocol and obtain approval for all statements from subject minister Gayantha Karunathilaka before releasing it to the media.

Soon after Bopage’s statement, Minister Karunathilaka was quick to react to it claiming that it was the ministry secretary’s ‘personal stand and not the view of the government,’ even though the statement was issued on the letterhead of the Ministry of Parliamentary Reform and Mass Media.

He should be fired for embarrassing the government. Good for PM and Minister for taking action to correct and warn the culprit.

But this the kind of secretary should be given a second chance.

I listened to him very attentively and felt he is no second to powerful secretaries in european countries. He resonses realsed tothe maedia questions were not just evasive ones, even if he should have contacted Media Minister before being relased any kind of crucial statements.

PM has reacted so switfly, In the days MR rule, he did not even take the kind of issues as a fart. This makes it a very distinction. PM well done, hat off to you Sir.

PM Ranil is getting tough and so is the President. This is a good sign
for a no nonsense Govt.as officials in higher places in the govtsector
should know what their limits are. There were instances where DIGs over
ruled the IGP and parliamentary secys.over ruled the ministers in the passed regime and this should stop in the future. The current IGP made a useful statement on assumption of his duties as IGP that people should mind their own business and the Police will do their duties, as guardians of law & order in the country, meaning that no interference by outside sources, other than the Minister,PM and President, will not be tolerated. People will be happy with such kind of administration.

Bopage was acting according to instructions given by the president who appointed him. Ranil has shown that he calls the shots and the president will have to allow him to do so. SLFP ministers; beware of Ranil.

Some Sri Lankan bureaucrats, where I belonged once, think that they are above all and powerful. But they never think that they are paid by the tax collected from the ordinary people to whom they have to serve. No different to politician. Both always get together.

Interesting the Minister complains to the PM like a small child about his own secretary ignoring him. Instead of allowing the Minister to grow up and take charge all PM has done is like a school master call the secretary and berate him and tell him to seek the approval of the Minister next time. Aney paw we have a very happy minister now. Mmmmaaaa.
