MP and former Cabinet Minister S.B. Dissanayake told a senior monk in Kandy on Monday (5) that President Nandasena Gotabaya Rajapaksa was perplexed by his plunging popularity in the country, and had recently gathered secretaries to government ministries to demand reasons for the steep decline in support.
“The American president is still so popular. But my popularity has really fallen – why is that” (මං හොඳටම වැටිලා ඉන්නේ) President Rajapaksa had demanded, Dissanayake told the prelate, narrating that the room was filled with secretaries from various government ministries. The MP tried to explain the Government’s failures placing the blame squarely on the shoulders of officialdom, insisting that the President’s orders were simply not being carried out.
“I pointed out to the President that his instructions were not being followed. The thing is hamuduruwane even though instructions are being given they are not being carried out,” Dissanayake claimed.
“But all their own things get done,” the priest snapped back.
Dissanayake was paying tribute to the Chief Incumbent of the Gatambe Rajovapavanaramaya Ven Kappetiyagoda Siriwimala on the occasion of his 90th Birth anniversary.
The Chief Incumbent was scathing in his criticism of the Gotabaya Rajapaksa Administration, insisting that “time had run out” for the Government to fulfill its promises to the people. Ven. Siriwimala criticised the decision to put military personnel in positions of authority. “Soldiers know how to fight in a war. They don’t know how to run a country,” the chief monk insisted.
“In all honesty, we are totally disillusioned. We don’t do politics here and in fact look at what has become of us for getting involved in politics,” the priest complained.
Dissanayake tried to explain that the Government was facing a major cash crunch because the country’s main sources of revenue had taken a hit during the pandemic. “Well that has happened to the whole world,” Ven. Siriwimala retorted.
Dissanayake replied: China has told us to take whatever money we need and give it back whenever we can. The Government has been given a clear message from China that they can give us any amount of money we need, returnable when the country can do so.”
The Gatambe priest’s grievance is particularly telling because he was a staunch supporter of Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s candidacy. The priest actively campaigned for Rajapaksa’s victory in 2019, telling his Sinhalese devotees that the country was in dire need of a strong leader to pull it back from the brink of destruction. “This is our country’s last chance” he told candidate Gotabaya in August 2019 as he blessed the SLPP nominee for President.

In the real world, the Sri Lankan economy may have just entered a phase of economic paralysis with foreign debt crisis becoming critical in 2021:
1. Rating agencies have already downgraded Sri Lanka’s sovereign credit ratings.
2. Contraction of trade as a percentage of GDP.
3. Low tax revenue.
4. Lack of foreign direct investment.
5. Over 50% of the country’s foreign loans were commercial borrowings, most of them are International Sovereign Bonds. ISBs have a short payback period, high interest rates (over6% and to be paid biannually) and no grace period. When an ISB matures, foreign debt repayment requirements skyrocket, resulting in a large foreign currency outflow. Expect increased important controls to mitigate the outflow.

Really CT, did the president DEMAND to make him popular? Reading this kind of reporting is like reading a badly written novel, where the story teller lays the ground to paint the villain in the story. The subtle introduction of the word DEMAND instead of ASKED is wilful distortion of what actually happened and it is forceful way of painting a wrong picture and making the reader believe the worse of the president. I personally didn’t like the president at all, and was extremely disappointed when he was elected, but this president has shown that he genuinely want to do the best for all the people in the country. Cheap media is proving what the actual problem is. Further down in the article the conversation is translated and it says: “But my popularity is really falling. Why is that, he asked.”
So, actually he didn’t DEMAND but ASK. I hope the so-called journalists at CT know the difference between DEMAND and ASK.

SB, one of the so well known crooks and a rogue. He has no place in any civlised society. It is a shame he met the clergy and if so for what. Regarding popularity all what he has done is to make minorities as enemies and criminals and non citizens. He played with the honor of the minority to hoodwink the foolish sinhala buddhists to win election. And then he got surrounded by a bunch of brainless cronies including even the shamless nariya GL Peries and many more and thoght hre can run the country with these bunch of fools. UN fiasco is a good example. Dinesh another clown claiming he won the vote in the UN. Colombage was branded as a fool and a liar by Tim Sebastian, oh deiyane he is the secretary to the minstry of foreign affair. Gotta cant go on surviving by destroying the minorites, taking their places of worship, their lands, their rights and identity. Now the foolish mass has realised that they were well and trult taken for a good ride, but too late. How many are having three meals a day. While majority starve they have Mrs lanka pageant and what a shame that was, an additiona feather to the country. Soon there is going to be Mrs world contest, another fun ahead.
