I don’t think any serious change has happened. After the murder of Amirthalingam by the LTTE, his family had become disillusioned with Tamil nationalist politics, and didn’t say anything about separation.
MR even used his familiarity with Amir when the latter was opposition leader to flatter Amir’s son, when the latter met him in Sri Lanka during a visit.
So Amir’s family, or those close to them, inviting a leftist constitutional lawyer for commemoration, is not a “seismic” change.

from the Amirthalingam family the time to forget the past and
move towards the future and reconciliation is here – despite the
diabolical rule of the army and the continued suffering of the Tamil people in the North.

Maybe so, but the thrust of my point is that Amir family may no longer be the flag-bearer of mainstream Tamil nationalism, even though this may have resulted from the assassination by the LTTE. That mantle has shifted to the TNA, which by virtue of being elected, holds certain authenticity. The leftover TULF no longer has any significant support, as evidenced by the election loss of Anandasangaree. So their family’s message, even if what you say was the intended one, is not going to get any traction.

Apparently Peter, Visu and Siva killed Amir in Colombo. This was when Mr Prabakaran had his Eelaam in the North.
Wonder what Amir was doing in Colombo?..
Will there be any friends and relatives of Peter, Vasu and Siva to tender an apology?.
I mean these people now, are all about reconciliation and HR protection of their brethren. Aren’t they.

At the 1977 general elections, Amir and his henchmen/women used the Tamil youth clamouring for a separate Tamil State and let them loose in a state of euphoria in order to win the elections. Once the elections were won with an overwhelming majority in the Tamil areas with the help of the youth it was too late to contain the disillusioned Tamil youth who expected a Tamil State and who had been taken for a ride. There was then the 1977 riots sponsored by JRJayewardene, the new President of the Sri Lankan State to subdue the Tamils. As expected the Tamil youth became militant and hence the genesis of the LTTE. It is no surprise that Amir was assassinated by the LTTE. Bensen

The TULF would have won the elections even without using those “clamoring” youths. Once the TC joined the FP and formed the TULF, there was no other party to offer a challenge. The UNP, SLFP and the leftists all had only a very small share of the votes and were in no way a threat to the electoral prospects of the TULF.
So I think your take on Amir is unfair. He and other leaders were pressured by militants to adopt a hard line, but as elected politicians they were bound to work within the existing system. Militant youths were oblivious of how the world, especially India, was–and still is– unsympathetic to all-out separation. The world will support federalism but it was and is wishful thinking to expect anything beyond it, regardless of any TULF rhetoric. The youths should have had the maturity to understand that despite any rhetoric, the TULF had to be pragmatic and ready to compromise.
