Evolution Of A Movement: From JVP To NPP: From Violent Offensive Against Police Stations To Being Embraced By Them!

By Vishwamithra

“Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.” ~ Voltaire

‘Even if we are killed, the cry we raised will never die!’ (Apa maraa damuwath, apa negu handa sadaa nomiyenu etha). That  is a slogan/quote from an April-’71 Insurrectionist, a JVP fighter, during the failed insurrection in April 1971. He was tortured by the police at the time. The Sirimavo Bandaranaike government with aid from neighboring India and other so-called non-aligned countries crushed the revolution. Hundreds of youth who took part in the uprising and tens of thousands who attended the ‘Five-class’ indoctrination sessions were taken in for rehabilitation. Rohana Wijeweera, his Politburo and other leading members of the Party were in prison, prosecuted and sent to jail; Wijeweera for life imprisonment. Wijeweera’s strategy was to attack all Police Stations scattered in the country on one day at a predesignated hour. The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna made its incursions into the body politic of Ceylon. And come 2024, its residue and its cream of that oppressed thought process is rising its voice and this time the country is not only listening, its apparently hearing it too!

In 1971, the JVP and its machinations were a way ahead of their time. The Sirimavo regime was inefficient, corrupt and lethargic alright, but the country was not yet bankrupt. There were long queues but those lines were ascribed to adoption of wrong economic policies and following dogmatic Marxian theories of governance. However, the cry of the youth was legitimate; it was even valid but had not reached the length and breadth of the land. Mainly confined to the university campuses, the leadership of the JVP movement yet was consisting of part-educated youth whose Utopian dreams were more delusional than approximate to being even semi-realistic.

Their path to power ran through the country’s police stations. At the time our police stations were hardly armed even to quell an attack by a local mob of unruly thugs. An errand theory backed by a halfhearted armed attack by youth whose training did not even go beyond how to salute a senior policeman did ultimately prove that it takes more than an ill-equipped band of university fanatics to topple a democratically elected government. They not only made a mess of their own cadres, they made lifelong enemies of the police, the country’s peacekeeping forces.

It is indeed a remarkable irony of history. That history is still being written; on political platforms; in numerous columns written in numerous news media and also in the hearts and minds of an unforgetting generation; unforgetting, yes, but is it unforgiving too? One would have to wait till the elections. The colorful story of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), its evolution from a cellish, cadre-based political entity in the late nineteen sixties and seventies to the early nineteen eighties and then being driven underground in the mid nineteen eighties and reemerging as a gruesome force of vengeance and climaxing in the ’87 to ’89 period’s political violence has indeed traversed a long way.

Its sailing of the ‘movement’ which was identified as the JVP has been subjected to critical evaluation; sometimes to ridicule as a dead, non-existent political force. Such a political organization, if it were only limited to a political party along traditional contours, its revival would not have been real. However, if its fundamentals were based on suffering and its endurance, such a human development could become a mass movement; if it becomes a cascade of ideas and ideals, its continuance cannot be  thwarted. Mass movements are not based on temporary uprisings, they are founded on continuing flow of human thought and its universal value and relevance to the existing context.

If ideas, however radical or outside the prevailing social context they be, take ahold of a sizable segment of the population, they assume a totally exotic dimension. That dimension is unmistakably palpable today. In an election field mostly populated by traditional players such as the incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe, late President R Premadasa’s son Sajith Premadasa and potentially a member of the Rajapaksa family, the appearance and the leading role being played by an old boy of Thambuththegama Central Vidyalaya located in the midst of the Mahaweli Program, a candidate whose father was a laborer in the Survey Department, whose education was totally local, from secondary school to University education, the story that is unfolding is remarkable. Its prologue and its current contexts are irrevocably entangled with the sufferance and its endurance by the current generations.

That mass movement which marched from a cellish, cadre-based political party has now graduated to an enviable mainstream political entity; not a traditional party, but a mainstream party. That party whose embryo-stage organization hurled bullets and other ammunition from outdated galkatas-type handguns at the country’s police stations has become the only political party which is being backed by senior servicemen who did serve at the time the JVP attacked the police stations.

Ravi Seneviratne and Shani Abeysekera, two retired senior servicemen, Seneviratne as senior DIJ and Abeysekera as Director of the the CID, appeared on the NPP platform the other day and Seneviratne laid out a story of deeds and misdeeds of the past governments led by the so-called mainstream parties. What lay underneath what Seneviratne told the gathering- a vast crowd of retired policemen and policewomen- is indeed making hair stand on end. A chilling description of government  deceit and highly irregular activities and the the failure of the current government to hold those who committed those human-rights violations to account for each and every single deed of violation is astounding.

No carpet is expansive enough to conceal the dust- magnitude of the atrocities allegedly committed by a villy nilly few of government officers and some leading politicians. Lasantha Wickrematunge, editor of the Sunday Leader was murdered in broad daylight, Prageet Ekneligoda disappeared and his wife is still searching for an answer, Keith Noyahr was the associate editor of The Nation newspaper . He often wrote critical analyses of Sri Lanka’s security situation in his column “Military Matters”. He was abducted by a white van and was severely beaten for hours before being released in May 2008. Then came the ‘Mother of all massacres’, Easter Sunday massacre. A carefully planned and plotted mayhem against our own countrymen. Ravi Seneviratne shed some light on them. A full-blown exposure will come in time, I hope.

This is the stuff, exposure of cruelties of the Rajapaksas and their henchmen, Sajith and the SJB cannot boast about. People’s trust in Sajith and the SJB seems to go thus far and no further. That precisely is Sajith’s demeanor in politics too. Time and time again Sajith has failed to deliver his men and women beyond the red line. He has repeatedly failed and that seems to be a refrain with which he could be defined, in a very realistic sense. He does not seem to have the support of men and women of the caliber of Ravi  Seneviratne and Shani Abeysekera. Both Seneviratne and Abeysekera may not be the be all and end all at the forthcoming elections. Both of them may be flawed; but their contributions in the service they chose has been exemplary and their commitment to that service has never been questioned. The irony alone is what astounds any unbiased person. From being the focus of attack at the receiving end to those who embrace the very attackers. That is the stark irony of the story.

Easter Sunday attack is yet an unsolved mystery. Its resolution would have to await the formation of an NPP-led government, if that is a potential reality. Those who swindled the country’s treasures and its precious resources would not be taken to task other than in an NPP administration. That is why the status quo would be more than ready and equipped to see that the NPP would not  win the elections. Yet, whatever the fears, anxieties and dilemmas the opposition has, Anura Kumara Dissanayake and his party cannot relax even one minute. Twenty first Century is only a number in the context of identifying a time span. Human greed, human hatred and the pure evil traits of the human being has been the same since the dawn of civilization; the tools and weaponry have been sharpened and made more dependable in human conflict or the assassination enterprise, but that basic motivational element has not changed.

Counter revolution is extremely possible; those who expect to lose power, if suspicious about their misdeeds and corrupt practices are waiting to be exposed, their last attempt to perpetuate them selves through a proxy is not going to be an impossibility. The Rajapaksa family and their immediate cohorts are a band of thieves whose very preservation as a family-junta is being threatened and their last-ditch attempt should be anticipated. In such an extreme circumstance, the NPP should be ready and equipped to handle such a situation. No way the Rajapaksas and Wickremesinghes are going to go away with their hands folded and head bowed down. This is where the experience and know-how of the likes of Ravi Seneviratne and Shani Abeysekera would come in handy.

Yeah! Let us have it all out in the open ……… and trash it all out here and now.

Who appointed Gonawala Sunil a JP? …… Gonawala Sunil, the notorious murderous gang-leader who kidnapped and brutally gang raped Prof A T Paul’s mentally-handicapped teenage daughter? Let us argue the morality and the collection of priceless Buddhist books that condone such acts? —- List of Sri Lankan mobsters — Wikipedia

Symbolic morality anyone? Symbolic Buddhism anyone?

Who was behind the Green Tigers …… that sadistically murdered Lankan youth …….. with the sate-apparatus at their disposal?

The state has killed more youth in all manner of sadistic ways unimaginable …….. that the JVP couldn’t even come close to.

Does the cloak of respectability the state/government wear ……… exonerate it from murder and sadism?

“Who was behind the Green Tigers …… that sadistically murdered Lankan youth …….. with the sate-apparatus at their disposal?”

Who appointed those diplomats who were behind massacres of innocent civilians from 1971 to 2009 including the period 1987 -1991, and sent to represent Sri Lanka and other capitals in Geneva, …. and promoted all those war criminals to top ranks, and still covering their bumps, .. and a sub inspector who was promoted to the post of ASP although he is not serving in the police department when he was promoted , ?

Chandika’s three commissions identified 30,000 crimes that were perpetrated by Armed forces, Police, Green Tigers, …… all other vigilantes and hoodlums between 1987 and 1991, … and no charges had been brought against them, why?
      https://www.usip.org/publications/1995/01/commissions-inquiry-sri-lanka

Because the deputy defence minister Anuruddha Ratwatte thought it would have adverse effect on the then ongoing war in the North, could have negative impact on the moral of the armed forces.

Something fundamentally wrong with the ghastly decision makers.

You should take over the management of the entire island.

I understand Tamils are seriously looking for a common presidential candidate for the forthcoming presidential elections. Since you are an ardent supporter, admirer of Thiruvengadam Velupillai Prabaharan Tamil National Alliance should nominate you as their candidate. What do you say to TNA?

Else TNA should offer Ranil the chance to contest the presidential election under its banner given that Ranil too is looking for a party to contest the elections.

          Native,

Of all people, you get me wrong ….. and you shouldn’t! …….. I’m not a supporter or admirer of any earthling. …… I’m just a simple unvarnished-truth teller: come what may. …….. I’ve this vision-thing, where I can discard all the associated claptrap and hone in on the distilled pure truth. …… That comes from years of looking at shares to invest in. ……. One can’t be emotional about shares ……. can lose big time.

I’ve just one soul mate ….. kindred spirit ………. Diogenes.

Read up on …… absolute-truth ……… objective-truth and subjective-truth. ………. all what we are wasting time on here …….. is countering people who mistake their subjective-truth and try to pass it on as the objective-truth.

Off to Finland, Estonia and Poland ……. can’t report on AKD for SM …….. can report on the war nearby ……. if Putin keeps his itchy fingers away from the buttons …….

NF: You forgot to mention the Architect and the Commander-in-Chief of the “Yellow Cats” – one Edirisinghe – one of the “Dignified” ex-police “High Brass” who held a Media Briefing with an ex-IGP Chandra Fernanad (his actual name Chandrasiri Fernando, according to Police records). This Edirisnghe had no qualification to be enlisted in the Police. But, he qualified because he was a “JVP Cadre” who had direct connections to JRJ through his father who was a staunch UNPer, who passed on the secretive operation that was to be launched to abduct Sirimavo Bandaranaike, in 1971. the then PM. He was enlisted into the police force and given training at the Police Training College and through political blessings he worked up the ladder and rose to be an ASP and DIG. In 1988/89 Edirisinghe was the “Operational Manager” of the famous “Tire Paiyars” that killed thousands of youths. He was “Rewarded” well.

That Gonavala Sunil is the other side of the coin that depicted this “Police Top Brass” – Edirisinghe. Do I have to tell the “Profile” of the other EIGHT – “Police Top Brass” who held a Media Briefing at the Shalika Hall? No. You and the people know it.

Sorry. I made the mistake of naming that Rtd. Police Officer who headed the “Yellow Cats” as “Edorisinghe”.

            Mahila ,

As down to earth folks , most of us do understand about our
men and women in the country . And we know well that
we have guys who are not interested in working , any kind of
work I mean , eating and drinking from other hard working
members of the family and even get married with thousands of
lies and spread out members count without employment , all
thanks to someone else’s sympathy or stupidity .. We are still
living with that kind of a crowd . It is a world secret that we are a
nation of Domestic Aids Supply with a chip of 2500 yr history on
their shoulders . Don’t you see everything else is a joke in such
a country . For them to learn Self Respect first of all , it will take
more than a century . I hope you do know about the saying that
goes ‘ beggars can not choose .’ I believe it is applicable to the
elections as well ! Whoever is the next choice , it is the Empty

The JVP in 1970’s was consisting wholey Sinhala rural youth who clamoured for change so that the Elite Sri Lankans are replaced by socialistic people. Had they united with disillusined Tamil Youth in North and East a change could have been acheived. Authors from the majority race still do not consider the Tamils live in SL!

Dear LM: Please note there is no Sinhala/Tamil/Muslim vocabulary and Religious sects in the campaign platform of NPP.

It is always of Sri Lankans but concerned with addressing cultural and religious differences that exist within the population at large.

Your “million dollar” question will be addressed and solved once NPP establishes a New Government and brings in a New Constitution to address the issues. AKD on behalf of the NPP said this very clearly during his visit to North recently. Did you listen to that announcement that was available on YouTube? Now don’t condemn YouTube.

          .

I am working hard to resurrect this country from those you always refer to as “BPs” of Madamulana now in the protective arms of Beastly vagabond – Ranil W and another waiting to protect all of them – that Sajith P.

I am happy that my time is well spent and devoted to that mission, unlike you have good for nothing time spent other than to accuse…..accuse and accuse the bastards who have made this country bankrupt and misery to people.

How come there is very little mention of the wanton destruction of the Jaffna Library, the atrocities of ’83, the slaughter of thousands of youths by government sanctioned death squads in the late ’80s, and the thousands of lives lost during the uprising in the North and the East? Our self- professed “social democrat” was very much a part of that administration.

I can only vaguely remember the 71 insurrection but I will never forget the fear I had as a small boy that I will never see my father, a school head master, alive, as he was stranded in a rural backdrop.
His life was saved because some of the JVPers in the area were his own pupils. However, I remember the late 80s insurrection very well & the kangaroo courts. The JVP, which still venerates its murderous leader, is now the darling of the people. AKD, as its leader, obviously, shares this ideology & the party still has it’s militant old guard. If AKD stepped down from JVP leadership, I would have more respect for him but in my thinking, the NPP socialist credentials & a bunch of 20 or more all sorts, from trade unionists & ‘academics’ to women’s ‘liberators’ & a bhikkhu front, doesn’t inspire confidence.

The SJB & UNP (the SLFP & PP are not worth mentioning) with its current leadership doesn’t inspire confidence either but the SJB under a new leadership is worth considering. Eliminating corruption & banging up criminals sound good but seeing it through is another matter. Any credible party can be pressured by the public & the media to do just that, just as the aragalaya got rid of GR. There are other priorities, apart from going after criminals, to consider.
I don’t know much about Ravi Seneviratne but Shani Abeysekera & many others were unjustly treated. However, my respect for Shani would be somewhat diminished if he were to canvass for the NPP on stage. He is a professional & despite his personal grievances, he can campaign for justice non politically.

        Raj-UK,
I am in total agreement. Especially, on Shani Abeysekera.

Thanks, it’s comforting to know that I am not alone in my thinking, even if it is only you. NPP supporters say the JVP have apologised for their past violence but the murderous leader is still venerated in their website which makes the apology hollow & that makes AKD, the current leader, also hollow in his statements. Does the militant old guard still able to pull strings within the party? Why carry baggage?

Most SL are unable think critically & readily take up the rhetoric. I can understand the SL diaspora inviting AKD but conducting his campaign from abroad seems extravagant use of party funds. Is it to persuade ex pats to convince their relatives in SL to vote for the NPP (how many would actually go to SL to vote or is there provisions to vote by post?) or personally persuade to remit their savings to boost the FOREX reserves once the NPP is in power? Or is it just to impress the voters in SL by the NPP international fan base?

I ‘don’t take statements at face value, instead, ‘I read between the lines’ after learning ‘critical thinking’ at Uni but it does not seem to be a subject in SL, therefore, many are happy with the rhetoric without considering how the objectives are to be achieved.

Raj-UK: “….campaign for justice non politically”. No. That’s not going to work in Sri Lanka. Good examples are Ravi S, Shani, and dozens of others who were REMOVED from all those investigations (Lasantha, Thjudeen, Eknaligoda, Podala Jayantha, 11 Students murdered, and many more) including the April 21st Sunday Attack. That Unjust Treatment, you mentioned were all politically motivated and it has to be resolved in a similar way. If not no justice will be served in Sri Lanka.

So it is a different Ball Game in a country of No Other.

A professional need not prostitute hime self politically for justice. Many have been treated unjustly but would they all have to get involved politically to get justice? NPP doesn’t need Shani on stage to make their point about upholding justice

            Dear Readers,
            .
Evolutionary or insidious nature of AKD:

Earlier he was against Indianisation, now he has changed it. They do not even admit that they stood against Indianization.

He and his barbarian forces had previously been communal and opposed the implementation of provincial councils, now he suddenly changed that and vowed before an audience in London and Jaffna that the provincial councils would continue.

A month ago or so, he again made it clear in a TV interview that he would pick up where Ranil left off with the steps taken by the IMF so far.
            :
My question is if everything is almost similar to what the current government is going for, why do people choose him?
            .
Who does they jvprs think that they have been fooling? Our people are unfortunately known as disastrous prone by analysts.

It will also be fair to remember the deeds of the government at the time.
      We forget some things easily.

I am merely stating my personal experience of the JVP as they doesn’t seem to have changed their ideology. Certainly, there were horrendous crimes committed & by the armed forces with the blessings of the govts. in power. We are appalled by Israeli bombing of Gaza but don’t talk about abuses in Jaffna & the kangaroo courts at the end of the war, even those convicted were forgiven, nor do we talk of the indiscriminate killing by govt. forces during the JVP uprising. Some criminals involved are still in high positions & its up to a decent govt. ensure justice prevails but in practice, it would be opening a can of worms. Nevertheless, many like Shani, Dr Safi, Lasantha, Thajudeen, Eknaligoda, etc etc, needs, at least, official acknowledgement & those responsible held accountable

The point I was making was about the JVP involvement as it is relevant to current issues.

      Raj,
Dozens of my peers were brutally murdered by the JVP during the 89-92 riots.
We knew that they were hacked to death by JVP and not Batalanda. We don’t need anyone to endorse it.
Every time I go back home, I meet their families each year. I see some mothers standing in front of me without saying a word. I read it as their silent sadness at not having sons of my age. They lived their life very miserable as they lost their beloved sons.
      .
The affected families are still reeling from their shock.

Douglas knows this well because he comes from a place (south srilanka) where JVP has killed many innocent youths. However, his behavior today is similar to that of a marijuana user. He or the like seems to have no heart for the victims of the barbarians. How can people be so inhumane? Sinhala – Genetics?
I see another “catastrophe” in making. It will be a real big one.
We are very worried at the moment. If the present government had not taken the risk, this country would have become a “Somalia”. However, our people suddenly forget everything. Also they are easily manipulative. Nor do they learn it from their previous experiences.

We are all aware of the JVP destruction & violence in the past when innocent people were murdered for not obeying their unlawful commands. I am unaware if the JVP has apologised to the public but if they have, it is hollow because the same murderous leader is still venerated in their website & the ideology has not changed. AKD being its leader, obviously, subscribes to that but is he wearing a different hat as the leader of the NPP? Even the academics & intellectuals don’t seem to see the JVP bogeyman in the NPP background.

AKD is above the average lout that are the majority of our politicians, & no doubt, a sincere person but his leadership of the JVP with it’s old militant membership, is questionable. In the absence of another credible leader, I would vote for him & sincerely hope that he will keep his promise by abolishing all perks of politicians & bring the corrupt to justice but I am not holding my breath.

I would like to make it clear what stand Tamils and Muslim People in the North East should take in this presidential election. The Tamil Politicians and Muslim Politicians could make their own decision to support Ranil or Sajith or Anura depend on their personal benefits such as ministerial posts, licence to arrack business or to abduct luxury items using the special relationship with executive power or to bribe, they were part and partial of the ruling regimes when both communities were targeted by these regimes. They bribed few Muslims to carry out the Easter Bombing which is similar to kill two policeman in the East and put the blames on Muslim and Tamil community.
We all know that Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalism is very strong in power none of the candidates are prepared to challenge the wrongs of the Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalism which took the country into bankruptcy. Even now they are not prepared to challenge. Whether they are afraid to challenge the wrongs of the Buddhist Fundamentalism or whether they play games using it for their benefits.
As a community what benefits you need from them?

It is interesting that we always forget about Hindu fundamentalism, born of Tamil political bankruptcy, that is creeping into the Tamil community, although Islamic fundamentalism is reminded of occasionally.

What alternative you expect from a Sinhala Fundamentalist Tamil advisor that finally resulted not only political bankruptcy but also economic bankruptcy of this island?
