Dangerous Game

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

Mahinda Rajapaksa’s plot to end the aragalaya at Galle Face Green with violence had boomeranged and set ablaze the entire country. He knew already how unpopular he had become when he visited Anuradhapura and got booed by his once supporters. After that his base instincts must have prompted him to stage a final showdown before departing from the political scene. He therefore invited or rather hired a crowd of supporters among whom were drunken men and goondas to listen to his bravado speech in front of the Temple Trees before allowing them perhaps on prior arrangement with police to disappear in batches and march towards the targeted venue at the Galle Face Green. What happened thereafter is now public knowledge.

There were two aspects in that bloody episode which are worrying. One was the failure of police officers to prevent the violence from happening. It should have been evident to any normal individual, let alone the police, who watched the developments in Temple Trees that something sinister and violent was about to happen. Kollupittiya police station is at the midpoint between Temple Trees and Galle Face and when the crowd walked in front of that station police should have stopped them, but they didn’t. How does one explain this inaction except to conclude that they were under orders from top not to stop MR’s hired guests? Anyhow this is not something strange, because even in the past, and in every communal riot that broke out against minorities the police had remained bystanders. This is part of the country’s political culture and system, which the new generation wants to change.

The second aspect was an equally disappointing one. It is the damage done to the heart winning image of peaceful protest demonstrated by aragalaya over the last four weeks or so. It won international admiration as an exemplar of peaceful protest. The behaviour of some of the defenders to pay back the attackers with the same coin had tarnished that image. Tisaranee Gunasekara’s “The End” captures this sentiment quite eloquently.

However, while the 225 parliamentarians are quibbling inconclusively to find a break through to the current impasse, events outside the parliament had sent a clear message that the entire regime with its president must quit. “Gota-Go-Home” and “No 225” are simple and very clear in their meanings. The resignation of MR and his cabinet, and measures to form an all-party interim government should ultimately end in the removal of Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Without his resignation or removal aragalaya’s mission will not be complete. The systemic change that it demands politically as well as economically is not possible by keeping one of the Rajapaksas at the helm.

It appears that even the saffron brigade would like to have him continue as President, because they see in him the embodiment of Sinhala Buddhist nationalism. The brigade still fails to realize that it is this ruinous philosophy that provided a safety valve to cover all the misdeeds committed by ruling regimes since 1948. Rajapaksa regime topped the record. While pretending to protect Buddhist Sasana it systematically bankrupted the economy through reckless mismanagement. What happened to the virtuosity that supposed to have been injected by the saffron brigade to bring splendour and prosperity? As that great scholar monk Walpola Rahula stated in his Sathyodaya, sasana is protected not by any government or the sangha but by the ordinary believers in Buddhism through their sincere adherence to the principles of Buddha’s teachings. The new generation wants to keep members of the sangha away from playing political games.

The opposition parties are playing a dangerous game by delaying an interim solution to the political stalemate. No one knows what negotiation is taking place between GR and the military. If the impasse continues one may witness a Myanmar type solution engineered by GR, which would certainly worsen the economic situation. As soon as GR came to power he purposely and strategically planted the military in positions of civil administration. Having tasted some control over that sector already total control over it would not be a problem if an opportunity arises. GR may provide that opportunity if he were to remain while opposition parties continue their quibbles. It is a dangerous game they are playing. Sooner GR goes better would be the environment for economic remedy.

“How does one explain this inaction except to conclude that they were under orders from top not to stop MR’s hired guests?”
The country have a poliical history of 75 years where the police and military were inaction because the police and military only to serve their masters not to the people. When the Parliamentarians protested in 1956 or 1958 violence against Tamils in Colombo or burning of Jaffna library or violence against Tamils in 1983 the police and military were not only inaction but also part of the violence.

The protestors at Galle Face were playing a dangerous game and stoking the anger of the suffering public. They the prelude to the violence, and lockdowns that followed.
Who led the Protestors at Gota gama? anonymous Pied Pipers on the internet and social media who support Washington and the IMF? Is DIGITAL COLONIALISM with anonymous bots taking over the country the name of the game as Parliament convenes on ZOOM while citizens are in curfew and lockdown? Democracy is being gamed in a cyberwar operation by those who have the technology and
ALL SIDES ARE GAMED – those who control the English Language internet and social media at this time DIVIDE AND RULE US.
How come these protests are not at Independence Square as historically all previous protests have been? Why are they at the same place targeted by the CIA owned ISIS claimed Easter Sunday attacks 3 years ago? Who was behind the Anonymous social media organizers? The US FBI’s Sonic Sonic?

        Dinuk,
“The protestors at Galle Face were playing a dangerous game and stoking the anger of the suffering public”
Really? Was the public suffering without gas, electricity, or petrol because of GGH? So it was the suffering public that beat up the protesters?
Does Naaki Mynah provide you with unlimited gas, petrol, electricity? Get real, woman. Whose side are you on?

US citizen Basil Jarapassa had been forced to leave. The other Rajapaksas would have had to go too..
Was the Gota Gama show meant to build up to a “Cascade of Violence” as per the de-stablization and chaos strategy Playbook that would benefit external actors seeking to control the economy in this strategic island though a Sovereign Bond Debt trap and DEFAULT to the IMF and Washington…?

The chaos that the Gota Gama is provoking appears staged to block a proper analysis of the Sovereign Bond (ISB) debt trap and staged economic crisis in Sri Lanka at this time and hence block solutions by a Media Show..

The public, overall, was not irritated with the GFG protesters up to the fateful day.
The protesters badly needed to broad base the resistance, which meant going beyond the GGH slogan.
Whatever the conspiracy was, the point is that there was popular sentiment in support of the protest, which has however been mostly middle class.
The general anger could have been harnessed for purposes contrary to that of whatever evil forces involved, by encouraging protesters to become politically serious, and engage with people from other regions and social layers.
Whatever the direction the protests go now, there is much to salvage in it for a social justice campaign.

I do not think this was “Mahinda Rakapakse’s plot” – his supporters got out of hand. There is no doubt that releasing a hostile crowd of Mahinda Rajapakse supporters into the already volatile situation was a huge mistake and a travesty. There are records of certain persons working up the crowd, and this is undenitable.

The police have been doing the right thing by exercising restraint to the point of losing two of their officers, however whoever opened the gates is to blame. I am looking forward to the legal process and jail sentences that will follow for these people and also their ‘first responders’ on the other side.

As for the ‘dangerous protesters’, the protests were started by the SJB political party, anyone can verify this using their search engine: “hirunika protests” reveals the following from the Daily Mirror from March 6th 2022.

“The protest took place a few hours after the Samagi Vanitha Balawegaya led by Hirunika staged a protest outside President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s residence in Mirihana yesterday.

The Samagi Vanitha Balawegaya staged a protest with regard to the rising cost of living and calling for solutions to a number of issues including power cuts and shortage of essential goods.

The protest commenced yesterday afternoon near Mirihana Junction and later the group went near the President’s house to hand over a letter.”

Wow, splendid investigative work. I thought you were into finance. Anyway, what Silly Lanka men couldn’t do is what Hirunika did. She took few disgruntled ladies with her and dared to protest right in front of Sir Fail’s house, thereby gave a wake up call to those slumbering masses. It’s courage and determination , nothing violent and dangerous as you try telling us. If public woke up from their slumber , so be it. Hats off to that courageous lady. There is nothing unlawful about Aragalaya, hence PM elect Ranil has ordered security, to not to intervene. The courts too have postponed their judgment on unlawful assembly, for now. It is Mara who instigated the thugs, turned violent and dangerous by attacking the protesters. You can keep looking for the legal process and jail sentence to Mara’s goons. By the way why do you thing there is court issued travel restriction on Mara and other instigators ??? You better stay in finance and leave others to rest.

There is another point deserving attention:
The Sirasa-Shakthi-MTV was pro protest from very early on. Later on typically 70% of news time was dedicated to the protest.
The other major occasion where the media group showed such dedication was to attack Ranil W as well as his supporters, especially Mangala Samaraweera (portrayed as a donkey in the runner at the bottom of the screen showing news) in what were UNP’s internal matters.
Interestingly it also went out of its way to protect Milinda Moragoda from charges of insider dealing.
I will not comment further on the ethical norms of the group which has worked hard to have its representatives in position in centres of power.
          *
Its continuing support for the GGH campaign has only one feasible reason: GR’s choice of RW over its client. Had the client beaten RW to the winning post, the trio will sing a different song.
Besides, a certain embassy is up to its knee in the new developments and that is causing problems for rather weakened the big boss.

The main problem in creating an interim administration is the number of SLPP MPs in parliament. It makes the opposition incapable of forming a government. This is the curse that keeps on giving. But Sajith and co must act. We need Karu as interim PM NOW. We also need a competent Finance minister. We cannot allow Gotler to carry on. The man is unstable and foolish. He cannot be trusted. Along with the three foreign powers a timetable for Gotlers departure MUST be agreed. If not the consequences can be terrible. AKD also needs to lend his support and be part of the interim government.

Ameer Ali, if current parliamentarians are reluctant to take up responsibility and challenges witch comes with it, we should consider people from outside of politics, just 10 to 15 of them, who are good enough to form an interim Govt. This is more of a temporary crisis management and not overall governing of country. In Europe such trial and error govt made up of politicians during crisis, did not last months, until right people were found. (Greece, Ireland ). During the worst recession and financial meltdown in the U.S , it was experts who were brought in by President Obama, actually did the job. On Obama’s part he just had to muster enough bipartisan support to implement, what was recommended by those experts to him. Say we get the best people , either living in Lanka or outside for 6 to 9 months, who are really good at what they do, and give them the responsibility and the politicians on their part can muster the support within parties and their support base. The current politicians are more concerned about their political future and “what is in there for them, short and long term “. In fact, there are not many politicians who have expertise or knowledge to manage such crisis. They still in turn will have to get the help of experts. In that case why wait for these politicians ??? Is Lanka open for out of box thinking ???

      Chiv,
It’s pretty obvious why Sajith doesn’t want to form a government even with SLFP and independent support. He doesn’t want to be blamed for a predictable failure or for heaping more burdens on the people, which will have to be done.
An alternative is Ranil for PM. He is unpopular but experienced. He could set up a technocratic cabinet. If he fails, he’ll only get more unpopular.

      • 1
        0

        OC,
There are no takers until, Gota goes home, if at all to implement a technocratic resolution, even with best of minds here and abroad or even foreigners??
If not there is no GUARANTEE that the plan put forward would be implemented w/o sabotage, like Easter Sunday episode and aftermath??!!
Example – Easter Sunday, 2019, it is blatantly apparent, Maithripala Sorrysena Gamarala Polongas’ action of, “going on pilgrimage and holiday”, coincidentally, and not returning back to Sri Lanka on hearing of the bombing attacks and coupled with not appointing an acting Defence Minister in his absence overseas, was the reason, which is being hidden and 19th amendment blamed!!
Sorrysena, should be charged for sedition and violating the constitution, which he undertook to uphold and dereliction of duty??
His excuse that he didn’t know is totally untenable in today’s 24/7 media worldwide, (Singapore); He has proved beyond all doubt, by opening his mouth, what an ignorant idiot he is??
Which fact all are trying to hide, unsuccessfully, as the idiot who tried, in vain, to “HIDE THE STOLEN PUMPKIN FROM DETECTION, IN A PLATE OF RICE??”
SLFP with GAMARALA AND ACOLYTES IN THE SADDLEIS POISON UNLIMITED!!!???

          Mahila,
“Easter Sunday, 2019, it is blatantly apparent, Maithripala Sorrysena Gamarala Polongas’ action of, “going on pilgrimage and holiday”,…”

When members of the Intelligence Service warned ‘Appaya’ about the activities of Muslim extremists in the East and requested him to take action, he had told ‘We cannot antagonize Muslims’ perhaps because Muslim MPs were saving Ranil’s Government. ‘Appaya’ compromised peace, security and stability of the country to save ‘Yahapalana’ Government and he should be in jail. But now he is trying to become the PM. What a joke!

Mahila, I agree without Rajapaksas going,, it’s pointless discussing recovry.. They have amended the constitution so much so it has now become constipation. That too, resign the very next day after getting reelected. Indeed country like no other. .

How ironic. In May 2009 thousands of innocent Thamizh civilians were deliberately killed and war crimes were committed against them by the Rajapakse government and armed forces on the shores of Nanthikadal. Now in May 2022 Hundreds of Rajapakse supporters and hired thugs were thrown not into distant Nanthikadal where there were no witnesses but into the Beira Laka in the middle of Colombo for everyone to see, by the same Sinhalese people who praised the Rajapakses for what they did to the Thamizh in May 2009. Karma is a bitch. Oh my god, I praise the ancient Thamizh god Elumazhaiyan in Thirupathi Thirumalai and dance like this praising him. I am sure the Rajapakses will appreciate me praising and dancing in honour of Lord Venkateshwara of Thirupathi ( meaning the sacred husband of goddess Luxmi in pure Thamizh). Thirumala or Thirumalai means the sacred hill in pure Thamizh.

      Pandi Kutti,
“In May 2009 thousands of innocent Thamizh civilians were deliberately killed and war crimes were committed against them by the Rajapakse government and armed forces on the shores of Nanthikadal.”

      • Is eliminating Tamil terrorists who carried out genocide of Sinhala Buddhists for three decades to grab their land in NE to create a separate State within Sinhale a war crime?
      • Is liberating about 300,000 Tamil civilians kept as a human shield by Tamil terrorists to save their sss a war crime?
      • Liberating hundreds of children grabbed by Tamil terrorist and recruited as ‘CHILD SOLDIERS’ and handing them over to their parents a war crime?
      • Providing shelter, food and other necessities to Tamil civilians who were rescued and to LTTE cadres who surrendered a war crime?

It was Tamil terrorists who committed war crimes and crimes against humanity targeting Sinhala Buddhists for three decades after passing Vaddukkodai Resolution and declaring war against Sinhala Buddhists.

Tamils cannot clean their blood-soaked hands by putting the blame on Rajapakse government and armed forces.

“The opposition parties are playing a dangerous game by delaying an interim solution to the political stalemate.”
What a typically stupid (cynical) statement Ameer Ali makes! This whole boru ‘Aragalaya’ is a subversive enterprise instigated by the Catholics (who stupidly have exonerated the Wahabist animals who committed the atrocity and are believing in a conspiracy by the then opposition! It is not surprising that those who worship a human in Rome as G-d could be so stupid. The most un-Christian Cardinal is asking for an eye for an eye.
To add to the irony, the Wahabists and other Muslim extremists who have scores to settle with MR (from no deals to COVID burial ban) are fueling the turmoil with buryani and imported RAP artists who die in the act. Of course, they are not strangers to fishing in troubled water because their own animalistic, myth-based so-called ‘religion’ has no ethics. Then came the JVP terrorists, Anthare, to take control of the violence, completing the nexus of evil forces.
The funniest and the most dangerous bit, if any, is the rush of people who could never win a presidential or parliamentary election (as history has shown) coming up with pent up demands about abolishing the Executive Presidency and reintroducing S19A. That is not going to help the ‘dollar crisis’ in anyway, but the bastards are not concerned.

Then why almost all Muslim countries consider Islam as the State religion. Most of the European countries consider that they are Christian countries. In Germany, there is a special tax to collect money for Church activities.
In USA, the President take the oath by placing the hand on Bible. In Sinhale, Buddhists have not told the President to place his/her hand on ‘Tripitaka’ to take the oath. In UK, they say ‘God Save the Queen’.

Indigenous Sinhala Buddhists have the right to decide what is best for their country.

Low level violence in self defence? Can anyone denounce any such?
Well timed criminal arson? Are you sure who organized it?
There is more than what meets the eye in these matters.
    Consider various possibilities:
    * The campaign itself could have been penetrated by double agents.
    * A ‘secret hand’ could have been waiting for the appropriate moment to stir violence and provide excuses for the government to take control.
    * There are worse sinister possibilities which I would rather not spell out here, at least right now.

My dear fellow SL citizens: Even though Gota is refusing to resign that does not mean he will not resign. It will come if the current condition continue. As a long Government high level Administrator I have seen all the good and the bad apple. There are plenty of good people in Sri Lanka who can run the country for 6 months. You do not need 225+1 to run. I will not appoint a single one. They are corrupt and dirty. We need to make aware of the bad apples that will be running in any election. We need a group of honest impartial committee to evaluate and say Mr. X is bad and he should not get peoples vote. The people should be aware of all culprits in sheep’s cloths. I am sure there are good SL people outside of SL. Call all the of them to come back to build the country. I am sure they will come. I will come too. Lets build SL and make it a better country than last 73 years of Sorry Lanka. It is a great country and we should make it shine by getting rid of all sorry corrupt politicians and corrupts Police, military and civil servants. Make Military, Police and judges as clean as shining Sun. They should be not involved in politics.

People who wants to abolish the executive Presidency is not open minded people. Executive presidency works as long as you make 4 parts of the government independent of each other. One check the other. No 1. Supreme court total independent and judges have to climb the ladder to get to the Supreme Court. None will be appointed by the president or parliament. No 2. The parliament. This should be the body that control all financials and pass laws. No 3 Attorney General and police. They should be one law enforcement body and nothing to do with the politicians. Only the AG will be named by the president and confirmed by the parliament. 4. Military is run by defense department it should be neutral to polics. But they report to the president.

Many years ago, I mentioned right here in this forum that Sri Lanka needs a military leadership. And my dream of having such is about to realize.

Only a military leadership and can fix this nation. Discipline is a must for these subjects. I’d start making a schedule for all Sri Lankans to follow.

    A template is as follows:
Early Morning roll call for the entire nation – 04:00 hours.
    Daily exercise – 04:30 hours
Homage to the supreme leaders (NGR, SS, KG, RSP etc) – 05:00 hours.
Breakfast made of Sri Lankan grown products (Kadala, cowpea, Mung) – 05:30 hours.
Educational courses (Nuclear science, martial arts etc) 06:00 hours.
    Work starts 07:30
    Day break – 12:00 hours.
Homage to the supreme leaders 13:30 hours.
Tea Break (Plain tea, Kurakkan biscuits, Thriposha) 15:00 hours
    Evening break 17:-17:30 hours
    Work ends 20:00 hours.
    Dinner 21:00 hours.
    Reproduction + sleep 21:00 hours.

Mark my words this country will be on the right track and will develop in no time.

What to the New Generation want next? I hope it is not the UNITY GoSL CONSISTING of the current lots of parliamentarians.
Let us have a NON -PARLIAMENTARIAN as the new PM who will select some [ may be 100 ]of the of the old parliamentarians who are educated & uncorrupt. Ministers can be from these parliamentarians or from the general public. We certainly don’t want the hooligans/ chilli throwers

AN URGENT NOTE to General Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Sri Lanka Army
    .
I observe a new, dangerous development in Sri Lanka.
In the absence of a PM who could secure the majority in Parliament, the President’s decision to reintroduce the 19A will lead Sri Lanka to an inevitable anarchy. As we recall, when the Easter Sunday suicide bombers freely roamed around the Colombo city, there wasn’t a single political authority to take the responsibility to even impose curfew. It was the then Army Commander General Mahesh Senananyake who took control of the situation and deployed troops on the streets to ensure public safety.
The President’s utter weakness has prompted Indian MP Subramanian Swamy to suggest to the Centre that the Indian Army should be sent to Sri Lanka. (I remember saying that this would happen.)
Moreover, violent protesters have now resorted to looting too, and there is no proper authority to stop them.
Therefore, I strongly suggest the Army Commander take control of the country temporarily, and hold a press briefing to issue a stern warning to violent protesters and inform them of who is in control.

      (Part!)
      Champa,
      Morning.
      Your reference,
      Quote,
      “The President’s
      A. UTTER WEAKNESS HAS PROMPTED INDIAN MP—————————–he Indian Army should be sent to Sri Lanka. (I remember saying that this would happen. All the Kudos in that regard w/o doubt belongs to “you and to you only” and acknowledged)
Moreover, violent protesters have now resorted to looting too, and THERE IS
      B. NO PROPER AUTHORITY TO STOP THEM.”
      My take is, (answers)
      Question A
      A. Who is INDIAN MP SS? and
      B. Why is he sticking his nose into SL affairs?
      Question B
      1. Resignation of PM, (ineffective or deliberately kept silent, self-confined, allowing country to “Run Aground”) metaphorically does not affect proper authorities to act? They are in place?!
      2. No adducible reason to negligence/inadvertence by ex-PM except ineptness – mean MaRa!
      3. Therefore HIS ABSENCE NOW, does not impact/make any difference!! People Say GROBR!
      4. The same comments, applicable to Cabinet because of uneducated fools??!!
      5. There are people appointed to exercise the necessary action,
      a. IGP,
      b. Attorney-General,
      c. Secretary Defence are there in position and deemed to take necessary action
      d. Only important act necessary is for EP reconvene parliament to activate emergency?

    • 1
      1

      (Part II)
      6. EP must do 5(d) above without any further delay within next 2 days, (comply statute) to:
      a. To ratify or annul emergency declared and regulations thereto before 16th May
      b. Convened Parliament to elect one already amongst them or New National List MP as Future PM thereon!!
      Why should one propagate?
      I. Military government (Army, Navy, Air Force)??
II. Governance is not their job training???
III. Job of Tri forces (Army, Navy and Air Force) is basically limited to deal with external and internal threats to SL security??!! We have none, peaceful!!
IV. Assist Police, if required only, maintain peace!!
Contrary, country peaceful and no looting??!!
Responsible persons attributed for Looting and smuggling Loot overseas is now confined to “Happy Island Naval Base” in Trincomalee, NE Sri Lanka, brought there by SLAF Helicopter from Police grounds, lock stock and barrel!!
Meantime, plaint filed by Maithri Gunaratne PC, Fort magistrate court, in respect of the violence at GFG on last Monday attacking innocent participants at “GOGOTAHOME” MR as 1st suspect, awaiting development soon!!
Don’t know how that case pans out??
May be thrown out by “API THAMAI KERE” GANG
      That is another story

No one takes Su. Swamy serious here in India. Why Lankans (except Champa)?? Su . Swamy is angry because protesters burned his close friend Mara’s ancestral house and hence he wants India to intervene. Why would the President disagree with that. Champa did not notice Su. Swamy’s recent visits to Lanka to help Rajapaksa brothers. Champa ‘s name must be in the current list released by govt, instigating racial hatred and violence, on social media.

“No one takes Su. Swamy serious here in India.”
          Nice to know.
Pity that some important Indian media do not think so: they keep reporting him.

Could you list the Indian media. I only came to know from Lankan media , pretty much every media, to the extent, one Muslim MP giving statement to media. Resuscitation of LTTE again was reported by Hindu . Su. Swamy is currently busy working with Hindu promoting Hindutva in anticipation of coming Karnataka elections.

Can you name a few misdeeds committed by ruling regimes since 1948 because the ruinous philosophy provided a safety valve to cover them.

Do you have a problem if Buddhist monks see the president as the embodiment of Sinhala Buddhist nationalism?

    Good evening B22
I see you have a bundle of conspiracy theories and really wish I had your sources and resources.
I am no admirer of the blundering cardinal nor do I believe the edicts of Pope are infallible, when the Roman empire itself crucified Christ. That said you seem to know for sure that this is a catholic conspiracy to kill innocent believers and that they even exonerated the Wahabis of who I belive exist but were not part of this sri lankan story !. Both these minorities to be sadly at the receiving end in Sri lanka The people of the catholic or Islamic faith can excercise a freedom of worship and the Aagalya subscribes to it.

Suprise suprise none of the witnesses or the investigators made these wild accusations although I admit the investigations are muffled, but seem to point in entirely the opposite direction. In fairness I think anybody including the cardinal has a right to ask for Justice and that is not to be confused with “eye for an eye” It is actually known as state responsibility which he is entitled to ask for.You are certainly running ahead of my logic by calling it unchristian.

My thoughts are that ethnoreligious politics helps a brand of politicians and people who have not shown a capacity to make this nation prosperous depite borrowing.
