LAKBIMAnEWS Cartoon Controversy: ‘Women And Media’ Urges Editor To Apologize

By Colombo Telegraph

“The cartoon violates all ethical principles of journalism and media expression not only in Sri Lanka but globally. There is an accepted form of visual journalism in commenting on current social, economic, cultural and political issues within and between countries. In this cartoon, however, the newspaper has allowed for gross sexism and crudity to override any form of civility in journalistic communication. WMC urges the Lakbima newspaper, especially its editor to apologize for the publication of this extreme and totally unacceptable cartoon which is derogatory to women and women politicians.”  the Women and Media Collective wrote to LAKBIMAnEWS editor.

      Manmohan Singh should not meet Rajapassa while he is on his private visit to India this week – the nepotistic regime must be treated like the pariah it is!
      India should not worry about China’s influence cos Lankan people are as fed of of Chinese ‘aid’ which are loas that corrupts and props up neopotistic and corrupt and militatist regime like the Burmese junta

      Is Manmohan in the cartoon star gazing or seeing the haven or heaven? Can some one please give him a torch light. If only Jayalalitha can piss, Manmohan will need an umbrella, but sometimes the turban might suffice. Drinking urine in the Indian culture as revealed by a former President in public was news then. MR being represented by Sri Lanka, from the size of Jayalalitha she can easiliy shove whole of MR inside her with ease, like the woman who saved a sack of corn in a famous joke. This is the light side of the cartoon as I despice all these characters.

        The LTTE are not driven by any paarciultr religious reason, per say. They might just happen to be hindus, by and large. So I would not classify that as hindu terrorism’. You should’nt get so defensive about the muslim terrorists’. Noone wants to attack muslims or islam. They condemn the terrorists. There are a few people who might have linked terrorism and islam by mistake, and that can only be clarified if every civilian muslim openly condemns jihadi terrorism- without any sympathy or justification for it. As for the LTTE, the tamils in Lanka have to condemn it, to eliminate it.

    Showing a person eagerly looking at a woman’s genital is not an artistic expression, but a sign of a psychosomatic disorder of the persons who has drawn and approved it. The Editor and the cartoonist should be advised to consult a Psychiatrist.

    We don’t deny freedom of expression for people with psychosomatic disorders’ But an editor of a professional news publication should not treat all its readers as people with psychosomatic disorders.

    Nimanta

    Has a case of selective emotional outbursts. He can only feel emotions for the Sinhalese when they are mobbed.

    Why not for the Tamils who have been burned alive in their hundreds in Sri Lanka.

    In his fascism, he is quite O.K to digrace women’s genitals to get his fascist views across.

    The NGO, “Women and Media Collective” is highly agitated over the cartoon. They have not seen the page 6 of the same paper which describes the horrendous situation our women, Children and men under went in Welankanni in India last week. The picture of the story explained how Jayalalitha’s supporters have attacked an innocent child who is having a bandage in his head.

    This clearly shows the hypocrisy of Dr.Sepali Kottegoda. Why did not Sepali condemn this horrendous attack on our children and women? Why she is worried out a useless cartoon? Why Sepali did not asked Jayalalitha to condemn the attack? This clearly shows how NGOs operate and how they forget issues if they cannot make money.

    Brutal Rajapaksa Regime see women play only 2 roles in Sri Lanka society: 1. Wife. 2.Whore.

    There is no equality for women or minorities… Equality always promised but never realized…

    Impunity for rapists is a matter of fact.

    21,458 children and women had been abused or raped during the last four years, UNP parliamentarian Rosy Senanayake said yesterday.

    Addressing a news conference in Colombo, she said that there was a rapid deterioration in the law and order situation, but President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who had made an election pledge to provide security for children and women, had done nothing to stop the slide, she said, adding that that had been quoted as saying he could not send the police into people’s homes.

    This year alone 1,700 child rape cases had been reported and the figure in 2011 was 1,619. Every day, around three to four girls were raped. During the last one year 600 children had been raped in Jaffna, she said.

    http://www.island.lk/index.php?page_cat=article-details&page=article-details&code_title=60860

    In the North it reached gargantuan portions. Raping former women-prisoners is shockingly normal as none of raped victims even dare to complain due fear for her life or the lives of her father, mother , her children, her sisters and her brothers..

    Sri Lanka military occupying the country of Eezham Tamils is routinely engaged in repeated sexual abuse of the former female members of the LTTE to see them pregnant by the Sinhala soldiers, in the model of former Yugoslavia, news sources citing a number of cases and medical professionals told TamilNet. While Radha D’Souza views the Tamil struggle “as one of the most significant movements since the end of the Vietnam War,” the former US Deputy Secretary of State and a current ICG trustee Richard Armitage in Oslo last year was harping on the unawareness of the world on the happenings in the island. The genocide is meant to be so by the architects, and the Akashi visit last week viewing ‘rehabilitated’ female cadres was another effort to keep the on-going genocide under the carpet, political observers in the island said.

    Many former female cadres of the LTTE are repeatedly abused with determination to make them pregnant either in detention or by ‘summoning’ them after the so-called release.

    When they refuse or not cooperate to the ‘summons’, their family members are harmed.

    Confirming the kind of genocide-intended pregnancies of ex-LTTE cadres, a senior doctor in the North said that he didn’t know what to do about it.

    A recent case that had come to him had an eight-month pregnancy. She is now handed over to the care of some nuns. “I don’t know what to do with most of the cases,” the doctor said.

    “There is no international system to protect them in the island or provide refuge outside,” the doctor further said, whose statement was also confirmed by a gender-related social worker in the island.

    Sexual abuses are committed at two stages on the ex-cadres, first in the internment camps and then after the so-called release, the feminist social worker said.

    The details of 2000 to 3000 female cadres who were captured by the SL military are not yet known. Whether they are alive or still kept in secret camps is not found in any local or international records. The numbers of those who were captured and released do not tally. Colombo says there are only around 600 left in detention. What had happened to the remaining, asked the social worker.

    The condition of senior female cadres is pathetic, the social worker said, citing reports of some released cadres. “Many have been seen in the detention camps, but we do not know what has happened to them,” the social worker said.

    In the second stage, abuses take place after the so-called release of the cadres. ‘Summoning’ them for interrogation and repeatedly abusing them has become a routine and a past time in the SL military camps now. This happens widely in the SL bases and intelligence camps of Vavuniyaa and Jaffna, and in the camps of Vanni, the social worker told TamilNet.

    In another recent incident in Jaffna, a young ex-cadre from Vanni wanted to hand over her 13-month old child to anyone who would take care of it. The child was a result of repeated abuse of the woman by the ‘interrogating’ military but she wanted the child to live.

    Genocidal Colombo, elements clinging to it and their media, try to project the situation as a result of current social conditions and deviations among Eezham Tamils. But most of the cases are result of systematic and genocide-intended military abuses, observed the feminist social worker, agreeing with the doctor that there is no independent international mechanism operative in the island to protect the ex-cadres.

    * * *

    Commenting on the situation, TamilNet former war correspondent Mr. Lokeesan said that by the end of the war, young Sinhala soldiers of the genocidal military were given with pornographic material to induce them to commit sexual assault on the captured female LTTE cadres.

    A Sinhala military cultivated in this way is what that is going to stay in the country of Eezham Tamils, and the results could be imagined, he further commented.

    While China now builds permanent cantonments to the occupying Sinhala military, and India ‘trains’ the genocidal military in its bases, Mr. Akashi has come primarily to patch up relations between the West and Colombo, media reports from Colombo said.

    The genocidal war is perhaps perpetuated by a system and not by individuals. But the world needs an international people’s tribunal to identify the ultimate elements of such a system to remedy it.

    At least some individuals or institutions articulating for the system on the question of Eezham Tamils, such as the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, Robert Blake, Erik Solheim, Yasushi Akashi, Shiv Shankar Menon, his predecessor MK Narayanan and institutions such as the International Crisis Group (ICG), either coming forward or being made to answer to the world would immensely help the progress of human civilization, commented an academic in Jaffna.

    The politicians and political activists who continue to deal with this system, and in the process pressurized to take up a patch-up course have to consider twice before deviating from the grassroot realities, political observers in the island and in the diaspora cautioned.

    Meanwhile, those who whitewash the genocidal regime to the world with the hoodwink of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation, do many times more harm to humanity than the fault they had found with the LTTE, social workers in the island said.

    * * *

    The following are further direct reports to TamilNet by a few among the affected who decided to talk:

    “I don’t like to live here. I may be in peace if I go elsewhere. Otherwise there is no option other than committing suicide with my entire family,” says a tearful ex-LTTE female cadre. She has become a wreck by continued sexual abuse in the name of summons and interrogations by the occupying Sinhala military.

    She was 6-months pregnant when she was released from the SLA internment camp, said her mother with a downcast face.

    “We went to an illegal medical facility for abortion,” her mother was sorrowful about it.

    The ex-LTTE female cadres have come to their worst point of predicament now.

    The occupying Sinhala military that summoned them earlier in the name of ‘monitoring and interrogation’, now openly summons them for its sexual needs, comments a social worker of an organisation for the emancipation of women in the North and East.

    Many don’t tell the truth about the sexual abuses. This may be due to the cultural stigma. So they keep the sufferings within their mind and sulk secretly. When the situation is perpetuated they are pushed to the end of committing suicide. Many try all possibilities to get out of the island, the feminist social worker said.

    The situation is the same for the so-called released female cadres, whether in Jaffna, Vanni or in the East, conceded another human rights worker in the island.

    * * *

    A female ex-LTTE cadre, Pallavi (name changed), told TamilNet of her experience when ‘summoned’ to a local camp.

    When ‘summoned,’ one has to first wait for hours in the camp, facing lewd comments coming from the Sinhala soldiers. Then, a low-rank officer would come for sexual assault in the name of ‘interrogation,’ followed by the higher officer, if he is in the ‘mood’. They behave totally in a sadistic way and it is very obvious that they get pleasure from our sufferings, Pallavi said.

    Some of those ‘summoned’ to the local camps used to be sent to regional camps as well as bases in the towns. The story is the same everywhere.

    The SL torture camp at Achchezhu in the Palaali base is a nightmare for former female cadres.

    The Achchezhu torture camp is famous for the ‘disappearances’ of thousands of Tamil youth since 1996. People in Jaffna call the camp as the Slaughter House (I’raichchi-kadai). Sexual assault is a simple matter at this camp.

    * * *

    Another female ex-LTTE cadre came out with shocking facts on the experience of those who are taken to the Palaali base.

    After being ‘summoned’ to the local camp and taken to regional and the Achchezhu camps, some are chosen to ‘meet’ the top officials at Palaali, the ex-cadre said.

    When asked how it becomes possible to take them around without being seen by people, the ex-cadre said that they are taken in white vans or mini buses, sitting along with soldiers in civil dress, so that it would look as though they are passenger vehicles.

    They have a large fleet of those white vans and such vehicles ply to and fro the base without any hindrances, she said.

    Narrating her experience of meeting higher officers at Palaali, another ex-cadre said that after tiring her by interrogation for three hours, she was given with cool drink. The drink fainted her and she awoke to find that she had been sexually assaulted.

    “I couldn’t do anything. I came alive out of that interrogation, crying,” she said.

    “We could go absconding or go out of the country. In those cases they get hold of our family members. It could be my father, mother, brother or sister,” she further said.

    To escape from sexual harassment another ex-cadre from Ki’linochchi used to hide in the houses of friends and relatives. On those occasions her father was assaulted by the SL military and was even hospitalized. Her brothers were threatened that they would be killed.

    For the sake of the family, the ex-cadres accept the ‘summons’ and go back to the SL military camps. On returning to ‘interrogations’ we face sexual assault with more vengeance and sadism, the ex-cadre from Ki’linochchi told TamilNet.

    * * *

    A senior doctor in the Jaffna teaching hospital admitted treating a number of ex-cadres who had attempted committing suicide after ‘interrogation’ sexual assaults.

    Some had been admitted to the hospital after swallowing blade pieces in the camps in their attempts to commit suicide. Some had attempted suicide by immolating themselves after returning from the SL military camps, the doctor said.

    Poverty is attributed to the suicide of some of those who hanged themselves. But there could be other reasons, the doctor further said.

    Vanni is the worst hit region. In Jaffna and in the other towns there are social activists for the consolation of the victims. But no one could raise a finger for what is happening in Vanni.

    The SL military camps mushroomed at very short distances in Vanni aim for the exploitation of the ex-cadres. Going out from the region is the only escape to a former female cadre. The parents would tell the SL military that their daughter has eloped with someone.

    The claim of ‘rehabilitation’ is a farce and the facility in Vavuniyaa is only a showcase, comments an ex-cadre from Vanni.

    The fate of thousands of female cadres who were captured at the end of the war is not accounted yet; claim those who have managed to escape disappearance in the camps after the war.

    Many of us are psychological wrecks after release from the internment camps of the SL military. Many do not go out, meet people or even speak to their family members. Many live only for the sake of their children, says another female cadre.

    Her husband became mentally retarded by the war. Two of her kids were killed in the war. She lives for the sake of three more children remaining.

    Some of them want at least to send their children out. But they have no means.

    Meanwhile, in the cases of some, people who have personal animosities with them or with their families send malicious information, providing opportunities for the occupying military to harass them.

    * * *

    Subhodini Sivalingam32-year old, Ms. Subhodini Sivalingam, who recently committed suicide at Polika’ndi in Jaffna, had sacrificed 15 years of her life to the freedom struggle.

    She was partly paralysed after getting injured in a combat operation in 1999 and was serving in the medical service of the LTTE during the Vanni war.

    Her suicide has been attributed to poverty. But informed circles come out with different facts. She had been continuously harassed, interrogated, sexually abused and threatened for her life by the occupying SL military.

    Subhodini, who was also called Paadini, immolated herself in a closed room in the house she was living in at Polika’ndi in Vadamaraadchi, Jaffna.

    Many ex female freedom fighters want to forget the sexual abuses of the genocidal military in the internment camps as a bad dream.

    “But the occupying military has now made it a routine to harass us perpetually. How could we forget anything now,” asks a female cadre.

    “I feel like fighting again. If I get a gun I would kill a particular lot before losing my life,” swore another woman fighter who survived a suicide attempt after sexual assaults and harassments in the SL military camps.

      It is easy to be asking solutions but when asking for solutions that relate to human beings it is something that can be hurried. The international propaganda of the LTTE has left out crucial components that reveal exactly how divided Tamils in reality are. Not many have cared to question why LTTE did not use its USD300 annual earnings to uplift the areas it aspired to control over its own people.

      Absolutely nothing had been done except to build sophisticated bunkers and homes for the LTTE and their families. Even the food and medicines were sent by Sri Lanka’s Government to the North throughout the LTTE’s rule. The world needs to know that there is a major difference in what the Tamils (who controlled the Tamils during the heyday of the LTTE) aspire and what the Tamils need (the Tamils who suffered at the hands of the LTTE/Tamil politicians and the Tamil Diaspora).

      The few incidents given below were given hardly any space in the Tamil/English mainstream media though they would have been jumping up and down if a non-Tamil had been involved and the World Wide Web would have been inundated with such clippings. We question the reason for the silence.

      1 July2012 – a 7 year old Tamil girl from Kirulapone had been raped by her Tamil uncle and2 males and dumped into a drainage canal. http://adaderana.lk/news.php?nid=18653
      It has emerged that she had been sexually abused for over a month by the accused.

      26 July2012– Lover informs that 31 year old Tamil businesswoman was hanging from a fan in a Vavuniya hotel. The lover a Tamil domestic who had been working for her parents too has a series of robbery cases against him. Her parents had married her to wealthy businessmen 15 years her senior and both had a daughter though later she had discovered he was a father of 3 from a previous marriage. After their separation, she had reunited with the former domestic

      29 February 2012 – a 48 year old Tamil woman found dead with stab wounds inside a hotel room in Kollupitiya. She had been visiting Sri Lanka from UK.

      May2012 – Kayts Police arrested a Tamil man for tying a stone round his 80year mother of two and pushing her into the well because she was an inconvenience to him. The suspect was a member of the LTTE armed units.

      19 August 2012 – Tamil kills 58year old father, mother and 23 year old sister in an apartment complex in Wellawatte. The son is suspected to have fled the island.

      Furthermore, while the Sri Lankan security forces are going to great lengths to disarm all armed groups that had taken arms for their protection against the LTTE, several tiffs between these Tamil groups have resulted in deaths/injuries.

      The incidents of Tamil gang violence in all the countries that Tamils have been given refugee are certainly alarming as well. It is no exaggeration to say that in some towns traditionally ruled by the “Blacks” it is the Tamil gangs who are now involved in mugging, looting, shoplifting, credit card scams and other such nefarious activities.

      With a million Tamils now living in foreign shores it is not difficult to fathom how financially their lives have changed Anyone doing marketing in Wellawatte will agree that it is the most expensive place to shop and there is no bargaining not even for vegetables and vendors have even stated gleefully that some shoppers do not even wait to take their change! Translated this simply means that practically all the Tamil families in Colombo and suburbs have at least one member of their family now living overseas and what many of them cannot forget is that it is the LTTE that they have to be thankful for.

      Here is the catch. While Tamils whatever caste or class they belong to feel happy that Sri Lanka’s conflict is now over there is an inherent gratitude that they cannot shrug off towards the LTTE for their financial and social status quo though it does not necessarily mean that they are for a separate state. We need to comprehend this dilemma.

      Confusing the situation is the fact that the LTTE was a terrorist organization generating profits of USD300annually and its international co-activities meant that a large number of Tamils had become rich and acknowledged internationally in view of being LTTE’s foreign representatives. These people do not wish to give up 30 years of perks and privileges they had been enjoying. This is the reason why they wish to keep flagging the Sinhala-Tamil discrimination theme and using their illicit money to create stories, buy foreign politicians and make up some bizarre senate with former senile war criminal lawyers.

      From overseas these Tamils most of whom have not set foot in Sri Lanka or sent a penny to uplift the lives of ordinary Tamil people cry to remove Sri Lanka’s military presence in the North while the Karaveddy Tamils are requesting the Jaffna Commander to continue the military as the Tamil people feel far safer. This same sentiment was expressed by Dr. Subramaniam Swamy when he was visiting Sri Lanka as a Guest Speaker. So are we to believe people who have not come to Sri Lanka or the Tamil people themselves who are living amongst the Sri Lanka military? If one goes deeper into the Northern terrain in places like Mullaitivu the popularity of the Sri Lankan army would make any international anti-Sri Lanka speak squirm with envy!

      Unknown to most especially those that seek to champion the cause of the Tamil people, is the reality that Tamils are far more divided than they promote themselves to be. The divisions are many – there is the caste where a handful of the Vellalas continue to want to dominate over the entire Tamil population. You will find them among the ruling Tamil politicians and their election victories can be compared to the Gandhis continuing to win votes. Some say that even if Gandhi’s dog stood for election, he too would win resoundingly!

      Why is it that only we question the silence of the TNA politicians throughout the LTTE reign where not a single dared to walk into the North, not a single even appealed to the LTTE not to kidnap the Tamil children to make them into child combatants. Why were the TNA politicians silent – because the children who were kidnapped were not Colombo Tamils or high caste Tamils but poor low caste children? The same is true of the 297,000Tamil civilians who were rescued by the Sri Lankan army. The caste differences such that you will not find any high caste sharing the same cup with someone belonging to the low caste and you can be sure that there will be separate cutlery and crockery to be offered. Alarming too is the fact that the blood to Jaffna hospital is supplied by the Sri Lankan army because Tamils do not want to donates blood due to their caste differences! How many would even care to acknowledge this fact?

      Nevertheless, 30 years is a long time and the Tamils that have gone to make a home overseas are now ready to compete with their own having the power of money to gain the position they were denied because of their caste. It is easy to pick the expatriates that arrive now to Sri Lanka. The male youth wear earrings, the young girls are in micro mini’s, the once shy Tamil women are not shy to wear shorts and all speak in incomprehensible English with equally incomprehensible accents!

      Whitmore the extent of the freedom Tamils now enjoy thanks to the Sri Lankan forces is something they are unable to control. The police statistics will reveal the rise in rapes among Tamil families with fathers raping their own daughters, there are also cases of unwanted pregnancies and Tamil girls once preferring to wait till their parents matched their horoscopes now not shy to start affairs.

      What is not difficult to conceive is that the new generation of youth is first of all unlikely to follow the traditional thinking patterns of their older generations while the older generations who are comfortable with the existence of the divisions that helped them dominate their own are doing whatever they can to maintain that status quo. Obviously there is a major mismatch.

      Bridging these divides is nothing a war victory can achieve. Acknowledging the divides that exist among Tamils is more important. Our dilemma is all about whose Tamil aspirations are being denied and a Sri Lankan Government cannot be drawing up reconciliation programs simply to please a handful of high caste/class Tamils knowing that the majority of the other Tamils would end up suffering by their own people. In this modern day and age this is not how things should work.

      The international community needs to comprehend the fact that there is a major disparity in what some Tamils want and what most Tamils need. By demanding solutions from the Sri Lankan Government without knowing the ground realities they are not helping the Tamils who had been excluded by the Tamils for 30 years – unless this is the game plan!

    These so called rights groups do not talk about the injustice done to innocent females who went to india for religious reasons. They are a group of politically biased anti sri lankan and should not be taken seriously for anything.
