Speaking to the media after meeting the Malawatu-Asigiri Mahanayake Thero’s in Kandy today Rajapaksa said that he does not believe Sirisena will abolish the Executive Presidential system.
The ex-President said that while some amendments will be made to the Executive Presidency it will not be abolished totally. Rajapaksa said that he believed the President will retain most powers.
Meanwhile Rajapksa stated that he was still undecided about whether he will support the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) at the next Local Government (LG) elections.
“How can I support the SLFP when some front line leaders are saying that Rajapaksa should retire and my services are no longer needed” he added.
When Journalists queried whether he would lead the joint opposition and will contest as a separate party, Rajapaksa replied “I have not decided on such a role as yet”
Sirisena last week announced that he will abolish the executive presidential system. A subsequent proposal by him to do away with the system was approved by the cabinet of ministers.
