Kamala Harris, The Dems And Sri Lanka

By Kumar David

Prof. Kumar David

I was concerned that the Muslim community worldwide, progressives debating the Palestinian imbroglio, those who are not acerbic pro-Israeli in the US and our own Muslim community here in Lanka would be distressed by Biden’s choice of Kamala Harris as his running mate. “Where does Kamala Harris stand on Israel – in her own words” gives answers to many question. Regarding Lanka’s Muslims I was surprised to get a sober if resigned response from the Muslims I interacted with at a recent seminar. “A heavy pro-Israel bias is a pre-qualification any politician must have to run for office in the US” was their resigned response. That’s true though depressing but to get this softer line from Muslims was not what I was expecting.

So far as US international policy is concerned whether it’s the B-H team or the T-P team that wins will make only limited difference. There will be more significant domestic policy differences but don’t hold your breath. There will be zero difference in Middle East and trade policy, and very significantly China policy will be the same. There is bipartisan determination to slow down or roll back the rise of China. Both Dems and the GOP are fearful of the inevitable rise of China to global economic supremacy and to it’s climb up the strategic ladder. Pompeo may be a worst-case cold-war freak but there is bipartisan support for efforts to overthrow the Chinese state and to use Hong Kong as a Trojan Horse for striking deep. Remember how Berlin was used as a dagger to thrust into the heart of the USSR.

There will be differences in climate policy, repairing fences with Europe and some weak efforts to restore the Iran nuclear agreement though I am not sure of the last one. I expect significant revisions of domestic policy especially healthcare, but US domestic issues are not the concern of my column today. The gargantuan visible difference will be that an erratic, idiosyncratic, eccentric and narcissistic US president will be a thing of the past if the Dems win. America can wake up as though from a bad dream.

Returning to my Sri Lanka theme none of the local communities nor the bigger SL political picture will see any difference if Trump is defeated. The US has no real strategic interest in Lanka (modern technology has made Trincomalee and our location in the Indian Ocean militarily insignificant; the truly vital regional choke point is the Straits of Malacca) but the US will support India’s vital concerns. Any substantial strategic threat to India in the Island will be snuffed out promptly with US support and Chinese handwringing. But the US does have economic-strategic global interests all along the Chinese Belt-and-Road. China is forging ahead using its huge economic muscle to firm up its global clout. It knows it’s on course to becoming the economic superpower of this century and the US knows its response to the challenge has been too slow. Hence MMC etc is the US ‘belt-and-road’ answer. Our jokers over here will accept the $480 million, have no doubts about that.

Pushing the Muslims to the wall and provoking another 1983 is up to our benighted compatriots and leaders. In my view Gota does not hate Muslims in the way that JR loathed Tamils; his need is to mollycoddle saffron robes, Weera-Gamanpillars and the Viyathmaga racists. If rioting, arson and carnage starts, Gota may shoot; this is different from 1983. Certain classes of politicos and journalist will continue to irritate the Muslims of course but they will stay mostly indoors. Racists and rioters, including those in uniform are born-again cowards. If JR had allowed one battalion to let loose a single fusillade of grape shot in 1983, the riots would have fizzled out in half an hour. But he hated Tamils and wanted to teach them a lesson. Gota however does not want riots on his watch; it will finish off his image and undermine his mystique for keeps. Presumptive VP Kamala will be pleased because the US knows from bitter experience that tangling with the sons of the prophet is no cake walk.

The parents of KH’s newly minted Chief of Staff, Rohini Kosuglue (Koseoglu I understand is a name of Turkish origin), Wijeram and Shobhana Ravindran are of Jaffna origin. Wije was a few years senior to my buddy Jayantha at St Thomas and J is eagerly awaiting his invitation to tiffin at the White House – maybe masala vaddai and Jaffna coffee, you know the stuff that tastes like kothamali powder.

I am certainly not a fan of President Donald Trump but he has my whole heartfelt support for the stand taken by him to put down the yellow peril. China decimated Tibet, Xinjiang, Hong Kong etc., and wants to swallow Paracel Islands and unashamedly exploit local corrupt rulers wherever they can be found. It is an immense tragedy the stoic silence of the leaders of the Buddhist world towards the evil they did to His Holiness Dalai Lama. Wuhan virus is the gift to the world from China.

Where will Dalai Lama will be without China?
      Will anybody care?
      BTW
Does not Yellow Peril also include the Japanese (who were targetted in the 1980s) and the Koreans (almost destroyed in the early 1950s by the US)?
You should remind Donald Duck about it before he leaves the house that is white.

I am the recipient of many an email and WhatsApp messages boasting on the fact about to become the 2nd most powerful person on the planet, boasting about her Lankan roots.
It must be correct even though she is supposed to have been born in I think Tamilnadu or Delhi, India.
    \
As to her chief of staff, I remember her father representing S. Thoma’s College at cricket especially the Royal-Thomian.
These common traits both Being born as Ceylon Tamil’s may have helped in binding this partnership and hope it is doing well.

At the moment the racist yakkos are shellshocked are doing pooja after pooja visiting various kattadiya’s and devil dancers to ensure a Joe Biden defeat.

Let’s hope that the always sitting on their brains Rajapuka’s will be brave enough to by-pass the racist humbugs and hopefully have enough strength to resolve the 72-year-old cursed itch.?

I wish the Biden/Harris combination all the best to overcome the unscrupulous Donald Trump, whom I have always disliked even before he ever thought of becoming the president.

I think you refer to her previous Chief of Staff, when she was Attorney General for California. She is of Sri Lankan origin, and her father was a student of St. Thomas’s.

Kamala Harris was born in California, to a Jamaican father, and a mother who was from Chennai India, who were students in the US.

    Dear Kumar,
    .
Thanks for the realism, and for continuing to have the courage to say things like this publicly.
    .
Yes, we should all be happy that Kamala, an immigrant from our part of the world, may actually be POTUS by 2024. She’sclearly on track for that, and if it happens it will represent progress.
    .
However, I’m quite sure that she will have to be an American before anything else. If we are realistic in this way, we can get somewhere; if we try to hide our roots and interests, we will not only be hypocrites, but also will be people who have nothing to offer.

How does one acquire this ability to foresee the future and read into other people’s minds? Even in far off lands!
    Any help?
Election after election astrology has proved to be totally ineffective.
What methodology this Professor is adopting could probably be helpful.
The professor predicted 51% for his JVP and returned with 3%!
Not a single f***** could predict the coming of the Covid or going of the Elephant.
(It looks like anti Rajapaksa hatred is translated into ‘predictions’ and published on CT, be it a calamity for entire Sri Lanka (like 1983) if that screws the Sinhala Buddhists.)

It is humiliating to see the country that aspires to become well developed nation now suffers from regular blackouts/power cut, ………… What is your strongman single handed Gota doing about it? Couldn’t the 15,000 omnipotent Army Generals fix it?

There is an alternative way of supplying electricity to the nation. Get your unemployed/unemployable 400,000 soldiers on stationary bicycles on stands and ask them to peddle them, hopefully the bicycle dynamos can generate sufficient electricity to power the country.

If the army lacks manpower, get the 60,000 strong saffron brigades to join them. Bicycle Dynamo’s can be connected to national grid.

The 15,000 Generals and all Mahasangas need good whips to motivate 460,000 patriots.

While they toiled and died in those estates you lazy bums have had luxury life from the income they generated in those Estates, under appalling working and living conditions.

Kamala Haris is not going to make any difference, except boosting Tamil Morales.

Most probably, it will be a closely contested election.

But if Joe Biden wins, will it make any difference in policy

Or it will be the same under different names. ?

There will be differences in many issues and policies. The unwavering support that American leaders shower on Israel will remain the same, they will ignore the plight of the Palestinian people, and send billions of dollars to their occupier, and land thief. The occupation could have ended a long time ago had the US upheld their policies regarding human rights, and stopped the aid and deadly weapons going to Israel, who uses them to kill unarmed civilians who protest their decades of suffering.

Trump has isolated the US from it’s old allies, and favors the nations where his golf courses and hotels are. He also, together with his son in law have cozy relations with Saudi Arabia and the UAE, for their own personal benefits. He admires and sides with dictators and strong men, as he has some sick fascination for them.

As for Sri Lanka, much as we like to think we are important in the broader spectrum of international interests, no American leader from either party puts us in the no.1 priority list. In fact we are away down.
Kamala Harris is American first, and will act that way. She has already criticized Modi’s policies (deservedly so), so I doubt she will bestow favors to India so readily as some Indians think she will.

Even if one born to Sri Lankan Tamils becomes President of the USA, there will be no benefit to Sri Lankan Tamils.
Even the seemingly crazy President DT is not taking personal decisions. Think of the number of occasions when he had to go back on his loose talk.
Election of Obama was used to the advantage of the US in its African affairs, but the Africans learned fast.
Tamils may be slower to learn.

Many Americans will be voting for normalcy. It has been four years of scandals, investigations, obstruction of justice by the Trump White House, by firings and refusal to cooperate with investigations, sky high corruption by a corrupt family, all while projecting their crimes on others. Trump supporters have accepted unethical and moral corruption by a president, that they would never have had this been a Democratic President. Paying off a porn star to silence her, secretive dealings with America’s enemy no. 1 for personal gain, trying to conspire to obtain dirt on opponents in Russia, Ukraine, and even China, the firing of many Watchdogs so that crimes will not be detected, the soliciting of business by the entire family from the White House, and a corrupt president including trying to get the UK to move their golf tournament to his golf course in Scotland to make money, over 20,000 lies (fact checked) by a disgraceful liar, and most of all Trump’s incompetence to control a terrible pandemic, by calling it a hoax, recommending injecting disinfectant into bodies, and untested drugs, all seems to be okay with them. Over 170,000 American died making America no. 1 in the most deaths worldwide. Trump politicized a pandemic.

      Contd.

The Trump family have enriched themselves from the Oval office, but Americans many never know how much, since Trump refuses to release his tax returns something all others President have done for decades, while in office.

How naive must one be to keep believing a man who blames all others including the media, lies, and never takes responsibility for anything?

It will take years to undo the damage done by this man, including around the world.

KD is just an idiot when it comes to his political predictions. He is a semi-racist commie.

People like Kamala Harris do not care about the Sri Lankas or its Tamils plight. She is well known in California to look after her own self. Complete self-serving witch.

The likely election of the Dems will come with the traditional BS of human rights talkers even though they never actually care about these things. Given the unpredictability of US electorate regardless of polling Biden winning is not a given by any means,

KD says US is not interested in Sri Lanka. They surely are. if not why do they still keep dangling the rotten MCC carrot for this long. Their interest is to foil whatever interests China has. and it is hard for them to do it from Diego Garcia. They may try the Maldives if they cant get to Sri Lanka. But aligning with the vacillating US is surely a recipe for disaster.

Senator Kamala lost primary but now overshadowing Presidential candidate Joe in the media.

“Remember how Berlin was used as a dagger to thrust into the heart of the USSR. “ I don’t remember that. What was it? But, do you remember USSR scratching on all faces around Eastern Europe and at last, by that same habit, taking the sword, the Afghanistan, and pricking on its chest?

Those who don’t understand American Administration write all on their own imagination. When Democratic Hillary was the State Secretary, Old King had so many ailments and at last conducted his election two years early. But when Democratic John Kerry became the Secretary, Sec Kerry wiped off the OISL report, forced Prince Zeid to resign from UNHRC and allowed Ranil on his own way to sell the Hangbangtota harbor. Sinhalese lighted fire crackers for President Trump victory against Hilary, but achieved no significant benefits, other than America allows King to cancel American citizenship. Even that is only Ranil’s achievement.

” modern technology has made Trincomalee and our location in the Indian Ocean militarily insignificant “ That not any military, scientific-technological or political evaluation. In other words, if Prof. Kumar says US is ready to throw Lankawe into the hand of China and walk away, that nothing but a joke. US still have about a 1000 stations around the world. Unless otherwise, unlike breaking Rajeev’s back in Lankawe, if PM Modi gets much larger branding on his buttock from Lankawe, India’s greed to manage Lankawe will not go away. This will be a ever present China Wall to NATO or America to fix Lankawe. Last time President Xi Jingling sent a message, through Galwan River Valley, to Modi that if he walks into south, Lankawe, China will walk into India. In future, India will watch its step. That will open Lankawe from India’s protection against West.

I don’t think China with all it’s might can defeat India in a straight all out war. Russia hitherto was a neutral player in the stand off between China and India now it has become a firm ally of India, following the Chinese territorial claim of the Russian far eastern city of Vladivostok. Your statement that China will walk in to India is the biggest joke I have heard recently. Contrary to what you have written China may loose Tibet to India if they are not careful. USA, Russia, Japan, Vietnam, EU, Australia , The Philippines are all powers who have an axe to grind with China and they will rally Behind India to dismember China if China becomes adventurous.

In addition to the external threats, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Xinjiang, Tibet and possibly some other regions will become the base for foreign invaders in to China. Don’t forget there care many regional conflicts within China, these fault lines will unseam China in the event of a powerful enemy waging an all out war against Communist auto cratic China. US , India on their own or jointly launch an attack on a country like China which has economic power but seriously lacks institutions that are accountable to it’s people may collapse in the event of an External invasion.

Regardless of Kamala Devi Harris (grand daughter of Mr Gopalan from Manipay, Jaffna) attitude towards issues in the Indian ocean around the bay of Bengal I like the idea that she will hopefully become VP of the USA. Often, such children of migrants can be more racist than the White supremacists. However, regardless of the fact that they will not help the Tamil cause in any way, its good to see politicians of colour in the highest places on Earth.

    Dr. KD,

One of the things that I disliked about Obama, even though I supported him, was that he too genuflected to the AIPAC ( American-Israel Public Affairs Committee), just as most US politicians do. Only Bernie Sanders didn’t kowtow to them. Because the AIPAC and the pro-Israel lobby usually attack anyone who doesn’t do so as anti-Semitic. Sanders himself is Jewish, with Polish ancestors who perished in the Holocaust. So it won’t work with him. He also has considerable courage to consistently speak for ‘democratic socialism’ in this center-right country where any form of socialism is taboo .

By the way, the last name of Rohini is spelled Kosoglu. She was chief-of-staff to Harris when the latter was senator. While campaigning for election, she has been a senior advisor/aide. It remains to be seen whether she will be the COS if Harris becomes VP. The President often has a high degree of control over a VP’s staff selection, so it may not be Harris’ decision alone.

Lankawe Rapist Army fought world’s most powerful freedom fight-rebel group, LTTE, Fought the smallest Corona virus. But failed to fight when in 2013, when its 50 computers, including Media Center of the Defense were hacked. Its said the computer hacking from China comes from their Army’s special unity who handles breaking operating systems security. Now the Power & Energy Minister has placed the rapist Army to guard the electricity too. We don’t know how success will the rapist Army on that. But there are suggestion Aanduwa may need up to a $1B to fix the damages to the system. One time Israel and US got together and got into Iran Uranium enriching centrifuges and caused them to run at unlimited Revolutions per Minute. It delayed the Iran program by years and costed in billions. Generators produced excessive voltage and the Grid lost power. But why?

The geopolitical importance of South India and Sri Lanka has grown in strength since the days of KM Panikkar propounding his views. Andaman is certainly growing into a weighty choke point with the unprecedented growth of China and the never imagined magnitude of shipping in south, south east and far east Asia.

In this context US, Japan and India will grow into a formidable force. Three muscles are mightier than one and a fourth, Australia will add muscles of steel.

Once again the “Unrepentant Marxist” (his words) shares his worldview with us as seen through his distorted Marxist lens.
    *
    It’s not a pretty picture!
    *
Even a broken clock is right twice a day but our Marxist writer has been unable to achieve even this level of accuracy with his predictions! See his predictions about the recent elections – enough said!
    *
Judging by his continuous praise and obvious admiration for the PRC – I have him pegged as a Maoist. Perhaps he would clarify this for us?
    *
Of course he choses to ignore the fact that the Chinese have unleashed COVID-19 on the World – and hid the truth aided by the WHO.
    *
In case your wondering about this – Dr. Tedros (who isn’t actually a medical Doctor at all) was a former Marxist revolutionary in Ethiopia. A number of African countries refuse to have anything to do with him as a result. Good for them!
    *
We recently had the 31st Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre – the PRC at it’s finest! If you’re not old enough to remember this please research this – shows the true face of the PRC.
    *
The truth is the PRC is one of the most oppressive, brutal, and evil regimes in human history. Anyone defending these people needs to be challenged on this.

You disagree? (as is your right) – please back up your opinion with evidence.
        *
As for “the inevitable rise of China to global economic supremacy” – that’s just laughable. Try looking at their debt levels – the whole Economy is built on a foundation of sand and will come crashing down. I should add China’s Economic growth numbers are made up – a fact they openly admit.
        *
Then there is the payback for COVID-19 where the whole World joins forces to put these people back in their box.

          Uk Citizen,

“Biden/Harris are a complete joke and everybody knows it. Only the idiot left will vote for this -which in reality is a tiny fraction of the country.”

It shows how little you know about the US. Unless there is some black swan event before the election in 72 days, Trump is going to get a shellacking. Your view from the UK is muddled.

This country, though traditionally center-right, has been moving left slowly for the past 30-40 years. The Republican party is a party of swindlers and bandits, with Steve Bannon being the latest grifter to be indicted. It is the low-information, low-educated voters in the US who elected Trump. They will try again but the abject failure to contain the Covid-19 virus will work against it. The energy on the other side is too high for the bandits to slip through like the last time.

My view is from the edge of Wilpattu National Park.
It might not even be as tight race as Trump/Clinton.
Trump has the edge to win.

Initially I thought, the whole Covid thing would kill Trumps chances. Little did I know/read support for Trump in spite of all the mistakes made in containing Covid.

The Biden/Kamala is not a good combination.
The African Americans, even the women are not going to vote for Kamala. Not even African American women. I doubt they will turn up for the polls.

            The reasons.

The only scientific way of predicting is to use polls. A poll of polls conducted by 538 and also by CNN, The Economist, and others who use the right methodologies, points to 72–90% chance for a Biden win vs 10–28% chance for a Trump win. Of course 28% is a high enough probability for things to change over the remaining 2+ months. But that is a more conservative estimate from 538 in order to eliminate the kind of surprise that happened the last time. Beyond that, your arguments are pure speculation and dart throwing.

You fail to recognize that the anger even in the center-left against Trump is so high that many of us feel like physically beating up any Trump supporter we come across. Imagine the energy on the far left then. The Trump enabling mafia is going to learn a painful lesson; for the unpardonable sin of foisting Trump on the country, they will be banished from power for 20–25years; society will do everything possible, such as eliminating the filibuster and then even trying to abolish the electoral college for a straight majority decision, to keep the depraved weirdos, snake oil salesmen and rascals out of power.

            Agnos,

Post 2008 Financial Crisis the guys I read have been warning of Financial Collapse of the US. If you think the stockmarket is the Economy you are sadly mistaken. It is being propped by trillions injected by the Fed.

I thought it would be a War in the mid-east that would get the dominoes falling. Turned out a real black swan, the Covid Virus .

Injection of trillions, low Fed Interest rates almost free (now zero rates, i.e free) helped the stock market soar and insiders to take their money of the table. Middle class Tax payers, Pension funds, the small retail stock buyers are left holding the bag.

Note in the article below, not mentioned the US, as was clear it was going to collapse.

I dont think any of the changes will happen, regardless, whether it is Trump/Pence or Biden/Kamala. The US is well on its way to being a failed state.

              Long time no see.
Thanks for raising the intelligence level of comments significantly.
As for me, I do not think that who the next President will make no difference to the world at large, but I like to be informed.

I never said anything about the stock market or the economy. I was never a fan of the Fed money printing for every crisis, which then leads to huge bubbles.

U.K citizen, OMG, though I agree with your opinion , you be prepared for an insult, from some PRC members of Lankan origin. (they kind of think and behave like real PRC squad). There are some interesting observation in our virtuous disciplined land. 1) power cut because of Grid Breakdown , this Made in China soon will enter records book, and the excuse this time is, it is hybrid (solar/coal ). I feel pity for Lankans who are unable to see the positive aspects in events outside of Lanka, due to the simple fact there has been none in Lankan political history. KH,s mother left to the U.S alone as early as in 1960 because of the opportunity she got to study at Univ.California,Berkeley. She went on to get her Doctorate and become a cancer researcher. She then married another migrant from Jamaica, and adopted them as her second family. Today her daughter is nominated for potential VP post. Same with Obama too. This is possible only in land which gives way to others. Not in a land where own people are considered enemies and chased away.

Right now America has a leader who has waged a war with immigrants, has called them rapists, criminals, and other derogatory names, have snatched babies from their mother’s arms, and put them into cages, for months, and they have suffered with neglect, has stated he wants immigrants from caucasian nations, and has deported many kids who were born in the US and grew up there. He has gone against everything the country stood for.

I don’t like Marxists, Maoists or any other brand of Communist.

I believe the body count is somewhere around 125 Million in the 20th century as a result of this dangerous, toxic ideology. None of them want to talk about this for some reason…

I like this writer’s analysis: largely correct. I applaud Kamala’s nomination, an achievement for a racist country like the US. However, her record in California as Attorney General was atrocious. She put so many African Americans and people of color in jail. I hope Sri Lankans will not expect too much from a Biden-Harris administration. Biden has already promised going back to Obama regime. That regime paved the way for Donald Trump. I call the Democrates as “other Republicans”. The US is largely a racist country. It will take another century to transform the US.

Things could change after the US loses its prime position as the #1 global superpower (which will be much sooner than a century).
Racism is not in one’s blood. It is contextual as well as induced by vested interests.

I must confess the instant dislike of Prof. Kum’s article because of persons’ ethno-religious references. But the reality is that it does play a part in politics. Although it is reported that President Trump stating that Kamala Harris not US born, a qualification for one to become President, the chances are that he might retract as he did in the case of President Obama. Kamala’s career record is in the web. It is a rise in one’s career, steady at first but a huge jump from a state Attorney General to the Senate of the US. Perhaps she might become the US Vice President if Biden wins and our Astrologer friends might say that she has the “Raja Yogaya” to be the President. To my distaste, there are some in Sri Lanka who say that in view of the lineages of Kamala’s and her Chief of Staff it would be unfavorable for the present regime in Sri Lanka if Biden wins. But I am told that Kamala has got on well with persons of Sri Lankan origin with all sorts of ethnicities when she was the Attorney General of California.

The same Lankan origin PRC members will claim that poisoning the Russian opposition politician is right, and what North Korean Dictator does to his own people too is right. If you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas. For those few Latin experts in CT, ” qui cum canibus concumbant cum pulicibus surgent”. The Lankan saying is when your house is up on flames , you look at your neighbors which has caught fire, so to calm down.

Could an intelligent person advise me of the link between “He that lieth down with dogs shall rise up with fleas” and the supposed Lankan (Tamil/Sinhala) saying “when your house is up on flames , you look at your neighbors which has caught fire, so to calm down”.

As a Sri Lankan, selfishly, I consider Republicans are good for SL. Trump is a straight speaking president. He does not have Regime Change policies with the exception of that in Iran. That also is influenced by his SIL. He did not like Jews before the union of his daughter took place. The core issues of his actions are valid and justified. He may be a bit crude and may not act presidential. DEMS are corrupt and have created untold misery around the world. George Bush especially, was a good man. Cannot say the same about Cheney and the clowns. GB stood by them and took the fall. We should pray that DT will return as the Prez. this time around too. He is no fool as the media is trying to portray him as. Kamala is a half hearted offering by the DEMS trying to make her pass as a Black. She is not a Black. Susan Rice is if they really wanted to. Obama in real terms is not an American Black either. Republicans, the party of Lincoln, was the party who did the most reforms for the American Blacks. By god, JFK brought the world to near extinction.

Whatever the President says who decides what he does?
Trump has regime change policies in Nicaragua and Venezuela as well, and now Belarus too. No better no worse than his predecessor.

UK Citizen, as long Biden/KH are concerned I agree with Agnos and Ashan , who seems to be living there. Nancy seems to be the right example Agnos was quoting. I will repeat this again, which I had written else where. Recently a nursing practitioner was found in a heated debate with her ER colleagues (my friend is one of the ER physician who witnessed ) defending Trump. When asked why she thought he was a better candidate , her reply was the recent relief cheque send by treasury carried Trump,s signature and she believes Trump is actually donating out of his pocket ( the guy who avoided paying due tax). Nancy (hope there is no twins ) you sure are not alone .
