Closer to 60% of the candidates contesting Parliamentary Election have so far submitted their assets and liability declarations according to the information received from the Election offices throughout the island, says Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL).

Elections Commissioner, Mahinda Deshapriya had instructed all the candidates, including those contesting as Independent to submit their declarations on or before 30th July 2015. The Commissioner has declared that the candidates who do not submit assets and liability declarations will not be issued with candidature identity card.
Interestingly, more than 75% of the candidates from the three major parties Freedom Alliance (UPFA)United National Front & Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna have submitted their assets and liability declarations. All the candidates belong to Janasetha Peramuna have submitted their declarations.
In the Kandy, Nuweraeliya and Trincomalee, districts more than 60% of the candidates have submitted while in few districts including the Matara district less than 50% have submitted their assets & liabilities declarations.
TISL believes in an election declaration of candidates assets and liability is very vital and it’s improves integrity of an election. Hence TISL requests all the candidates who have failed to submit their assets and liability declarations to submit them within the next few days to meet the deadline announced by the Commissioner of Elections.

Did they submitted the assets under the names of their cronies and in black money in overseas banks namely Seychelles, Ukraine, Switzerland, St. Kitties and Dubai?
Do you expect them to submit the 10%-30% commissions details (through Gota’s ‘proper channel’ of course)to be declared as well??

This is very important for the country – the submission of assets and liabilities.
However, let’s ask ourselves why some have not done this seemingly very necessary thing.
Three reasons I can think of:
Obviously, the most serious for us is that they are crooks.
Secondly, for some it may be a very complicated thing.
Thirdly, although their names are there, they may not be seriously interested – or “committed” may be a better word, to pay any attention to this. For instance, there are some surprising names on the National List of the J.V.P. – a retired Auditor General, or Chrishmal Warnasuriya. I’m not being critical of these people, it’s just that you wouldn’t expect their names to be there.
How, oh, how, is the average voter going to make up his mind. WE, who contribute our two cents worth have the time to read and to work things out. This entire system has to be changed to something easily understood.

We Sri Lankan votes want Election Commissioner Deshapriya be Impartial and non-Party working man?
His -EC of impartial is doubtful and susceptible that EC work Patten is more towards assist of UNP election campaign.
EC has lost that credibility of working methods and monitoring that in favor of UNP led election campaign last couple of weeks; he has not properly implementing election rules laid down by Parliament avoid to address violating rules & laws by UNP Ranil , Ravi Sajith and JVP.
Deshariya is seems to be more than Election Commissioner that he is look like moral supporter of UNP er.

This “Asset And Liability Declaration” by the nominees to contest the elections is yet another “JOKE” in this country. Just think of the case of an applicant who submits and application for a job in an establishment (State or Private sector) without annexing the stipulated copies (sometimes certified) of certificates and other credentials. His/her application will be forthwith rejected without assigning any reasons. In the same manner, if a candidate who wishes to contest at an election submits his/her nomination paper without the stipulated documents, such as the “Asset & Liability Declaration” that application must be REJECTED forthwith. All nominees and the Political Party Secretaries are made aware of the requirement and if still they do not comply with the stipulated requirements, why “haggle” on this without “REJECTING” the nomination. What is the use of not issuing the “Identity” cards for those who failed to do so? Most of these “Roughs” are very well known to us and we need not have them display their “Identity”. We have all the “Pandiths” who boast of their “qualifications”, “competencies” etc; but cannot stand up against this type of show of “disrespect” to law and regulations. This is another matter that needs to be addressed by the new Government at least in the name of “Yahapalanaya” – Good Governance.

The question here is whether the EC did not realise that Poya and week
end holidays were intervening,when he fixed the deadline for submission
of the statements of assets and liability by the candidates. As of
yesterday 40 % of the candidates have not submitted the statements so far and EC had to go behind them by giving a revised date.Does this mean that they do not care for govt. directives and these are the men and women who want to represent the people. Will the EC have the guts to suspend them from contesting if these candidates do not beat the revised deadline date.
He should take Indian EC as an example as candidates are ‘shit’ scared
of the EC, who is like a ‘king” during election time and law breakers are punished instantly.
Here in Sri lanka, public money is wasted to remove placards and wall
posters . He should ensure political parties involved should be debited
with the costs and take some stern actions against defaulters.
