Conspiracies To Bring Back ‘The Family’ Into Power: Arjuna Warns

The Ports and Shipping Minister, Arjuna Ranatunga has urged the President and the Prime Minister to ensure that the nominations are not granted to opportunistic and corrupt persons for the upcoming elections.

“Honorable President, Honorable Prime Minister, remarkably for the first time in the Sri Lankan political history, today both of you are able to move all parties and people in the North and the South towards one destined objective. Even though both of you belong to two different political parties and ideologies, today you are able to make decisions collectively; important issues have been resolved as a result of this key alliance, understanding and leadership.” the Ports and Shipping Minister, Arjuna Ranatunga said in a letter.

Minister Ranatunga

Minister Ranatunga

Writing to the President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Minister Ranatunga said; “On the 8th of January we established a milestone of a beginning of an ideal era in the history of Sri Lankan politics. There is yet on the one hand the great task of rebuilding the country, which was misdirected by family rule and family business. On the other hand, there is also the great challenge of the political parties and movements working together. We must also not forget that there are political conspiracies and maneuvers, as expected, to paralyze our march forward and to bring back ‘the family’ into the power.”

“The distress I have right now is that the partners and masterminds of that ongoing conspiracy are not outside but amongst us. The henchmen who became the backscratchers of the defeated regime, casino owners who looted and misused public money openly, heroine and ethanol dealers, black market dealers and dealmakers are now changing their moves. Now disguised in new outfits, their attempt is to get close to you and to continue their same manipulative behavior. I kindly ask you not to be deceived by them. The real call of the hour is to view the situation with a discerning eye, leading us to make right choices.” he said.

“In my view the upcoming election is critical in many ways. I believe more than all the other factors, the upcoming election is crucial for the future of our country. The entire future of the 8th January victory can be determined by the results of the upcoming election. Therefore, I kindly request you not to permit nominations for casino/ betting centre owners, gambling agents, heroine- ethanol and black market dealers and other fraudulent persons for the upcoming election. Furthermore, on the foundation of the same argument, I kindly request you not to grant nominations for opportunistic and corrupt persons who cross over from major parties when they are not able to secure nominations; in their own parties.” Ranatunga further said.

We publish below the letter in full;

Honorable President Maithripala Sirisena, Honorable Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe,

This letter comes forth as a request from a citizen who believes in a political philosophy and a resulting culture, which disfavor party politics, but rather upholds the progress of the country above all else.

My honest feeling is that the victory we achieved on 8th January, under your leadership, is a remarkable collective political victory of all Sri Lankans. As a sportsman and a member of the cricket world cup winning team in the year 1996, I am proud to have become a stakeholder of that political victory as well.

I served as a frontline combatant against the authoritarian rule and family based politics of the Rajapaksa’s, ignoring personal benefits and even ignoring the life threats I received; I put my country’s welfare before my own. The great joy and enthusiasm I experienced at the victory secured on 8th January is far more than what I experienced on the day Sri Lanka gained victory at the 1996 cricket world cup.

Honorable President and Honorable Prime Minister, the memories of the defeated regime are of resentment and of a apprehension. One family, through their narcissistic and immoral rule, has enjoyed our national resources without limit or control. Their will was to consume all the existing resources up to the limits of the sky, the earth and the ocean of the motherland. The will of the family suppressed the will of all Sri Lankans. The country was paralyzed by many forms of fear and violence, even though the war on terror had ended.

Personally, as a member of the parliament, I experienced tremendous amount of pressure and frustration during that time of political rule. On reflecting on the situation of the general public during that period, it is evident that the stress and violence the past regime unleashed upon the general public was severe and consequently had reached a tipping point both for the oppressor and the oppressed by the time of the elections.

On the 1st of December at Viharamahadevi Park, we signed a collective agreement which pledged an end to this dark age, prompting a positive future not only for us but also for the generations to come with the support and participation of various political parties and civil society collectives, disregarding all internal contradictions. Coincidently, the 1st of December is my birthday. It was remarkable that I had the opportunity to lay the foundation for the Maithri era that gathered different political parties and movements on one platform for one cause and for one challenge on a day that is very close to my heart.

Honorable President, Honorable Prime Minister, on the 8th of January we established a milestone of a beginning of an ideal era in the history of Sri Lankan politics. There is yet on the one hand the great task of rebuilding the country, which was misdirected by family rule and family business. On the other hand, there is also the great challenge of the political parties and movements working together. We must also not forget that there are political conspiracies and maneuvers, as expected, to paralyze our march forward and to bring back ‘the family’ into the power.

The distress I have right now is that the partners and masterminds of that ongoing conspiracy are not outside but amongst us. The real call of the hour is to view the situation with a discerning eye, leading us to make right choices.

Honorable President, Honorable Prime Minister, in my view the upcoming election is critical in many ways.

Furthermore, on the foundation of the same argument, I kindly request you not to grant nominations for opportunistic and corrupt persons who cross over from major parties when they are not able to secure nominations; in their own parties.

I honestly believe Honorable President, that you as the Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, and Honorable Prime Minister, you as the leader of the United National Party, are capable of standing this request favorably.

Honorable President, Honorable Prime Minister, remarkably for the first time in the Sri Lankan political history, today both of you are able to move all parties and people in the North and the South towards one destined objective. Even though both of you belong to two different political parties and ideologies, today you are able to make decisions collectively; important issues have been resolved as a result of this key alliance, understanding and leadership.

Accordingly, I kindly request you to make decisions and to take action on the matter I have emphasized. For the betterment of the country, both of you have been given the honorable duty of restricting opportunists and corrupt individuals from entering into the country’s political sphere. I believe it is meaningful to introduce criteria and guidelines for the process of permitting nominations, which cover all political parties.

Today, we must not ask people to select “good” people as politicians, but provide the opportunity for people to select the “best” people from good candidates. That duty is mainly entrusted personally, to the good reasoning powers of the two of you and dependent upon the power vested in your supreme designations. I believe that in the upcoming parliamentary election this would be one of the best ways to defeat the opportunists and corrupt persons.

Finally, I kindly request you not to let the victory and opportunity we achieved on 8th January be diminished and wasted. I strongly believe that this step will sustain and add true meaning to the victory of the common people and pave way to a civilized constructive political culture that would ensure a great future to our motherland.

May the Triple Gem bless you!

Yours sincerely, Arjuna Ranatunga

Conspiracies have been hatched to harm the President and those in the New Govt… ALL must be careful… For basil to come back, there has to be a reason… MR said at a press conference that he had Told Basil NOT to come to SL, that is aiding and abetting a criminal.. which is punishable by law…moreover.. he and Gota has already hatched a few plans to use BBS, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, and Ravana Balaya to start a communal riot and then push their agendas…

CID to investigate the gun holder

A special investigation was launched by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into an incident where a man said to be a security officer of MP Namal Rajapaksa was caught bearing a gun in the vicinity of President Maithripala Sirisena at the SLFP Hambantota district meeting held in Angunukolapelassa on Saturday (25).

Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said today that the man has been identified as a Corporal in the Sri Lankan Army and when questioned he has said that he was serving as a security officer to MP Namal Rajapaksa as well.

“However, President’s Security Division (PSD) personnel had missed the man in the security check and later was identified by them that he had not undergone the security check. When they checked him, the officers had found a gun in his possession and he was removed from the premises immediately,” the ASP said.

He also said that they have not verified as yet the connection between the gun holder and MP Namal Rajapaksa and the CID is yet to investigate the incident further.

PSD is headed by S. M. Wickramasinghe who was also in the same post when Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was in power. – See more at: http://www.dailymirror.lk/70347/cid-to-investigate-the-gun-holder#sthash.fj9fEJFC.dpuf

I am unaware about such an incident – Namal

MP Namal Rajapaksa said that he was unaware about an incident where a man said to be a security officer of his was caught bearing a gun in the vicinity of President Maithripala Sirisena in Angunukolapelassa on Saturday (25).

“I have seen some reports in social media about such an incident, but what I have to say is, I am unaware about such a thing at all and no one informed me about it as yet,” Mr Rajapaksa said when the Daily Mirror inquired about the Police claim.

“Anyway, I briefed the President about these claims,” he said adding that “I know the protocol and doesn’t want to breach the security of the President.” – See more at: http://www.dailymirror.lk/70355/i-am-unaware-about-such-an-incident-namal#sthash.wVtGdy36.dpuf

BBS to be charged with defamation and trespassing

The Colombo Fort Magistrate today ordered the police to file charge sheets against Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Organisation General Secretary Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera and several other Buddhist monks in connection with two cases filed against them.

The monks were today asked to step into the defence dock for the first time by the Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage. The case was fixed for June 16 –

MR has just started go on making public statements that today there are more than Presidents in the country – also being on the same cheating mode in the explanations being made in terms of Basil’s arrest. It is his way of manipulating the masses as had been in the past. But the masses should raise the question LET ALONE today- what happened to the electric chair billa as pulicly made by MR administration will be in action in case he would be given no 3 term ? No those gullible masses would not see it twice, but behave as if GON HARAKAs…. that is their nature. This srilanka filled with the average being far from educated. Only the books say that their literay rate is the highest in the region but actions are similar to that of high illiterate nations likd Somalia and Pakistan. Latter is the ground reality.
Political abusive men like Rajapakshes can live on them abusinng the poor people further.
But time comes that all the alleged charges will be proved. Wait and see – this is my wish.

Arjuna’s letter reflects what most law abiding citizens of this country has been urging for decades. Therefore very welcome. However, I have doubts whether its substance will be respected.

Both Nimal Lanza & Dayasiri were given new nominations by President Sirisena as SLFP leader. Dayasiri had no shame and bowed down like a little child in front of the President. It was embarrassing to watch.

Besides Arjuna’s family looks almost like the infamous Rajapassa clan in the making. CM Prassana Ranatunga is running around worshipping the rejected King. Nishantha Ranatunga should be in jail for the CSN fraud alone.

I wonder this country can be fixed at all. Unfortunately we don’t have a choice, but fix it.

      Cheers!

You’re right Ben, about the Ranatunga brothers Prasanna and Nishantha. Wonder how Arjuna will cope with Nishantha’s case in the event he is charged over the CSN case and other allegations about misappropriation of SLC funds and other scams at SLC that have been associated with him.

    Arjuna
Your letter and your request to the Prsident and thePM will carry a heavy weight on your request as we enjoy a bit of freedom of expression. In the past your request would have been pooh pooed and you would have been labelled as a Traitor.
So this is the difference The country need straight thinking politicians a statesman like you

Does anywhere in the world, political discussions in any country, use this ugly word “Conspiracy” this much, every thing by opponent is a Conspiracy… what a ugly word, ugly state of human mind…. three most awful words got into usage in last 2 decades are “Patriots, Traitors and Conspiracy”…..
Recently there was a Teledrama based on a story around 1815, some upcountry Lankans leaders trying to create resistance against British.. In the story, whenever there are problems among Sinhalese leadership, top leader always describe them as “Conspiracy – කුමන්ත්‍රණයක් ‘… is it in genes?… describing opponents as lowest form of humans…

Absolutely right scum like the Rajapaksha clan belong behind bars. They should never be allowed to even think of entering into political positions ever again.

Mara and his cronies have ruined hundreds of years of civilisation by misleading our innocent masses by devious and evil propaganda.

They are traitors of the highest order. If I had my way I would send all of them and their associates to the stake!

      0

The main problem has been how you would convince the Rajapakshe halloznated masses ?

It will take some more time them to turn their stupid mind sets. Else, I raise the question why those supporters still hang on him holding nationalitic flags passed to them. These kind of men and women are a curse to this country actually. So long those supporters will not realize the gravity of the problems that Rajapakseh deliberately made using poor man funds – nothing would become changed.
I think with the time, those inveistgation being underway will prove them ground realities of Rajapakshes frauds – frauds that are beyond all scales.

Who says it or who does a job is NOT important, so long the truth and what is right is told… he has hit the nails on their (crook politicians)head.. YES !! we along with certain politicians did the job in chasing away the crooks and the Jarapassas out of sight, pretty soon they would be out of the minds of Sri Lankans, while they languish in jail… for crimes committed, plundering of national wealth and inciting hatred among the communities….

Talke is cheep. It is easy to point the finger at others remember when Arajuna point the finger at others three of his fingers are pointed at himself. What a conundrum politicos in Sri Lanka so bankrupt (not with money) now public have to rely and elevate turncoats as been the saviour’s.

Hon.Arjuna – Thanks for forewarning the PM & the President about the dangers of being ignorant of the fact which you have mentioned. Both
of them show no signs of awareness of the impending danger. Today there
was an attempt, as media reports, on the life of the president and suspect was set free and PSD was not questioned. This is the only way for the past regime can come back to power and retain the executive Presidency.
People are puzzled and may tend to think whether both of them are playing a double game as the president keeps on inviting the former president, who should have gone on retirement, like any other past presidents of this country and other countries, to join hands and what is the necessity to invite unnecessary trouble, when they do not see eye to eye on policy matters. They may even think that people are there
with them for ever, not realising that the poor people think of their daily bread and butter and not about the policies of the parties. On the other hand, they may be even planning, separately,to drop the idea of forming a national govt.and instead, have their own party govt.(SLFP or UNP)and that may be the reason that both of them are soft on politicians involved in corruption. You said it right that nominations should not be given to opportunist, who could turn tables immediately
after the election and we go back to square one. Arjuna, you got to be little more vocal on this matter as you could see people losing faith in these two men.

    My Dear Arjuana,

Your comments are noteworthy. I too was watching with enthusiasm the positive changes in Sri Lankan politics. Unfortunately it seems like it had lost its momentum and direction. Your highlighting of this trend is quite timely. If Maithripala and Ranil cant do it we citizens of Srilanka must look for alternate people who can do the job.

We have to take face value of this letter as a sincere effort to clean up politics. However, I have some doubts about the conduct of his brothers, Prassana who is CM of Western province , who is behind MR and his other brother Nisantha ex secretary of Cricket Board about whom serious allegations of corruption, mismanagement have been levelled. What are his comments and observations on this.

It is true many of the discards who should be dumped into the dustbin try to comeback showing their allegience to Maithree and they should be punished for their offences committed during the previous regime and not accomodated in any position in the present government.

Sorry mate, Here is my apology, before Poorty gets annoyed and find fault with Uvindu. ( I just learned this from our ex Galle Bird Ms Samrasinghe).

I got you mixed up with that Tamil from the North who must be the disgruntled one in Scarborough.

Listen buddy, I have nothing against any race or caste, In fact I am a Dalit my self who can rub shoulders with the Elite,

It is the Dalits who always get reamed by our politicians and political parties.

look at the scum bags who are parading as servants of the Nation , who want us to be corruption, commission, and nepotism free cool dudes.

And see what they have done and are still engaged in .

Rajapaksa may have taken 10, 20 or 30 percent , but he has spent the rest to improve the country and lift the Economy the results of which we all can see..

What have the current lot done in their past lives.

Can you name even one good thin Ranil and or Cousin done for the country or the Nation?.

              Look at the President himself..

He couldn’t run the Health Dept and openly said that it was run by Mafia.

How many of them have been questioned or remanded?.

What did he do with Dr Mervyn as the Gen Sec of the SLFP?.

And you think they are the best thing for our inhabitants since sliced bread,

Batting and not liking to run is not a trait for a successful politico.
    Hence the ‘kathaa’.

If words can be put into actions then that would be nice. Will Nishantha R. be yet in SLC? Or will Arjuna R. make a deal to see his brother yet ruin the SLC. So much to the topic “family bizness”. Time will tell if he and others will have to digest their words and swallow it with a glass of Kassippu.

Arjuna beyound doubts you have now proved that sports not only makes the person physically healthy but also makes him a right thinker leading to effective leadership qualities. We are watching you closely, and at every stage you showed your leadership quality effectively from sports to Politics. You made SriLanka a great cricket nation in the entire world under your leadership. Now immensely contributing to make SriLanka a Model nation for good governance and democracy. Hats off to you. Continue your good work vigilantly and sharply. Senior leaders may ignore or sometimes even not aware of the full list you have in your mind of those corrupts, hooligans, cheaters, thiefs and similar type of guys in and out of the Parliament. It is now your duty to make the full list of these rogues in colloboration with like minded people and assist both the PM and the President to control and stop them entering the Parliament. MARA and his gangsters very much capable of spying and entering the opposite camps cleverly.
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT AN ADVISE BUT A SINCERE REMINDER TO A BUSIEST LEADER TO ENCOURAGE HIM IN HIS GREAT MOTIVES.
Take this rogue Tissa Attanayake for instance, who was in power in the UNP so long and finally let Down the nation and the people.
Long live good governance and Democracy in our motherland -SriLanka.

    Arjuna

    Well said.

Your credibility and standing will improve further when you are not seen with your bothers Prasanna and Nishantha.

Ha Ha – another humbug – if ever there was one – Why can’t he at least influence his brothers – Prasanna and Nishantha to see the truth in what he professes – they are in the forefront of trying to get MARA back – because they are among the guys who profited most during his unlawful abject tenure . The truth of the matter is that the Ranatunge family has cleverly planned out their political maneuvers so that no matter who is in power they will always be in a win – win situation . Just think back to the issues at the Cricket board and Arjuna was calling everyone under the sun a crook but was careful not to speak a word against Nishantha who was the mastermind behind all the illicit deals along with the Rajapkase’s !

This idiot doesn’t know whether he is Arthur or Martha,

He sucked up to Rajapaksa to get the Sports Ministry.

Having failed to score, he joined the Field Marshall.

Then he[Edited out] Ranil’s [Edited out] to get this Ports ministry.

If he wants corrupt people out, how can he report to Ranil, when Ranil’s mate fixed the Bond rate 3 percentage points above the market rate..

And made sure the Mahendran Family Trust will not run out of LKRs for the next 30 years.

Does this dude realize that Dr Mervyn and Mr Duminda also are his partners now.

Get a hair cut and go to the villages and train the talented poor kids how to play cricket, if you want to do real service to your motherland and the majority .inhabitants.

    Well Said Skipper,
You are a born leader which you proved by leading our cricket team.

You can guide the political leaders of our country to run the country properly.

Still better you take over as President

    Why Not!!!

It’s hard to believe that the Rajapakses will harm MY3 at this point of time. If something happens to MY3 and the position of the Presidency has to be filled the benefactor will be none other than Ranil as he is the PM. Even with the 19th amendment in place the Executive powers of the president are quite intact. So wouldn’t Ranil have a ray of hope of moving upwards??????
