Foreign Minister Professor Peiris At The G20 Interfaith Forum In Bologna, Italy

By C.V. Wigneswaran

C. V. Wigneswaran

Professor GL Peiris’s statement on ethnic or religious political parties need comment. He said in Bologna that ethnic or religious political parties in a Country do great damage. He referred to Muslims and Tamils in Sri Lanka saying they reached the pinnacle of political power and authority as members of (so called) National Political Parties. He said “So there is no need for them to detach themselves from the national polity, to segregate, to compartmentalize the national polity by the formation and the emergence of political groupings that seem sectarian?”

Firstly to deal with Tamils in so called National Political Parties. Have they been able to obtain reliefs to the Tamils suffering under the yoke of Sinhala hegemony?

The Tamils face political, social, economic ills and cultural degradation due to Sinhala hegemony in their areas specially in the post war period. What have the so-called Tamils who reached the zenith of political power in Sri Lanka been able to do to the Tamils of the North and East? Is it not a fact only those Tamils and Muslims and other minority groups  who accept Sinhala hegemony and overlord ship who are able to come up among the so called National Political Parties?

The Military continues much to the detriment and safety of the Tamils in the North and East in several Camps. Have these Tamils been able to even decrease the numbers among the Military. In fact their numbers have increased after the Presidential election. The President himself got his votes on the basis that he is a Sinhala Buddhist despite his so called National Political Party. When the Sinhalese leaders themselves are using their ethnic and religious background to obtain votes for themselves why is Professor Peiris talking about damage to the Country from ethnic and religious political Parties? Is he including his Party too into this category?

Lands are being expropriated from the Tamil homelands by the Military and by Government Departments and by individuals including BUDDHIST priests. Are the so called National Parties taking up the matters? The Indo Sri Lankan Accord of 1987 identified the Northern and Eastern Provinces as the traditional homelands of the Tamils. The Sri Lankan Government was a signatory to the Accord.

Tamil speaking Officers selected to higher appointments in Government Service have been asked not to report for work while Sinhalese Officers have already been asked to take up the said appointments and work.

A Sinhalese Parliamentarian goes into Anuradhapura Prison in the night and harasses Tamil Political prisoners. What effective steps have been taken against him so far?

Harassment of the Tamils by the ethnically and religiously different people are taking place. Professor Peiris complains that our people must not think sectarian. If so who will take up the matters concerning the safety, dignity and equality of  the Tamils, Muslims and other minority Groups in Sri Lanka? Will the Sinhala Buddhist accept the truth about their past? Will they accept that the Tamils and the Veddhas are the indigenous communities of this Island: that the Sinhala language came into existence only in the 6th or 7th century AD; that those who received Buddhism into the Island were Tamil Saivites; that there had been several influx of Tamils at different times from 3000 years ago and that the Tamil speaking are the majority among those who live in the North and East even today despite several attempts by the successive Sinhala majority Governments to change the demography of the North and East?

Professor must first try to shed the Sinhala Buddhist hue of those who are in his Government before talking about those who at the receiving end of discrimination, harassment and incarceration by his Sinhala Buddhist ethnic and religious Group.

Minority Sectarianism was in response to Majority Sectarianism. Minority parties did not come into being spontaneously but were a reaction to Sinhala hegemony, which has now transformed into Sinhala Buddhist hegemony. Professor G.L. Pieris wants all the Tamils and Muslims to lay down their arms (figuratively) and surrender to the Sinhala Buddhist hardliners and live happily forever as second class citizens. This man is and has always been a joker! Who will take him seriously?

“He said in Bologna that ethnic or religious political parties in a Country do great damage.”
I think he is right that ethnic or religious political parties in a Country do great damage. Every one knows the two major so called national political parties UNP(SJB) and SLFP (SLPP) may not hold ethnic term in its name but both political parties are ethnic (Sinhala) and religious(Buddhism) parties in operation. Ceylon National Congress was the first political party formed in Sri Lanka by Sir Pon Arunachalam in 1919. Later UNP was formed and UNP become a Sinhala political party which lead to Tamil political parties. In 1950s UNP divided into two and SLFP formed which became a Buddhist Sinhala party. The damage to the country is the ethnic and religious policies of UNP and SLFP.
I am sure professor GL Peries understands the truth about who damaged the country? Unfortunately, Prof. G.L Peries is a very good opportunistic and he will speak for any one who gives ministerial post and financial benefits. He is now joined with criminals and talk for them.

Prof G.L Pieris advocacy to have only national political parties and not to have ethnic or regional political parties is not realistic as rightly pointed by CV.Wigneswaran.

This may be valid only among majority community because the so called national political parties represent the interests of majority ethnic and majority religious upward mobility at the expense of minorities.

Unless the country is homogeneous, not only ethnically, or religiously, it is not democratically possible to do away such political parties, calling them sectarian..

Diversity could only be celebrated only by having separate political parties to look after the interests of such diverse groups.

GL Peiris is a disgrace to the academic community that consisted of decent, well educated and mature people who did not succumb to the temptations of cheap political appointments through backdoor deals. Accordingly, his credibility has been destroyed through the years of his sycophantic history. I do not think the writer should quote this man or analyse his comments as they are purely bluff in an attempt to fool the international community.

      Lasantha Pethiyagoda,
It is people like GL Peiris who make education seem worthless.
      .
Those educated Sinhalese who keep mum are no better.

      Lp,
May be he has sort of mutation s not allowing him what others feel about him. This is common to ones in like minded countries. That is one of the reasons we remain poor developing nations foreever. No body but late singer Sunil Perera lauded it as no others ☹☹☹☹☹☹☹☹

I agree, Lasantha. No excuse for the way he’s been behaving for the past fifteen years or more.
      .
He may always have been a little out of touch with the grass-roots, but there was no doubt about his intelligence from his school days on.

GL Peiris is a total disgrace to academia, to his alma mater and to humanity.

He is as crooked as they come, and is in fact worse that scum like Wimal Weerabangsa (yes that piece of excreta has Malay roots), because his credentials would suggest that he can be trusted, but he has proven beyond doubt that he is infected with the same strain of rabies as Gota, Mahinda, and the others within their cabal.

Who cares this joker GL. If some one says kiyapang and he will say. If some one says dance and he will dance. He is the worst SL clown I have seen. Utterly shameful creature. I just wonder why he still lives, such a life, is it really worthwhile? SL academia, shame on you Lanka

BL, If a real joker, is it not obvious that a buddhist who has no faith has gone to speak at an interfaith conference. What faith is he professing and trying so hard to support. Real joke.

Oh no, this maha clown GL went there carrying bags full of dollars and the fool was carrying without knowing what he was carrying. The luggage was handed over to him at Colombo air port only. Had they got caught then it would have been GL clown. He was told the luggage contained umbalakade to Italian PM? From Bologne to San Marino, it was Moda Blind, going with KINK as a porter. Mama knows too well how to play the game. While all these happening in Italy, Paradise was playing its own cheap stunts to fool the 6.9 million clowns led by Logan, Gnanasara, and arrakku Taverns to divert the Italian Job, and the show was produced and directed by the unqualified FINANCED minister from the US. King is ageing and transfer had taken place to Baby in San Marino.

So the elder 2 Babies have been left “High and Dry”.
So very soon the Rockets and Sputniks will be taking off as the money is in the ‘Kitty’ of the young sibling!
Or did they go to check the country to see how it is governed? Suggest improvements and/or provide Human Resources!
That’s their past time. Is it not?
