Is Sirisena A Political Traitor?

By Granville Perera

Maithripala Sirisena has come up with his new version of “Thana Patiya and Madu Waligaya”. He has exposed his true intentions OF STAYING IN POWER with his now infamous speech at “Sathviru Heritage” function held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, organized to transfer ownership of houses and properties to the security divisions. What has made him change overnight? Does he want his second term or is there a threat of a coup by Gota and his merry men, or a decent enough kickback offered by the Sri Lankan Viktor Bout, the Senadipathi of Avante Garde fame. He has found fault with independent commissions acting independently.Maithripala

It is pertinent to recall the speech made by our globally acclaimed head of Good Governance in Sri Lanka, President Maithripala Sirisena’s at the Anti Corruption summit in London on the 12th of May 2016.

“I thank Hon. Mr. David Cameron, Prime Minister for inviting me to attend this Anti-Corruption Summit in London. I consider this summit a significant step to combine our collective efforts to fight corruption that is wide spread all over the world.

Corruption is one of the factors that promote political violence and other forms of human rights abuses. Sri Lanka went through such a stage during the previous administration. The people reacted strongly against corruption by changing the corrupt administration by the power of the ballet in January 2015 at the Presidential election and again at the Parliamentary election in the August 2016.

The people acting democratically got rid of the corrupt leaders and their supporters. The current national unity government consists of the two major political parties in the parliament under my leadership and the other led by Prime Minister Hon. Ranil Wickramasinghe. We were elected to office on the policy platform of democracy, good governance and rule of law. Therefore, we consider our prime duty to root out of corruption from the country. We have already taken significant measures for this purpose. I am happy to inform this forum that with the introduction of the 19th amendment to the constitution I handed over most of the executive powers to the Parliament except those powers Supreme Court decided cannot be transferred. However, even under this limited situation as a demonstration of my commitment to transparency, accountability and the rule of law and my firm determination to route out corruption I established an anti-corruption secretariat, a special presidential commission to investigate. I also appointed a commission to investigate allegations of bribery and corruption. The Right to Information Act has been presented to the Parliament and the National Audit Act will be presented to the Parliament shortly. All these institutions are working satisfactorily. A special division within the police titled Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) was established to expedite investigations on major financial crimes. They have been given all necessary facilities to carry out their duties. They have already commenced flings of several major financial charges. We note with appreciation the support and cooperation already extended to Sri Lanka by several countries including UK, USA , India and Switzerland as well as the World Bank to strengthen the investigative agencies regarding the stolen assets. We are in the process of seeking information and assistance to trace them . We are happy that summit proposes to establish an International Anti- Corruption Centre, all of us as leaders need to act collectively to strengthen our own law enforcement agencies to track the corrupt and recover the proceeds of corruption.

Sri Lanka is fully committed to such firm action. Thank You.”

The above noble words have been flushed down the toilet with his statement of 12th October 2016 where he questions the right of independent commissions to act independently. The tragedy is, Sri Lankan politicians will find it hard not to poke their fingers in to independent investigations when it hurts them, especially when their children run riot at nightclubs, and commit murder.

What has changed this once loved president who is beginning to expose his true self? The greed for power is evident with his abuse of presidential privileges and his ever-growing extravagance at the presidential secretariat. His frequent travel with large entourages is reminiscent of the Rajapaksa extravagance. The abuse of staff and filthy language used by the president at the presidential secretariat will not be accepted in the Mariyakade slums. Power corrupts, and what has changed this simple Grama Sevaka from Polonnaruwa? He is getting drunk with power and has become a quick learner to follow in the footsteps of the most corrupt Rajapaksas. First, it was the appointment of his own Brother Pallewatta Gamaralalage Kumarasinghe Sirisena to the high position of Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom to pocket some millions a month in to his own bank accounts. Millions more have been moved in to the pockets of the Presidents “Chatu” and her husband in advertising contracts. In the shortest possible time, he is beginning to outdo what the Rajapaksas did over a decade of unprecedented corruption. Now, he fears that he would be brought before the financial investigation units, should he be pushed out of his presidency after his first term. He announced upon his election in January 2015 that he would not seek a second term. He may now be even fearing an impeachment.

He has also exposed himself of being the person who has been guarding the interests of the Rajapaksa family and their loot by derailing the investigation process into corruption, the Thajudeen and Lasantha murders and other financial irregularities that has cost the country over 80 billion. He has already forgotten that the UNP elected him to the high office without the support of even 20% of the SLFP vote. Now, he fears that his SLFP lot would be placed 4th if the Local Government election is held with the UNP expected to lead, Mahinda Rajapaksa in second place, the JVP third and Sirisena’s SLFP in the fourth place.

He has dug his own grave by bringing in all the rogues from the former regime of Mahinda Rajapaksa in to Ranil Wickremesinghe’s cabinet so that the SLFP would not break up. His selfish tryst with the corrupt has brought the politics of Sri Lanka back to the wheeler dealing days of the Rajapaksa regime. The selfish Sirisena has sacrificed the people’s rainbow revolution.

It is time that Prime Minister takes the bull by the horn and takes Sirisena head on. The President has been shooting his mouth out of turn far too many times and has made the PM look a fool. The ever-gentlemanly Ranil has not opened his mouth in public. Its time that the UNP took the reins and brought Sirisena and his 40 thieves to justice or suffer the same fate of the 2002 UNP government.

      Fedrik:

There are few comments from people like you all of whom look like INGOs or western agents waiting for the demise.

Libya was the most devloped country in North america and people were happy. They destroyed the country in order to steal the gold and Silver the country had. West also had billions of dollars in accounts. they took that money too.

Likewise you Sirisena does not have education and intellectual background for good governance.Mahinda is now laughing to him but he does not understand it or not doing anything to stop MR’s popularity among the foolish villagers.

Its time CBK, PM Ranil and FM Mangala take command of the coalition before FCID,CID,CBC… and other independent depts. like Judiciary
& Police go under the command of the President and that will be the end of ‘Yahapalanaya’ Govt. and beginning of dictatorial rule and
the rest to happen is well known to the public.

PM Ranil should come out of his hiding and make a policy statement
to the public on the current issues where state is trying to protect
    the undesirables of the country.

Native Vedda: You say “Sihala Buddhists”. Now who fights for “Tamil/Buddhists”. Shouldn’t we incorporate that term too in the Constitution? To do that, do you want them (Tamil/Buddhists) to form another front, perhaps “Ulagam Tamil/Buddhists”. Any takers?

      Douglas

The bigots in other communities equivalent to Sinhala/Buddhists are as follows:

      Tamil/Saivaites
      Latin/Christians or the born again
      Arab/Islamists
      Zionists

I don’t think the Tamils in Tamil Nadu who follow Buddha’s teaching call themselves Tamil/Buddhists.

If President Sirisena is a honest person who respects the constitution and respects all those who voted for him for a Yahapalana Government, he would have done the correct thing by speaking to the Speaker who is the head of all Independent Commissions. President has no constitutional right to interfere in matters of independent commissions. We are not happy with the progress of some of the independent commissions which are dragging their feet but law of the country and the constitution has to be respected at all cost. If the President violates the constitution who is to say that a civilian cannot violate the same constitution?

War heroes should be protected .thats what the British priminister has said as well. Sunday mirror . Don’t forget the 30years of war who started it. Prabakaran said the Sinhala memory lasts only one week.all politicians made money ever since independence .

Native Vedda: Did you note the number of “Thumbs Down” the moment I mentioned “Tamil Buddhists”. Does that mean “Buddhism” is ONLY for Sinhala people. I mentioned it purposely to see the reactions of the “Sinhala Buddhists”. You too contributed by telling the Tamils in South India who follow Buddhism would not call themselves “Tamil/Buddhists”. This is what I call “Tribalism” in the combination of race and religion. It is not that easy to manage this Tribalism and bring about reconciliation.

Our President is NOT a Political Traitor.

    On the contrary,

He is holding true to pretty much every President that came before (especially the more recent ones) AND he is ensuring continuity by becoming more and more like them every day

Yahapalana Daham, The First Son, despite his Facebook postings to HIS predecessor Namal (anyone remember that ?), is also ensuring that continuity which is so important to the political well-being of a Nation with Presidential/Political Offspring Entitlement, PSD-anchored beatings of the public and doubtless, more to come in the future

    Granville Perera, you write,

    Is Sirisena A Political Traitor?…..

Well, wasn’t that answered sometime ago, when the butter-won’t-melt-in-my-mouth Sirisena stabbed his unsuspecting patron in the back after enjoying a tasty unforgettable hopper supper together in the heady days of conspiracy.

But Sirisena is hardly exceptional. Every top echelon Sri Lankan politician is an opportunist and will gladly be a traitor when the main chance beckons.

Some may even say this is a universal condition.

As the English would say, using their newly minted lexicon, “Aiyo, Aiyo”.

This presidency was created by a man who did not need to rob a cent since he was wealthy in his own right. However, it is not suited for villegers or ordinary people. The power the position wields is too much for them to handle. It takes a special class of person to resist the temptations. Unfortunately Sri Lanka divested itself of such people thru war and the vote. The venerable Sobitha thero was right. He knew this will happen unless the office was abolished. Another chance missed and so we keep repeating history.

Sirisena performed treachery sometime ago. Granville’s ilk rejoiced it then. Why are they lamenting now? Did they expect anything different? However what Sirisena said was true.

My3 was not the choice of SLFP for president, he
was used to split frustrated SLFP votes and weave
them to UNP without breaking away from the party.
There was a possibility for Ranil to win the
presidency but UNP didn’t want to take a chance
and devised a sure strategy to share power with
the split group led by My3 + Rajitha + Champika
trio . The result , one goal achieved ! Raja was
sent to oblivion . My3 got the presidency and
Ranil became a working prime minister with powers.
Now all are happy in the paradise but something
somewhere is not fixed properly ? What is it ?
Somebody is dragging the feet to pushing the
fraudsters of the past regime to the wall ! Who
is that somebody ? Is it My3 or the My3 Ranil
combo ? I am very seriously doubtful that
My3 Ranil combo is more worried of a third party
winner that is going to be JVP out of this cat
and mouse game with the Rajas ! And the JVP
strategy too could be just that .

Our stupid president has forgotten that only a few months ago at the UNP convention he boldly said that it was the UNP which made him the President of the country. Now he has betrayed the UNP and the people of Sri Lanka by forcing Dilrukshi out of office. How much did Sirisena get paid by Avante Garde to let the scoundrels get out scot free. Isn’t it a disgrace that the people of Sri Lanka have not got on to the streets to remove this traitorous president from office. Why has the parliament not moved to impeach the President

I dont think he is an idiot

I think he is pretty smart
We now have Mahinda Rajapakse II
Soon, he too will be crowned King
Once more, we will have a Crown Prince
      and cardboard cutouts decorating Maradana
      Just like before

      How Wonderful!

If there are any idiots, then look to our PM, FM and those guys who engineered this thing to begin with

And let us give thanks !

“Once more, we will have a Crown Prince and cardboard cutouts decorating Maradana Just like before”

        I can see your anxiety.

However the practice didn’t start with Mahinda the great, if you revisit history, you would see that the heritage was established with the crowing of Dudley, then Siri Mao, Chandrika, Anura, ….

I think you have been in deep deep sleep for many years.

Sirisena’s days are numbered. He cannot live dangerously like this for ever. One by one all Sri Lankan’s are understanding the true nature of him and no wonder MR did not want to appoint him as the PM. RW must state where he stands and what he is going to do make things work for the development of the country. The other biggest issue is UNP not having a strong leader to take over from RW when his time is up. UNP is facing the risk of being taken over by lunatics like Champaka or SF in the absence of RW.
