Vietnam has risen from the ashes of war to become one of Asia’s most dynamic and resilient economies. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka, despite similar beginnings, continues to face economic stagnation, fiscal distress, and developmental setbacks. The contrasting outcomes of these two nations—both of which experienced protracted conflicts, colonial rule, and periods of political turbulence—offer vital insights into the ingredients of sustainable post-conflict recovery and long-term economic success.
Over the past few decades, Vietnam has undergone a stunning transformation, rising from one of the poorest nations in Southeast Asia to a dynamic global economic force. This remarkable shift is not merely a tale of resilience but a testament to the country’s strategic policy choices, market-oriented reforms, and its ability to navigate and adapt to global economic trends. Today, Vietnam stands as a shining example of economic success, garnering the attention of governments, investors, and economists worldwide.
Vietnam has an estimated population of about 100 million in 2024, making it one of Southeast Asia’s most populous countries. It has a young and diverse population, with the Kinh ethnic group making up the majority. Population density is especially high in urban centers like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, contributing to a dynamic workforce. The country spans 331,210 square kilometers and features diverse geography, including mountains, forests, and a long coastline along the South China Sea, which supports its agricultural success and natural resource development.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, has a much smaller population of 22 million in 2024. Its population is ethnically diverse. The country has an aging population, with an increasing number of elderly citizens. Its land area is 65,610 square kilometers, and it is known for its rich biodiversity, including tropical rainforests, beaches, and mountains. Sri Lanka’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean has significantly influenced its history and economy.
Asia’s 15 largest economies
Vietnam has been ranked 12th among Asia’s 15 largest economies by Seasia Stats, with a projected GDP of 506 billion USD in 2025. The ranking highlights Vietnam’s rapid growth, largely fueled by booming manufacturing and foreign investment. With an expected 7% GDP growth in 2024, Vietnam stands out as one of the fastest-growing economies globally. While China, Japan, and India remain Asia’s top three economies, Vietnam’s rise places it just behind Thailand and the Philippines, and ahead of several other regional players. Indonesia leads Southeast Asia with a projected GDP of 1.5 trillion USD, followed by Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines.
In contrast, Sri Lanka ended its 26-year civil war in 2009. While the end of conflict created expectations of a rapid economic revival, the post-war years were marked by inconsistent policy, rising debt, and missed opportunities for structural reform.
Reform to Resilience
Vietnam’s economic progress is nothing short of extraordinary. In 1986, real GDP per capita stood at under US$700, by 2023, it had climbed to nearly US$4,500 (constant USD). The country has consistently maintained GDP growth rates between 6% and 7% for much of the last two decades, with projections of 6.5% growth in 2025.
Key drivers of Vietnam’s success include:
* Market-Oriented Reforms: Đổi Mới ushered in a shift from a centrally planned economy to one open to private enterprise and foreign investment.
* Export-Led Growth: Vietnam became a global manufacturing hub, exporting textiles, electronics, and agricultural products.
* Foreign Direct Investment (FDI): Investor-friendly policies attracted multinational corporations like Samsung, Intel, and Nike.
* Education and Human Capital: Vietnam prioritized universal primary education, with high secondary enrollment and a skilled, youthful workforce.
* Stable Policy Environment: Consistent economic policies and long-term planning reassured investors and partners.
Vietnam also demonstrated resilience during global crises. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and disruptions in global trade, its economy bounced back swiftly, supported by a diversified industrial base and prudent macroeconomic management.
Sri Lanka
* Inconsistent Economic Policy: Shifts between socialist and market-oriented approaches have created uncertainty, deterring long-term investment.
* Over-Reliance on Imports and Debt: A failure to develop an export-driven economy left Sri Lanka vulnerable to trade imbalances. Heavy reliance on foreign debt led to a sovereign default in 2022.
* Weak FDI Performance: In 2023, Sri Lanka attracted just over US$1 billion in FDI—compared to Vietnam’s US$36 billion—largely due to governance issues and infrastructure deficits.
* Underdeveloped Industrial Sector: Despite the presence of Board of Investment (BOI) zones, industrial growth has been constrained by bureaucracy, poor logistics, and underinvestment.
* Macroeconomic Crisis: In 2022, Sri Lanka experienced its worst economic crisis in decades, with inflation exceeding 70%, fuel and food shortages, and a complete collapse of foreign reserves.
While Vietnam built strong buffers and diversified its economy, Sri Lanka remained overly dependent on volatile sectors like tourism and remittances, both of which collapsed during the pandemic.
1. Policy Stability and Vision
Vietnam’s consistent, long-term economic strategy—grounded in market liberalization—was key to investor confidence. Sri Lanka must establish a coherent economic vision that transcends political cycles.
2. Export and Industrial Policy
Vietnam transformed into a manufacturing powerhouse. Sri Lanka must shift from consumption-led growth to export-oriented development, particularly in high-value sectors.
3. Human Capital and Skills
Vietnam aligned education with industry demand. Sri Lanka needs to modernize its education system, emphasizing vocational training, STEM, and digital skills.
4. Governance and Decentralization
Vietnam empowered local governments to implement policies and attract investment. Sri Lanka could benefit from devolving economic decision-making to the provincial level.
5. Debt Discipline and Fiscal Reform
Vietnam avoided debt distress through disciplined fiscal management. Sri Lanka must commit to responsible borrowing, tax reform, and reducing wasteful expenditure.

Comparative Snapshot (2024)
Conclusion
Vietnam and Sri Lanka exemplify how different policy paths can shape national outcomes. Vietnam’s success story is built on pragmatism, stability, and openness to global markets. Sri Lanka’s setbacks stem from internal divisions, erratic policy, and fiscal indiscipline.
Yet, Sri Lanka’s future is not predetermined. With the right reforms—rooted in transparency, innovation, and economic inclusiveness—the country can regain lost momentum. Vietnam’s journey offers a powerful blueprint, but ultimately, Sri Lanka must chart its own course with clarity, courage, and commitment.

“Yet, Sri Lanka’s future is not predetermined. “
There is a valid reason for the failure of the country. Vietnam is a communist country unlike Sri Lanka which is a Buddhist country. it is not sure whether Buddhist was used by the politics or Buddhists used politics of the country. As long as it remains the same you cannot determine the future.

“Vietnam is a communist country”
Really?
Thank you for that news, but then what the hell is the US-Vietnam strategic partnership about?
/
leelagemalli / May 6, 2025
Vietnam’s political landscape in 2025 is characterized by a pragmatic and independent foreign policy, often referred to as “bamboo diplomacy.”
–
This approach emphasizes flexibility, resilience, and a commitment to national sovereignty, allowing Vietnam to navigate the complexities of global geopolitics without being entangled in the rivalries of larger powers.
.
Close Allies and Strategic Partnerships
Vietnam has cultivated a diverse network of international partnerships, balancing relations with both Western and regional powers.
Key allies and partners include:
–
China: Vietnam maintains a comprehensive strategic partnership with China, focusing on economic cooperation and regional stability .
–
United States: Despite recent tensions, including U.S. tariffs and aid cuts, Vietnam and the U.S. share a comprehensive strategic partnership, emphasizing trade, security, and regional cooperation .
/
leelagemalli / May 6, 2025
cont.
Japan: Vietnam and Japan upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2023, enhancing cooperation in trade, technology, and regional security .
–
France: In October 2024, Vietnam and France elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership, focusing on political cooperation, defense, trade, and sustainable development .
–
Australia: Vietnam and Australia upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in March 2024, emphasizing mutual respect for sovereignty and political systems .
–
Philippines: Vietnam and the Philippines share a close relationship, often referred to as a “communist military ally” partnership, with cooperation in defense, trade, and shared interests in the South China Sea .
–
Czech Republic: In January 2025, Vietnam and the Czech Republic upgraded their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, marking Vietnam as the first Southeast Asian country to achieve this status with the Czech Republic .

“Thank you for that news, but then what the hell is the US-Vietnam strategic partnership about?”
Is China a communist country? What the hell China’s trade with US? How much US-China trade is there? Bilateral trade was worth $582 billion in 2024
The Chinese diaspora in the United States is comprised of approximately 5.4 million.

/

May be. May not be. Who knows these days?
/
Mallaiyuran / May 7, 2025
At this time of the era, Vietnam is a crucial partner to America. It is understood by Washington DC. So, one of the very first delegates to meet President Trump was a Vietnamese group.
Vietnam exported $149B to America last year, while imported only $13B.One may expect that having made the Vietnamese reps facing problems, but it looks like they found some agreement left early. Canada is the largest but well-balanced partner for America. But, Ceylon and Vietnam are in similar situations.
Trade size Balance $
1 Canada 349.4 63.3
2 Mexico 334.0 171.8
3 China 143.5 295.4
4 Japan 79.7 68.5
5 Germany 75.6 84.8
While America is dependent on Vietnam mainly for consumer items, it is a silent, non-rabble-rousing partner. Unlike some farting zigzagging comedians writing illumination and distracting the readers, recently there were a lot of constructive talks about Vietnam in CT. Vietnam cannot be a partner to Ceylon on its endeavor to come out of the pits Siri Ma O, Bathiudeen, Old Rowdy, Evil, Hitler like curses pushed it in. But Vietnam is a classic example to Lankaweyan follow in order to escape from the UNP-SLFP Union’s trap. Vietnam, even going above Singapore, recently punished some senior corrupted ministers with capital punishment. So, the article fits well into the CT community’s view.

Hello Ajith,
My wife’s Passport says on the Front Cover “Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka”. Nothing about Buddhist there.
Vietnamese Passport says “Socialist Republic of Viet Nam”
Almost the same as the Sri Lankan.
My Pakistani friends had “Islamic Republic of Pakistan”.

LankaScot,
Maybe your wife can help you with this insolvency or frustration you are going through.
Once again, because you are ignorant of facts, you are treating history and languages equal with your convoluted pseudoscience. I wonder if Sadampi is going to call the readers once again to back you up in this too, to protect their survival.
As usual, you are casting the eye of blinds who checked and reported the elephant. The name “Sri Lanka “was inserted by Siri Ma O, when she proclaimed the country as Buddhist country and introduced section 9 to make that connotation effective. SJV rejected that constitution and rejected Name, so when it was translated to Tamil, he insisted on it to be read as Illankai. No Suffix Sri. And if the Sri part had been translated, it would have ended up as Thiru. Below is an example. That is not the case with English translation. Ceylon is no longer there. These are some of SJV’s preparations for Pattukottai convention.

Come on, was Ajith who wrote Section 9 of Langkang’s 1972 constitution? Ajith named the country as Sri? It is that you just don’t care about the facts and truth if you have to defend Sinhala Buddhist Barbaric politicians, is that not true? Metaphorically, it is you who brought the Florida Lab’s research and claimed that you couldn’t see anything of Buddhism in the name Langkang. Why are you twisting that, which is still in CT?
Siri Ma O defined the country as Buddhist. Siri Ma O designated it as Buddhist. Siri Ma O converted to Buddhist. Siri Ma O named it Buddhist. Yet Sirimavo could not find a true Buddhist man to enshrine her Buddhism’s holiness in her life. Siri Ma O was doing all possible destruction to Tamils with the right-hand helper of Bathiudeen until another Sinhala Buddhist Christian Angel called Junius Richard deprived her with her Civic right. Then it was Amir, Tamils’ Thanai Thalapathi, whom she saw as her arch enemy during the PM-Ship of 1970s, held her in his hand and took to her car. It was ASP Shanmugam and his Tamil police team who put their life in line to protect her from the JVP uprising in 1971, until Indian Sikhs came and took over her security. That is why many JVPyers are still angry with Tamils.

LankaScot,
Denying is not the way to take your talk. You show how AKD brought down 70–80 years of self-proclaimed magnificence, only by being ever prepared to reply to the accusation they had on JVP. But on the inverse side, only in the 2024 election, the ruling UNP_SLFP Union encountered opposition talking against the ruling party. But they were hiding in denial but lacked intelligence and conviction to reply to the accusation that was put in their court. So, the people had a revolution in the 2024 election. You can rest until your conviction wakes up to answer the chaos you created by commenting on things you’re no idea but just being pushed up by your comrade like those worthless souls. He called on readers, when you were stumbling on your pseudo-science, to back you up because you have to protect your team and keep going on CT. Thanks to Buddha, Allah, Siva, Jesus, Jehovah, because they have shown their presence to you. It looks like you’re at the edge of realizing reality……0001mm away! When you come back, be sure to be free from overconfidence and arrogance.

You and your comrade are abusers of this website. You two introduced filthy languages, so others had no escape route but to reply to your concerns in the right way. Furthermore, you specially tried to bring here unwanted messages aka neuroscience or neurology from some people like your ilk. I tried to bring that matter up two times with you, in both times I could not edit and finish them before CT removed those threads. But the habit will not go away. Good luck for you to write soon on my comments.

What the Sinhala Buddhist Army did was shoot the youths like stray dogs all along the roads, leaving the bodies to pollute the townships. Tamils’ gracefulness (other than a traitor Tamil) is even at their utter loss of hope; they show a smiley face even to their most vengeful enemy. If you were honest, in your answer to Ajith, you should have mentioned that “:I see it is inappropriate for that woman, who had no appropriate education had only Married Solomon, a pseudo-Christians, having had inserted the ‘Sri’ in the country’s name, which has 3000 years history of Hindu Tamils living in it, and it is holding the UN membership”!.
Thank you, I take your cookies with a cup of coffee, because you are offering it to me for wasting time with a person who, at this age, has no knowledge of the gasoline vehicle’s catalyst converter to minimize the poisonous gas they exhale. But he/she does neurosurgery with the info somebody else keeps passing for him/her. But you go ahead and one more time bite dust in this Sri Lanka name debate, as you do in all your debates. His detailed works on Vattukottai convention are not elaborated in Das Kapital. He had made, starting from the Section 29 of Soulbury constitution, and requirement set to it with the Tamil Misters attention, he made sure that the Tamil consent to Soulbury constitution became null and void. The constitutional constitution convened out of Soulbury constitution, so until the constitution of 1972 drafted and implemented Tamil did not participate in that process but stayed under the British Dominion shadow. When Sinhalese declared it will not bind them anymore. Tamils’ attestation validity stayed in the constitution, so he took with him and exited out of it on his own, but not with Sinhala Buddhists and their republic constitution. There is one more delinquency from the British government, that when Tamils stayed under Britain, when Sinhalese went republican, Britain should have taken stock of Tamils and provided a solution for them. Under section 9 Sinhalese didn’t have any authority to infuse any constitution they were not supporting. All the necessary legal frameworks were done by Thiruchelvam, Navaratnam, Ranganathan like eminent constitutional lawyers for Tamil to walk out their sovereignty intact, out of the Soulbury constitution. These may, appropriately, come to light when a genocide case is filed on Rowdy Royals’ genocide war.

“So this Vattukottai thing was 19th Century stuff!”
What do you mean by “Vattukotai thing”? Is it something you hide in your Amude? Sure, that is a stale object, created even before monkeys started jumping on trees.
Come on, why don’t you voluntarily die and take a new avatar, so you can be equal to human beings and live with them on the same terms, using modern languages, in a meaningful way? Modern languages are intended for Tamils and a couple of other civilized human communities only!
Tamils’ life in Island Ceylon is older than 3,000 years. Their Hindu Temples of Pancha Iswarms say that Rigid, undeniable truth. Anybody who has the capacity to understand any-one language will be able to get it. Not the clowns, when asked them to write a Thevara hymn, start to bluff, that “Sampanthar told Hindus to rape Jain women”. What is that behavior telling? Those paramilitary members remember only the Rapist Army’s lessons, taught with hot iron rods, but no school subjects, because at that time teachers didn’t use hot iron rods to tame wild animals.

“Lord of the Sacred Hill
Trincomalee, the coastal peninsula town where Koneswaram is located is an anglicized form of the old Tamil word “Thiru-kona-malai” (Tamil: திருக்கோணமலை), meaning “Lord of the Sacred Hill”, its earliest reference in this form found in the Tevaram of the 7th century by Sampanthar.” -Trincomalee – Wikipedia
When the 1958 pogrom was going on, a Tamil Brahmin, in Colombo, was selected and written Sinhala Siri on his back with molten -hot-tar, to demonstrate the holy aspect of the 1958 pogrom’s tortures. In the pogroms, political parties’ kingpins mark which Tamils’ houses should be looted and set fire. Later in the day, when the mobs start to parade with their destruction, they don’t have to search out for Tamils houses. Sinhala Siri was used for this Door’s making, indicating the pariah Demoulas need to clean to make the area’s holistic Buddhists. By now, the Buddhist’ Siri’ is not the same as Hindu Sri. Further, Tamils of India or Ceylon don’t use even the Hindu Sri. That is available, abundantly, only beyond Tamil Nadu. Sriperumbudur like names are practically not available in Ceylon. There is no Sri India or Thiru India or Al India, because the constitution makers of India insisted on India’s secularism, Not Hinduism or any other religious sponsorship. The Islamic states also stayed out of having names like Al Pakistan or Al Bangladesh.

In history, there is no “Sri” of international usage. The Ceylon came from Illankai, Lanka, words. There is no Sri Ceylon. So, when Siri Ma O named Sri Lanka, Tamils boycotted that occasion. When cars license Plate were issued with “Sinhala Siri” Tamils who in protest cut off the Sri from the plate and driving. The “Sri Rejection Sinhala Siri Movement” was on the ITAK’s popular Buddhism- Sinhalam resisting nonviolence movement. The word Lankan came from the simple word of “Lavankam”. Things like Holy Ash, Holy water, Holy Pottu, Holy Thread exist but there is no holiness attached to the Lavankam. Neither Tamil Hindus’ nor Sinhala Buddies respect that object as Sri Lavankam or never use it in any prayer. Further Lavankam is not a Sinhala Word, Kurunthu is the Sinhala word for Lavankam. So, the Lanka name has nothing to do with Sinhala. After the growth of Sinhala Buddhism, the country was re-named as Sri Lanka. Remember, Siri Ma is spelled Siri, but the country is spelled Sri. There is a short circuit present is obvious.

Ajith, this so-called Lanka Bott, like many others here, pretends to be an intellectual and defender of human rights, constantly coming here and hypocritically crying about the poor Palestinian people and their plight but are all hypocrites to the core, notice how they leap to defend fake history Sinhalese Buddhist Fascism against the island’s Tamils and keep quiet or even worse trivialize what happened to the island’s Tamils, the ethnic cleansing, war crimes and structural genocide committed on them, many even openly support this. In the case of this foreign Bott, he seems to be besotted with his pretty Kandyan Ayammah, so he constantly leaps to defend Sinhalese Buddhism. Hardly knows the actual history of the island or South Asian, but like a typical ex-colonial white, thinks he is all knowing and is better than everyone and starts making an idiot and a nuisance of himself. However, he has his supporters here, one is a venomous old spiteful self-hating anti-Tamil snake, which takes great pleasure in the misery of his people as he is miserable himself, so the rest of the Tamils also should be.

Hello Rohan25,
Show me where I have defended Buddhist Racism. I have no Religious beliefs. Quite a few of my Ancestors suffered at the hands of the English Redcoats in Scotland before and after the Massacres of Glencoe and Culloden. Why do you think there are so many Scots in Canada, the USA, New Zealand and Australia. The English (and some Scots) absentee Landlords replaced the People with Sheep (The Highland Clearances) in the 1800s. But, in the words of the song “These days are gone now”
I have met Sinhalese recently that are descended from Scottish and English Tea Planters from around the Gampola Plantations. Some of them have been part of the JVP Election Campaigns.
And finally I am well aware of the Atrocities carried out by Sinhalese Governments on the Tamil Population and the Discrimination against them both before and after 1948.

The NPP’s negotiation with America seems to be didn’t go anywhere. It may not be the NPP’s fault, but they must understand that Langkang have been cheating on America labelling it as” Neo Colonialist “, almost for the same number of years they cheated Tamils on secret solutions, Banda-Chelva Pact or Dudley-Chelva pact. So, America may take some time to study the new government for change…..for genuine change… for real and honest change. NPP can and should entertain all international entities equally. It doesn’t mean they should engage in unwanted Siri Ma O’s non alignment or Old Rowdy’s CHOGM show business. (Sometimes Sinhala Buddhist Intellectuals appear to be flashy, flamboyant, ostensible fellows.) Just to escape from the UNHRC, UNP-SLFP unions have been treating Western countries at arm’s length so there is no interlocked dovetail economic connection with any country for Lanka. Until the 1970s and Siri Ma O education destruction, the UK was directly recruited from Ceylon medical education. Not the variety of free trade, even that kind of professional recognition existing all over Western democracies. That is why it became possible to create an EU. But in our days, we saw only Hitler and the Evil government arranging the Rapist Army soldiers fertilizing the Israeli desert farm lands. What shameful lords and duchesses the Sinhala Buddhist intellectuals.
/
Mallaiyuran / May 7, 2025
China exported poop to Langkang; Russia returned the tea, exported, blaming rice bugs were in tea shipments. These are Lankaweyan’s trading partners. In the past, the action of Langkang employing Vietnam for Oil exploration was another ploy to blackmail India. Even on the recent visit of NPP leaders, not any fruitful trading agreements were signed with Vietnam. NPP failed to make much connection with Vietnam because Langkang’s trading aspects don’t have much with Vietnam. Vietnam is a consumable exporting country. So, it wants one who imports those items. Vietnam and China are dominant exporters of those items. Same case with China too, but China made a forceful connection into the Langkang trading only by China buying all the UNP-SLFP Union stalwarts with cups of coffees. Neither the West, nor Vietnam, is suitable for that kind of deal. Invoking the mantra of buying with the cup of coffee, Don Stephen, father of the nation, initiated the corruption in the land through politicians. When these corrupted leaders propagate these shameful words, Sinhala Buddhist intellectuals tend to feel they are smart, they are strong. But these little byes have eaten up the country’s wealth and bankrupted the country. That mantra so quickly caught all Sinhala Buddhist intellectual politicians like fore catching a gasoline-soaked cotton. Now the entire nation is engulfed in that coffee cup fire of Don Stephen.
/
Mallaiyuran / May 7, 2025
NPP should and can treat all international partners equally. Vietnam is a communist country. America is not yet happy trading with Vietnam. If America fails to make any deal with China, Vietnam’s dependency will shoot up. Langkang is on the cross road. So, this is a golden opportunity for NPP making reciprocal contracts with the West and exporting wonderful quality cheap things, so the loans can be paid back. If NPP makes reciprocal contracts with the West for capital goods, and brings the consumption products to self-sufficient, then the foreign employment remittances and tourism money can be used to free the people from the loan the UNP-SLFP Union borrowed to deposit in foreign banks. The NPP must negotiate with the West, unlike the UNP-SLFP union did, to save Old Rowdies from their many levels of crimes. Profits are the economic reward for taking risk and facing uncertainty with courage and intelligence.
/
Mallaiyuran / May 7, 2025
Now only the real Langkang fireworks are going to start. If the NPP survives that, in 2029, the NPP gets the government. That is certified. The show is going to be put up by official forces*Rapist Police, Army) and unofficial forces (Royal Rowdies’ pharmacy products salesman). Valaiththodam has asked to let him be the Concert Manager. But he has no clue what he is talking about. What is his answer for “what he was doing the past 10 or 15 years”? When Evil got the hand on the radar, he said, all were afraid (AKD, Valaiththodam……) to go forward and take the child through the rope bridge. Modaya Evil was in a dream world to sense that he never had a chance to get an EP seat. Whatever it is, it looks like the right arm of the UNP SLFP Union is severed. Now it has the left arm. i, e, the Royal Rowdies. When Protestors of 2022 were knocking at the door, Gothapayal was hiding in the lavatory and called to clean the mess which Royal Rowdies had created. The NPP did not go for that because it had 225 Royal and non Royal donkeys at the Diyawanna Lake as the parliament.
The best is yet to come!
