Lakshman Hulugalla who was appointed as the Deputy High Commissioner in the Sri Lankan High Commission in Canberra, Australia during the Rajapaksa regime, has been recalled from service.
Hulugalla is among 36 political appointees of the diplomatic service to be recalled this week and this is the second set of political appointees who will be returning, since the change of regime.
Those returning this week include Deputy High Commissioners, First Secretaries and Second secretaries etc and most of them are recruitments made outside the cadre.
The first set to be recalled included 29 diplomats and the rest are scheduled to follow on a staggered basis. The number of political appointees in the diplomatic service had escalated to such a level that only a handful of officials from the Foreign Service had been attached to the Sri Lankan High Commission in Australia; the rest had all been politically influenced appointments.
