Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Galagoda Atte Gnanasara today withdrew the Fundamental Rights petition he had filed at the Supreme Court early this month which sought the court’s intervention to prevent his arrest.

Gnanasara’s lawyers had said that there was no need for the petition anymore as they had already received the necessary outcome yesterday, and hence the petition was withdrawn. Gnanasara was released on bail Wednesday despite serious charges against him, including obstructing police from exercising duties, and also for making hate speeches and insulting the Quran.
In November, the Secretary of the Sri Lanka Thawheed Jamath group Abdul Razick who was arrested by the police on charges of insulting Buddhism was ordered to be remanded by the Colombo Additional Magistrate, however yesterday when Gnanasara’s case came up, despite having even more serious charges than Razick, the same court, the Colombo Additional Magistrates Court ordered for Gnanasara’s bail, which has raised many questions pertaining to the independence of Sri Lanka’s judiciary.
In recent months, Gnanasara has been seen openly insulting the Quran, and in November he even threatened to launch a bloodbath in the Muslim predominant area of Maligawatte. In another incident in 2014, Gnanasara forcefully entered a press conference organised by Muslims and Buddhists and obstructed the police from exercising their duties, while last month in Kurunegala, he was seen openly defying the police when they tried to arrest him. However, despite the severity of the charges, the Colombo Additional Magistrate released the firebrand monk on bail.
Yesterday, Gnanasara’s arrest and subsequent granting of bail has been seen as ‘stage managed’ as no sooner he was arrested by the Police Organised Crimes Division (POCD), within less than an hour he was released on bail.
Both the government and the police have been accused of soft peddling action against Gnanasara and his BBS. Last year Gnanasara took responsibility for the 2014 Aluthgama riots against the Muslims, but no action has been taken against him.
Gnanasara shot into limelight in 2012, and has been leading gangs running riot across the country since then. Even during the previous government under ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa, Gnanasara’s group enjoyed impunity, with Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the defense secretary at the time, openly supporting events organized by the BBS. However despite a change in government in 2015, the impunity appears to continue for Gnanasara, and he has received a further boost following the support of Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe and Champika Ranawaka, who are two senior ministers in the present coalition government.
Since April this year, Gnanasara has renewed his hate campaign against the Muslim community in the country, and over two dozen Muslim owned businesses including mosques have come under attack. (By Munza Mushtaq)

Discourage Muslim staying outside the country from sending any money to Sri Lanka other than for family expenses. That too you can send it through a source other than banks. Which will keep the foreign exchange out of reach.

Fellows like Gnasara are a disgrace. He brings disrepute and destruction to the people and the country. His conduct and utterances are no where closer to Buddhist teachings. We learnt costly lessons for nearly 30 years by continuously trampling the Tamil community. Is he and the those who are supporting him want to send this country through anarchy which would be much more worst than the Tamil/Sinhala conflict? The problem is that these extremist are like the frogs in a well. They do not know what is happening around the world and what new values and movements are needed to peacefully take this country forward in the contemporary world. They are Sinhala chauvinists. This chauvinism is mixed up with outer periphery of Buddhism which does not understand the real philosophic essence of Buddhism where there is no room for hatrasey and supremacy over others. Shashi Weerawansa had applied for a National Identity Card (NIC) in 2010 as a person applying for a NIC for the first time.
Herath giving evidence in court said Weerawansa had submitted her application for an NIC at the age of 39 as a person who never obtained one. Herath was giving evidence in connection with two cases filed against Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa at the Magistrate’s Court Colombo yesterday.
The CID had filed two charge sheets against Shashi Weerawansa that she had fraudulently obtained two passports including a diplomatic passport by submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
Assistant Commissioner Indika Kumara Herath whose evidence was led by Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris told court that his department had not initiated any inquiry against Shashi Weerawansa for not obtaining a NIC even until the age of 39 which is declared as a punishable offence under the Act.
The witness had earlier informed Chief Magistrate Lal Ranasinghe Bandara that an article published on Ravaya newspaper had revealed the accused had possessed two identity cards under two different numbers indicating that she was born in 1967 and 1971.
The case was fixed for further trial on July 31. The witness is to be cross-examined on next trial date.On a previous occasion, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) filed a charge sheet against Shashi Weerawansa under two counts.
Shashi Weerawansa was arrested on February, 2015 over the charge of obtaining diplomatic and general passports illegally. She had allegedly submitted birth certificate with forged names and dates of birth to obtain those passports. She is currently out on bail.

At last, the courts have reflected public opinion. Singling out Rev Gnanissara while Viswalingams, Sivajilingams, Azad Sallys and Emil vander Poortens of this world are allowed to insult Buddhist culture, civilisation, religion and monks with total impunity is scandalous. These minority rabble trouser fifth columnists need to be taken to task before any Buddhist is arrested for reacting to the provocation. Things have to now come to a head.

A man who is charged of contempt of Court, Evades Summons and goes into Hiding for days, Surrenders to Court suddenly and is granted Bail immediately! He is arrested again on a Warrant but granted Bail once again!! All this happens within a few hours on the same day!!!
Can this happen in any other case in Sri Lanka unless of course it is in a Drama? In this case it is Real but a Drama alright hatched behind the scenes by the high and mighty in the so called yahapalanaya. Shame on yahapalanaya. Shame on the Judiciary

There is a need for a mechanism by which monks like Gnanasara can be disrobed and chased out of the Sangha – such mechanisms exist in other Buddhist countries.
This will purify the Sangha so that only those who obey the rules laid down by the Lord Buddha, especially “poverty” and “celibacy” can become monks.
Olden day monks were pious men who obeyed these rules and were venerated by the laity including Hindus. I have seen villagers prostrating themselves in front of Buddhist monks in the deep south on village roads, to obtain their blessings.
They visited homes for alms.

Let me make one thing clear and many people are speaking about’ hate crime’ without really knowing what it means. I am not a lawyer and am speaking from my ‘common sense’!
In my own personal view, there is nothing really called ‘hate crime’ when it limited to speech. Those who are somewhat fluent in English would have at least come across the idiom ‘ nothing hurts more than the truth’. Telling the truth is certainly not a crime even it hurts a lot of people.
I will not dare to put in the local version but if a Jew go public saying “I hate Germans and they killed my entire family (during Hitlers rule)” cannot be called hate crime. It might hurt lot of people but that was the truth. That is certainly freedom of speech.
So I will boldly what that man in robes called Gnanasara said is not ‘hate crime’. He has a right to tell what he wants. He can lies still it cannot be ‘hate crime’. If so many politicians tell damn lies in election campaign with plenty of mudslinging and personal attacks and all of them should be arrested and should be now in jail, and that includes the President Sirisena and former President Rajapakse.
It is only their actions that make them guilty. It is only because that bugger Gnanasara took actions to destroy Muslim places of worship and instigated destruction of the livelihood and property he becomes guilty and he has committed serious crime. He certainly has to be punished. He cannot take the law into his own hands.

If he feels Muslims had caused harm to the Buddhist or to the Sinhalese he should have complained to the police and taken action. Then police can verify whether they are fiction or rumours or the truth and if so take action. But without resorting to these proper channels he destroys Muslim shops and places of worship. It is very obvious he simply accused the Muslims without any truth just to give cover for his dastardly acts. To accuse Muslims are rapidly reproducing is not a crime. Life does not end by only reproducing their kids have to be cared for and that is a big responsibility. If so let the country pass a law limiting the size of the family! I could easily see there is pure jealousy as Muslims are skillful businessmen.
But instead taking the correct and decent approach for any doubts and suspicions he may have of the Muslims and inform the proper authorities he went on a rampage causing serious harm and agony to the Muslims.
The entire country is now totally exposed the way he was tackled. Minorities have lost all hope. The Government came to power with the promise to put an end to racial hatred and punish anyone guilty of it without fear or favour.. Now it has totally acted respecting fear and favour. We saw how the judges too stage managed and was a drama that was acted in courts for public consumption. judge blaming it on the police and police too not demanding the arrest of this bugger, these judges think we citizens are fools and we cannot smell a rat. Shame on judiciary and police!

The way the senior monks behaved in supporting this crook in robes placed the entire Sinhala Buddhists to shame. Many writings of decent Sinhalese express the same. Cat when drinks milk closes its eyes thinking no one can notice him just because he cannot see. Do not forget the entire world is watching.
The Asgiriya Chapter’s statement is deceptive. There are no hidden hands in this and it is just this BBS and the criminal Gnansara who created all this. They are now trying to white wash and place blame on someone else. I certainly will not like to have and worship a God like them. I will not want to worship criminals! Bloody shame.
If we do not nip in the bud and looking at short term advantages we are certainly creating a long term disaster which then cannot be rectified and we slip down further in the slippery slope. We should learn lessons from our past mistakes when we fell for the long term thinking of short term advantages such as in Education and now education is now in a irrevocable mess.
The only way of recovering is to hand back Sri Lanka for ‘colonial rule’ for at least one hundred years and we have a new generation trained by our colonial masters, otherwise our country is doomed.
Let me warn do not test the patience of Muslims and think silence is weakness. There is always a calm before the storm and it will be far too late if things turn bad to the other side and the world will not have any sympathy and would tell you asked for it and you got it,, so you bloody well have it!
