I Wish Sajith Premadasa Had Taken Up A Challenging Ministry To Showcase His Prowess

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

“The key insight required of a leader in governance is practical understanding of economic and social policy. He cannot lead otherwise -by charity work and populistic games. Gifting houses is charity work. In terms of opportunity cost, the cost of diverting public funds to housing  like this is considerable. This is not to deny that there is no need for special housing projects for vulnerable families, disabled persons etc. That is a charity that must be done; yet it is charity, and the mind of the relevant minister doesn’t  have to operate in challenging labyrinths and pathways.”

Expectations, Father & Son

Sajith Premadasa has put his hands up for leadership in the party and for nomination by the United National Party in the forthcoming presidential elections. I wish Sajith had tested himself, and gave the public a chance to test, his distinctive capabilities and resourcefulness as a leader in governance. He has, indeed,  proved to be an effective speaker resonating with our memory of his illustrious Dad. But that is just one qualifying factor. In the complex and most challenging situation the island now confronts, very much more is expected of a leadership aspirant. The biological fact of being the son of the father is hardly relevant to the Lankan public’s political perceptions today. Neighbouring India has unequivocally rejected this ‘right of inheritance,’ notion.

Senior Premadasa

At the end of the day, one has to lean on the cliche that the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Ranasinghe Premadasa demonstrated his effectiveness in many ways before he was able to pierce through a party that was then known to be feudalistic. That was the senior Premadasa’s great moment. He was Colombo city Councillor, Colombo’s Mayor, the Minister in charge of local government and housing and Prime Minister. The senior accomplished himself well and truly and created a strong impression of efficiency, response to challenges, discipline and hardwork.

While on his political journey up, senior Premadasa showed another good quality, namely, loyalty to his party and party leader. He once said that one has to learn to be a follower becoming a leader. That was what Ranasinghe Premadasa had been.

To most of us who had the fortune to be in some proximity to Ranasnghe Premadasa, we witnessed a man with enormous drive, selfconfidence, and ambition to reach the top. His peer rcognition was unambiguous except for the ‘elite leaders,’ like Lalith Athulathmudali who always seemed to me to be sceptical and even scornful of Premadasa. It was this drive that built Premadasa’s resillience and his determination to overcome all obstacles.

Weakness of the Inheritance Factor

President Premadasa was killed even before the LTTE bomb and that was when charges went viral that he was behind the killing of prominent persons. I frankly do not know the sources of these rumours and how they ignited a fire of public disgust  that eventually made thousands of persons cheer and light crackers when the leader was bombed to death. There was something not quite right. Fact or fiction, the fact is that happened happen.

A significant lesson for Sajith here is that in the course of election rhetoric the opposing candidate can caricature and fictionalise the murder allegations. This sullies Sajith’s reliance on the ‘right’ of inheritance.

Taking Challenges

Sajith never showed, then and now, the same positive drive and ticker toward leadership of the Grand Old Party. He seems to me as having been more reliant on the legacy factor. He took the subject of housing and moved to the periphery of the island focusing on solving the housing problem. What are the challenges and perennial obstacles that surface in housing? Nothing. The minister depends on national budgetary allocations and spends the money he has got by giving a contractor to do the job. It is a question of taking from the national purse and distributing among selectees. Something extra Sajith could have done is to undertake a housing census to identify the more deserving of public charity like this. Here, the minister has faulted. The public are not aware of the criteria for selection. It seems to be ad hoc and piecemeal.

Sajith, once, did challenge Ranil Wickremasinghe for leadership of the party. But, here too, he had nothing to show other than being the son of the father. His father virtually demonstrated his ability in taking challenges and then put up his hands up.

Validity of the Housing Project

Sajith Premadasa’s belief that he can solve the housing problem this way by diverting the poor resources of the national treasury are easily subject to challenge by economists. It is bad economic policy to begin with. The minister will not make even a dent on the national housing problem this way. No country in the world has solved housing needs this way. The real path is to  boost the per capita income, have lands released  otherwise – by and get banks to come in a big way and render secure housing loans.

Economic growth is crucial. This needs an overhaul of the economy in many structural ways, to encourage exports  and direct foreign investment and to develop entrepreneurship.  To be fair, the current government is on this line of attack and I wish Sajith had joined one of these government endeavours and worked in a big way. In Australia, the Treasurer’s job (Finance Ministry) is deemed next-in-line to premiership. That experience is so challenging and self-learning very much suited to the goal of apprenticing for leadership.

The key insight required of a leader in governance is a practical understanding of economic and social policy. He cannot lead otherwise -by charity work and populistic  games. Gifting houses is charity work. In terms of opportunity cost, the cost of diverting public funds to housing  like this is considerable. This is not to deny that there is no need for special housing projects for really vulnerable  families, disabled persons etc. That is a charity that must be done; yet it is charity, and the mind of the relevant minister doesn’t  have to operate in challenging labyrinths and pathways.

    Dear Shyamon,
We have already witnessed Sajith P’s PROWESS countless times. Latest being his diehard support for the DEATH PENALTY. Despite his background from Royal College, Milhill College & that all-important basecamp of liberal, progressive, political-economic thinking in the world, namely LSE, London, UK, Sajith P plays to the gallery. Thus his unwavering support for the DEATH PENALTY in SL.
Sajith P represents Maria Kade politics based on 3rdclass patronage, free handouts to desperate people in exchange for a lifetime of political enslavement. Do you want to be DUPED? Elect Sajith P.
    Cheers!

I think you are on to something Shyamon.

Unfortunately, I don’t think he has had a proper education and it shows in his speech and in his deeds/actions.

He knows the importance of an education ……….. hence his bogus claims and allusions to attendance at and qualifications from universities which those institutions have denied.

Sajith P keeps his cards to himself. Can’t blame him for buttering the Hamuduruwos. He needs them on his side to win. But if you really want to know what a man is like, you must look at his friends. Sirisena is his friend. And then there is Killi Maharajah and Sirasa.
        Hmmm…….

I’m not trying to contest for the presidency; you Einstein!

I presume you are even less educated than Sajith!!

          Ah! Lankans!!!

What would Lanka be without your types? Educated?

You just had to rush in where others fear to tread, eh?

You guys make my day! :))))

            Dear nimal fernando,
            .
I often wonder who you are, really.
            .
I do realise, from what you write, that you are very intelligent, fantastically well-read and knowledgeable – highly educated, in fact.
            .
We do need much younger people leading our country, so I may give Sajith a Third Preference if he is the UNP candidate. Karu Jayasuriya is older than me, and he will not get any vote from me.
            .
Nagananda Kodituwakku will get my First Preference. Any reader who doesn’t understand what I’m saying about “Preferences” doesn’t know what the System of Elections in Sri Lanka is. This applies to 90% of Sri Lankans. They vote, and we get the governments that they deserve. It’s so easy to find out how Sri Lanka has a Presidential Voting System like no other. Why not do that finding out, before you go to the polling booth?
            .
nimal, I’ve been too busy with things parochial to comment much recently. It’s good to see you monitoring this from afar. You are in a “Developed Country” somewhere; I’m in my remote Uva village, but I think that we appreciate that we each can see things that the likes of “George II” and “Sam” cannot.

Your sadly mistaken. He had a London Degree and his English is class although he does not use it.
Sad that uncle is still keeping an arms length from him.

          “He had a London Degree”

There is nothing called a “London Degree!”

He has tried to allude that he attended LSE (London School of Economics) and the LSE has said they have no record of such a person.

So what? A correspondence school in “London?”

The problem is not the degree but him lying about it. That’s not a good start for a presidential-aspirant.

What you are doing is a classic form of Sri Lankan lying by using a generic term “London Degree” ……….. sadly many ignorant Lankan voters will get deceived.

Let’s be honest here if we can.

What have you got to say? Now, don’t run away.

Building a nation is not like building houses on government allocations. Further giving away houses to ‘live’ does not end the problems of the house owners. That is only part of it . They must be provided with a lively hood to enable them to mange the house and even to effect urgent repairs and maintenance, which may arise sooner than later, due to poor construction.
To be a president of a country like ours you have to be impartial to all communities in Srilanka. Has he got the courage to call spade a spade when the hamuduruwas conduct themselves in an unbecoming manners like forcibly entering Hindu/ Christian/Muslim places of worship and construct vihares.. Has he got what it makes to treat all religions without discrimination and not give foremost place to Buddhism. Is he capable of implementing the language rights as stipulated in the constitution, however inadequate it may be. Will he be in a position put a stop the colonization of the Tamil district by the Sinhalese deliberately and there after colonize the areas with Buddha Statues/Vihares much against the wishes of Lord Buddha..
Will he be able to provide employment to the unemployed. If citizens have employment the need to provide free houses may not arise. May be cost of houses could be subsidized. Education is another important aspect which has to be looked into, not by politicians but by educationist who have the capacity to provide facilities to all communities equally.
Last but not least will he take action against former Presidents and Ministers and high government officials including the former Central Bank Governor and all those politicians and high ups who aided and abetted the misdeeds.together with the Prime Minister who is alleged to be involved in this episode.
Is it necessary to have an Executive president?

There is nothing to wish , Sajith Premadasa will be a failure like DS, SWRD, Srima, JR, Chnadrika, Premadasa , Rajapakse and of course Ranil. All these fellows made a big stink but the country is still a poor third world , with broken down institutions and very dishonest people.

Even when these so called achievers were running about we never progressed. Just compare with Malaysia, Thailand etc. Don’t even think of Singapore..

If Young man Premadasa had any abilities or self respect , he would never have worked under a man with such a low cunning like Ranil. Actually, what has Ranil achieved in 50 years of living on public money ? The UNP cannot even face an election today !

This kind of Pro Ranil articles are sickening . It is like claiming that Australia needs the brains of Shymon to function well, Like Ranil is a must for the UNP !. The truth is these desperate immigrants are bringing down Australia with their slime and bogus character and obvious lack of any modern skills.I feel sorry for Australia , which is so naive to open their doors to con-artists from third world countries.

It is the same with Ranil. Just a slimy and slithery snake charmer

No, he should give utmost priority to keeping his stupid-clown spouse completely out of his official duties and responsibilities. Here’s another Shiranthi monster in the making. We the voters won’t stand for this ever again.

Sajith’s credibility and ability is at a very low rung when we consider that Sirasa is backing him and the manner in which he is cozing up to the greatest betrayer of all time Mr. Aapaya. I don’t trust Sajith and share Shyamon’s hearty views. I hope the UNP will consider Karu as their candidate who has been the bulwark for democracy.

No matter what, our loyalty to Ranil Hamu will last till the end of times. There is no match to this capable energetic leader who has led the UNP for the last 30 years.

It is True, Ranil wants to be there for ever, fall down and die inside the Parliament so he will get even military honours of 21 gun salutes in his funeral parade.
Anyway, the load of lies he says in a day does not look like he would win. Only positive thing is they are elected to present the Electoral districts and not for the electorate.
What Sajith Pemadasa and even Ranil says, I am doing what my father wanted me to do. so, they all are chosen Leaders.

Meaning when there is a shortage of Sugar the alternative is a flowers from the Illupai Tree ( I don’ how the tree is called in English- (May be a type of Olive Flower which is mildly sweet- a poor alternative.). This was available in Jaffna in plenty during the rainy season and BATS frequent the tree.

In a well researched study on “The Truth About Leadership” James M Kouzes and Barry Z Posner presented TEN TRUTHS about “LEADERSHIP”: (1) You Make A Difference (2) Credibility Is The Foundation Of Leadership (3) Values Drive Commitment (4) Focusing on the Future Sets Leaders Apart (5) You Can’t Drive It Alone (6) Trust Rules (7) Challenge Is the Crucible for Greatness (8) You Either Lead By Example or You Don’t Lead At All (9) The Best Leaders Are The Best Learners (10) Leadership Is An Affair Of The Heart. Do we see these “TRUTHS” in this man touted (by a group of disgruntled set of “politicians”) in this person named “Sajith Premadasa”? The loud answer, in my opinion is NO. I present the above “TEN TRUTHS” to the PEOPLE of Sri Lanka to be used as a “MEASURING TOOL” in their selection of a “LEADER” in these “Turbulent Times” when the very foundations of Organizations (Legislative; Executive & Judiciary) and Societies are being shaken. So far ALL the “Leaders” who were given that “Leadership” have FAILED us and FAILED themselves and the NEED has arisen and it is URGENT to LOOK for a “NEW LEADER”. I hope those who are “Campaigning” and “Sponsoring ” candidates would provide the necessary GUIDANCE to the PEOPLE bearing in mind that NEED , I have proposed above. This is the LAST CHANCE.

The best and visible way for Sajith Premadasa “To Showcase His Prowess” is to make his Ministry out standing.
Shyamon Jayasinghe cannot claim that Sajith has had successes here. Or has he?
    .
If Sajith considers Gnanasara Thera an angel, it makes him pretty ordinary.

the problem is not what we want, but what the people want.I agree with shyamon that minister of housing is a cushy job compared to the minister of finance and in australia the treasurer is considered a better candidate to take over, than the other ministers, but australia and sri lanka are poles apart with one a third wold country and another a first world one.So the thinking of voters will be different.

The UNP should do a grass roots internal poll(they may have already)to see whether the people want karu, sajit or ranil or someone else. The UNP has to bend to the peoples wishes if it want to continue in power. So really the decision is if we want to go with the person we want then we will have to be in opposition. If we go with the person that the people want,we will be in government.

So really the choice is clear.Though shyamon talks sense if we follow his advice the UNP will be in opposition and the rajapakshes will make the comeback. The voters get the representatives that they deserve and if you meddle with that you will end up in political disaster .

ps.Inreal estate they say, location, location, location. In politics it is people, people, people. Those who can feel the pulse of the people, however dumb the people may be,will be the winners.

anyway sajith can’t be worse than sirisena.,so it is a improvement of sorts.Compared to sirisenas gona face and gobba smile.sajit only has a gona face.In 2025 another gona face and gobba smile young bloke will be eligible. Now don’t many voters too have the gona face and gobba smile?

Oh Shyamon, Oh Shyamon, man you want us to vote for Ranil, no way man. Ranil, Sirisena and all other broods who are after the Presidency would loose miserably, and the people lost all hopes and faith in all of them. We had lot hopes on Ranil but he turned out to be the worst leader the country ever produced. He with his no two pennies worth gang destroyed the UNP party and the country for good. He and his dirty gang didn’t allow the best in the party and government to perform up-to their full potentials. He packed the working committee with his back lickers, and gave the best ministries to his useless boot lickers. The ministries secretaries have to report to the PM’s secretaries, and ministers are not given the freedoms to carry out their works to their full potentials. The PM’s gate keepers like Charitha
Ratwatte and Parskerlingam are on the back of the ministers and wouldn’t let them function well. Hence, Ranil has royally messed up
everything, and it’s time for him to go, and leave room for a capable person. He should stay as Senior Minister without portfolio like how former PM Lee of Singapore stayed until his death. When Najib of Malaysia lost, 400,000 grass root BN party carders voted to elect Zahidi as next party leaders, and the same is happening in the UK to elect the leader of the conservatives party but this is not there in the UNP, and next leader should be elected by the card carrying party members, and not by the working committee members.

      Manel Fonseka

Why some people believe he is qualify to be not only the leader of UNP but a leader of this island? What special qualities does he possess, with which how could he contribute to the island?

Former British MP Tony Benn used to ask five questions of anyone who hold power. A slightly modified version:

      1. What power will he have ?
      2. Where will he get it from?
      3. In whose interests will he exercise it?
4.To whom will he be accountable?
      5. How can we get rid of him?

Remember Sajith is not a secular politician. He panders to all kind of chauvinism.
A few years ago at an UNP Executive meeting he suggested that the country should adapt Bhumiputra system of governance.

He seems to have wasted two years of his life in London, pretended/claimed to have studied at London School of Economics where N M did his PhD.

What is he going to bring to UNP, the country, the people,….. that other candidates can’t.

      Dynasties take everything for granted.
People in South Asia need to break the cycle of Dynasty building.

            Dear Native,

Malcolm Ranjith as the President and Vellala Wiggy as the PM.

            Here are the reasons..
Malcolm is the most patriotic Sinhala Person in the Land.
His Highness will ensure our Lankawe will be in one piece as long as he lives.
HH has a vehicle, driver, and no partners or offsprings to buy Luxury Condos, Or send to London for studies and won’t have to buy Apartments like our Rainbow Samare has done. even without children.

Velalla Wiggs has been a Public Servant at the highest level and has lived among the other Ethnics all his Life.
He didn’t like Pira although he pretended to be a Pira buddy to get the CM Job.
After getting the sack, he stuck it up to the Vellala Party boss and his TNA.
I am sure Vellala Wiggs knows that Srilnakans have to be One Unit with a Level Playing Ground for All , without differences in Caste, Creed , and Money to move forward as a successful nation…
Most of all both are averse to Santhosams..

BTW , Can His Highness take leave at least for 5 years?..

              KASmaalam K.A. Sumanasekera

Are you sure you know what you are talking about?

              For a start he is a Sinhala/Christian behaving just like a Sinhala/Buddhist.
He established close rapport with almost all the saffron clad thugs and their leader.
His appearance is a deception, he is a closet Sinhala/Buddhist (….) who pronounced this island being a Sinhala/Buddhist country.
He opposes same sex marriage. He believes it is a “defect” to be a homosexual. If that is the case his church must be a great sanctuary for many of them.
He failed to understand the difference between universal human rights and established institutional religions.
He believes Buddhism is relatively superior to Christianity.

Only last year some 85 prominent catholics issued a scathing statement against him.

For the above reasons you consider him as an ideal candidate.
However people won’t vote for him.

CV is tired and fed up.
Please let him retire from active politics and spend more time with his family.

By the way who is your next choice.
              Gota?

                Dear Native,

That is why I picked his Highness…
                Thanks for explaining it succinctly.

Vellala Wigs is not bad either, although you are trying hard to retire him premature..
They say you have to pick a crook to control the crooks..
But here it is Vellala, mind you..

What do you think of that Ganeshan Dude.
He is now a full fledged member of Dr Ranil.s Elite , Anglican Vellala Faction.
Does he now get invites to Thaipongal at the TNA Head Quarters?…

“That is why I picked his Highness…”

Are you a secret Sinhala/Christian fascist supporter of Aryan Adolf Hitler whom the public racist Anagarika Homeless Dharmapala admired?

                  Too bad.

“They say you have to pick a crook to control the crooks..”

Did they also say it has to be either Basil, Mahinda or Wimal?

Sons (daughters) of leaders are always failures; DS/Dudley; SWRD/Anura and Chadrika. The same with Premadasa and Sajith. So there.

Dear Native Vedda (and Manel Fonseka),
        .
You have quoted from Tony Benn. He was actually made “2nd Viscount Stansgate” so as to be pushed into the House of Lords. He fought against it, and remained in the Commons.
        .
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Benn
        .
I have had a few friendly exchanges with “K.A. Sumanasekera”. He should try to understand that there are strange types in the world whom he cannot understand. There are many strange aspects to Sajith Premadasa’s outlook on life. He does play to the gallery, and I don’t like it.
        .
I may still give him the “Third Preference” which I will not give an aged UNP candidate. First Preference to Nagananda Kodituwakku who is an uncut diamond.
        .
Why don’t the voters of Sri Lanka think?

        .
That’s easy enough to answer I guess. “No Time”.
        .
Well, you’d better find time to think now, than be sorry later.
        .
I have dropped six names here – NV, Manel, Tony Benn, Sumanasekera, Sajith, Nagananda – but have not met one of them.
        .
My “real name” – Panini Edirisinhe.

All of this is academic and pointless. This government fucked up. Rajapasksha will sweep this election. With the final and most monumental fuck up of this government, MR has 70% of the sinhala buddhist vote in his pocket at this moment, that’s 49% of the total vote at the ballot. But i suspect MR actually has more than 70% of the Sinhala buddhist vote. In the larger scheme of things it is irrelevant who is even contesting for the UNP.

But even looking at this from the UNP perspective, this whole affair is bizzare. I think it is in the best interest for both parties not to run. Let Ranil run. Let him lose. Then he will die (politically). Then the next generation can rebuild.

        Hug?

My great fear, SD, is that you are right.
      .
If you are right, it’s curtains for civilised life in Sri Lanka.

Oh Boy…. This is worse than Galleon Ravi calling Keselwatta Kid an OL Dropout from Royal…

I just read the other dude Vishwamithra saying there is a shining star hiding in the UNP, who has been scoring heavily for the Team since 1994…
And Vishwa reckons he is the Real Deal and will Shit it in , as Shaymon’s Aussie mate’s in the Pub would say..
But the sad part is Vishwa wants us to visit the UNP archives to find him…

What puzzles me is why the LTTE Friendly TNA Leader went all the way to Matara to say he does not want to go even Federal, let alone going for an Independent Eelaam even in the North.,
    What a change of Position.

Is Sampathar now saying Dr Ranil wasted all those rillions of Tax Payers Money in Free Car Permits , Special Allowances , Foreign Junkets and even Cocktail Parties with Western Embassies and even offered LKR 150 Million up wards for a Vote in Kotte to give him 2/3 to pass Dr Jayamapathy’s Federal Constitution for nothing ?.

Dr Ranil’s Digital Minister Harin Fernanado who saved his dear life thanks to the” Intelligence” of his sick Dad has now come out swinging in support of Keselwatta Kid.

Harin says the Kid is only 52 . and he has won the Hearts and Minds of all Dalits with his Charity Work.
Being a heavy hitter and a strong Catholic may be Minister Harin is planning to divert the Catholic Vote in the Bible Belt to the Kid.

What a contrast in Opinions between this Powerful Minister from the Catholic faction of the UNP and a Cheer Leader of the UNP , Elite Anglican and Vellala Faction of Dr Ranil’.

Wonder whether Mr Shaymon did his OL at Royal…

Briefly Shyamon, what are you trying to say? The grand old party must continue to be run by Wickamasingham the great? The proof of the pudding is can he, unless he plays a trick, win a Presidential Election? You shower praises on Premadasa dad. Did he have all the knowledge with respect to Economic Policy etc. which you claim that it is a must for a leader to have? Such policy advice can always be obtained from an expert. Don’t misunderstand. I don’t hold a brief for Sajith. He has shown his arrogance, so much so that his wife already thinks that she is the “Aaryawa” (the first lady). The reality of the matter is that minorities who support the UNP, which is a must for the UNP equation for electoral victory, are most comfortable with Ranil and Sajith is described as a racist in whispers. Fools rush where angels fear to tread. Alas! Ranil has not inherited the wisdom and the maturity of his “uncle” JR and indeed decided on certain vital things in a manner which JR would not have in that manner.

Sajith is a coward. Ravi K is a crook. Watchout for Karu to slip in from the backdoor and Maha Nayake support.

Ranil is looking for a guarantee of survivorship, no matter which of these clueless personalities grabs the chair.

Whats left to be seen is the trump the Rathu Aliyas might play, and upset the Thambili cart!
