In Search Of Few Good Men – Part II

By W. Vishnu Gupta –

W. Vishnu Gupta

In March of this year I stated the following in Part -1 of this article.

“Sri Lankan voters have failed to elect a visionary or a pragmatic leader since the death of Hon. D.S.Senanayake.  The voters keep on voting for the same self centered, condescending, corrupt individuals and their family members responsible for failed governments and making us a miserable lot on earth.

Our nation is headed in the wrong direction. The central promise of 2015 elections; -uprooting the country’s deeply corrupt, oligarch-controlled political system –remains unfulfilled. Heavily tainted 19th amendment to the constitution, Erosion of confidence in government institutions plus the financial markets and the Power struggle between oligarchs exemplifies the backsliding.

Yet the old guard representing crony capitalism and crony socialism hopes that voters will be naïve and opt for “experience” once more in 2020.  If they succeed, what a travesty; no future generation will forgive us for not doing enough to select “Few Good Men”. 2020 is the most opportune time for “Revolution of Dignity” guided by our religious convictions and to prove plutocrats and oligarchs lead by hedonism are wrong.”

It is heartening to note that a few good men are trickling down to challenge oligarchy leaders holding onto power and trampling our birth rights. What oligarchs have in store or thrown on to the stage so far is no different from what people have encountered during last 71 years of failed governments. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Sajith Premadasa or may be Ranil Wickremesinghe or Karu Jayasuriya. All these fellows are responsible for misery, hopelessness and poverty that exist in the country today. Anura Kumara Dissanayake of JVP a prima donna in the Sri Lankan parliament alleged to have authorized the JVP national list of prospective MP’s that included Ibrahim linked to Easter Sunday Carnage. JVP MPs are also party to luxury vehicle scandal that robbed billons from the national coffers. The above shameless lot and their families are alleged to have stolen from the treasury of the people or “The Begging Bowl of Lord Buddha”. They have started nationwide media circuses with the help of party thugs and goons transported to regional big cities from various parts of the country for the customary political games utilizing ill-gotten wealth to hoodwink and swindle the nation again in 2020. If it is not ill-gotten wealth, voters must have at least common sense to question, how an unemployed person like Gotabaya will be able to throw a lavish private dinner party to political goons and thugs at “Shagri- La Hotel” on 22d August 2019. Moreover, the voters should understand Rajapaksas did not have any wealth or any noticeable asset in the family prior to Mahinda Rajapaksa getting into the parliament of Sri Lanka. The same goes with others, only difference is Anura keeps his booty in the JVP coffers.

Campaign to Evict 225 Plus 1

As a good start to win the Presidential election a few good men/women should launch the election campaign to get rid of 225 members of the parliament and current President of Sri Lanka. 225+1 should never be able to appear in our political system to hoodwink the masses again with deceits, intimidation, bribes, false promises, ethnic divisions or unnoticed election rigging techniques. The country and the people deserve a forthright, upright and pragmatic leader to rescue citizens from oligarchs responsible for 71 years of injustices and grand larceny including selling our future to highest bidders from overseas.   They and their cohorts and goons collectively responsible for 71 years of darkest period of our nation’s history

Electing a new President will not satisfy the people until all 225 MPs are evicted and sent on an indefinite holiday. The time has come for a few good chosen men to just do that.

Glimmer of Hope

It was reported that like-minded few good men have assembled at the CIDA Auditorium in Colombo on August 22nd  2019. They were led by Attorney at Law Nagananda Kodituwakku and businessman Rohan Pallewatte furthermore according to Republic Next it was reported;

“Alternative” presidential hopefuls Nagananda Kodituwakku and Rohan Pallewatta joined hands yesterday, vowing to defeat the mainstream political parties that have ruled the country since Independence at the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections. Their decision to work together was revealed at the official launch of a new political alliance titled the Abiman Lanka Peramuna (ALP) held in Colombo yesterday.”

It seems after nearly two years of tireless “One Man Battle”, Naganada has finally found a solid launching pad or beach-head for his campaign to dislodge our nation from the clutches of 225 + 1 oligarchy members and self centered followers of Machiavellian principles. The new political entity ALP and its leaders have given us a glimmer of hope. Therefore it is necessary; their message is understood by every household in the country irrespective of class, creed and ethnicity. There won’t be another chance to stop backsliding, destruction of democracy, growing distrust between different ethnic groups and denial of our birth rights. 2020 is a very decisive year for all Sri Lankans. Present political leaders and their cohorts must be told “Enough is enough” and shown the exit with one full sweep in the forthcoming presidential election.

    Dear Vishnu Gupta;

Thanks for the candid and frank opinions expressed. Hopefully, many more good men and women rally around Nagananda to get rid of the 225+1. Time has come to evict them from our parliament. It will be never done through any of the candidate so far declared by old Juntas and Red Shirts. The had their Tamashas during last 71 years.

I call upon all Sri Lankans to listen carefully and consider this option. Neither of them are looking to become millionaires and after this nation has gone through so many decades of heartbreak (since 1956) it is time to pick a different entity altogether.

      Dear k.soysa,
      .
      Very true.
He is for a totally secular state, although he himself is a Buddhist who quotes regularly from the Dharma in Pali. He is not a superstitious Buddhist. I remember that this seemed to be one of your aching concerns.

I’m different. Rt. Rev. Justin Welby turns up tomorrow. I guess you’ll see him in person, although there can be no question of your actually meeting him – at least meeting in a meaningful way. My respect for him is immense after seeing how honest and open he was about this:

Many reports in a score of newspapers. The situation that I have to report in Sri Lanka is very different. Here the Church cheats:
      .
In 2016, I gave the Headmasters of the S. Thomas’ schools in Bandarawela and Kollupitiya the benefit of the doubt, thinking that the Headmasters would respect The Rules. This is the last of the three articles that I wrote on the subject.

I have written, by Registered Post to Bishop Dhilo about the shocking incidents that took place. There has, so far, been no response from him. From here, where do we go? I feel that this time round, in the absence of any sign of change in the Bishop’s behaviour, I ought to alert the public long before the end of the year, because these BoG elections could be held any time between the 1st of January and the 1st of 31st of March.

NAgananda initially said, that he is not going to involve in Sri lankan politics. As it is VERY corrupt. Then suddenly, he changed mind he began to hide it even from CT to where he wrote articles. Now people accuses him as a British spy. I heard he was saying that JVP wants him to come with them. Ask JVP they would say, we can not remember when he asked us to join with us.

Is Gupta an Indian name or an Indian Sri Lankan? Or Sri Lankan Tamil? Every Gupta I knew as usually a Hindi speaker.

What Vishnu Gupta say’s could be music to the ears, but unfortunately politics and life on the Sri Lanka landscape just does not work that way. The Nagahananda / Pallewatte combine would hardly be able to muster even a measly 50,000 votes in the whole country. If they could it would be a first time achievement. That is the reality.
Coming back to reality this is a very opportune time for the UNP Leader and PM RW, Deputy UNP leader Sajith, along with all supporters of the UNP including the people of Sri Lanka to show the world that we are today politically adept.
( An Example :The British were unable to decide what they really wanted “Brexit / OR NOT” and them being the home of democracy).Today they are in a right royal mess.
Sri Lankans on the other hand decided well on January 8th 2015 and sent a corrupt, nepotist, autocratic, and rogue administration packing and thought that they had brought in a President as pure as his white dress that he so proudly wears.
How very wrong 6.2 million of us were. The first mistake MS who is not fit even to become a Grama Sevaka grabbed the leadership of the SLFP from the MR. That was the biggest blunder that MS did. If he had stayed aloof of the SLFP, the SLPP would not have been formed. Chandrika would have used whatever influence she still wielded within the SLFP to undermine MR.
Today the UNP leadership along with Ranil and Sajith have got a golden opportunity to turn our country from the abyss it has fallen into.
The UNP should back Sajith as the Presidential candidate bringing along all like minded parties. The JVP too would fall behind Sajith if his policies are acceptable. Sajith should relinquish his UNP ,membership and stand for election representing ALL SRI LANKANS.

This is a good analysis. It is good to make Sajith President a powerless position and have Mangala as PM

After MS retires the 19th amendment triggers. The next president will have no power and it is the PM who is vested with executive power. The next president can’t even hold a Ministerial portfolio. The next president is only a nominal head. He won’t be able to do anything wihhout the PMs permission.

This is a much-needed article, Mr W. Vishnu Gupta. It sounds as though you have found “the needle in the haystack” as one brief comment had referred to your first article, which also I have looked at. If we want good leaders, we must educate ourselves about all the candidates who come forward; also the strange system of Preference Voting. Professor Kumar David has now written three articles on the subject. This is just one. Please navigate to them.

I think that you are right to have hit on Nagananda and Rohan Pallewatte. No time to write now, but will do so.
    .
Yesterday, I heard the brief Nagananda Youtube from the Catholic shrine at Madhu. He was on his way to Jaffna to meet the “Dravida people”. Could you please advise him on that – or discuss it. Fifty years ago, when a typical decent Buddhist wanted to refer respectfully to a Tamil person he used to speak of a “Dravida minihek”
    .
Now I know that this is all wrong. If you see my colour you should realise that I have few North Indian genes; it’s obvious that they are mostly Dravidian, although as far as I’m aware all known ancestors for a thousand years have been identified as Sinhalese. Some of my relatives have been obsessed with genealogies, not me!

    PART TWO
    .
Much better for Nagananda and others to use the word “Tamil”. The Tamils are proud of the objective fact (please Google) that theirs is the oldest extant language in the world. Our schooling was such that we were made to feel that “Tamil” was a bad word!
    .
I have made some comments here which I don’t want to repeat out of context.
    .
    https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/a-reply-to-sajiths-intimidation-at-badulla/
    .
The words were, in a sense, forced out of me by those who provided a context.
    .
Nagananda has to send his messages to the North and the Hill Country in Tamil. Each of us must do our bit! I look forward to reading more articles by you.

Is this the man who couldn’t do his math on annual growth, and then cringed when he realised he was projecting it at 20% per annum???

Lol.. that really would have been fun to see when the world’s best economies hit about 8%!!!

People, please understand fact from fiction, and don’t make decisions that will cost this country another 4 years of nonsense!

You may be referring to the glib recently made by Rohan Pallewatte. It is a glib only; It does not warrant us to ignore the initiative of few good men’s to evict 225+1

    Gupta,
Like GoRa, Nagananda also has a dual citizenship in Britain. This fact was revealed by the social media; not by himself. Only after the revelation, he declared that he is going to rescind British citizenship. This may not amount to much but when it is also revealed that all the campaign donations are going to his personal bank account, it is difficult not to question his qualifications to be called as one of “few good men”!

We need change and I hope the masses realise that. Can these two be worse than what we have had in the past few decades, I don’t think so. My only concern is that Naganada seems to lean towards the JVP and recently said he is willing to stand down in favour of AKD, if he is given certain assurances.

What are ALP or Nagananda’s policies to have good Governance ? Has he released a manifesto? How is he intends to solve tamils’ national question ? Does he support a secular state ? What are his economic policies ? Where does he stand, right left middle or behind monks ? Whoever supports Nagananda in CT including Vishnu Gupta does not reveal any of these and readers / public are kept in dark. Why ?

      Dear Maya;

“Whoever supports Nagananda in CT including Vishnu Gupta does not reveal any of these and readers / public are kept in dark. Why “.

First of all I am not a supporter of any individual but I am for changing the odious political process/system and the masters and the guardians of that process. It is not about Nagananda he is attempting for the first time in our modern history to nullify the process of establishing highly flawed democracy in the country. He has developed a detailed a constitution that wrest sovereignty away from oligarchy (gang of thieves consisting of all political leaders irrespective of their ethnicity and religion) and give back to the people of Sri Lanka. You may be pleasantly surprised to find answers to your questions. Please get a copy of Nagananda’s published documents and share with your family and friends.

I think these guys are basil/gota guys masquerading as champions of democracy. To break votes from UNP. Gota is suspect in contesting, as there can be supreme court challengers ,when he is nominated. Which can drag. Also icc can get involved. Sajith might contest from pohotuwa, Ranil from UNP. Rajapaksa wins both ways. He can bide his time for his son, than a PSTD Gota, who is unpredictable.

Sri Lankans still don’t understand the job of President, as one that is to rin an entire country. Such is the demand on its decision making scope.
A businessman who got lucky with a patent, or a customs officer who was only rocking the boat, have nothing else to show for the job, and this is a grave concern of this promotional article.
Veteran politicians not only in Sri Lanka, but from around the world have caused the chaos seen today in Sri Lanka and the ordinary man who had no clue about these issues, leaving ouy their complexities, are being told to pick a name from a list, and this is democracy.
This is where the media also have a moral role to speak on all sides of the story no matter what angle they are writing on.
This article should have highlighted the missing parts of those candidates for this most important job in the country and how we cannot afford to muddle up this choice. This article is a lame attempt to promote two candidates who do not have political backing, when the media does not have a moral right to be a promoter.
If these candidates do not have the finances to be voiced loud enough, then the struggle should have written about that aspect of why so much money is required for Sri Lanka’s elections. The value of this article was lost when it took a promotional turn and blinded to the negative aspects of these two blokes.
End of the day, this is all still democracy in theory.

“A businessman who got lucky with a patent, or a customs officer who was only rocking the boat, have nothing else to show for the job, and this is a grave concern of this promotional article.”

May be you are in the minority this time for thinking only Oligarchy should be in power, though they have continued to destroy our beloved nation and country in their grips. Think outside the box.

“This is where the media also have a moral role to speak on all sides of the story no matter what angle they are writing on.”

Humbug, you may be talking about media in some other truly democratic country not in Sri Lanka: Let me be specific without beating around the bush: The examples of Propaganda machines of various Oligarchs are
HIRU TV and Ada Derana for MR Gang
Siyatha, Daily Mirror for RW gang
    Sirasa SP gang
ITN, SLBC for whichever Oligarch comes to power through deceits and violation of rule of law

Colombo Telegraph has done its fair share and allowed unimpeded flow of ideas with dignity and in my view has not promoted any political campaign.

    Finally you have said:
“If these candidates do not have the finances to be voiced loud enough, then the struggle should have written about that aspect”

It is not about the money spent on the campaign, you should ask how the Oligarch leaders manage to accumulate so much wealth after entering into Sri Lankan politics.

Much as the intelligentsia are hungry for a political breakthrough, are the masses who are the majority water base want a change? Irrelevant of Nagananda or Pallewatte in the hustings there are only ‘few good men’ willing to confront the present status quo. Needs guts money blood sweat and tears. Let’s give the good gentleman a leg up. Anything is better than the kind of men put forward by the Major Political parties.

I consider this article is only one opinion of a citizen and respect the rights he has to criticize other parties and leaders and promote the others he want. But when you raise allegations against a person, especially on corruption, you should have evidence and if not it shows your credibility and professionalism. You say “JVP MPs are also party to luxury vehicle scandal that robbed billons from the national coffers”. On what basis you claim this way? All Sri Lankans know they are not steeling state money and they are the main force that fight against fraud and corruption. They brought the Bond scam to the light and still working hard in COPE in the parliament.
In the case of JVP national list member Ibrahim, he was not listed as a terrorist before the 2015 Election and even the Intelligence agencies had not known. JVP has already explained the background and their relation with Ibrahim. Now even Rajapaksa loyalist do not raise this allegation against the JVP but Guptha still do this.
Mr.Guptha, to raise the image of a person you prefe, please describe the work he or she has done and his or her qualities instead of slinging muds to others.

It is absurd to even contemplate sacking the 225 member Parliament and getting rid of the judiciary. Only a lunatic will believe this rubbish. The two are jokers in a new pack.
