Since the change of government this year, Aluthgamage has been under the microscope to ascertain how he amassed wealth running into millions of rupees over a period of just several years specially under the presidency of Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Aluthgamage’s staggering wealth came into light when his wife sought Rs. 500 million settlement during their divorce. However despite a complaint lodged at the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption back then there was no investigation to verify how the former sports minister amassed such wealth. This came to light when Aluthgamage filed for divorce at the Kaduwela District Court in 2014 during which the wife requested a settlement of Rs. 500 million and a monthly maintenance of Rs. 5 million.

Aluthgamage is today the owner of several plots of lands in Colombo and Kandy as well as other luxury properties. He is reported to have purchased a 20 perch land in Borella, another property in the highly residential area of Koswatta, Nawala and also owns at least two plots of land in Kandy. He also owns luxury apartment at Trillium Residencies and another property at Kynsey Road, Colombo 7. Aluthgamage had initially purchased these lands under the names of his family members including his ex-wife.

During their divorce battle it came to light that Aluthgamage’s first job was as an insurance agent with a monthly salary of just Rs. 1250, while his wife was a member of the sales staff at the Kollupitiya Singer outlet. However, apart from the land and property, Aluthgamage also reportedly owned 3 shops at the duty free complex at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

In 2014, Aluthgamage was reported to be dating the daughter of former Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Senani. She was also the ex-wife of Duminda Dissanayake, the current SLFP general secretary and confidante of President Maithripala Sirisena.
