CM Nazeer Ahamed Saga: Need To End This Political Arrogance !

By Lukman Harees

Politics is a pendulum which swings between anarchy and tyranny are fuelled by perpetually rejuvenated illusions“– Albert Einstein

During the previous regime, we had the likes of political thugs such as Mervyn Silva who punished a state official by tying him to a tree; politicians who talked filth in public media such as SB and Johnston Fernando and we had a Local body chairman in Hambantota who sought to attack opposition politicos with a pistol in hand and another one punishing a teacher in school. It was a common sight during those days for civil servants and law enforcement officers to be treated by the politicos like slaves and bring subjected to ridicule and utmost humiliation by those so called servants of the people, most of them did not even possess basic educational qualifications. The Political Rowdyism and hooliganism have been the order of the day then.

It was therefore not surprising that the people voted that regime out and voted another set in, who strategically cashed in on the emotional feelings of our people and assumed a pseudo reformist image claiming to bring in good governance. But sadly, this same rowdyism continues if not to the same degree and political rowdies have become a public nuisance and even an embarrassment. No end appears in sight for political haughtiness and arrogance.

Chief Minister of Eastern PC Nazir Ahamed

Chief Minister of Eastern PC Nazeer Ahamed

The process of political degeneration, in many aspects has been worsening in public life during the last few decades. It has been an utter shame that this Yahapalanaya clique too has been continuing to encourage and use Political Rowdyism and allow the offenders to go scot-free. Many political characters of dubious credibility in the earlier regime, although were apparently charged by the courts for various offences, and sent to ‘prison’ were kept in comfort in the hospital and released on medical grounds. Parliamentary proceedings have become a comedy where everything but the vital affairs of the country are discussed and decided upon. The members continue to utter filth and profanities, disobey the orders of the Chair inside the parliament while outside they flex their muscles, and misbehave in public and act in an arrogant manner not befitting their status.

It was in this context that the country learnt about the disgusting news of this haughty Chief Minister of Eastern PC Nazeer Ahamed verbally abusing a Navy officer in public, after accusing him of failing to understand protocol. This ugly incident occurred at an event held last week during the opening ceremony of a science lab and computer unit at the Sampur Maha Vidyalayam, in the presence of the Governor Austin Fernando and the US Ambassador as well. A child too was seen accidentally being hit by the hand of the Chief Minister. The reason given by him was that he was angry over the failure by the organisers of the event to initially invite him on stage to present gifts to the children.

Video footage showed how this so called high-ranking politician from the SLMC behaved in the most despicable, arrogant manner acting like a bully in the stage, by using uncivilized vocabulary in the presence of foreign guests thus giving this incident an international publicity as well. It also provided a bad example for the scores of school children in the audience. These political rowdies should not be allowed to further pollute the already polluted political atmosphere by acting like bullies in public using their political powers given to them through public mandate. In this instance, he insulted and abused a senior naval officer and a senior civil servant, which he has no right to do at all, whatever the reasons, thereby bringing the office of the Chief Minster itself into disrepute. Will this Chief Minister have the strength of character to apologize publicly for his disgraceful action? People wonder what action SLMC will take against their CM Ahamed for his disgusting behaviour or will they just maintain that this type of behaviour is not new and many others have indulged in such conduct as well ? Will the President as the Head of State and the Commander in Chief take action against this rowdyism without attempting to sweep this incident under the carpet for reasons of political expediency? If the government do not clearly declare their stand on this unhealthy trend, then extremists will once again give this Hafeez Ahamed saga a racist slant as they always do to fish in troubled waters.

The people of Sri Lanka no longer can or should tolerate these types of abuses and display of political arrogance and rowdyism any longer and should insist that their government put an immediate stop to these types of abuses and safeguard the dignity of the state officers, civil servants and law enforcement authorities, which was blatantly violated, particularly during the previous regime. Politicians should be told that they should be operating within the laws of the land, which are not instruments to oppress the people and state officers. Political leaders whether at parliamentary, provincial council or local government level should set an example and safeguard the dignity of the civil servants and law enforcement officers and not undermine.

The government should develop a mechanism soon to put an end to this menace through education, to convince them to follow rules of conduct voluntarily ,failing which legal process should follow without fear or favour. Any further delays in doing so, will spell disaster for our political system already in the state of collapse with levels of credibility at the lowest ebb ever.

    Agreed, 100%.

But, the reaction to what he did should not be out of proportion. It must be a professional response to his unprofessional conduct.

CM should have taken it to the appropriate forum if anything exists like that.
navy officers may not know the civilian protocol and under good governance they have nothing to do in the schools. it appears that good governance is only for south not for defeated people and areas.

We have a Governor in the Eastern Province, who cannot be accused of communal bias, but has to play referee in a match being played by three teams, fighting for dominance and a Chief Minister with a huge ego, bloated sense of self importance and accused of favouring one team.

We have a Governor in the Northern Province, who also cannot be accused of communal bias, but has no need to be a referee, and a Chief Minister, who has also huge ego and does not know what he has to do and how.

What is the solution both in the short and long term?

      Dr Narendran
What has the CM of NPC got to do with this issue.
All of us you have a grudge against the CM of NPC and you try to talk ill of him even if the issues have no connection with him. We all know how hard you tired to get into the favour of mahinda rajapakse when he was in power but failed miserably. Now you try to to bed with the present government haven’t got anywhere.
You are a miserable so and so why don’t you take a rest or go and treat the animals as you a vet.

        proud man,

There is a parallel- both are trying to undermine this governments efforts to make the 13th amendment to work to the extent possible , envisaged changes to the constitution.

        The New Indian Express a Reports the Followings;

1.CVW is planning to breakaway from the TNA and form a new radical party, with the support of radical elements in the Diaspora. The TNA may allow this to happen.

        2. CVW is following a oath of deliberate confrontation with the Governor andthe government.

        3. CVW is giving primacy to political demands than the more pressing administrative and development issues.

        4. NPC has returned 75% of the development funds allocated by the government.

        5. Sathialingam has been stripped of his important portfolios, bcause the CVW thinks that theTNA will put him up as his successor.

        6. It us suspected that CVW will give these portfolios to Ananthi Sasitharan. The blur eyed lady of the radical Diaspora.

I have nothing against CVW as a person, but dislike te manner in which he is functioning as the first CM of the NPC.

Dr. Narendran, Do you know the latest arrogant act in the brewing? Nazir Ahamad wants an impeachment the Governor because he is sticking to rules and regulations, not favoring Muslims over Tamils when Muslims do not deserve, not releasing funds due to FRs not permitting, state land grabbing in Batticaloa District? I am made aware that a speech made by the Governor pointing these administartive weakness have pissed off the Chief Minister. Now he is trying to say things against the Governor to deviate from the criticsm leveled against him on demeaning a War Hero. Although the Governor was totally responsible for the resettlement of the displaced in Sampur in which he played the lead role and his personal interest to rehabilitate Kovils, government institutions, getting about a million dollars for Sampur, TNA is silent and putting the bait to Muslim Congress to get the support to merge North and East in lieu of supporting Nasir Ahamed for the impeachment of the Governor. What starnge bed fellows? Similarly Ven Gnasara, MPs Weerawansa, Gammanpila etc do not look at these issues and only focus on attacking Chief Minister on political grounds. What a mess?

        Sinhalaya,

I have been travelling to Batticaloa, at regular intervals in the past six months. I am aware to some extent what is transpiring there. There is much jostling for power and land between the three ethnic groups there. What the East definitely needs is a CM who can think and act beyond his own ethnic idenitity.

The present CM does not fit that definition. The previous one was a unqualified and unmitigated misfit. The first one was an Indian puppet who played a major role in undermining the N-E provincial council with his shortsighted approach and actions. The N-E merger would not have anyway worked in the long term, considering the ethnic demographics in the east- a reality that cannot be ignored or denied and the contest for dominance by each ethnic group. What the east needs is a reconfiguration of borders as was done in Andra Pradesh in India recently, if this debilitating malady is to be treated.

Until such time, Governor Austin Fernando is the right person, at the right place and at the right time, to play the role of referee. He has the education, experience and a broad outlook to do so.

CM Nazeer Ahamed Saga: Need To End This Political Arrogance!

Yes government should take action at the highest level. In the mean time the others who are on charges in this government and previous government should also be taken up without wasting the time and dragging to months and years.

If this is implemented, public will see a sigh of relief in the so called Yahapalanaya and not as Wanapalanaya as it is doing now.

The behaviour of the Eastern Province Chief Minister at the Sampoor School function was arrogant and NOT called for. Moreover, as an important political representative of the district, the Chief Minister’s actions have to be condoned severely. The worst part is, the manner in which the Chief Minister addressed the Navy Officer who was supposed to have been the compere, calls for severe disciplinary action at the highest level. If President Maithripala Sirisena will fall back on this, just for the purpose to make sure that the Chief Minister has a large Muslim vote bank (which he does NOT have in Trincomalee district) in the East/Trincomalee district, then we Muslims will NOT vote for the President any more, because, the behaviour of the Chief Minister towards the Navy Captain is a DISGRACE to the Sri Lanka Muslim Community in at large and especially that of the Eastern Province. The Navy should also set-in-motion “civil action/legal proceedings” against the Chief Minister for disgracing and abusing a government official and that too an armed forces officer in public and claim at least Rs. 10 million in damages for his pain of mind. To us, the Naval Officer (Captain) is a “HERO”. Taking this opportunity, on behalf of the Sri Lankan Muslim Community, THE MUSLIM VOICE wish to tender our sincere APOLOGIES to the Navy Officer (Captain) and the Sri Lanka Navy and are very proud of the officer’s discipline in maintaining PATIENCE and CALM throughout the episode, in front of foreign dignitaries and a large local gathering whom the Navy Officer has been making his “YEOMAN” service in Sampoor. Did NOT this IDIOT of a Chief Minister know, that if NOT for the great sacrifices made by the Navy and the triforces, where the hell would he have been today, just an ordinary businessman living in Borella, Colombo.

Noor Nizam seems to be a nut. I wonder who gave him authority to apologize on behalf of the Muslim community?

BY doing so, he does not realize that the whole community is assuming guilt which is not necessary. THis is exactly what the West is also expecting Muslims to do -to apologize every time a nut with a Muslim name commits a terrorist act. Muslims are not responsible for the disgraceful act of this SLMC politician. It is a political act and not a religious one.

Don’t put your foot in the mouth and get chocked!

Well said Lukman and Noor. The Muslim community will fully endorse the sentiments expressed by Lukman and Noor both of whom I personally know, and join in resenting and disassociating with the CM of EP on this incident.

The Government of good governance should do everything in its power to bring in good governance and fulfill the aspirations and trust placed on them by bringing them into power. Without fear or favour the government should stand out and punish the errant, however high, powerful or influential and past or present they may be to eradicate the menace of lawlessness, thuggery etc and bring in a disciplined society where the Government of good governance and every citizen can be proud of.

Let not the initiatives that are now in progress be dented by corrupt and manipulative people and organisations to achieve their selfish aim

Muslims in Sri Lanka do NOT have a voice – a POLITICAL VOICE for that purpose. The SLMC is dead. The ACMC is busy making money, the Muslim politicians stooging the UNP are ONLY interested in their personal benefits. The ungrateful Muslim politicians who benefited the most from Mahinda Rajapaksa, Basil Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa are now stooging the Yahapalana government and enjoying their best with their kith and kin and henchaiyas, by selling the VOTE BANK of the Muslims who have been deceived lock-stock-and-barrel. The Muslim Civil Society and Muslim Media organizations in Sri Lanka land their leaders will stage dramas by releasing “press statements” because all of them have been well taken care by the Yahapalana government and the foreign interests who are giving them large amounts of funding to keep their mouth shut. Like what happened in Aluthgama and Beruwela, Maharagama and Dambulla, they all will COVER up the TRUTH and the Muslims will be told a “LONG STORY.It is time up that a NEW POLITICAL FORCE that will be honest and sincere that will produce “CLEAN” and diligent Muslim Politicians to stand up and defend the Muslim Community politically and otherwise, especially from among the YOUTH, has to emerge from within the Sri Lanka Muslim Community to face any new election in the comming future, Insha Allah.

CM Nazeer Ahamed’s behaviour is truly appalling but unfortunately there’s little the government or even the SLMC could do in this instance to reprimand an elected official. We should have the system deployed in the USA where the public could recall the elected officer if found unworthy, to stand for re-election or retire.

Dear HE President and Hon.PM, we elected you to clean up the dirty and stinking system which brought about untold harm to the entire nation and the people.

I too a Muslim, in this situation religion or any other considerations not involved.

It’s the question of the country’s honor and character.

It’s both of you should take stern action to put a full stop to this kind of actions of elected official and others, and set good examples to the rest of the nation.

The people are 1000% with you, please you don’t shame, take the maximum action, and show others this sort of behavior of shouldn’t be tolerated any more.

Bodhi Sira Faction is considering Dr Mervy as a Organizer for Hamabantota to help Yahapalanaya.

SB Dissanayaka I thought is a big ass supporter of Batanada Ranil.

Now Batalanada’s Army body guard, the retired Field Marshall comes out openly to back Wahabi Nazeer against the Rana Wiru Navy Officer who was physically threatened , humiliated and told to get off the stage, which the Navy built to hand over the Navy built Lab to the School.

Yahapalana Motor Vehicles and UNP slush Fund are more powerful than you and the other good people who try hard to do something good for the country.

Sorry to say it , but please keep trying..

If the Army Officer has violated procedures in dealing with the Chief Minister, he is an offender and should be dealt, with. On the other hand, if the Chief Minister being a Muslim and coming from a Muslim party has failed to behave according to his religious guidance in behaving in such situations, he too should be dealth with by his party for bringing the community and party to disrepute. The issue should be treated as one between two individuals holding responsible govt. positions and not made a racial or communal issue.

    Dr.Rajasingham Narendran,

You said “…. What the East definitely needs is a CM who can think and act beyond his own ethnic idenitity.”.

What a great discovery!!! Can you name a single politician or CM in Sri Lanka who can think and or act beyond his own ethnic identity today?

The unfortunately the CM of Eastern Province is a Muslim. If somebody from other communities had behaved like Naseer Ahmed, the problem would not have earned so much of popularity, I believe.

    Lukman,

You said “During the previous regime, we had the likes of political thugs such as Mervyn Silva who punished a state official by tying him to a tree; politicians who talked filth in public media such as SB and Johnston Fernando and we had a Local body chairman in Hambantota who sought to attack opposition politicos with a pistol in hand and another one punishing a teacher in school. The Political Rowdyism and hooliganism have been the order of the day then”.

Any of those incidents you have mentioned above did not earn such publicity like what the said incident relating to Naseer Ahmed has earned.

When I read the comments of a number of readers in this page, I strongly feel that many of them are politically and or communally biased.

Until and unless we have people in Sri Lanka who can think/act neutrally beyond political and communal bias, there is no a good future for Sri Lanka. It is utter shame that you put your own interest before the country!!
