ITAK Welcomes UNHRC Report On Sri Lanka

The Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) has announced that the report of the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner on promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka.

The ITAK, in a media release following a meeting of the Central Committee has ‘urged the Government of Sri Lanka to strictly adhere to the commitments it has made to the International community in bringing lasting peace and political solution to the national question’.

They have also appealed to the UNHRC and other international agencies to ensure that the UNHRC recommendations are taken seriously and implemented by the Government of Sri Lanka, as per its commitments.‘

The following is the full text of the media release:

The Central Committee of the Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchi which met today (24.02.2018) in Colombo welcomes the report of the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner on promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka.

We urge the Government of Sri Lanka to strictly adhere to the commitments it has made to the International community in bringing lasting peace and political solution to the national question. Furthermore, we appeal to the Government of Sri Lanka not to deviate from these commitments and deliver on the promises that the Government has made to both of the people of Sri Lanka and to the International Community.

We strongly endorse the recommendations made by the High Commissioner of the United Nations Human Rights Council and urge upon the member states to ensure a close and constructive engagement with the Sri Lankan Government. The ITAK/and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has constantly raised the issues pertaining to the repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, release of lands belonging to civilians, the issue of missing persons, release of political prisoners. The lethargic progress in addressing these issues has raised  serious concern about the genuineness of government’s actions among the Tamil People.

We strongly urge the International community to hold the Government of Sri Lanka accountable for the above-mentioned matters and to the recommendations made by the High Commissioner for United Nations Human Rights Council. In addition, we appeal to the Government of Sri Lanka to expedite its actions and to fully implement the cosponsored resolution without undue delay.

While expressing our appreciation to the High Commissioner of United Nations Human Rights Council, on behalf of the most affected Tamil community we urge that the office of the UNHRC and other International agencies and member states to ensure that these recommendations are taken seriously and implemented by the Government of Sri Lanka, as per its commitments.

That would be a fair deal. After all many areas outside the North has been colonised by Tamil speaking people i. e. Colombo municipality area 40% Sinhalese, 60% Tamil speaking people.

        Its a good idea.
When troubles erupt next time around your armed forces will have to bomb/shell the s**t out of the colonizers as well. What a brilliant idea.

Are you inviting strangers and neighbours to visit this island to grope the women folks? They would love it.

Treat all the people well you can keep all your foreign gropers away from your own women folks. However being an arrogant member of majoritarian mindset club I know its very difficult for you to know right from wrong and think responsibly and act accordingly.

No one is stopping preventing Sinhalese paying fair market value buying real estate and moving. What people are against is bringing thieves, rapists and village idiots that don’t bring any value.
Tamils have moved into Colombo and other areas but they have enriched where ever they moved economically or by knowledge.
Only thing I can tell the idiots is bring it on. You know what happened when you cut Tamils off public service it went to the dogs but the Tamils moved to the private sector or left the country and thrived. Tamils generally rely on their ability not the state.

          Burt,

If no one objects to Sinhalese paying fair market value and buying up the so called “Tamil” lands then first off the Thesavalamai law should be abolished for good.

Moreover, how have Tamils enriched Colombo economically or by knowledge? I would love to know about it.

Public service went to dogs not because Tamils were cut off from it. Rather it was by the enrolling of village idiots who had no knowledge of English or any contemporary affairs.

If Tamils were so good as you portray then there was no issue of them to be part of India. They should have out done almost every North Indian in every aspect of life. But as we know now that it is not the case.

Therefore, please Burt do not try to shove us the Tamil superiority crap. We don’t care if Tamils could turn iron to gold. All we have is a country which we try to improve the lives of it’s citizens by democratic means. If Tamils do not like to be part of that process they can leave us for good for any other country where they can “thrive”.

“Sinhalese want Sri Lanka exclusively because their ancestors have made this island to be what it is today.”

The problem is not with Sinhalese who are just like their fellow Tamil kallathonies from south India. Please tell us about the island, what it is now and how you managed to arrive there.

” From Anuradhapura to Colombo you can see the handy work of the Sinhalayas to prove it.”

Mostly artisans were brought from South India.
Even as recently as in 2013 the rock-cut Samadhi Buddha statue at Rambadagalla was carved out of rock by South Indian team of Sculptures, under the guidance of Master sculptor Muthiah Sthapathi.

            1. What is Thesawalamai? Tell us about its history. How did it stop Sinhalese or that matter others buying land? What are the principles attached to Thesawalamai law?

            2. When was the last time it was cited by anyone who thought Thesawalamai laws were relevant to their case?

            3. What are you going to do with Kandyan law?

            4. An old friend of mine from Jaffna tells me his land which is in a prominent part of Jaffna was once owned by Panditha Dharmakeerthi Tissa Thero of Nagavihare, Nainative from 1954 to 1956. Probably the thero would have made a neat profit from the land, owning it for just over two years.

              Native Veddha,

              1) Thesawalamai law is applicable on the “Malabar” Tamil inhabitants of the Jaffna peninsula and their descendants. Can’t you explain why did the Dutch added the prefix “Malabar” there? The prohibits anyone other than the descendants of the Malabar Tamils in Jaffna from buying up lands there. Why do we have to keep this 17th century law in the modern 21st century?

              2) To whose case?

              3) Kandyan law does not bar any individual from buying up country lands.

              4) Yes Probably. You should ask that from your friend. Moreover, if the Thesawalamai law is not practically applicable in current affairs there should be no problem in abolishing it.

I have counter questioned you. Hope you can answer these question with out side stepping. I need direct answers and no Bullshit as before.

Don’t display your ignorance in public. Tamil Nadu has a higher standard of living AND contributes more to the Indian econonomy than many North Indian states. For its 60 million or so population, it has a disproportionate number of car factories and other heavy industry, in addition to efficient agriculture. Why not go there and see with your own eyes instead of relying on info from the 1970 Lankadeepa?

Its about how a habitat is being destroyed by unwelcome irrigation projects and politically motivated colonization schemes. If you care to look at the Mahaweli closely my people had been displaced and habitats destroyed together with the environment all because some clever dick Sinhala/Buddhists decided the entire island belongs to them. Most farms run by dispersed unemployed people were loss making, chemically polluted and source of many diseases, …. Without government subsidies none will survive.

The government continues to subsidize its colonies. On the other hand the cost of destruction to the environment and people is considered as a worthy expenditure for their short term parochial agenda.

Sri Lankan Government should ask the UNHRC to provide concrete evidence to prove 40,000 civilians died during the last stage of the war against Demala terrorists. They will not be able to fool the international community forever. Truth will prevail!

“Sri Lankan Government should ask the UNHRC to provide concrete evidence to prove 40,000 civilians died during the last stage of the war against Demala terrorists.”

The Sri Lankan government/State should allow the UNHRC to set up its stalls in the country, to investigate, collect evidence, record/document, interview witnesses, interview/interrogate the perpetrators, stop the perpetrators nobbling witnesses, ………………………………..

Even 5 year olds understand the process.

      • 2
        2

        Native Veddha,

Would that mean UNHRC has no evidence as yet to prove their claim of 40,000 people being killed? This is a serious allegation. How can a international legal body accuse a legal government of killing 40,000 of it’s own citizens without hard evidence?

        • 2
          1

          Shenal

How do I know what evidence the UNHRC have on war crimes? Though numbers are important finding truth should be the ultimate aim far more important.

Say for instance if I agree/disagree on the stated figure would it in any make difference? However don’t underestimate the reach and resources of International Organisations and International Community, unlike the stupid people like you they have spy in the sky as well as spy on the ground.

Can’t UNHRC produce their irrefutable evidences so that Sri Lankan government will have no option other than accepting they have done war crimes?

              Shenal

Unlike you they cannot simply sling mud at every country and cannot carter to “whims and fancies” of everyone who want to punish the war criminals. Further they may want to confirm what information they have on file and search comprehensively to add more cases if they were not recorded.

Don’t waste your time asking these silly questions.

It also depends on their current position on Sri Lanka, in that respect Sirisena, UNP and Mangla have done a great job assuaging the intensity of demand for independent investigation. Dr Gota and and Dr Mahinda do understand and appreciate the three.

Remember in 1971 a large scale war crimes was committed during Bangladesh war of independence. In recent years many have been charged, found guilty and punished including by execution, this is after 45 years.

Therefore the actual war criminals cannot sleep peacefully.

    ITAK,
Enough of welcomes, appeals, and urging the GoSL for their commitments for a lasting peace and political solution to the national question.

While expressing your appreciation to the High Commissioner of United Nations Human Rights Council, on behalf of the most affected Tamil community and urging that the office of the UNHRC and other International agencies and member states to ensure that these recommendations are taken seriously and implemented by the Government of Sri Lanka, as per its commitments. Are you now talking about beyond March 2019?

But the HC has also repeated his call upon Member States to explore other avenues, including the application on universal jurisdiction that could foster accountability.

Why not ITAK call upon the Member States and to the HC to refer Sri Lanka to the ICC and or to a special tribunal?
Why not tell the international community, now nine long years after the war, that a home grown solution to this long drawn ethnic issues will never ever be possible under a majoritarian, chauvinistic Buddhist regimes, and that the only option is for the UN to conduct a referendum for the Tamils to decide their future destiny.

    Please be honest to yourselves.
