Dayan Jayatilleka’s “Balance” Is Out Of Balance

I am amused to observe Dayan Jayatilleka (DJ) jumping up like Jack in the box upon getting the news that the UNP General Secretary, Attanayake, had crossed over to the government side. DJ cries: “the balance is restored.” There are two major flaws in DJ’s “political analysis.” Firstly, it is rendered false by actual statistics. Secondly, DJ’s “analysis” place an exaggerated value on cross-overs in affecting public perception. Cross-overs are now becoming such an unbelievable thing that its potential impact on public perception is on a curve of diminishing returns. I do not claim to be a “political analyst” but these flaws in DJ’s reasoning seems utterly evident to me.

With regard to the first mentioned flaw readers are invited to take a look at some valuable statistics furnished by the Daily Mirror in its issue of 10th of December. This show the relative preference votes obtained by the respective cross-overs on both sides to date at the last elections.

Government cross-overs:

Tissa Attanayake- came in from the national list and so cannot show a voter base at all

Jayantha Ketagoda-22,193 votes

Cross-overs in support of Common Opposition Candidate:

Rajitha Senaratne-66710 votes

Dayan with MSDuminda Dissanayake- 101,384

Navin Dissanayake-   43,514 votes

Wasantha Senanayake-51,124 votes

Rajiva Wijesinghe- National List. No votes

Arjuna Ranatunge-27,796 votes

Perumal Rajathurai- 49,228 votes

Unais Farook- 10,851 votes

MKDS Gunawardena-19,734 votes

Hirunika Premachandra-139,034  votes

Jayatissa Ranaweera-40,382 votes

Peshala Jayaratne-37,547 votes

Prasanna Solangaararachchi- 43,332 votes

The second flaw is becoming evident by the growing support for the Common Opposition Candidate, Maitripala Sirisena, despite the crossovers to the government side. Political jumping has now become an incredible joke that only serves to demonstrate absurdity, corruption and chaos in governance that is a direct the outcome of the Presidential Executive system prevailing in Sri Lanka. Hence, the Common Opposition benefits by this ugly spectacle.

      A stupid analysis as usual.

The ‘Manape’ votes the thieves who crossed over was due to their representing the UPFA and not their personal popularity. When they cross over they will loose 3/4 of it. (Take Navin Dissanayake as an example).

So all the counting of votes is going to take Aiyo Sirisena nowehere.

      Shyamon Jayasinghe –

Why do you want to waste your time DJ , a Shill and whitewasher of Medamulana MaRa?

      Please use Common sense.

If you have too much time on your hand in the Australian summer, can you please write and complete the common sense pamphlet, to be printed in Sinhala, Tamil and English. Get your contacts in Lanka, to fill balloons with paint and throw at the MaRa cutouts. They are illegal to begin with.

This is a good assignment for the Pothe gura from Mamname, and could help defeat Mara.

See what JVP is doing. They just do it. Talk to the common opposition…

‘‘Defeat despotic regime! Rally for Democracy” throughout the island

The JVP launched the campaign to distribute the leaflet titled ‘‘Defeat despotic regime! Rally for Democracy” throughout the island opposite Colombo Fort Railway Station today (10th) with the participation of its leaders.

The Leader of the JVP Anura Dissanayaka, its General Secretary Tilvin Silva, Information Secretary Vijitha Herath, Member of its Political Bureau Sunil Handunneththi MP and Members of its Central Committee Ramalingam Chandrasekar, Lakshman Nipunarachchi, Samanmali Gunasinghe and a large number of party activists were present.

Mr. Dissanayaka speaking to the media:

      Common Sense (pamphlet)

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Sense_%28pamphlet%29

Common Sense[1] is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1775–76 that inspired people in the Thirteen Colonies to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain in the summer of 1776. In clear, simple language it explained the advantages of and the need for immediate independence. It was published anonymously on January 10, 1776, at the beginning of the American Revolution and became an immediate sensation. It was sold and distributed widely and read aloud at taverns and meeting places. Washington had it read to all his troops, which at the time had surrounded the British army in Boston. In proportion to the population of the colonies at that time (2.5 million), it had the largest sale and circulation of any book published in American history.[2]

Common Sense presented the American colonists with an argument for freedom from British rule at a time when the question of whether or not to seek independence was the central issue of the day. Paine wrote and reasoned in a style that common people understood. Forgoing the philosophical and Latin references used by Enlightenment era writers, he structured Common Sense as if it were a sermon, and relied on Biblical references to make his case to the people.[3] He connected independence with common dissenting Protestant beliefs as a means to present a distinctly American political identity.[4] Historian Gordon S. Wood described Common Sense as “the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era”.[5]

Exactly! Well said, Shyamon! What I can’t stand about DJ is the sense of shamelessness with which he uses radical theorists like Marx and Althusser to covertly support the agenda of this shameless Rajapakse regime.

“Shyamon! What I can’t stand about DJ is the sense of shamelessness with which “

        1. DJ has NO Shame, just like the other Mara shills and cronies.

        2. SJ is wasting his time writ about DJ.

        3. SJ should help the Common Opposition in writing and articulating the message people, in sinhala, Tamil and English

        4. SJ should FOCUS on activities for defeating MaRa. The populace do not care about DJ.

If Dayan Silva/Jayathilaka is a honest person to him, it is high time him to prove it to the nation. Almost every second living in the country is feared of MR violent culture being carried out using BBS and his brother with record of butcher qualities along during the post war episodes.

Today, wheeler driver to anyone would express their independent view about the ground reality of the country are feared of their lives as had been the case in late 80ties. Most o fthem want a better life but sky rocketed cost of living make them all unhappy as no time is being used for thinking anything else but survival.

If the man – being refered by UPFA idiots these days are clever minded, why DJ to still stay stick on to MR is incomprehsible to anyone to this day. All right thinking ones would never rethink but go against the bugger who has abused the natons funds for his luxurious life.

He made a trip to India whose funds have been abused ? Jaya niyathai .. all right thking ones would enjoy nektar by 9th January

Yes, the Math Does not add up.

So, DJ is a shill and white washer for MaRa so he will do what is in his best interest.

Shyamon Jayasinghe, I have no seen the sri lankan version of the Common sense Phamplet , just like the one Thomas Paine produced in 1776 for the american revolution.

Would you and your buddies along with the Common sense Team produce one, print and distribute ? Keep it to less than 47 pages.

After All, you are the Maname Pothhe Gura.

We need a Common sense Pothe Gura to Retire Medamulan mara.

    Would You?

Actually, I don’t think DJ was referring to cross-overs when he said balance is restored. What he meant was that now there is a more powerful force in place to counter the Government.

Did you write that commerce book we used to read for AL?

Is Sahaymon counting the chooks too early?..

Obviously these are not not Elvis Prestlys Michael Jacksons and even Gamini and Malani Fonseka…..Right…

My Elders asked me to mention a bloke called MGR as well so that Shaymon’s stats will look even better.

Two Politicians who are supposed to look after our Indian decent Tamil brethren have also joined JHU to support the future PM Ranil to look after our Dalits..

Wonder why Sahaymon omitted the 5 Mil Fonny scored last time and 1 Mil of Sambandan’s Vellalas.

I know Fonny quipped the other day that he was forced by Ranil to sit with the Tiger supporters, when he had a go at the President himself last time..

Dayan should stick to dissing his old mate Ranil.. I guess.

Or one more thing ..This is hot off the Press in Colombo.

I wasn’t joking when I mentioned that Mervy was packing his bags.

He has already moved his personal belongings from his Ministerial Office.

And waiting for the nod from his mate Mangala ,to visit Srikotha and greet the CF Leader in his trademark style by prostrating in front with a bunch of Organic Beetle Leaves.

Just a minute.. my Elders tell me he won’t greet the CC because Mervyn called him a F*** W ** when annoyed by a question from a reporter….

While the cross-overs in terms of the number of voters shifting towards the oppostion, the emerging of a strong opposition with a number of prominent politicians which has provided the opportunity to bring to open discussion issues of corruption and other abuses of the MR clan of which the people were afraid to talk of until now. This opportunity will further erode the vote-base of MR and Co.

  • 7
    0

    Dear shyamon.
Thank you very much for your rationalism. I too doubted many times about interior motives of Dayan. Sometimes he writes for the sake of writing . It looks that he has got support from MR family to write like that . We know that the entire country is against to this system, against to nepotism, against to family ruling, against to all sorts of corruptions and agaisnt to perverting course of justice by MR. Our political culture has been destroyed. Look at the people in parliament today and Look at the qualifications of some those who are behind MR and co.
What basic qualifications do they have? Some of the MPs in parliament even do not have GCSE qualifications. Most of them are taken by MR into his fold. What more is drug dealers, robbers and killers are in this parliament today’.
What sort of legislation these people can propose for people? Do not we have qualified people in Sri Lanka? What crime public have done to rule over them by these thugs? Do not we need to have some sort of political reforms in this country.’
Dayan does not care about this ? Dayan does not talk about this ? His logics tells him that this is normal in our politics. Look at the nepotim of MR. What qualifications Basil and Goata,Namal and other have to do politics. Do not we need some constructive political reformation in this country ? Do not we need some academic and professional qaulfications for the MPs we send into this parliament?
Sri Lanka is one of best country with rich human resources and highly educated people. Srilankans are intelligent people they do not deserved to treated like this by some political thugs. Let people choose their representatives as they like and let qualified people come forward and do some constructive politics in the interest of nation, people snd country not in the interest of family dynasty
Look at people around MR. What can they do for the country
They have already damaged the economy of this country. People will have to pay back interests for many decades because of MRs wrong economic policies
Have a cursory look at some of people around MR
Most of MPs around him are unqualified or do not have visionary thinking
People like Attanayake does not have any credentials to get votes as shyamon points out . He has been working as a spy for MR and he can not make any contribution or even he does not have popular support from people . I think in the interest of our nation more that 50% of people in parliament should removed from their post and they should be sacked or sent home: most of them are useless or a burden to this country. They lead a luxury life with public money .

A new generation of politicians from all communities should come forward to lead this nation and to give leadership for this country in our modern age
People with international exposure, with shred diplomatic and academic background should be norminated
Look people like Aswer. fouzi. Ataullah, Mervin Silva, Hizbullah, Abdul Kader, Karuna, Davanantha, and to name a few .
People like these are a burden to our nation. They do not have basic qaulfications to be legislators in this parliament: they do not have any professional or academic or legal backgrounds to serve this nation. They may have some good qualities or some poltical interests and yet they do not have any leadership qualifies to lead our nation.
They’re so many people like this in our parliament. To be honest they should not be in parliament rather they should be doing their own business rather than damaging public interest of this nation.
A poltical reform is a timely needed issue in Sri Lanka today
Let us all Sinhalese., Tamils and Muslims as one family do some thing in this election and we all vote for M. sirisena to see a change in politics and let the change starts with him.

I do not have any ill feeling about any one and yet why should unqualified people go to parliament ? They can not do any constructive work for our nation. See what they talk even some of them do have skills to speak out in public or make a point in public or discuss a issue in public? What crime Sri Lanka people have done to ruled by this unqualified people.
I tell MS that when he give normination from a national list he should set some qualifications to be selected from a national lists such as acadmdic qualifications or diplomatic qualifications. Or professional qualifications to be elected from the national lists
Our people need a good, vibararant, honest, intelligent, charismatic and patriotic leadership at all levels , from all communities not corrupted people

    • 0
      1

A National List serves only one purpose in Sri Lanka. It is certainly not utilized to augment intellectual inadequacies of the elected representatives. it is for the purpose of increasing the votes for the government inside parliament, and verbally support the government misdeeds.

Sri Lanka does not need a National List. What is needed is an official, but voluntary, unpaid, think tank, with legal protection to protect its independence. Government may refer questions of national importance. Questions and answers should be available to the public.

DJ often uses his other end when making anything these days. Many doubt whether the man is sane. He is confused as his failed bringing his beloved -Premadasa the candidate. Self proclaimed camelian has almost lost his crediblity among the nation. How can he become this much cheap being unable to decide whom to support ? If this kind of so called experienced diplomats do so, what talks about the masses – of the island nation ?

    Shyamon,

There are the unfortunate amongst us who have to do things for their survival, notwithstanding the absurdity of their endeavors.

IF the Opposition can minimize election day fraud to single digits, the will of the voters shall prevail.

IF the Opposition plans are leaked by insider’s and their vote protection measures are nullified by a change in Rajapakse tactics, we can all cry over spilt milk on the 9th.

The transfer of Police high-ups, the staffing changes at the govt print etc are all preliminary steps in the Rajapakse strategy.

  • 7

Dayan’s problem is he does not like Ranil and Chandrika. Instead of giving objective political view, he makes absurd comments

  • 6
    0

Dayan’s analysis of the Uva election was proved wrong. Similarly all his comments re: the presidential election will also be proved wrong. His comments are based on the payments he receives from President Rajapakse. He expects President Rajapakse to appoint him back as an ambassador when Rajapakse wins. Unfortunately Dayan is going to learn a bitter lesson and will not know where to hide his face or the whole body.

I am sorry but Syamon Jayasinghe simply has to be rushed to a mental hospital, just as those who have congratulated him on his critique of me. He writes: “I am amused to observe Dayan Jayatilleka (DJ) jumping up like Jack in the box upon getting the news that the UNP General Secretary, Attanayake, had crossed over to the government side. DJ cries: “the balance is restored.”

WHERE THE DICKENS HAVE I WRITTEN OR SAID EVEN A WORD IN ANY MEDIA, ABOUT TISSA ATTANAYAKE’S CROSSOVER? DOESN’T JAYASINGHE UNDERSTAND BASIC ENGlISH? EVEN A CURSORY GLANCE AT MY ARTICLE WILL SHOW THAT IT IS ABOUT A BALANCE BEING RESTORED IN LANKAN POLITICS BECAUSE RANIL WICKREMESINGHE HAS BEEN REPLACED AS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE BY THE EMINENTLY ELECTABLE MAITHRIPALA SIRISENA, THEREBY ENSURING A KEEN COMPETITION AT THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE. THE ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN AFTER SUBSTANTIVE DISCUSSION WITH BOTH CANDIDATES. THE NAME TISSA ATTAMAYAKE DOESN’T APPEAR EVEN ONCE IN MY ARTICLE!

Has Shyamon and have most of you guys gone completely bonkers? Or are these writers completely unable to comprehend basic English? Can you show me one, single, solitary mention of Tissa Attanayake in my entire article? One shred of evidence that ‘a balance restored’ was about the Attanayake defection? Obviously it pertained entirely and exclusively to the restoration of competition in our politics because Maithripala Sirisena was offering an electable alternative unlike Ranil Wickremesinghe. You guys either need to visit an optician or a psychiatrist or both.

      Dear Mr Know all,

let us know please why you as a self proclaimed analyst see it right even yet ?

If anybody would travel across colombo get it that the country is ruled by the dictatorship of MR regime. I happened to vomit before his placards – not being able to see the man s faces whereever I went to. Now with orders given authorities to clear them – but I dont think MR would take prompt actions against those who placed them. Are these not election violence directly from MR office ? In such an enviroment you guys ( so called senior men of lanken politics) to stay as if are blind and deaf – is beyond all bearing I would say. WHAT MORE TALKS you would want to bring and go against the opposition ? Stop and just listen to your heart feelings at least for seconds.. that will then guide you SO CALLED doc – that will then help the masses to find their ways as well.
Just because your extrement filled brains seem not allowing you to think properly – please dont misguide the masses that have now reached to all appalling levels being unable to face it the way Rajapakshes loot continuously.
Those highways could have been made using gold posters with the sums they spent for build them. But adding all well shaped up blatant lies to further fool the majoirity folks while in the same time abusing tax payers funds even for their pilgrims- what more need to be there you guys to change your mind ?

Dayan is a non starter. I have no idea why people give him a second thought. His political analysis is laced with such inconsistency the only conclusion I can arrive at, is he only has an agenda for himself.

    • 2
      1

Dayan is a most devious person – who is yet to find his own way. His criticques are the worst – sometimes, his interviewers cant know where DJ is standing. I believe this is all now his brain cells are being vanished falling him to Demecia. There were articles in the recent past, he fealessly criticised MR regime. – Recalling the interview President had with Alja seera before Chogem – there the DJ was attacked by MR callin him a powerful NGO man, but the man DJ who has no shame dinnered with MR in the following day itself and changed his views. May be DJ should have offered something very valubble in that meeting asking him to write only good of MR. Since then we did not read anything against MR – but more contra to RW. This is how this DJ reacted in the recent past. I believe, he has no place in current lanken society- has lost all credibility if he had once.

  • 1
    2

    Dear Dayan,
Cool down. The article doesn’t base its essence on Tissa Attanayake crossover. It just says that “you were jumping……upon getting the news…TA had crossed over”. This is a lapse in the write-up. But two things should be highlighted. One, around the same time your article appeared, the crossover also happened (not linked, though). Two, if one reads your article in the cacophony of voices resonating in the background, informed by your repeated references to personalities in your articles such as Sajith P, Ranil W, Chandrika, it is difficult to fault anyone for assuming that the news of TA crossover may have contributed to some “jumping”. This is a trivial lapse, dear DJ, compared to the colossal ones in logic that appear in some of your fascinating analyses. In any case, by your subtle, but crafty references to “discussion in English”, “Elvys”, among many others, it appears that your balance is so “out of balance”. In my view, you have lost the balance in this case, like the opposition allegation of MR printing billion rupees worth posters castigating Ranil W in the expectation that the latter would be the candidate from UNP, since you have also allowed the so-called Ranil factor to erode your analytical capability. Please come out of all this, balance will come naturally. Nobody needs to go to Angoda. Shyamon and several others who comment here, please do not get affected by the logicality or illogicality of what DJ and persons of his ilk write. Then you all tend to make the same mistakes that they. How can I call it, domino effect, or vicious cycle? Best, Imad

    Mr.Shyamon Jayasinghe

Dayan Jayatilleka’s “Balance” Is Out Of Balance.

The word you are looking for is DAYAN IS SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL. That is because he has been over wound by the news that MRs demise is round the corner and for your information every “Pamparams” grind to a halt.

As usual those who are retired has a lot of time to write and engage in controversy. What is lacking today is an agenda for the Nation. Sri Lankans must draw up one and chart their course.

  • 0
    0

We expected a bit more mature analysis from a person like Dayan Jayatilleka. Even if we compare the cross over of Mitreepala Sirisena against Tissa Attanayake the only similarity is that they are both Secretaries of their parties.

Mithreepala Sirisena was a highly popular leader of SLFP while Tissa Attanayake could not even win his own electorate. Also MS gave up his ministerial post and lots of perks to join the opposition while TA joined the government to get a Ministerial post along with lots of other perks at the expense of Sri Lankan tax payer.

CAN DJ PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW THE BALANCE IS RESTORED.

    • 0
      0

Can he also explain as to what factors constitute a vibrant democracy and how he concludes Sri Lankan is one of them?

  • 0

Dear Mr Jayatilleka, this is a classic example of a basic truth in such matters. What people say or write about you is simply based on perceptions and not based on objective facts. Many Tamils who comment here are angry that people like you (and RW) defended the war to the best of your ability. The Sinhala Right and the ‘Helabima kandaya’ are angry that you supported the implementation of 13A and the LLRC………so really you are not the darling of either side…….you should be used to this by now.

What matters most are you intentions, and I for one will respect you for some of the things you have said pretty consistently…….of course based on my limited understanding of your recent writings. As far as I know you have expressed the views that:
    1. Seperatism needs to be defeated. In the process of doing so, collateral damage is sometimes inevitable…Just like in the Great War at ‘Kurushestra’. Public officials who have to deal with some of the fall outs of such a destructive war ( such as the discourses at Geneva) have to be economical with the ‘ Truth’…….just as was the case with the ‘Kurushestra’ war
    2. Once the war was over, it was imperative to implement a just political solution that:
    A. Acknowledged the pain and suffering endured by a Community – the LLRC was the beginning of this process
    B. Allowed the space for the minorities to protect and develop their own cultural identities – the 13A was the beginning of this process
    C. The geopolitical and moral realities of the situation gives little or no other option to the Government

To the best of my knowledge and understanding you expressed the above views consistently, in an articulate fashion and in doing so antogonized the ‘ Hela Bima Kandaya’ within the Government……and thereby lost your job.
…….for that I am grateful. I am sure I am not alone in this.

I am skipping your prasasti (praise, a short laudatory hymn, a eulogium, a panegyric) of Dayan and dive straight into to your comment.

I am also skipping your comments 1, 2, A, B and C for obvious reasons.

“To the best of my knowledge and understanding you expressed the above views consistently, in an articulate fashion and in doing so antogonized the ‘ Hela Bima Kandaya’ within the Government……and thereby lost your job.”

I am also skipping your yet another prasasti.

“…….for that I am grateful. I am sure I am not alone in this.”

When you are alone its bit scary out there.
