How Evil Just Happened

By Sarath de Alwis

Sarath de Alwis

Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil  ~ Thomas Mann

The Batalanda Commission Report is a catalogue of corrosive evil induced and encouraged by a monstrously  powerful Cabinet Mister. The report has urged the then President Chandrika Kumaratunga “to consider inviting Representatives of the People (such as Members of Parliament) to discuss these matters in detail, and propose a set of guidelines, applicable to politicians and Law Enforcements Officers, in their conduct during extraordinary situations, where there is a serious threat to peace and public order.”

Collusive Cronies

President Chandrika Kumaratunga did nothing. It is her shallowness more than Ranil’s evil that made me think of Hannah Arendt’s memorable phrase- Banality of Evil.  As Thomas Mann said it tolerance of evil is a crime.

For a quarter century the Commission Report gathered dust. A narcistic collusion between two manor born elite cronies Ranil Wickremesinghe and Chandrika Kumaratunga put a lid on it.

We have learnt to live with evil in public life since the dark days after the referendum that extended the term of parliament that was elected in 1977.

Ranil Wickramesinghe, first elected to parliament in 1977, was molded by this system.  Dr. Colvin R de Silva has described this process as an institutionalized “system that practiced systematic terror to which there seem to be no bounds. The regime terrorized political opponents into permanent submission.” (‘Sri Lanka’s New Capitalism and the Erosion of Democracy 1977 -88’ by Dr.Colvin R de Silva. )

Reading the report, I realized why Hanah Arendt the German philosopher and political theorist was baffled by the sheer ordinariness of the Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichman who sat in the dock in Jerusalem.

She covered the Eichman trial for the New Yorker magazine. She found that Evil cannot be traced to any particularity of wickedness, pathology or ideological conviction in the perpetrator. The only personal distinction of the evil doer was “extraordinary shallowness.”

Aggregate of half century in politics

The phrase “extraordinary shallowness’ that Arendt used is remarkably applicable to sum up the aggregate of Ranil Wickremesinghe’s half century in politics.

Where does evil come from? Are evil acts always committed by evil people? Whose responsibility is it to identify and stamp out evil? If you need answers to these questions, I suggest you read the Batalanda Commission Report.

How it resurfaced

Ranil Wickremesinghe was determined to remain relevant. He decided to carve a niche for himself as South Asia’s preeminent pundit on ‘Geostrategic’ prognosticating in today’s world which some call the Asian century.

He made several trips to New Delhi and the Middle East. Then he decided to go to London for an encounter with Mehdi Hassan – head-to-head on Al Jazeera.

Some say that Nirj Deva nudged him to go for it.

Mehdi Hasan is a broadcaster and author, a former host on MSNBC and US columnist for the prestigious ‘Guardian ‘and editor-in-chief of Zeteo – a new media organization which according to its website , seeks to answer questions that really matter, while always striving for the truth.

Our Geo Strategic Pundit Ranil Wickremesinghe is a man of great accomplishments.

It is only natural that he should go head-to-head with Mehidi Hassan the author of New York Times bestseller “Win Every Argument: The Art of Debating, Persuading, and Public Speaking”.

Mehdi Hassan asked Ranil about Batalanda.

Ranil W ‘s reply was predictably distinctive of the man.

Where is the report? There is no report. Therefore, there is nothing to answer.

Remember?  He tried this infantile ploy not so long ago in our parliament.   Dismissive of opposition outcry for elections to local bodies Ranil Wickremesinghe pronounced “The election has not been postponed. There is no election to be postponed”.

In London Mehdi Hassan won the argument. There indeed is a report published as a sessional paper No.1 – 2000 printed on the orders of the government, printed at the Department of Government Printing Sri Lanka.

I do not know when the Report was presented to the then President Chandrika Kumaratunga. But for some inexplicable reason the Report was published as a sessional paper in the year 2000.

Now, the debate on Batalanda has resurfaced. Ranil Wickremesinghe will need to try hard to win this argument.

Collusive Evil

It is a serious document which for some bizarre reason the then President Chandrika Kumaratunga decided to withhold, snuff out and buried.

Émile Zola’s famous dictum on truth comes to mind.   “If you shut up truth and bury it under the ground, it will but grow and gather to itself such explosive power that the day it bursts through it will blow up everything in its way.”

The report on page 22 explains how the Commission accomplished its warrant.

“The proceedings were recorded on audio tape, and simultaneously taken down in shorthand, and subsequently prepared into typed proceedings. These proceedings run into 6780 pages, contained in 28 volumes. They are submitted herewith, along with the marked documents and statements of all the people recorded by the investigators.”

The 175-page report makes an eye-opening narrative of state-sponsored terror and the icy megalomania of Ranil Wickremesinghe who pulled the strings of that terror puppetry.

Ranil is evil. The Batalanda Commission report makes it abundantly, persuasively clear to every discerning mind that makes the effort to read through its 175 pages.

Reading it, I was overcome with a sense of relief. I felt redeemed, unburdened. On 17th May 2022 when GR made Ranil Prime Minister I wrote in the Colombo Telegraph on Ranil & Political Evil.  (https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/ranil-political-evil/)

What baffles the ordinary mind is not so much Ranil’s evil but Chandrika Kumaratunga’s evil. Her skullduggery in pigeonholing the Batalanda report.

Can one do evil without being evil?

Can one do evil without being evil? It is the puzzle that political theorist and philosopher Hannah Arendt grappled with when she reported for The New Yorker in 1961 on the war crimes trial of Adolph Eichmann.

Hannah Arendt found that Eichmann in the dock in the Israeli court was an efficient administrator and manager who was ‘neither perverted nor sadistic’, but ‘terrifyingly normal’. He acted without any motive other than to diligently advance his own career in the Nazi bureaucracy.

Instead, he performed evil deeds with a kind of thoughtfulness due to a peculiar disengagement from the reality of his evil acts.

He ‘never realised what he was doing’ due to an ‘inability… to think from the standpoint of somebody else’.

Efficient Go Getter

Can Ranil Wickremesinghe, the efficient clever man with a supposedly global repute, think from the standpoint of somebody else?

The viciously efficient crackdown he ordered on protestors occupying the presidential secretariat in the early hours of the day after parliament voted him in as interim president is clear evidence that he could never think from the standpoint of anyone but himself.

Well-read Ranil W knew of the famous adage of H L Menken. He believed that Menken was right. Just as Menken, Ranil believed that Democracy is the worship of Jackals by Jackasses. On the last count he had 134 of them!

An Epilogue to Collusive Evil

Chandrika Kumaratunga by not acting on the recommendations of the Batalanda commission report has conclusively demonstrated that she in the pursuit of her own agenda could choose not to think from the standpoint of 4,709,205 people making up 62.28% of valid votes to make her President in 1994.

In 2005 Ranil Wickremesinghe went head-to-head with Mahinda Rajapaksa for the Presidency. On the eve of that election Anura Bandaranayake told a close buddy “By this time tomorrow Ranil will be president, and I will be foreign minister!

Best -laid plans of mice and men often go awry!

Sarath de Alwis, the time frame is a matter of who had to live with those. For us, Tamils, the manor born elite started it long before 1977.

In one sentence, Ranil saved economy by not making it, any worse. That he did, not because of his love for country or people, but with the hope of clinging to power. Many may disagree, few may be offended, but it’s just my honest opinion. Regardless of party, all our political leaders have blood in their hands.( uncle / nephew, Bandas, Premas, MS and Rajapaksas). CBK protected both Ranil and Mahinda and they in turn, returned favor.

          Chiv,
I have put this question before, but no satisfactory answer:
It is a fact that the rupee has lost half its value . For a while it was pushing 400 to the USD.
Now it’s down to 300, and prices of goods have come down from their highs.
In the meantime, various government employees, including doctors, got salary hikes. The self-employed such as coconut pluckers, barbers, gardeners etc doubled and tripled their rates. But there is no sign of the barbers etc cutting their rates. Furthermore, if by some miracle the USD comes down to 180, will the government employees take a commensurate pay cut?
I think that won’t happen, and therefore no leader in his senses will bring the USD to 180.

We need to know if the exchange rate of this island is determined by our international trade (import and export) function. then of course we need to know whether the prices are determined by cost push inflation or demand pulled inflation. Then the efficiency of production, firms, the bureaucracy, extend of mechanisation, ……. and corruption, uncertainty, …. . interconnected global economy, globalisation of inflation, ……

In Sri Lanka every economic indicator can be made favourable to this country only if ………………… As long as stupid and thieves run the country you will not get anything right in this island.

First we will have to prevent stupids and thieves hiding behind Sinhala/Buddhism, Tamil Nationalism ,……. some people behind Maoism, Narxism, ….

              Native,
Actually the exchange rate has very little to do with the living standards of citizens.
The Japanese Yen is now worth 2 LKR, and an Indian Rupee is 3.50 LKR
Nobody would argue that Indians live better than Japanese.
Then, 1 USD =USD 16.350,00000 IDR (Indonesian Rupiah)
              And 1 USD = 300 LKR
But Indonesians live better than us.
The trick is to keep people happy, but not TOO happy.

        chiv,

“In one sentence, Ranil saved economy by not making it, any worse. “

True. But there are some unexamined myths floated around ……… along with it,

He was handed a bankrupt country …….. that didn’t have to spend, in excess of 95% of its income, on servicing loans. The bankruptcy gave him the money that would’ve otherwise gone to service loans.

Others would’ve taken on the task ……. but wanted a clean sheet to start with. Except for him, no one else was willing to work under the Rajapakses.

The Aragalaya was totally peaceful, that was its salient hallmark. The violence was carried out by Mahinda’s thugs on the 9th of May …….. which everyone witnessed. All the houses were burnt that night. If Mahinda’s goons didn’t attack, nothing would’ve happened. Even that, Ranil used, to rob public funds, to reward/compensate/bribe his supporters in the parliament.

He brought some stability to the economy …… but did nothing more than kick the can down the road ……. for someone else to clean up the mess …… when he has exited the scene.

His expertise is in taking loans to kick the can down the road: that’s what he has ever done.

If there is an opposing view I’d like to know.

Ranil has the best nose in Lanka ……. to sniff out the best crooks …… and get them to work for him.

I don’t know where he sniffed out Arjun Mahendren to run the CB. Even after Sirisena kicked Mahendran out and installed Ajith Kumarasamy ……. Ranil walked into the meeting with Mahendran and tried to stop it. To his credit Srisena didn’t give in.

Nmal , I fully agree . I believe writing on these same lines , at the peak of Lanka’s presidential search with no takers
Lanka was saved by IMF. No country was willing to lend a penny to bankrupt Lanka.
Ranil’s contribution was to get Rajapaksas acolytes, to agree to IMF plan by promising ministerial jobs and and do nothing .
So that bankrptcy doesn’t get any worse.

        Maybe, maybe not.

Nirmala Seetharaman and S Jaishanker were instrumental in stabilising this island. You would remember Hindians provided much needed loans and went all the way to IMF got Sri Lanka temporary respite, then of course through their Export Credit Guarantee schemes allowed Sri Lanka to purchase oil, food medicine, etc……

It is not that Hindians (Delhi Sultanate) have become generous or benevolent it was in their own interest to save Sri Lanka, and prevent another failed state in its neighbourhood although Sri Lankies have been pain in their neck (or a***) for years.

As long as Racism visibly or invisibly is in the hearts of the rulers
and their promoters , this country will not move forward . If you
look at it this way , from Kerosene to digitalisation , from loin cloth
to Denim and Polo or coat and tie , this country is using more dollars
than Rupees for everything . Whether they understand it or not , the
outside world that deal with them easily understand where they are
marching to . Like Trump is changing US trade tariffs with its trade
partners , one day , sooner than later , Mideast is going to follow US
on foreign labour dependence . Steps are already underway with
reforms on women freedom of movements . Imagine the consequence
to countries like ours which depend on their money for everything .
Tamils , Muslims and Christians played key roles in our economy and
culture . This was interrupted with the promotion of Racism by the
elements of majority politics and religion . The world reads it with
caution and that is why the song ” Unity” of all communities is being
sung by all hues of politics but deep inside they can not do it to the
      satisfaction of the affected .

Well said. There are so many instances of atrocities committed by Sinhala buddhist politicians from the time of independence to which the same analysis could be applied. The larger question is how, like in the case of the Germans who kept quiet during the holocaust and the Israelis who kept quiet during Gaza, the absence of protest of the Sinhala buddhist people prior to the civil war can be explained. If they had kept to their Buddhist faith and protested at the killings of the Tamils instead of silent complicity, the civil war would not have taken place. This analysis of evil should be applied to several instances in our political life including the bombings of the Catholic churches.

    Let us not forget that:
    (1) Ranil and Anura were school-mates if not class mates and the families knew each other
    (2) Both CBK and RSW are politicians and therefore necessarily must be opportunists.
Politicians come to power overthrowing an existing regime based on a theme highlighting the weaknesses of the previous one, invariably building up hatred, jealousy and others. The much published “crimes against humanity” was good material for CBK to gain power. If CBK did not appoint a Commission she would have been branded as a traitor. Therefore, the Batalanda Commission and Report. Those hanging around the Presidents office at that time say that whenever RSW met CBK she would have a copy of the report on her table visible to RSW with the intention of subduing him. In other words CBK is supposed to have used this report to weaken Ranil, and if so again an act of opportunism. Thalgodapitiya Commission report was used to disenfranchise some politicians. What can be done out of the report tabled in Parliament is for the big-wigs of the Government. Will the current AG advise that nothing can be done out of this against Ranil?

I could not believe myself about Ranil being a devout Buddhist. He was so good with everyone at the University. It is politics that compelled him to involve in terror. His closest associate was a criminal from Kelaniya by the name Gonawala Sunil. This criminal was the Mentor and the De Facto Minister of Education. That is how Ranil W started his political life. Douglas,
Whether one is a Buddhist or not is a matter of personal interpretation., unlike say Christianity, in which one needs to be baptised to become a Christian. Similarly, Muslims and Jews have ceremonies involving losing a part of one’s anatomy.
Hitler was a Christian. Somarama and Buddharakkitta were even more devout Buddhists than Ranil.

Even Christians lost that part of the anatomy fir some time until a formal decision was made not to insist on it for converts.
Some denominations, like the Coptic Church, maintain a tradition of circumcision as a rite of passage, while others celebrate the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ.
Christians had cheated on that practice I would say.

Some children , like Dudley , Anura , Mahinda , Sajith and Namal
were raised for politics . They knew they were going to be politicians .
In school they turned pages just for that . They were undoubtedly
celebrities at schools that made it easier to reach the top with grades .
We are a country of slave minded , boot licking culture which goes a
long way with able bodies . But one thing is clear , a good man is
always a good man and he will try hard to stick to being good all time
no matter the circumstances . A man living in luxury at Colombo 7
once tried to buy me with commission for a favour from my business .
I said to him only one thing . ” Keep it with yourself , pay only for the
agreed price at the time of delivery of goods . ” That was my answer .
On another crucial moment , I met a buyer from UK at Pegasus in Hendla.
I not only negotiated my side of business , I did appear for my workers
telling the buyer ” under no circumstance my staff will work overtime

nothing will distract you . No millions can buy you .

“…like Dudley , Anura , Mahinda , Sajith and Namal were raised for politics . They knew they were going to be politicians .”
DS wanted Dudley to succeed him. Poor lad did not know what was ahead of him.
I doubt if either parent wanted Anura to be in politics. The two daughters were more politically informed, but not quite followers of the mother. Chandrika was a rebel as early as the 1970s. Anura got sucked into politics in the mid 1970s but Mrs B did not promote him the way his cousin did to use him against the SLFP left.
I doubt if Premadasa had time to train Sajith, who entered politics after the father died.
Namal perhaps was groomed for succession, but there was nothing left to succeed.

Both Anura and Sajith went to Royal and U K , not to come back
and work as Teachers or at Central Bank . Banda was an
Oxfordian and so was Anura . Premadasa surely wanted like every
other parent , to see his only son qualified and readied for the
country’s next man one day . We don’t have to be in their kitchens
to calculate how our future leaderships are still planned . Up until
now , no party leader was ready to form his next leader outside his
own blood . That is how U N P was destroyed by Ranil . If not one’s
blood then at least they were cautious not to let anyone out of their
caste . This is my calculation based on history , culture and a
pattern so far we are following , even to date . It is this culture that
was defeated by N P P at all costs . Did the losers go home after the
defeat ? Is it not enough evidence how hard they want it ?

I concur as he was a contemporary of mine, but from Royal. He has been a pompous, arrogant, ass from those days. Actually, Anura was a affable gentleman in comparison. His elitism and arrogance changed even his sexual orientation. A result
of that was his hunger for power over other, brute power at that, which is demonstrated by his sadomasochisms. He was ruthless akin to a black widow. He apparently enjoyed what he did at Batalanda. Power! Those insights are not in the commission report, as gentlemen sat around the commission table. A Freudian psychologist is required to assess his character.

          Hello SJ,
All the people that I have known to be Gay have all said the same thing. That they realised at a fairly young age, that they were not attracted to the opposite sex. They are also not a homogeneous group. One of my Nephews (he is Gay) has a disdain for Effeminate Gays.

            Very true.
Sexuality is not uniform among “straight” people either. Desire for multiple partners is an important deviation with variants. Attitudes to oral and anal sex vary.
So why should gays be cast in the same mould?
We need to be humble enough to accept that different forms of sexuality are part of nature and part consequences of the complexities imposed by the institution of marriage.

A key witness to the Batalanda Torture House is the much-spoken-of police officer Douglas Peiris. This officer was the “In-Charge” person of the whole of Batalanda camp. If an inquiry is to be held, the officer who was arrested while entering Sri Lanka after a long hiding is none other than SSP Douglas Peries. After he was produced before the Magistrate of Gampaha, he made a “SWORN AFFIDAVIT” outlining the history of what happened and of all who were responsible for torture and murders. The document is available in the court’s archives. Please listen to the link:

All the Police Officers named in this affidavit are still among the living.

“Sarath de Alwis, the time frame is a matter of who had to live with those. For us, Tamils, the manor born elite started it long before 1977.”

It is still not clear why the Sinhalese writers or Sinhalese media or Sinhalese politicians including NPP or Sinhalese people did not bother about what happened to Tamils of Sri Lanka by the same Evils? In their view, Judiciary only for Buddhist Sinhala?

“Judiciary only for Buddhist Sinhala?” The Judiciary is rotten to the core. The hands of the Minister and his officials are tied behind their backs. The culprits are very active even to this age. The Minister and the Ministry is behaving as though they cannot see .or say or do. The victims are helpless as ever.

        Mr HP,
As always, you’re absolutely right. I think there’s a new trend of feeding people with “big lies.” The AKD himself once coined a great saying: “THAKKADIYAGE – THE LAST ROPE IS THE TEMPLE.” I think our BANDARAWELA JOKER (Sinhala_Man) and others who advocated NPP (No Proper Plan) should prepare to commit suicide.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkSl0zONUEo&t=2394s

What happened to the “real system change” that was loudly proclaimed during the pre-election campaign? I think the AKD should put on “AMUDAYA—a loincloth” sooner rather than later.

Even though I and others constantly disagreed with the AKD, I still thought the NPP would lead the new government. At the very least, they would introduce new reforms to the long-awaited issues in justice system.
Unfortunately, the minister appointed a PINGONA-type man as Minister of Justice. He, Harshana Nananyakara (Grand son of VASIDEWA who created the mess in the brother-duo’s govt by preventing them going to IMF earlier) too, is unable to address the pressing and crucial issues facing the justice system, which are currently far lagging behind.

Unfortunately, the government has been in office for almost six months, and there’s still nothing close to the promised real change. And there’s no sign of it coming soon. That’s a shame!

          Lee.malli,
Do you really/sincerely believe that NPP should/could have done what was promised during the elections in 2024 in 5-6 months. If yes, you are living in a dream world of your own. Most of the mass media in SL, including westernized yourself are waiting for the failure of NPP govt. Good luck to all of you, they will be here at least for next couple years. Please give them at least 2-3 yrs and then talk about the promises they made, whether they have at least delivered 40% of it.

            Velu,
thank you but I don’t live in Sri Lanka. I haven’t lived there for the past 35 years.

Yet, for the past 35 years, I’ve returned home more often than many others. Therefore, I understand the serious problems in this part of the world. Yet everything I predicted about every leader has come true.

My predictions were better than a fortune teller’s bets. So let me tell you: The AKD leadership will ruin this country because, despite its best efforts, it lacks the necessary resources.

If we expect a mother to be treated in intensive care by inexperienced doctors and surgeons whose experience I know, I can be sure she will die, and all our hopes will be dashed. Likewise, this country, teetering on the brink of the abyss, will sink even further under the most inexperienced AKD leadership in the world today. We can talk about this in three years. Thank you.

To look at what went on at Batalanda “torture chambers” in isolation and characterize those behind them as “evil” is too simplistic, I think.

The Batalanda chambers were a product of the extraordinary circumstances of that time and a response to the evil that preceded them and perpetrated by the JVP. We now have the luxury of sitting in a comfortable home and pontificating and condemning the various actors of Batalanda but such tactics helped to crush the violent insurrection and bring it to an end as soon as it did and we all, including this author, are beneficiaries of that.

If those who ran the Batalanda chambers derived sadistic pleasure from what they did or took advantage of the situation in the country to take revenge from those not connected to the insurrection, then that WOULD be evil.

              Leela,

I am not going to waste time or energy on stupid people. I did not lose any argument, in fact, I won all of them. If someone is mentally retarded and lacks basic education, there is nothing you can do. CT did not make a filter, so I made my own. That is the optimal solution. I know you also have some mental condition, but I did not ignore you, since you are a uni grad.

“The man whose whole life is spent in performing a few simple operations, of which the effects are perhaps always the same, or very nearly the same, has no occasion to exert his understanding or to exercise his invention in finding out expedients for removing difficulties which never occur. He naturally loses, therefore, the habit of such exertion, and generally becomes as stupid and ignorant as it is possible for a human creature to become. ”

My point was I couldn’t either participate in such acts or condone/ignore them. I also don’t think that you could.
I have known people that have committed isolated acts like these and also people that have committed these acts in the Service of their Country (and for Money as Mercenaries). It takes a special kind of person to do these sort of things. I don’t use the term “Evil” in the Biblical Sense, but yes what they did in Batalanda was Evil, Inhuman and Criminal.

“My point was I couldn’t either participate in such acts or condone/ignore them. I also don’t think that you could.”

You couldn’t participate because you don’t consider those acts to be morally justifiable or because you don’t have the stomach for it or, as is more probable, both?

With regard to the latter, you probably eat beef and pork but I’ll bet you don’t have the stomach for slaughtering even a chicken. You’d rather let others do the “dirty work” for you.

With regard to the moral justification, if you don’t believe in an Ultimate Law Giver, then there are no absolutes and every thing becomes open and subjective. Torture has been used by human societies from time immemorial to extract information from criminals and if this is what was done at Batalanda–and not torture for its own sake–then who I am to judge if such acts of torture resulted in the insurrection being brought to a speedier end and the saving of the lives many more who would otherwise have been the victims of the insurrectionists?

During the second insurrection of the JVP, we saw a body of a naked youth lying on his stomach on the beach down the road from our house with a bullet shot in his head. This was a common sight at the time and done by Government death squads to instill fear in the minds of potential recruits to the terrorist movement and deter them from joining. At that time I was too young to hold a moral position on that but now that I am older, wiser and more experienced the only issue I have is the possibility that this youth may actually have been innocent.

              Hello Leonard,
You evaded the question. “I couldn’t do it, could you?”
Torture and extra-Judicial Killings are Crimes. Your mealy-mouthed questions of who are you to decide/judge are an evasion of their Criminality.
Did we not learn the Lessons brought out by the Nuremberg Trials
You probably know more about the people that committed these Crimes in Sri Lanka than I do, however I have known personally quite a number that have carried out these type of acts. Some of them were tormented by what they had done, but others were convinced that they were right, even after admitting that they were War Crimes. It is called Impunity.

“You evaded the question, ‘I couldn’t do it, could you?'”

I have sufficiently explained what led to Batalanda and the “justification” for it. That is all that matters and what I or you would have done is irrelevant. You wouldn’t have done it because of your airy-fairy values and I wouldn’t have done it at least because of my religious convictions, which you don’t share.

Let me ask you this question in return. Suppose you had a beloved daughter who had been kidnapped and hidden by a rapist, serial murderer, who somehow was captured by the police. If the best chance of getting him to reveal the place of captivity lay in subjecting him to torture, would you object to the authorities doing it? Assume that the authorities are willing to do it to get your daughter released. Assume also that if she was not freed from captivity fast she would most likely be further raped by a fellow rapist and murdered.

The Nuremberg trials are a different kettle of fish from Batalanda. Please see my comment below pointing out the invalidity of the comparison between Adolph Eichmann and the Batalanda actors.

                  Hello Leonard,
Torture doesn’t work, apart from that there are laws against it. I’ve heard of begging the question (petitio principii) but your scenario is ridiculous. You begin by assuming that Torture works
The Nuremberg Trials, International Military Tribunal, (IMT) investigated all Nazi Crimes, not just the deliberate extermination of the Jews, “The IMT defined crimes against humanity as “murder, extermination, enslavement, deportation…or persecutions on political, racial, or religious grounds”.
I never mentioned Eichmann once, he wasn’t tried at Nuremberg, he was tried in Israel (1961).
My morality is not based on “airy-fairy values”, however your morality based on “religious convictions” is. All Religious books were written and composed by Humans. Apart from that, have you never heard the Christian expression “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you“, based on the Sermon on the Mount? Or should that only be applied selectively?
The extra Judicial killings etc, at Batalanda and many more places, are still taking place. What was Tennakoon’s group up to and who appointed him? Sri Lanka has a big Human Rights problem. Until it is addressed the Sisyphean boulder will keep rolling down the mountain.

“Torture doesn’t work, apart from that there are laws against it.”

Except in rare situations involving people with strong ideological and religious convictions–a historical example is found in 2 Maccabees 7–torture does work. You should ask the police– and the Batalanda interrogators in particular–and they would confirm it. Is there any point in continuing a discussion with people who are ignorant of or deny–perhaps insincerely?–commonly known facts?

I would then rephrase my question, if you were persuaded that torture would work in my hypothetical example, what would be your position?

You: “My morality is not based on “airy-fairy values….”

A believer in a materialistic origin of the universe and every thing in it cannot speak of morality. Evolution knows no good and evil, and Richard Dawkins has admitted that his sense of morality does not come from evolution. Of course, you know better.

You: [H]ave you never heard the Christian expression “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you“….

Well, the Batalanda torturers did follow that precept, didn’t they? and you are blind to see that.

                      Hello Leonard,
How do you know what was in the minds of the Batalanda Torturers, were you one of them?
You seem to have an insight into the results of Torture and a Knowledge of who these people are – ” You should ask the police– and the Batalanda interrogators in particular–and they would confirm it”.
I hope you do the Christian thing and report these people to the relevant Authorities for Investigation. You still don’t seem to accept that Torture and Extra-Judicial killings are Crimes.
As for morals, yes I have morals.

                    Scot,

                    “Torture doesn’t work”

It works unless someone is specifically trained to withstand it. That does not necessarily justify the use of torture. The ethical aspects are a different matter.

‘you probably eat beef and pork but I’ll bet you don’t have the stomach for slaughtering even a chicken. You’d rather let others do the “dirty work” for you’
This is a common false argument. A bank robber might steal cash and jewellery that ends up in various shops. If I buy such jewellery, that may make me many things, but it doesn’t make me a bank robber.

Not if you buy them unaware they were stolen but if you buy with knowledge of their source then you too become an accessory. This is common sense

Sorry, that comment got posted accidentally before it was completed.
If you believe that killing an animal for food is a “sin” then eating meat from animals slaughtered by others also makes you a sinner because they are slaughtered just so that people like you will eat them. If no one ate animal flesh, then there would be zero animals slaughtered for food.
You are deluding yourself if you think otherwise.
Any way, my original point was about LS not having the stomach to slaughter the animals he ate not about the morality of it.

                    Hello Leonard,
I was on a Diving Support Vessel in the Arabian Gulf, when one of the Divers handed me a Speargun and asked me to get the Diving Gear on and help him catch some Fish. What I didn’t know was that the Divers had been supplementing our Food Supplies due to the poor quality of the Saudi Supplier. As the Diver said “I know you said , if your not going to eat it don’t kill it”
So I got my Diving Gear on and between us we shot about a dozen medium sized Hamour (Groupers). So yes I do have the Stomach for it. I took my turn with the Divers for the duration of our Offshore Trip. I have also trapped, killed, gutted and cooked Rabbits
I can also defend myself pretty well when necessary. I have no trouble decking someone that attacks me physically.
                    Best regards

                Svenson,

Leonard’s point seems to be that someone has to deal with terrorists, as they are an imminent danger to society. Unfortunately, more often than not, conventional methods do not work here. Terrorists operate on a different frequency. Did you know the Easter bombings were part of a much larger chain of attacks? Luckily the security forces are well-trained in this kind of thing and prevented further carnage. If not for Ranil, they may have prevented all of the attacks.

        LS,
I rather think that this quote from Kishali Pinto Jayawardena’s Sunday Times article says it all:
“Rather, the JVP could have emerged as pure as the driven snow as it did this week, tabling the Batalanda Report in blinking wide-eyed innocence of multiple brutalities on its part, including killing children of public servants and forbidding funeral rites of victims. In the final reckoning, neither the Sri Lankan State nor the terror groups that it defeated can, like Pontius Pilate, wash their hands of blood.”
1989-90 was a brutal time . No one party can claim to be the only victim, nor can any party be branded as the only villain. I am sure the author himself would have experienced the situation, and I find it unseemly of him to jump on the Batalanda bandwagon. A lapse of memory, to be charitable?

        LankaScot ,

I am now sure how inside and possibly outside sources Counted
On Ranil’s ability to cope with ‘ Aragalaya ‘ situation . A man with
Batalanda type of experience was needed to protect the inside and
outside Interests . Ranil was a better choice than Army for them .
And now , instead of Ranil , A K D is a better choice to do the same
thing from Ranil’s place . From my point , whatever A K D claims he
is , he is a Racist too . Absence of a Muslim in his cabinet is Racism
in my view . You got a hidden agenda behind it but unfortunately

“To look at what went on at Batalanda “torture chambers” in isolation and characterize those behind them as “evil” is too simplistic, I think.”

I agree however it is not those who perpetrated these act of terror were/are evil, the people are very stupid who know/knew very well terror was used since 1971 yet they voted for state sponsored terrorists, who created more terrorists.

      Ultimately, unfortunately …..

Batalanda was not the only torture/terror camp, there were many, …. those who ran such camps were sent abroad as diplomats, emissaries, ….. Those who suffered are still in Sri Lanka, continue to suffer from various illnesses.

“The Batalanda chambers were a product of the extraordinary circumstances of that time and a response to the evil that preceded them and perpetrated by the JVP.”

Exactly. The JVP were anarchists who were ready to kill anyone that stood in their way. No government in the world would tolerate such a group. They had to be thoroughly vanquished, come hell or highwater. Because they often attacked army garrisons and police stations, they were well-equipped. So the government had to resort to extraordinary measures to stop them. The LTTE grew in a similar manner, although their smuggling networks were global. Had the government imposed a naval blockade early on, a faster resolution could have been reached.

The obvious message from the people who flak the current government day-in, day-out in CT is nothing else but sheer rubbish! While bashing Rajapaksha gang for the current status of the country, they profoundly worship that most failed political crook in SL – Ranil! These blind worshipers conveniently forget however, that he has had an obvious consensus with the Rajapaksha gang, the very reason why he became the President at that chaotic time over SF or Sajith. These commenters pull the curtain on the fact that RW eventually entered the SLPP kingdom and agreed to work with those despicably corrupt MPs and Ministers who were notoriously class one rogues nurtured by the Rajapaksha gang to do any dirty thing on earth to retain power. For the past five months the current government has done everything best to bring back a civil regime free of corruption that was denied to Sri Lankans for the past fifty years! But sad people like that elephant sized Chamara – the cesspit from Badulla is always finding silly jokes to undermine anything this government is trying to do for the betterment of the country. So disgusting!!

Jit: I appreciate what you say. It is heartening to see how the Government has not allowed the tactical and dirty culture of politics to raise its head. That is commendable. However, some of the Ministers who are given responsible portfolios are not measuring up or living up to the expected standards.

For example, watch the COPE inquiries that are going on these days. For how many years and under how many Chairmen have we seen these dramas? All the rogues go scot free. Why? No Government has given the COPE the teeth necessary to bite – the Legislative and Rules and regulations to impose punishments. Did you hear in one of the meetings, the Auditor General said: ” What is the use of all these inquiries if action is not taken against the culprits. I find, I am useless. It is better to resign and go away”.

Why can’t the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Finance observe what happens in these meetings and introduce one simple Legislation to empower COPE to proceed with punitive actions against the culprits? Both have failed in this matter. It is BUSINESS as USUAL.

Douglas, I do not disagree on this. However, as common to any new regime, these people have done blunders too. My point is, organized political corruption is the main reason why we are down to this low level and NPP MPs have not indulged in any corruption so far. That is the biggest point to start with and give a hand to this govt to bring back the economy and society to a decent level. They are only 5 months old and we should give them time to implement many legislatures including what you said about COPE. Have no doubt, if nothing had been done by next election time and if this lot too becomes a business as usual model, then I would be one of the first to bash them!

          Jit,
“NPP MPs have not indulged in any corruption so far.”
Maybe not outright corruption so far, but opposing legislation that’s against their personal interest, which is a form of corruption.
For example, there was a circular by the PM as Education Minister to ban private tuition by government teachers. It was shot down by the Labour Minister, who is aso leader of the JVP teachers union and a tuition master.
          https://www.thecolombopost.org/2024/12/western-tuition-ban-removed-without-the-knowledge-of-the-education-minister/
Furthermore, I doubt that the government will touch powerful groups like lawyers and doctors to regulate their charges. The police go after decorated buses, but still ignore conductors who don’t issue tickets.

Good question. That’s why the Singaporeans can’t figure out what crime Arjuna Mahendran has committed. 🤣🤣Sirisena sent them 20,000 (!) pages of “evidence “.
But, seriously, I think you Brits are to be blamed. Back in the day, our English-educated lawyers would craft impeccable judgements, garnished with Latin to make things even clearer. Nowadays I doubt that the lawyers understand English, let alone Latin.

Guess, you’re not fully familiar with our “LOW and ODOR “.
Here is an example, if Bernie Madoff was a Lankan citizen, he would have been sentenced to
” 5 years of SUSPENDED Rigorous Imprisonment and a fine not exceeding
One Million LKR” for the financial crimes he committed. He still will be alive, actively involved in financial markets and considered
“Lankan Warren Buffet “. ( who knows , may be even appointed as R.B. Chairman, Financial advisor to the President, a still better choice compared to Cabral , Mahendran and Basil )
That is what exactly happened in case of a VVIP couple who swindled Billions of LKR, in Ponzi investments and financial / pension fund management.
Doesn’t “Suspended rigorous imprisonment” sound like “justified torture camp”.

OC, first and foremost, you know that there are no angels in politics! Every politician has their own weaknesses because all are human. If we start nitpicking every wrong move of any government then there is no hope for the country and its people. What is pragmatic is to understand who has done the least damage. I dont have to tell you what Rajapaksha gang done to this country, do I? There is a mental threshold one can develop in order to start protesting any regime if they get corrupted. I haven’t reached to that point re- the current lot yet. That is what guides me to see any hope for the country, if there is one at all. I do not have any political idols or favorites. As I said I will be one of the first to flak NPP if I reach that corruption threshold anytime. If this lot fails, then I certainly do not believe Ranil can make SL a better place free of corruption because he purely exists on the mercy of Rajapaksha goons. I dont believe Peratugamis can do it either. So I keep hopes on the best lot out of the worst multitude. As simple as that!

Ranil was given a free ride by JR his uncle in 1977. Those days with English speaking JR, Lalith Ronnie, Gamini etc around Ranil was very much a insignificant politician there only because of nepotism.

During the JVP insurrection many politicians became involved in counter terrorism and crimes. Ranil appears to have been an enthusiastic executioner of counter terrorism. There was no talk of the all knowing intellectual then.

They all had died and Ranil became UNP leader after Wijetunga/Gamini. In his cunning mind Ranil realized he needed a justification for his underserved leadership mantle. He saw that only mediocrities, who were more comfortable in Sinhala, were around him in the UNP then.

So reinvented himself- reader of books, intellectual , very fluent in English, darling of Western leaders, knew everything about economics, history, diplomacy ,IMF etc.

Not only was he a philosopher, he was very sophisticated, drank the best wines, danced awkwardly at the big match, sang songs ( he knew the history of the song !) and even wore denim trousers.

The mediocrities and the crooks around him thought here is a miracle, visionary ,and great doer !

The people rejected him. The UNP came down to zero seats. That did not stop him from jumping into the Presidents chair with Rajapkse support. The people kicked him out again in 2024.

Ranil could not resist the First class air ticket and stay in a posh London hotel that Aljazeera offered him ( and wife) !

That is how cheap he is !

Otherwise would he have jumped to become President of a country which had rejected him totally ? And that too with Rajapaksa sponsorship, a man who according to Vijaya group was the very opposite of the values Ranil Hamu represented !

This explains his arrogance , it is a cover to hide his cheapness !

Being a Hindu, I like the Karma explanation. Waiting to see what happens to Mahinda and Gothabaya. I like the Catholic saying: The mills of God grin slow, but they grind exceedingly small”. We can see the slow grind taking place. The mighty are falling. It is a good lesson for the JVP as well. When they begin to fail, (I so hope they do not and they keep their vision in place) we do not know what things they will do.

Can you please explain how Karma filled and killed more than 12000 babies in Palestine within a short period of time? What did the babies learn from Karmic actions of pain and death, remember they are only babies?

What Moists, Marxists, SriMaoists, Leninists, Stalinists, Pol Potists, ……. have to say about the premature death of babies. Religious nutters can refrain from fooling themselves.

I wish to record a BIG THANK YOU to Al Jazeera and its presenter of “Hard Talk” Mahidi Hasan for the efforts made in re-incarnating the BATALAND TORTURE CAMP owned and operated by Ranil Wickramasinghe – the then Minister of Industries and Youth Affairs under the then President J.R. Jayawardena.

Were it not for this bold move by Al Jazeera and Mahidi Hasan, this matter would have been a story buried and sealed under the dirty political culture and strategies of Sri Lanka. Not even the present Government would have awakened to unearth the reality of these atrocities.

I hope this Government will do what is due and discharge its responsibility by bringing all those responsible to account. Hope it will not remain a WISH.

Dear grass-eaters (THANAKOLA EATERS) and all other idiots, beware!

Batalanda and other reports should be published. There’s no doubt about that. Reports of the JVP’s brutality should also be published as soon as possible. The victims should be heard. As far as I know, JVP members killed many more people and were the ones who initiated “Jamal Khashoggi style killings” in the south and other parts of the island.

Oh, AKD Pacharala, how many months does he have left to deceive UNAWATUNA experts or similar PINGONAs? You can tell the same lie over and over again to one person, but not to a large audience.

Now it’s said that Ashoka Ranawala earned his doctorate under the name “Wikramarachchi.” A lie to cover up the many lies already spread. I think you could read a doctorate in Sri Lanka, but not in a developed country. I’m 100 percent sure of that.

The main content of today’s AKD speeches is full of lies and exaggerations. These days, people scratch their heads at the end of every speech released to the press by the AKD, the Prime Minister, and senior ministers.

Bribing Tamil politicians using Public funds is a common practice among Sinhalese leadership over the decades and it is continued even now. There is no difference between Ranil or Rajapaksa. Tamil voters should not vote for any Sinhalese leaders. Over the 77 years, they continued with the same policy about Tamil speaking people and continuously Tamil speaking people did not get any of their rights other than they lost their lives and their economic status.

The author’s comparing the Batalanda torturers to Adolph Eichmann, a major organiser of the Holocaust, is a false comparison because their victims are dissimilar. The Jews committed nothing even remotely similar to the atrocities committed by the JVP to warrant their treatment by the Nazis and hence this author’s judgement and critical thinking is poor or he is being disingenuous.

Leonard,……Batalanda came first, and then the JVP, the party of the common struggling man, came about in retaliation. The physical, psychological, social, and economic strains were terrible on the common man.

The Holocaust and Batalanda are similar although the suffering sides were converse.
In Germany, suffering Germans attacked the capitalistic Jews who held the keys of capitalism (although many were not rich). German capital was stuck in places with no avenue to move or turn. In Sri Lanka, suffering Lankans were being forced to accept Oligarchic economic control where the money did not drip down to them (no taxation of the Oligarchs, and Oligarchs were placing the money they forced out of the suffering workers on overseas accounts rather than investing in the country). Unlike Germany, Lankan monetary capital was easily releasable, but deliberately kept out of reach for overall country development.

Eichmann, like the Lankan capitalistic set, cared naught about the suffering they inflicted. In Sri Lanka, the Oligarchs were/are also of a callous smirking entitlement.

We hope it is still not happening yet again in Sri Lanka, and our Marxist party does indeed have the courage to release the pent up country money for nwcessary country development.

          Hello Leonard,
Here is a comment on the use of Torture etc, by a man, quite possibly with a higher IQ than me, but way below yours.
“To resist a world where actions such as torture, hostage-taking and indiscriminate violence become the norm, we must apply the law without fear or favour in all circumstances. But for too long it has been applied and upheld in a selective manner that threatens our common peace and security. Now is the time to reverse that deeply damaging trend”.
          https://www.archbishopofcanterbury.org/node/2185/printable/print
Or this one from the Catholic Bishops “The Church teaches that torture is intrinsically evil. It is universally condemned by international and human rights organizations”. https://www.usccb.org/resources/torture-intrinsic-evil-catholic-study-guide-one-session-workshop

“…..Batalanda came first, and then the JVP, the party of the common struggling man, came about in retaliation…..”

rtf, not correct! JVP started the killing spree, Batalanda was established consequent to those killings. JVP under the orders of that pseudo Keerthi Wijebahu (Gamanayaka) using DJV label killed so many people in the civil society such as leaders of the UNP, SLFP, and the old left. First they killed Gonawala Sunil – the most faithful gangster servant of RW and a friend of JRJ. Some of those killed were notorious rapists and killers but innocent people were killed too. Nandana Marasinghe was one such very innocent ex-JVPer killed by the DJV. Not only Batalanda but so many other torture houses were established and operated by the UNP government throughout the country. MR and GR were directly involved with Ranjan Wijeratne in these operations. Even most leaders of the left were working in concert with UNP government to save their own souls from JVP/DJV. The result was thousands of youth were killed making this ‘Buddhist’ country a laughing stock in the world!

These are the facts one cannot hide when talking about our 77 year post independence period. There are no saints in politics!

        • 7
          10

Jit,….It was not mass torture and killings that the JVP undertook, but killings of key Oligarchic figures who had stolen the wealth of the nation and never gave back to it.

Normal country would have listened to the crying voices of the masses, incorporated a system of taxation which was non-existant, incorporated some of their wants and needs into the governing systems, and therein saved the country!

No, but UNP state-santioned-tortured these poor souls and forced them to comply with their Oligarchic accumulations. For the few key Oligarchic Crooks that were killed by JVP, UNP tortured and masscared en-masse in Batalanda, the already desperate and suffering Lankan souls.

After that, all hell broke loose till, I believe, CKD caved in weakly to the JVP aspiration, bought out some.of.the leaders with money and foreign scholarships for their children, found the struggling masses jobs of hard-labour in Arab countries, but in no way taxed the Oligarchs to give back a small percentage of their wealth gotten off the hard labor of the common man, so as to hold up the nation.

Hundreds, if not thousands of rural political leaders mainly from the UNP but also from the CP, LSSP were killed and last respects at funerals were banned too.

Wijeweera always wanted this grass root level revolution as he was highly influenced by Che type of liberation for people. One could well justify why JVP had to take arms under a suppressive, almost totalitarian regime, but they should have known the consequences as well. Whichever way one can argue, killing people by kangaroo court orders including top class intellectuals is NOT acceptable at all in a civil society because it will always create a domino effect. The end result is always a carnage and a whole generation suffers consequently, as we all have witnessed already.

          Jit,
You are right. The current wisdom, of course promoted by the government, is that past events happened in a vacuum, and JVP members were the only victims. Some of them may have been misguided idealists, but there were many sadistic terrorists among them. The response (or no response) to youth grievances by UNP and SLFP governments too added fuel.
“MR and GR were directly involved with Ranjan Wijeratne in these operations.”
GR probably was, but MR set up his “Mothers Front” with Mangala Samaraweera and even went to Geneva with proof of atrocities. I wish he had shown the same concern for Tamil youth.
BTW, “Keerthi Wijebahu” was Saman Piyasiri Fernando, and Upatissa Gamanayaka was “Dias Mudalali”.
The JVP and LTTE between them did much damage to the country and its reputation. They are directly responsible for the gun culture we have now.

Thanks OC for the correction, yes SPF was Keerthi Wijebahu and Gamanayaka was the Dias mudalali. However, when giving orders to kill xyz, Gamanayaka did play a leading role even superseding Wijeweera.

MR was very close to Ranjan W and gave him so many info about JVP cadres. Wijedasa Liyanaarachchi was one such direct victim! The payback? GR got medically condemned and a visa to USA!!

        Dear Readers,
I am surprised and saddened that Ramona (a srilanken american citizen who has lived in that country for ages), one of Trump’s supporters, makes such foolish comparisons and thinks we are all fools like the “JVP/NPP voters who elected them.”

The 1989 JVP uprising is believed to have been a tragic and violent period in Sri Lanka’s history, during which both the insurgents and the government suffered significant loss of life. The exact death toll is unknown, but it is estimated that between 60,000 and 100,000 people were killed during the uprising and its aftermath.

The Holocaust, which took place during World War II, was a systematic genocide carried out by Nazi Germany from 1941 to 1945. Approximately 6 million Jews and millions of other people were killed, including Roma (Gypsies), people with disabilities, Polish and Soviet civilians, political dissidents, and others.

It is important to note that these are rough estimates, as many deaths were not immediately recorded and many occurred outside the main camps from shootings, starvation, disease, and other causes. The exact extent of the death toll is still being investigated.

Nimal you ask a very pertinent question.

How did Ranil save Sri Lankan economy ?

Those in Developed societies will be confused by this reference to an “economy” . The entire Sri Lankan economy is smaller than a mid-sized company in Europe or a start up in USA . Ranil must carry a good amount of blame for this embarrassing fact, after all ,he had been President, Prime Minister and Minister so many times in the past 50 years !

It is easy to look good when your predecessor was such idiots like Gotabaya or Sirisena and obvious crooks like Mahinda. If you have some English ( unlike Sirisena or Gota) and does not pick the pocket of visitors to Temple Trees ( MR !) you will look good ! If you don’t try to have 100% organic agriculture like Moron Gota, you are considered a genius by Sunday Times !

As to saving the economy, no one can say what exactly Ranil did ! I mean what original idea did he give ,an idea that did not originate from the IMF ( to which Sri Lanka has gone several times) from a think tank, from an economist at the Central Bank or Finance Ministry . He takes credit for everything !

What original idea or method did Ranil have ?

May be the Vijaya Group can think of some thing ! After all they justify the promotion of nincompoop Ruwan Wijewarena to UNP leadership !

      Deepthi Silva,

You don’t think that defeating the LTTE in 5 years was an achievement? I don’t think an “idiot” could do that. The billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya admitted that only someone of GR’s stature could carry out this task. In fact, our Tamil comrades referred to Prabhakaran as “Sooriyathevan” (God of the Sun). Surely, to defeat a god himself is nothing less than a Herculean task. If VP were alive today, I have no doubt that Leela or some such individual would quickly volunteer to be a “Black Tiger.” Have you noticed that our Tamil comrades never mention Fonseka or Jagath Dias or the like… even though they were on the front line while Gotha was directing from an AC office in Colombo…. they specifically want Gotha’s head (aka “war criminal” in the flowery language of Mr. Scot). They know who “won” the war.
With that said, Gotha was not a good President. Though his intention was never to be President. Some of our other mates in the white caps forced him into it. Joker Ranil cannot give an interview, how is he going to deal with ISIS-backed terrorists?

OC , I didn’t know Chamath was a resident of Wilpattu and became a Billionaire. A nice inspiring story. Lanka is truly amazing in that, someone can be forced to become all powerful President.
But then why did Gotha say
” take everything coming out my orifices as ORDERS “.
Still the most circumstantial tangential and confabulatory reply has to be
          ” justifying torture chambers” .
Is it called oxymoron or simply moron ???

Lester ,both sides are phony. The pot bellied murderer a sun god ! Stupid Gota a master strategist ! The same people who see Ranil as a Genius and MR of royal quality !

Until then the sun god fought Chandrika, Ranil, Wijetunga,

          2

Sun god would have been laughing! In Gota/SF/MR combination the sun god encountered village thugs just like him and this gang had a lot more. And of course the government can spend a lot more than the sun god. In casualties , the army suffered far too many

Were they good soldiers ? I think a few platoons of soldiers from Europe would have wiped out the Sun God in a few weeks. One or two American diplomats could have pacified both sides with a handful of one hundred dollar bills and offers of the Green card ( many soldiers took the offer !)

It was good Gota managed what Ranil/ Chandrika could not. But was he a good soldier ?

            Deepthi,

” I think a few platoons of soldiers from Europe would have wiped out the Sun God in a few weeks.”

Fighting a war is not the same as designing a car. The French lost at Dien Bien Phu, while the Americans had to retreat from Vietnam and Korea. NATO could not defeat the Taliban after 17+ years. There are two main factors here: (I) the terrain (allows for guerilla warfare) and (II) a hostile local population.

“But was he a good soldier ?”

According to the Wiki, “He saw active service in the early stages of the Sri Lankan Civil War with the elite Gajaba Regiment, taking part in several major offensives such as the Vadamarachi Operation, Operation Strike Hard and Operation Thrividha Balaya, as well as counter-insurgency operations during the 1987–1989 JVP insurrection.”

Being promoted in the military is not like some perk that the 225 enjoy. You really do have to prove yourself, because if you’re incapable, a lot of people will die. There are some exceptions, like CBK’s Uncle Ratwatte. That guy was very incompetent, leading to the biggest SLA losses during the civil war.

The war dragged on because of Indian interference. Had India not interfered, JR would have wiped out the LTTE in 1987. Rajapakses would never have been President. Ranil was about to hand 1/3rd of the country to terrorists (with Norwegian assistance). SB’s really had no choice: https://thuppahis.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/unnamed-26.jpg

Sun God fooled many people, particularly the Indians. They could have extradited him to SL easily. He also fooled his own party (TULF), Premadasa, Chandrika, Ranil, and Norway. But he could not fool Mahinda. He knew that and tried to kill Mahinda & Gotha well before 2009, along with SF.

If there was no JR, there may not have been a war.

JR did not want a war. India did not want a war. No one wanted a war excepted VP. He obviously got it at the end.

Even from the grave, VP has fooled people like you and Rohan. That is the power of these psychopaths.

“Stupid Gota a master strategist !”

A man who fought a survival battle (as an uneducated refugee) in the US for 15 long years should be called the army’s master strategist? my foot !

          How stupid is that?
All the big lies have hyped him up as a champion, but it was the three forces that made war victory possible. I think people owe further praise to Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka. . The truth should finally be heard and respected.
Biased Sri Lankan media worked in favor of the Rajapkashe dynasty. That was the plan of MaRa, the most abusive man in lanken politics.
Champika Ranawaka and other party leaders of then COALIATION made it very clear that MaRa was not into a military solution, but various forces forced him to so and until then, he was against it.
The collectivity succeeded in ending the war to eradicate terror in the country. Moreover, the LTTE was already weakened in and out of the country, as its political wing led by Balasingham in Europe had completely collapsed.
And the crucial thing was that late honourable minister, Mr. Kardigamar was then able to secure a ban on LTTE activities in all powerful soils of the earth, and this worked like wildfire.

I don’t think Ranil is as evil as the author purports. He doesn’t come across as a sadist or psychopath. Eichmann and Mengele, for example, fit into both categories. Ranil is likely guilty of financial crimes, such as bribery and illicit activity related to the bond scam. He bribed Muslim ministers with land and money. Some of this land was then used to train the militants who carried out the Easter Attacks, without Ranil’s knowledge. The man likes to travel, flying first-class and stay at 5-star hotels, essentially wasting taxpayer money. One cannot say definitively that Ranil was an LTTE agent, but there was never any attempt to assassinate him, which is suspect.
As a politician, Ranil is thoroughly useless, but that is not a crime. Regarding Batalanda, politicians do certain things for expediency. The US has been engaged in extraordinary rendition since the time of Bill Clinton.

Grandees (old guards) in every party protect opposition party men. They work on a principle of you scratch my back I scratch yours. Batalanda is just another torture camp. That’s all. There have been (are) many more torture camps around the island.

Another notorious torture mill is Josep camp in Vavunia:

Sooka is the executive director of ITJP. She has no credibility. Regarding this report, they claim to have video evidence. They should release it. They should also release audio recordings with the ex-SLA they claim to have spoken too. If this were a court case, ITJP would lose.

              Lester,
I wrote in CT many times that one man’s garage is another man’s gold and vise verse. Credibility is only an individual’s perception. Further, other than in Langkang courts, neither your case is likely to win. Remember how Raviraj murder case was proceeded in Colombo, after one O’ Clock, passing midnight and Mangala next day declared the case will be redone; but nothing happened on that word, and Mangala received the sleeping dose in the hospital when he wasing there for Cpvid 19. Sooka an eminent lawyer, no match can be found in Langkang. That is why she didn’t bring her case to Langkang, because it is like after all these time practicing Human Rights and International Humanitarian law, she just got engaged to sing “Bye Bye Eka bye, Thoy Thoy Eka Thoy” with the Langkang PC comedy lawyers, who just got the pass in the law examination by playing computer came in air-conditioned room. They say in Tamil that the crane doesn’t peck on every pawn and worm wiggle under the water, but it waits until one thing to jet that somebody may “a fish”.

You can get a professional to write any report, for the right amount of money. Whether its Musk and his 14 children living on Mars in the future, or Sooka’s imaginary SL dungeons. The burden of proof is another business. That is where the truth lies. “To say of what is that it is not, or of what is not that it is, is false, while to say of what is that it is, and of what is not that it is not, is true.”

      Hello Lester,
“The US has been engaged in extraordinary rendition since the time of Bill Clinton”. Yes and the British were complicit in helping them. The lying Home Secretary, then Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, denied all knowledge and called it “Conspiracy Theories”. He was taken to Court by a Libyan. Straw lost his Court Of Appeal Case at the Royal Courts of Justice.
      https://theconversation.com/the-stain-of-britains-part-in-torture-and-rendition-will-never-wash-away-99116
It cost the UK Government a great deal when they lost the case https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/apr/24/uk-public-money-fighting-libya-rendition-case-abdel-hakim-belhaj-fatima-boudchar
If you read the Batalanda Report and the depositions made by various people, you will not be able to deny Ranil’s complicity. On this basis the Attorney General should call for his Arrest and Charges made.
      Best regards

        Scot,

Ranil should be arrested and charged for the bond scam . Besides profiting monetarily (which is likely the case), he also helped Arjuna Mahendran to escape to Singapore and may have intentionally blocked his extradition from the latter.
Batalanda was a very long time and as Leonard pointed, was likely in the interest of national security. However, even here there are limits. The extent of torture is up to the Courts to decide. If the victims or their families wish to file a case, I am not against it.

    Evil Just Happened
Evil did not just happen, it was planted, watered, fertilized, fenced and protected until it can show its true color, from the British’s Universal Franchise, (1931). On the other page, Duplicity Jehan PhD was looking for far-sighted voters. Didn’t Sir Pon Ramanathan say during the universal franchise debates that the ordinary Sinhala Buddhist Gentlemen are not the suitable candidates for that sanctimonious duty. That bowl is filled with drug smugglers, rapists, murderers…., etc. The government ordered not to arrest a well-known criminal IGP, Tennakoon. Chandrika started this impunity circus to save Sinhala Buddhist criminals at Batalanda Torture chamber. Rather it was started by Sir Pon Ramanathan, by saving 1915’s riot’s leader Don Stepen, a Christian Sinhala Buddhist. But it is not like the Al Jazeera interview of Evil Emperor, when Ramanathan finished his speech, London Major described him as “The most accomplished orator in the entire British Empire. That is how a man talks on a public stage. Here is a storyteller stacking lies for CNN. But right after the interview he quit the British Ambassador position because not being able to face the question the Tamil diaspora was raising about the facts of the matters he said on CNN. Those impunity sagas are just so conveniently followed even by the NPP government too. Can the NPP bring the truth from Evil? NPP’s Batalanda show!

Drug moguls used a childish drug addict, (possibly a sex addict too, caught in the hands the criminal for free drugs) to stage Langkang most daunting, haunting, frightening and terrifying murder, an accused was brought against judge’s order to the court by Rapist defense men, dumped in witness stand and shot publicly as warning to those who dare to meddle within their business. NPP government declared that it cannot make Lasantha’s case move forward. These criminals kept Langkang as 174th in 179 countries in media safety by removing any reporting try to expose their trades. Now the naive government has declared a woman misled by drug lords as a missing person. Remember, UNP-SLFP Union government has declared 20,000 Tamils gone missing during war (the truth is about 165,000 were genocided) to evade the responsibility of the war crime. Navie NPP government which cannot account for a young Sinhala Buddhist female used as a pawn by a rapist defense force to protect their cartels-empires but has said in UNHRC that it will set up TRC and bring the truth out. Come on man! Please come forward honestly and accept that ignorant, imbecile woman was used as a pawn, thereon put away like curry leaves. While she has taken Air Lanka to her land, Colombo Media says that “she is in India, Uganda, Gana, UK, Greenland, Maldives……”.
