The defendant was not present in court at the time and defense counsel informed court that his client had been admitted to the Sri Jayewardenapura Hospital.

The determination was on a case filed by the Attorney General against Gnanasara following a petition submitted to the Appeals Court by the Former Homagama Magistrate and current Colombo Chief Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake.

Earlier Gnanasara was sentenced to 6 months of rigorous imprisonment on June 14 for threatening Sandya Ekneligoda, the wife of missing journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda within the Homagama court premises.

Former Homagama Magistrate and present Colombo Chief Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake, Deputy Solicitor General Dileep Peiris and prison officers filed statements against Gnanasara Thero.

HE must serve the full sentence and should not be pardoned by anyone including President, the reason is that law and order must prevail in the country if we are to develop it and set an example to others . They have acted like thugs under the cover of an yellow robe which is an insult to Buddhist Philosophy

Being “sentenced” and “serving punishment” are two different things in the governance and legal system of this country which, in many ways, is a virtual theocratic state in essence. If it matters at all to those interested in watching the passing scene in this so called ” democratic” Resplendent Isle, the world shares
a different view of today’s Sri Lanka – her political reality, legal system and the
Constitution – consistent with the Lincolnian phraseology.
