Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake handed over to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya the draft of an amendment to the Constitution that seeks to abolish the Executive Presidency.

Abolishing the Executive Presidency was a key election promise of President Maithripala Sirisena, but hopes of it being delivered were deflated when the Government brought the 19th Amendment which only pruned presidential powers.
President Sirisena has on occasion pledged to make good on his promise, but has also hinted that he has not ruled out contesting the next presidential election.
Originally, the 20th Amendment was to be about electoral reform, in particular replacing the current proportional system with a mixed system that retained features of it but allowing for a certain percentage to be elected through the first-past-the-post method.
