The Jathika Hela Urumaya has decided to break away from the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

The decision was made when the party’s main decision making body met last night in Colombo.
The JHU will contest the forthcoming Parliamentary election under the United National Front for Good Governance.
The party has decided to break away from the UPFA as it decided to give nomination to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest under the UPFA ticket. JHU General Secretary Patali Champika Ranawaka said the party could not contest under a political front accommodating former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Ranawaka said the party was holding discussions with several other political movements to contest together at the General election under the new ‘Good Governance’ front.

15 million votes in a country of 21 million does not make numerical sense. Many Sri Lankan I know also have not registered due to DISGUST with the political system. Good riddance for UPFA.
Champika is undoubtedly anti-Tamil. He may be harbouring his own ambitions to become the next President. But no chance of that happening.
Let him contest on his own and prove that he has popular support.
Champika and JHU hitch-hiked on the UPFA bandwagon to enter Parliament. The name United National Front for Good Governance is just to fool the people and this Champika’s party will be essentially a Sinhala extremist party. So long as guys like Champika and Wimal Weerawangsa are around they will make reconciliation with the Tamils difficult with their anti-Tamil venom.

Whatever the reasons that MS has up his sleeve, on the face of it, I disagree with his decision to sponsor MR. He should not be recalled at all. Just like Leapords do not change spots in their life time, Mahinda would never ever change his personality and objectives in his life time. We would be back to the time of his form of fedualism and dictatorship, and worst of all the nepotism, corruption and downright roguish activities. He has ruined his good reputation as a savior of the nation at one point in our history, and the next moment he has usurped all its assets for the benefit of his family.
What MS, in his goodness, does not seem to understand is that once MR is in, he would be given the premiership by his cronies in the parliamnet together with enormous powers. MS would have no control over the mobs and hecklers as they have adequately shown us since january, and let those hecklers and indecent polticcos win. As things appear to be going, MS would quite literally end up under the soil, as he predicted in January. Presidency is no guarantee to life: Abraham Lincoln, John Kennedy and such like powerful people ended up in a hail of bullets.
As to the politics of principles, difficult that it may be, I agree with Champika. People must have principles and stick to promises. MR out MUST mean MR out, not sending on his gardening leave, to be recalled to his old job under a new name. I too feel that MS has let down 6.2M people and embraced a viper that he cannot control.
It makes me wonder now, if MR has kept a file on MS as well as on RW. It explains why these stalwarts of Yahapalanaya were impotent to do anything against MR, when they had the opportunity and reasons to lock him up. There are times politicans have to act decisively and take risks, and then take responsibility for it. MS did it once, but now he does not seem to have the strength and drive to maintain his original objectives. MR might spare him, provided MS returns to a temple to spend his remaining life.
